  1. If I am to take a guess, then it's because of the amount of people in the target demographic. If it's a nukige, it targets anybody who likes the screenshots/characters and that's it (assume they are fine with nukige). If it's a story driven VN, you both have to like the characters, the settings and the story. Each step filters out some people. Also some people just want instant gratification, don't want to read and just want H scenes to pop up. Take for instance Maitetsu. In addition to the love reading requirement, the target audience would have to not dislike loli characters and at the same time not be bored with talk about trains. This will naturally make a smaller target demographic than a nukige. I suspect that (at least generally speaking), the more strict the target audience filters are, the more the readers will enjoy them if they match the filters. This could explain "why didn't title X sell better? It's awesome" kind of statements we see once in a while.
  2. So your patch is your safety valve, which you use to blow off steam. We knew that. I already pointed out a visualization of the patch way back on page 3
  3. The problem with copy paste is that people tend to forget the one character/number you need to update It's not mentioned, so I guess not. It's likely such a big task that doing so will affect the one scene a day routine.
  4. I second this. I started thinking of an automated file distribution system and dropped it because while I know how to set it up and use it, teaching other people to do so would take ages. If I get xdelta3 GUI correctly, you should be able to make a setup where it keeps the settings, meaning you just start it and click go. If you write the compressed file to a dropbox folder, it will automatically upload. While it's not the best possible solution, it's the best I can think of in terms of automation without spending a lot of time learning how to use advanced tools. Alternatively somebody might be able to write a bat file for you to just doubleclick and then it compresses and writes to the dropbox folder.
  5. You are basically arguing for VNs fully voiced in English. It doesn't sound like that will happen until English languaged VNs have a completely different kind of sales. Sounds a bit like the chicken and the egg kind of problem.
  6. I was thinking a bit about the number of patches. While the goal should be one final patch, using just one results in a different problem right now. You release a new patch daily, which is fine. The problem is that in order to get that one new scene, we have to download everything you have done so far and the compressed file is already approaching 200 MB. Add to that we have to unzip and the daily update routine will take longer and longer. To get around this, wouldn't it be better to use one patch for each route or something like that? It shouldn't change the fact that the end goal is a single patch, but for the time being uploading and downloading everything daily is a waste of time for everybody.
  7. You are absolutely right. We can't make story heavy VNs popular, but we can get somebody else to do it for us. That's our only hope.
  8. Bandaid is just a different kind of mosaic. Just add badaid removal to your current patch. It's not like anybody will go "remove the mosaic, but keep the bandaid". We should be careful not to set a standard of bloating the number of patches. It does however make sense to keep the demosaic and restoration patches as two patches, partly because the goals differs (genital visuals vs bugfix), partly practical reasons because they are made by different people. It's much easier to release an updated patch if you don't have to coordinate with anybody else. And yes it would be nice to remove the bandaid. Granted it's not as lewd as whatever gets the demosaic treatment, but it's still an eyesore. We all know that's not how people take baths and it's added purely to annoy us. Considering the angle, the view without a bandaid will most likely end up being more cute than lewd, which is fine.
  9. It's a 100% correct answer, yet 100% useless if you have to ask in the first place I think it's the list of VNs you have installed on your computer, which VNR is aware of and can start with VNR attached. I'm not completely sure though because I haven't used VNR in ages and never used it much.
  10. That's a number of good arguments. It seems like it comes down to a definition issue of "more popular". I was thinking changed number of sales while you point out effects, which would require a complete gamechanger. Apparently for once I did not think big enough. Sadly that's not true. If they profit to allow spending $20k more on development, they still won't do it unless they expect to earn more than $20k extra on the improvement itself. If they sell a million copies as base and a million and 5 due to increased quality, they end up paying $4k for each extra sale, which is a loss. Now if half of the customers would refuse to buy unless they spend the extra $20k, then it would be like you just stated. However sadly that's not how it works in real life. Just look at steam releases. Why should a publisher pay twice as much to get a better quality translation considering the high amount of people who gives thumbs up regardless of translation quality? Extra spent on the translation will not be reflected in the overall steam review score. You are right that more money allows higher quality, but it's not correct to say more money ensures higher quality. For that to be true, we would have to make customers way more picky about what they pay for.
  11. 4 pages and I still don't know why we would want VNs to become more popular. More releases is not really a goal because I can't keep up with the releases as it is right now. I would like better quality, but there is no link between quality and popularity. Even if sales are a million times as high as right now, certain companies would still release translations of questionable quality if that is what their staff can deliver or they assume is the most profitable approach or whatever. Before figuring out how we can make VNs more popular, can somebody explain why the end users would want more popularity?
