  1. Akumade, kore wa ~ monogatari  is quite a strange vn. It starts great but it gets more boring and confusing the more you read it, eventually... (minor spoiler)

    Spoiler

it degrades into nukige where you're spammed h-scenes. Then the final route opens and the ohhh moments start.

It does hint the culprit but what really gets to me is that it doesn't hint during the boring bits as to why its done this way aside from the 5 or so voice only lines right at the beginning. Even though it was kinda explained later, I got the feeling that I've been scammed into ~10-15hours of below average vn.

I'd prefer Etatoto over it for mystery fans just because this is an extremely frustrating read for a good portion of the vn.

Happy for me to share my thoughts with full spoilers in a pm for your blog if you want.

  2. Pretty sure those special looking CGs are on purpose to match the atmosphere. I didn't pick out too big of a difference between the hcg vs normal cgs.

Personally I thought the story could use a little bit more slice of life after the op shows up (saying the reason would be spoiler) to hint the mystery rather than what it had done though.

Text hookers don't work on the game though, that's a downer for people relying on them.

  3. I like to compare this to movies/tv shows/anime, sometimes you just happen to be reminded (through conversations or discussions) about a particular scene which will cause you to go and rewatch it in say an evening as the commitment there is only around a few hours - with tv shows and anime there's the big temptation to fast forward to the interesting scenes on rewatches.

With VNs it's much harder as I find that a majority of plot/interesting scenes seem to stick and other trivial/unimportant/uninteresting scenes fade. I definitely wouldn't want to re-read 20hours of boring stuff just to refresh myself on 2 hours of interesting scenes.

I also seem to find enjoyment in remembering the plot points/awesome scenes of how a VN went vs actually reading it again. The Engrish from Baldr sky - impression sublimes to memories - is actually pretty true as I can still clearly remember my first few VNs quite well.

  4. My guess is Frontwing is trying the Grisaia Meikyuu/Rakuen formula again - while Meikyuu's ending is not appreciated by the fanbase, pretty sure it helped Frontwing on the hype side. As I haven't read Corona Blossom I can't comment as to whether it ends like Meikyuu.

Baldr Sky was released in 2 parts - it's quite strange to see it released as 2 games several months apart rather than one since it is really just one game. In this case the second half was much better than the first half.

I still remember the frustration of people waiting for the next installment of Higurashi/Umineko From Ryuukishi07 back in the days, pretty sure that's what got him so famous.

  5. I completely underestimated the length of this VN when I read it - with common and 5 lengthy routes of enforced playing order, it should really be listed on long in VN as long.

Some minor complaints (I'll mark as spoiler just in case):

    Spoiler

The letter in the beginning was the big hitter - too vague in the first read, but makes more sense the second/third time you read it, but it adds surprisingly little value to the overall story even though it sounded important.

I was a little disappointed with the routes not going into the background into the curses' origin (no the FD didn't quench my thirst), you sort of have to just accept it as part of the setting and that they know they'll get eaten by the curse if they break the rule (even though they're never seen it themselves).

Also Koyori's curse is a little... inconsistent throughout the story.

And no after story to that tear-jerking final route - I was expecting it in the FD but... no spoilers from me here!

Friendship (while not the central theme) does play a big part in this VN though - there are elements of the "friends come together to can solve problems" feel to it.

I have to admit this is one of the VNs where the Protag is the best character in the VN - which is rare in a VN as heroines or other characters usually take the spotlight.

  6. Similar story here with regards to JRPGs and MMOs.

I found my addiction to JRPGs is due to their story (fantasy/sci-fi genre) than its gameplay (though some still catch my interest) - thus moving to more story driven mediums for entertainment, i.e. VNs and books.

Also achievements and bonus dungeons (coughdlccough) in games these days are the worse thing ever as the goals are usually on the achievable but take a long time side - where's the "switch off the console and think about how good the game was" feeling once the credits finish rolling?
