finiteHP reacted to Plk_Lesiak in This toxic attitude regarding translations needs to end.
Huuuuuuuuh... I see many things that are absolutely wrong with your statement. First, really there's no translation quality/choice drama in other otaku niches? I've seen people going apeshit over minor details in anime translations and inconsistencies between the fan and official versions. On the one hand, there'll always be purists that are demanding top quality every time and on the other, there will be botched or poor-quality translation on both the fan and official side of things. The more choice and comparison people have, the more likely they are to criticize underperforming projects - when fan translators were your only hope for playing pretty much any VNs, you were less likely to complain about their work than now, when they compete with a fairly rich selection of professional releases. I things it's even somewhat legit to argue that nowadays there's little sense in translating a VN unless you can do it well.
The second, do you know about many EVNs being translated to Japanese? People actually caring about those? It's a non-topic, but I would be surprised if Japanese VN fans didn't have a problem with poor translations - they aren't used to awful localizations and don't treat them as "facts of life" like Western otakus were forced to by turd-quality products offered to them on a regular basis. Demanding quality seems like a pretty reasonable standard, especially for commercial products. And the VN fandom today is not reliant on fan translations anymore and people's attitudes towards those are not any kind of "crucial barrier" for its growth.
Also, there are many other reasons why fan translations are pretty much dying out - people that once done them professionalizing or moving on with their lives is the main one and there's no going back from this. What's left is the official publishers, and if you suggest we shouldn't take those up to highest scrutiny as their clients, that's pretty much saying you want them to screw you over with subpar services. Well, you're allowed to act against your own self-interest of course, but that doesn't look like a healthy narrative.

I don’t ever remember my dreams. If it wasn’t impossible to not do so, I’d say I don’t dream.

finiteHP reacted to KioW in Hello everyone
Hi everyone, I'm KioW and I'm French (sorry for my bad english, I'm still learning alone ) and I'm here because I want to know more about visual novels. I'm a totally beginner in visual novels so if you have any recommendations, please tell me . I don't have really friends with who to share my hobbies and talk because of my social phobia, so feel free to talk to me ! I want to improve my english and make friends
What I like: animes/mangas, japanese culture, dramas, light novels, asian literature (especially japanese and historical literature), music (EDM, electro swing, kawaii music, J-pop, chillout), video games...
I hope I can get along with everyone

finiteHP reacted to Raithfyre in Mangagamer to bring their visual novels to GOG
Hey, I work for Sekai Project. I just wanted to chime in and mention that aside from Sunrider and Fault, we'll be bringing more of our titles to the platform over time. While we probably won't be offering our full catalog on there, we're looking forward to working with them. We actually announced this partnership at AWA last September, so we're excited to finally start selling our games on this platform!

Hey, great news! I use GOG for games, so it'll be cool to see powerpoints in there too! Regional price never bothered me as I always wait for sales anyway.
And this was in the MG blog, maybe just to spice news up or a tease that 18+ games with patches will be there too in the future.
Wow, found the answer a minute later on GOG's twitter:

Thoughts?
With Steam's latest fiasco, which clearly undermines their credibility as a publishing platform for both large studios and indie devs, GOG might have found their potential chance to expand their market share.
In all honesty, this is great news, considering how reluctant so far they have been in regards to vns. I doubt we'll see 18+ games released anytime soon if ever, but if that happens and GOG actually bothers to create a well managed market with decent control over what content gets published, it might as well turn into a new dawn for both western and japanese developers. Not to mention GOG falls under polish jurisdiction, which means a lot more lenient and reasonable laws regarding what can and cannot be published in terms of potential 18+ content.

finiteHP reacted to sanahtlig in Valve threatening to remove VNs with adult content from steam?
Who cares if Valve actually listens? It's free publicity from someone with a huge audience. And publicity means more sales for any developer/publisher mentioned.

This might not be connected, but Steam is getting ready to release their streaming app thing on iOS and Android. Apple has previously shown that they don’t want questionable content (unless it’s violence of course) on the App Store.

Sora no Iro, Mizu no Iro (turquoise) because back when I created my vndb account I was immature enough that I picked the one that looked to have the biggest boobs.

Today we are proud to announce that in an effort to get fuwanovel's userbase accustomed to japanese text, we have decided to make it so that all topics are read and written sideways. We expect this change to have a great effect, and in about two weeks we plan on permanently changing the site to only allow for japanese posts
Cheers
The fuwanovel Staff Team.,

Neural chip would probably be best, but since that isn’t a thing I’ll echo Silvz and say a laptop.

The majority of Japanese-made otome games seem to have heroines in high school...I mean, okay, high school is kind of seen through rose-lenses there, but ffs, the majority of otome game players in JP (and here now) are older now. I want older heroines. College is acceptable, but workspace otome romances are also very much welcome.
(this is why I'm designing my own game)
Voltage has some pretty good ones, as well as Solmare, but those haven't really made the transition from mobile to CPU yet. (then again, the majority of casual gamers don't really play on computer...)

finiteHP reacted to Sayaka in Things that you want to see less of in Visual Novels
Visual novel developers and companies across Japan saw this Fuwa thread and, inexplicably, decided the wishes in this thread absolutely must be granted.
And thus it came to be that Fuwanovel eliminated the entire medium of visual novels.

I agree with a lot of these, but I’m too lazy to list them all. I’ll add one that only applies to OELVNs:
Less use of Japan as a setting. This includes everyone having Japanese names in a western school. JVNs have that setting covered. If we want Japan, we’ll play ones from Japan. Show us what you can do with your country and culture.
