  1. You are basically arguing that Steam is the defacto platform for selling games, giving them a monopoly. If this is the case, they could be hit with an antitrust lawsuit for abusing their monopoly to prevent publishers from getting a fair chance to reach customers. The inconsistency just makes it worse because it gives the impression that they will indeed keep certain title/people out for no objective reasons. The problem is I find it very unrealistic that they will be met with an antitrust. It doesn't come trough as a high profile "we stand with the people" kind of case. I can find a lot of other reasons, which are more likely to cause an antitrust case against Valve, like you don't own the games you buy. You rent them for a one time fee. This allows them to force changes to you against your will, like 64 bit only updates on 32 bit computers or windows 10 only updates on earlier versions of windows. They kill XP support in half a year or so, yet they have games, which are too old to run on win7. Still no refund. It's also horrible at breaking savegames and mods, not to mention horrible for mod creators. The only good thing about it is the fact that everybody is on it. It sucks in all other aspects. They can also disable accounts, making people lose access to all their rented stuff. There is also the issue of updates breaking savegames/mods, which you can't prevent from being installed. More or less all competitors have better technical solutions and more user friendly. The only reason to use Steam is because they are the biggest. Sure sounds like a monopoly to me. The worst part: we can't do anything about it. Antitrust laws are designed to prevent this from happening, but even perfect laws are worthless if they aren't enforced. Yes and no. Yes in the sense that Valve is a private company and can sell what they want. No because Valve controls the customers. I wouldn't be surprised if VNs on Steam VNs sells 20+ times more than non-Steam VNs even with the same contents. In other words for a publisher, it's entirely possible that getting on Steam is a question of profit or bankruptcy. Moving a VN from Steam to say FAKKU will leave the customers on Steam, which will then buy a non-VN instead. The vast majority will not seek out FAKKU. This is the core issue: Steam is hording most of the customers.
  2. That's the kind of gray area I referred to. If you can enjoy something like that, then you build up a tolerance towards rape and even if you don't actually do it yourself, you start to be more indifferent towards it. Unlike rape bad end or whatever, Rapelay sets it as a goal and it becomes a good thing. If you are constantly told something like that, it can stick to even normal people. Look at Germany in the 30s. A group of people were pointed out as bad people and it made other people able to do normally unthinkable things to those bad people because the concept of normal got warped, but I'm sure an ally of Germany (like you) won't admit it lol.
  3. Rapelay is mentioned frequently as a nightmare scenario, but I wonder how many people actually know it other than "the worst case scenario". It starts out in an intro with the protagonist groping a girl. She reports it to the police, protag is fined/jailed/whatever and afterwards he seeks out the girl, her sister and mother to get revenge rape. That's it for the story and it's told in 100 lines or something. After that it's a sex simulator, something like select girl and place and then you control how to rape her in some 3D realtime rendered stuff. The girls are kept as sex slaves through threats and blackmail. The goal is something like crushing the spirit/mind of the girls to make them allow everything without fighting back. It's very dark without any hint of comedy or other positive feelings. Despite having an attitude, which more or less says everything goes, I actually support a ban on Rapelay. It's not like it's a story, general gameplay or anything. It's nothing but repeated raping. From time to time people claim video games causes violence, shootings, dangerous driving or whatever, usually without any hint of evidence or explanation why other than "it's present". Rapelay seems different. It aims to be realistic and it has a point system, which pushes the player to go further and further. If your mind is in a gray zone regarding rape, Rapelay could very well be what pushes you over the edge. If your mind isn't in the gray zone regarding rapes, then you will not play it (unless you want to see what the fuss is all about and then quickly regret doing so). It might be possible to find screenshots, which makes Rapelay look like a VN, but it's clearly not. 99%+ of the time is about interactive 3D rape. Whenever anybody compares a VN to Rapelay, I feel like he/she is missing the issue with Rapelay. Explain Rapelay in one sentence "you rape 3 girls as many times as possible". Explain Maitetsu in one sentence "You are on a quest to help a girl locate a steam locomotive". If somebody makes a fuss about it, people can look it up on steam, read a description of the contents and it sounds ok. It doesn't scream sick contents like Rapelay does. Still it's possible that VNs like Maitetsu will cause an outcry. It's possible with any release, even all age. The truth have never stopped a public outcry. Fight something, which wasn't there to being with and when investigation reveals it's not present, declare victory by claiming credit for the removal. A lot of the public rage is not about the goal, but rather some leader(s) having power to make other people upset. If they can control a group of people by lying, then lying it is to gain such a power. I'm not more concerned about a public outcry regarding Maitetsu than I am for so many other VN titles. Such things strike semi randomly.