  12. Ryleona's action towards the bridge quest reward was stupid. I looked at it, laughed, and forgot about it.
  13. I would like to thank you. Not only are you developing what seems to be a great tool, you also release the source code, which shows your goal is to make a good tool for the community rather than focus solely on "I did it personally" by locking out other people from development. Furthermore your response to discovering new users is not only to sign up to say hi, you also want to get the PSB files. The only explanation for this would be to allow you to do what you can to provide full support for the files in question or even better: understand the PSB format itself better to get better support for any VN using Emote. You also posted clarifications about statements related to FreeMote. We need more people like you. The foundation of any community creation is the tools and without people like you to make proper tools, fan made patches wouldn't be possible. Sadly generally speaking the community as a whole tend to thank whoever uploads a patch they can use and ignore whoever made the tools to make it possible to make the patch. We really should recognize and respect tool makers better and I want this post to be the start of this change.
  14. I read on and the technical descriptions doesn't get better. In fact they get worse. Inconsistent naming and unclear descriptions allows reading a the last common route scene like 8620 is burning water. It doesn't explicitly say so but if you map all the times certain parts are mentioned and what they do, then you can summarize water in the flames. More or less each scene has issues like this. After seeing that you can make patches, which applies to patches, I started wondering about making a patch purely to make the explanations readable. Not a retranslation, but rather "it's explaining this, let's explain this in a readable way while ignoring the voice most people can't understand anyway". Diverting from the original is not the goal of a translation, but this patch would not as much be a translation fix, but rather an explanation fix to help the immersion. It really breaks the immersion when each explanation ends up being confusing. Well not all, but quite a number of them. However after reaching Hachiroku's route, I have decided not to do it. The reason is that it has become obvious that a number of the issues aren't due to the translation. It seems that the translation just copied bogus explanations (which is what a translation should do, like it or not). Even worse, fixing means removing plot elements. My plan was to fix explanations while maintaining the plot. Since this has turned out not to be possible, I see no point in trying, what I already know will fail. Some plot related issues, all Hachiroku scene 3: I was already questioning even looking into it because it seems to be time consuming and it's not like I haven't got anything else to do (like you know, already working on a different VN). Now that I know the end goal is unreachable, I'm even less motivated to even start.
  15. That would be a trivial change if the script is accessible as well as it is for whoever wrote it in the first place. If it's a compiled script with no or poor decompiler, then it could be difficult. That's a general reply for VNs in general. To answer for this VN specifically you have to know the specific engine in details. However it brings up another important question: would it be correct to do so? The patch has the goal of fixing bugs. What you are asking is altering the flow of the story, which is something entirely different. I think it's a bad choice to include something other than fixes in a bugfix patch.
  16. All of them. If one dies, then you can add more, meaning even if you only have command points for say 4, you can use a total of say 9 on a single map. Because of this, you really should prevent having a bunch of level 20 characters and then suddenly require using a level 5 character. Also even without replacing characters on a map, certain characters are better than others for certain maps, like natural elemental damage or resistance to match the monsters on the map. Also natural flying, swimming etc can also be either useless of downright mandatory depending on the map. Having said that, you will likely end up with say Yuela being used more due to generally being a more efficient fighter, meaning she will be a higher level than the rest, making her even better. Don't fall into the trap of using the highest level characters each time even if it can be tempting. You will need to have many at some point. Another reason for leveling up everybody: (it is a spoiler, but I can't remember when it triggers)
  17. Looking at page 2, it says Paulette isn't a loli and likely not Hibiki either, but the rest are. If you have another source to contradict this, then do tell
  18. Steam ($15) + DLC ($15) gives you the same as the FAKKU full version ($30). I don't see any issues there. The problem is that the decensor patch only works on the full FAKKU version, though it's most likely just a matter of time before somebody figures out how to pack for the steam version as well.