  4. What you wrote is a little more detailed than that. Besides what isn't a spoiler to one person could easily be considered a spoiler by another person. It's better to be safe than sorry because once somebody feels spoiled, you can't really undo it even if you edit.
  5. Quoting out of context makes it easier to make good joke replies. Besides while they aren't state of the art in visual technology, I expected much worse when people referred to those titles as looking old. They are perfectly fine by my standards for story driven VNs. Vanilla nukige not so much, but then again that's not a genre I'm particularly interested in in the first place.

  7. Confession: I once had problems falling asleep and went to my doctor. He gave me some sleeping pills, which were intended to make me fall asleep on command, hence teaching my body to fall asleep at a specific time even after not taking the pills anymore. I took the first one and then the room started to spin and I got attacked by a serious case of nausea. This feeling of close to vomiting kept me awake until the pill wore off and I could sleep... around sunrise. That's the only time I ever took a sleeping pill. Nice video btw. What it says actually gets the job done and helps sleeping, but I already knew all the tips from other sources.
  8. I had a laptop once where the monitor cable had a tendency to lose a pin connection in the wire itself (design flaw due to mechanical stress at a certain location). Each time it happened I bought a new one for around 5% of the value of the laptop itself and replaced it myself. Even though I had to do it 3 times, but the cost of having a computer per year was still cheaper than if I had bought a new computer. Eventually I replaced it because some software required a newer CPU, not because of the monitor cable. Your problem doesn't look like it's a cable issue. Instead something is going on inside the screen itself and it likely isn't possible to do anything about it expect replacing the entire screen unit, a much more expensive part. Since it's not the first time it has happened, odds are that a replaced screen will eventually suffer the same fate. I'm sorry to say this, but it looks like the best option for you is to get a new computer. It looks a bit like some screens I saw quite a number of years ago, which required to be replaced. They had various stories for impact, meaning applied pressure beyond what they were designed for. Maybe the problem is the touchscreen and the force you apply when you use it. The modern computers have to be so thin that the mechanical strength isn't what it used to be and a touchscreen just makes that part of the problem worse. Do anybody know if there are statistics, which reveals touchscreens to have a shorter lifespan than non-touchscreens? Alternatively go seek help on a forum dedicated to computers, preferably laptops and/or monitors. I'm sure there are people there with more knowledge about monitor issues than all users on Fuwa combined. I don't think this post would have been made if the monitor is under warranty and can be replaced for free. Maybe patience isn't the answer in this case. What if the monitor dies completely? I would recommend figuring out a plan for that event, perhaps setting it up to use the TV as a mirrored monitor or whatever. Just anything to allow access to all the files in case the monitor dies completely. Also as always make sure you back up everything.
  9. Make a list of broken lines, like a new spreadsheet where the lines in question are copy pasted. Don't do anything to them for the time being and just move on. Make sure the context is preserved, like link to the full file or something like that. Carry on like that until all the broken lines are collected in one location. This will make it easier and faster for a translator to translate those lines. I will consider this a bare minimum if there should ever be a chance that an experience translator takes up this task. They need to not waste time searching for what to translate and they want the full list to get an idea of time required for completing an entire script before starting. Remember experienced translators are rarely available, meaning you will have to convince somebody to take a break from another translation project. It might be possible if it can be done in a day or two, but not if it requires a few months and certainly not if time for completion is unpredictable as in no overview of what to do to complete the task. Even if you do everything right, nobody can promise you that you will be sure to get an experienced translator. It's about avoiding a setup where you are almost certain not to get one. It will however require doing all the work without knowing if a translator will appear. It won't prevent you from having a plan B where an inexperienced translator translates the lines as soon as a new one is added to the list, though it would require somebody to spend quite a while translating something, which ideally will be discarded. There is no perfect solution.
  10. You didn't in the first post, hence the replies. However you have specified it now and we should put that part of the debate to rest. I wrote something similar not long ago in a different thread, though I worded it differently. What I said was that I hate when it feels like the writer has a line quota to fulfill, missed it and then just add more lines without adding more contents. A well written VN (or text in general) is when you can't remove anything without removing contents. This issue is completely different from the issue of preferring short or long VNs. I prefer long VNs, but only if the storyline has enough contents to justify making the VN itself long. Rather than recommending a VN based on length alone (like number of lines in the script), it would make sense to comment on if the length is reasonable for the contents or if it has a tendency to stretching everything to fill as many lines as possible.
  11. I don't find it odd that a string (line) can be split by accident by a newline. Such issues are quite common and I lost count of how many times I encountered something like that personally. The inconsistency could be due to working with LF, but not CRLF newlines or something else of that nature. However the part I don't get is that it's fairly easy to detect, meaning how did they end up releasing a VN where such an issue goes undetected? It's not like the graphics issue where a proofreader might not know there are two versions. It should be fairly obvious when half a line is missing. Another really important question: does it mean all broken lines have to be retranslated to recreate the missing part? That could take a while. I wonder if it's possible that the cutoff part is in the script file, but not readable by the game or extractor, hence skipped, like the broken newline is read as end of line and then the rest of the string is ignored. The next string then starts later, meaning the script would contain inaccessible bytes. Some VN script formats would allow this scenario.
  12. Right. I read it as a continuation of "drop the porn" and it wouldn't be farfetched to think certain users would want a loli ban if they could get away with it (you know who you are). I didn't link the word "promote" to Fuwa recommendations, partly because I'm not really using it regular basis. I would be careful regarding linking on VN contents to real life cases. If GTA allows shooting random people, steal cars etc and still be promoted, then why should VNs be singled out as the devil's work? Both would be really bad if somebody decides to do it in real life. I'm deeply sorry for victims of such crimes, but if we start to take traumas of other people into account, we end up without the ability to add contents again. Take for instance cars. Should we accept not having cars in VNs because it would be an issue for somebody who had a near fatal car crash? Not promoting VNs according to some list of contents is partly the same as a ban. If we ban all reviews of VNs with loli contents, then publishers could start to avoid loli titles because of the impact from people who won't buy without having read a review first. I too have some type of content I wish didn't exist, but if I want it hidden or banned, then we will return to the book burning argument. Who is to judge what is ok and what isn't? You can't say something like common sense because we will never get everybody to agree. I didn't compare it as such. My point is that if we accept one group requesting a ban, in this case loli contents, then we end up accepting some other group, which requests banning BL and so on. The only connection is that there are people who want such content banned from all media.

However if VNs are marketed like that, I fear people will view it as precisely what you wrote "People with disabilities who can't/don't want to play "normal" video games" as in "we know it's worse than the normal gaming experience, but at least it's better than nothing". Apart from that I like your proposals. I would add the ability to control the text, as in font, font size, font color etc. It would help colorblind people, but also the rest of us. Eyes aren't identical, meaning even within the normal spectrum (as in not handicapped), people prefer high contrast, low contrast, bigger font etc. It happens from time to time that people complain about an ugly font in a VN. Handicapped or not, control of the font would be a good thing. I completely disagree with this statement. If we start picking topics/genres, which are too offensive for some people to be allowed, then it will be a slippery slope. First it's loli, next it's BL and yuri, then it's H scenes in general, then pregnancies are offensive to LGBT, then.... you get the idea. People will always find something to complain about. VNs are great because everything goes. We all have some contents we don't agree with, but the solution is to just avoid it as a person. Wanting to ensure everybody avoids it is a direct violation of first and moves towards book burning. You could argue that X is bad and it's best to ban it, but each time any version of book burning has taken place in history it has made sense for whoever did it, at least at the time.
  14. Sounds right at first glance, but it's a slippery slope. Next the stories are too long, then it's lack of minigames. Eventually it will be something, which might be more popular, but will they still be VNs? Sounds like you want to take the path of sacrificing the existing VN readers in order to maybe gain new ones. I was thinking something like that, but more like adult stuff like an all age title and storyline like a pure nukige.