  19. During your first playthrough, you should try to craft all outfits if possible, but you shouldn't upgrade them. The exception is if you see you can add two blocks and then you gain a skill you can really use. Heavy upgrading is a trap. It starts out at 500, which seems like nothing. However it slowly increase in cost and suddenly you spent a fortune. Also be aware that you plan to try to always select something next to the last block you selected because there is a fee for jumping over blocks you already selected and that one really adds up fast. One reason to not do much for upgrading is it doesn't matter much unless you upgrade a lot. If you upgrade a lot, you have to select one to focus on. Having the ability to switch is very beneficial because in addition to skills, outfits have bonuses and penalties in defense against specific types of attack, like you switch for max fire resistance before going into a map with fire breathing monsters. You really should craft weapons. In fact you should pay special attention to the type of damage. For instance there is a sword with 1 attack, which is almost pointless. However it's providing fire damage, which makes it really useful if you fight something, which is weak against fire, like giving you +50% attack and that's not +50% to the sword, that's +50% of your total attack, meaning you will cause massive damage. You really want to pay attention to which types of damage you should use against which monsters. Unlike outfits, you can switch weapons while on the map, meaning it's easier to optimize against against whatever you encounter even if you don't know what the map contains in advance. You can also switch between two weapons multiple times to optimize against two different monsters on the same map. There is a lot of strategy regarding elemental damage. The stats for crafting and which furniture to place in your workshop.
  20. No need to apologize. The problem with thread revival is when it's for no good reason, like saying "I agree" and nothing else. What you wrote is likely the most touching post I have ever read on Fuwa. It takes guts to look death in the eyes and declare "I won't be ruled by fear". I'm thinking about some other things to say, but somehow it all ends up being insignificant compared to what you just wrote.
  21. People with that kind of view prefer to watch TV with real people. You know shows where you lock 10 people in a house and with nothing to do, the highlights in the house are drinking, sex and showers. You know entertainment for mature minds, not that drawn immature stuff where people go nuts over topless drawn girls.
  22. That's debatable. Intel has a track record of better reliability, like it's AMD, which have had issues with cracks killing CPUs, CPUs bursting into flames if the cooler is removed etc. Intel has a history of reliability in that regard. AMD tend to deliver more CPU power at the same pricetag, but they do so by pushing the hardware more. I have a few 10+ year old Intel CPUs running just fine and I will not expect Ryzen to survive that long. Another way to tell the difference between Intel and AMD is you can overclock Intel CPUs quite significantly without issues (personally 4->4.7 GHz) while Ryzen can't really be overclocked. It's already clocked at the limit and if you clock it higher, it has a risk of overheating because it can't move the heat from the CPU to the heatsink fast enough. It's not a question of how good a heatsink you have, it's a question of how fast the heat can leave the CPU itself. Ryzen has a tendency to use a lot of power and produce a lot of heat. I wouldn't say "always go with... (Intel or AMD)" because question of finding the right CPU for the task is more complex than just looking up benchmarks and price. Ryzen does have some attractive features, particularly considering the price, but it doesn't beat Intel in all aspects.
  23. While it isn't great, I won't hold this against JAST. They responded within reasonable time with a reasonable explanation and instantly gives the offer of a refund because they screwed up informing about what they had to do. They even encourage a fan made patch fix. I can't see what else we should expect a company to do, particularly if they communication error is a one time event and not a sign of future release handling. While this is all entirely correct, it doesn't change the conclusion that we had a lot of unknowns at the time of writing and we should wait and see what JAST would announce before making conclusions about JAST and their goals.
  24. While multiple slots for fans isn't uncommon, you can't take them for granted and it really makes a difference if it's 2 80 mm fans or 3 120 mm fans. Obviously you should pay attention to other features as well, like does it have room for graphics card etc. Oh dear. I was hoping you wouldn't notice Some games depend on the GPU, some have heavy interaction between the CPU and GPU, which mean either can be a bottleneck and some rely on the CPU. There are plenty of turn based games, which looks fine, can make do with the integrated GPU, but can max out even the best CPU when the AI takes its turn. Games also depend differently on RAM, both throughput and latency. This is why "the best" gaming computer at a specific price doesn't exist. It will always be "the best for which game?". Which monitor is best? That can't be answered for similar reasons. Which monitor is best for VNs? That would be good colors, brightness, contrast etc while pixel update time won't matter. Resolution should be 4K. Why 4K? It's because it scales well to both 720p and 1080p. Native resolution divided by used resolution should be a whole number. The alternative is an image where some pixels are bigger than others because the screen cant display half pixels. 2160/1080=2 2160=720=3 1440/720=2 1440/1080=1.33 1080/720=1.5 Notice how 2160p (aka 4K) is the only resolution to properly support both 1080p and 720p. I'm not saying other resolutions are bad, but this is about the best option. You can get decently priced 4K monitors to match everything mentioned here, but be prepared for pixel response times upwards toward 10 ms, or around 4-5 times slower than monitors aimed at fast action like FPS. I wouldn't recommend a fast updating monitor for VNs though as they tend to sacrifice colors for speed, making VNs look noteworthy worse. Once again "the best" depends on what you plan to use it for.