  15. I agree with this statement and it's something I have been wondering about every single time this topic is asked. Why would I personally want VNs to be popular? I still don't have an answer, meaning most likely I'm not really that interested in VN popularity. A worst case scenario is activists resulting in a ban. It's not like activists haven't got a history of resorting to lying to reach their goal. Take for instance the activists attacking Lego. They proclaimed how bad it is for animals with oil spills and their solution to the problem is to get rid of oil companies. The way to do that would be to attack companies with contracts with oil companies because if people stop buying oil, the problem is solved. They went into Legoland and poured oil on some Lego houses, which then went into water and ground etc, but remember it was for a good cause. Lego stated that they have the contract to get non-toxic plastic and the world market can't deliver the amount they need, which is why they have a long term contract with an oil company (remember plastic is made out of oil). The activists didn't care and had a victory when the contract was canceled. Delivering toxic toys to children. It must be a dream come true for activists. They really made a difference. Lego however made a new contract with a different oil company, but that was apparently ok for the activists. They were fighting to get the contract canceled and they won. So what if nothing changed regarding oil. I dare not to think about what people with a mindset like that would say about VNs. There are quite a lot of activists where facts and goals doesn't really matter. It's mainly about a crusade against some great evil and it doesn't matter if their claim is right or not. Remember when Go Go Nippon went on Steam Greenlight, one of the very first comments was "this must be one of those Japanese rape games" and then a bunch of comments followed about people flaming Steam for allowing something, which promotes rape. All age rape title... go figure. As I said: facts doesn't matter. Another reason why I'm not to keen on getting VNs too big in the west is that once a market becomes big, big companies moves in and change everything. It will end up as TV: bland, the end user should be entertained with mindless stuff and don't think and it has to be political correct. In other words VNs could very well end up being what I try to avoid by picking VNs. What would happen for me if VNs make it big? More titles? Perhaps, but to be completely honest my backlog of unread VNs grow as it is. I wouldn't benefit from more titles. Better titles? I just wrote releases would likely drop in quality, not increase. More popular might be good for publishers, but I'm not sure it's good for me personally. And let's not forget VNs aren't big in Japan. Bigger than in the west, but it's still a niche, which never was and likely never will be big.
  16. Not true. By the time VNs started having voices, Rance already had the style of containing way too many characters to make voices realistic, not to mention lines. By not being restricted by voice recording costs, the number of characters can explode. Like 50+ named females with spoken lines in H scenes kind of explode. (this kind of explain the number of lines as well. They have big scripts) Another issue: making a character from a previous title appear. If the same character appear in two VNs, ideally that character should be voiced by the same person. What do you do with characters appearing in 5+ Rance titles across 1-2 decades? What if it's 10+ titles? Combine this with the high number of characters in each title and you have a nightmare keeping all the voices you need for the next title. While it may sound odd by modern standards, Rance is actually better without voices because while voices themselves would be good, they would restrict development of something, which is actually better than voices. Normally voiced VNs have a set of heroines say 5 and then very few other people, if any. In the Rance world, you can go into a shop and there is a full featured female character tending the shop. Same for the next and the next etc. In other words the Rance world is way more of a full world than normally seen in VNs. Yeah, apparently it's fully voiced. I'm not really sure why because after releasing that voiced version Alicesoft went back to releasing unvoiced Rance titles. Maybe they tried to see if sales would increase and it didn't. Luckily it doesn't look like they decided to stick to restricting the full Rance world experience.
  17. It's stupid to have two patches in the work. However I can only see one because I never figured out how to navigate 4chan. It looks to me like a bunch of anon posts semi random stuff and you have to look through everything, making it hard to follow the work of one person/group. I don't get how that can be an environment where a usable patch can appear from.
  18. I can't really tell the difference. Both before and after MG licensed Rance, quite a number of people have liked the series while at the same time a significant number of people don't like it. Looks at who are upset about Rance. What they are actually saying is that they are upset about title X or genre Y wasn't announced. Such outbursts will then trashtalk whatever was announced, regardless of which titles they are because in the end the point is that it's not the correct one. I would be careful not to put too much into such outbursts. MG knows how well Rance sells and they have 4 announced, yet unreleased Rance titles. I think that's a strong hint that there is still a strong interest in Rance.
  19. Good question. It's fairly trivial to make such a screenshot if you are in control of the script itself. However made that screenshot is clearly in control of the text and apparently has some knowledge about Maitetsu patching history. The question is if the screenshot is self made or copied from somewhere like 4chan. The post doesn't specify this, though I have a hunch it's a copy from 4chan. It tells somebody to stop making up incorrect info and I can't really see it aimed at anybody specific in this thread, hence a reference to some 4chan event is the most likely explanation.
  20. The clear winner is the end user. So many announcements, a number of titles for different tastes etc. We did nothing and yet we gain access to this treasure chest.
  21. Mystery solved. VNDB added him to Rance X yesterday. I was right that he wasn't listed with an obvious candidate for the next release. Had he been listed, then we might have had a chance of predicting Rance X being announced. Once again it makes so much sense in retrospect, but not before you have seen the ending. Rance IV -Legacy of the Sect- Rance 4.1 -Save the Medicine Plant!- Rance 4.2 -Angel Army- Kichikuou Rance All those have fan translations though. Only the remakes of 01-02-03 lacks translations or announcements of translations. Short is an understatement. Rance 1 came on 4 floppies in 1989 and it's apparently 1.5 MB compressed. Most likely they used DD disks, giving it a total of 2.8 MB available. That is for everything: script, graphics, audio etc. For comparison a few posts back it's mentioned that Rance X use 8 MB for the script alone. Even though the remakes are claimed to have 10 times as much text as the originals, translating those would likely feel nearly instant compared to Rance X. If I am to take a guess to why Rance X is announced and not the early titles, the reason would be that they know Rance X will take ages (years) to translate. If they stop Rance releases while translating, the Rance hype might die out before they finish. Right now they announced it, they have 3 announced, yet not released, 3 remakes and 4 old titles without remakes, making it a total of 10 unreleased Rance titles. This allows them to release a Rance title every 10th of the Rance X translation time, which will make it seem like a steady stream of "new" titles and Rance will have a better chance of still being hype when Rance X is released. The fact that a number of those titles aren't marathon readings just makes it easier to do them in parallel with Rance X. Somebody mentioned something of a possible remake of Rance 4 (could be a fake rumor for all I know). If that is true and one will be released in Japan at some point in a not too distant future, it's entirely possible that Alicesoft and MG plan together and MG will release 01-02-03-04 within reasonable time of each other. If that's the case, it's possible that MG is translating the remakes now, but can't announce it until the 04 remake is released in Japan or something like that. We can speculate all we want. The only thing we can really do is to wait for MG to do their job and we will likely get every single Rance title. It's just a question of when and which order. I don't really get the "who won AX". I don't think that much about publishers. I think in terms of individual titles and for the most part, it's one title from each publisher (if any). I consider AX itself to be the winner. I remember being disappointed with Anime Boston since I'm not really interested in anything released there. I have a completely different feeling with AX. I can't say I saw major surprises though. More Rance announcements, but it was to be expected, particularly with a guest from Alicesoft. As I wrote on page one, we kind of knew the announcement from an old partner would be Alicesoft and most likely Rance. The question was which specific title. Majo Koi Nikki is another one to look forward to and while I was a bit surprised that Denpasoft announced it with them as publisher, it is a title we all knew as an upcoming release. In other words no big surprises regarding great titles coming out of nowhere, but at the same time it is likely the release event that I'm the most happy with out of all the events I have paid attention to while they were in progress.

I don't restrict your freedom or whatever you are talking about. Just like you can write your opinion on a written text, I can write my opinion on a written text, in this case your post. However it looks like while you can write whatever you want about everything, I'm not allowed to have an opinion about what you write, at least not if I'm not cheering for you. I'm not going to debate this because it will get us nowhere. I tried to talk about the post, but you went ahead, twisted my words and made it all about you as a person and how evil I am towards you.
  23. You gave it 2 / 10, which by most standards aims towards reviewing rather than "just my impression". No and I never claimed otherwise. What I object to is not that you speak your mind, but rather that you decided to give a score. Like it or not, people will read scores as reviews and reading what you wrote as a review makes it a bogus review, particularly since you did not even read the VN description first and rate lower due to false expectations. If nobody objects to that, then more will show up and Fuwa becomes less trustworthy. I guess what I'm saying is that you are free to write what you want as long as you do not (intentionally or not) gives the reader a false impression.
