FYI, to give folks more time to finish Deardrops, we're intentionally not starting next month's reading club just yet, since it seems like a lot of people (including me!) still aren't done, and we want to give people a chance to finish and talk more.

Now, that said, it seems like enough people have finished or at least made substantial progress that I figured I'd offer up a few discussion prompts to get the ball rolling, so without further ado (even if you reply, don't feel obligated to answer all of them unless you really want to):
What's your favorite aspect of the game so far? Anything you don't like? Who's your side favorite character (i.e., outside of the heroines, Shouichi, and Gonda), and why? What do you think of the way the text forcibly goes to auto-mode in certain concert scenes? Does it make it more immersive? Less?

I'll be honest the h-scene content of pee is not my thing. I mainly backed this to support the company's well run kickstarter and them being new...hoping the game is still enjoyable if I fast forward through the pee scenes though.

kyrt got a reaction from Arkamondal in recommend me jrpg's
    PC Recommendations:
Grandia II: Long held by jrpg fans to have one of the best combat systems for the genre of game, the HD Remaster is a great PC version of the game. It comes with both english and japanese dialogue and multiple difficulty modes. The game itself, while the story is a bit cliche, is rather entertaining and enjoyable nonetheless. One point for it (or against for some) is that the game can be completed in about 40 hours which is rather short for most jrpgs. While it is not a perfect game it is one of the better jrpgs on Steam.
Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD: You may be wondering why I have this Final Fantasy game (all are varying degrees of enjoyable) on here and not a different game. The simple answer is that the PC HD Remaster has additional features that can make grinding a lot easier. The game comes with 5 potential boosters which do the following (hit escape to see the menu); speed mode (toggles between normal, 2x speed, and 4x speed...no skipping cutscenes and doesn't affect menus though), supercharge mode (not sure what this does but I imagine it will make people hit like a truck, Encounter Mode (increase or decrease enemy encounter rate), Auto-Battle Mode (use this along with the speed mode and grinding is easy as hell and speeds up the process), Hud mode (toggles the hud on or off so you can take screenshots). You don't have to use any of them but the speed and auto-battle mode makes grinding less tedious if you decide to do it. The story is pretty good for the most part and the characters have character and can be interesting but it is a bit boring at the beginning but gets better as it goes on...a bunch of side quests, minigames, etc... that you can do if you want (it's optional), and it's the first final fantasy game to release with dialogue (at least back when it released).
Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky: This is is a great jrpg it has some quirky personalities but it has character and plot and has pretty solid gameplay while also giving you a very interesting look at the world that the game takes place in. I can't really do any game justice with just talking about it but this is one of my favorite jrpgs to come out recently.
Valkyria Chronicles: A unique experience. It more or less rebooted a genre of game...similar gameplay to xcom, fire emblem, suikoden in which characters can be recruited and then can permanently die. Valkyria Chronicles gives nearly all the characters a bit of personality and it has a pretty solid story and gameplay. (romance and bread!)
Tales of Symphonia: Not the best port but there is a mod to make it more manageable on PC. I was a fan of the Tales series growing up and even like it to this day even if I dislike some practices of the current PC crowd. It deals with pretty mature content and while friends and all that is a thing (it's a jrpg) it's not nearly as emphasized as something like Graces F. It has an interesting world and interesting characters with a decent story. But again unless you use the mod might be better off skipping and playing Tales of Berseria which outside of some DRM on the PC release is an excellent game with some great characters. I've not yet beaten Berseria yet but I've highly enjoyed playing it. It's quite a lot better than Zestiria imho.
Nier Automata: While currently more of an action (break the mold type of rpg?) the game deserves a mention for what it's been able to do so far. It's typical Nier fashion and the first time you beat it you've only gone through about 30-ish percent of the game if that. The game requires multiple playthroughs and is debatable about whether one would call it fantasy or science-fiction. So far I'm enjoying it but it is a bit eccentric. I would wait a bit before trying this one however as the PC version just released and needs some patching.
Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force (or something): Superior to the original Fairy Fencer F it basically is like Neptune games but with male characters as well. It makes fun of various tropes/genres and actually has an entertaining story. It's not for everyone but I enjoyed it. Sometimes it plays more like a vn simply because while there is definitely combat there is a lot of reading.
Final Fantasy XIV: This is an MMO and people either love it or hate it but it currently has a free trial period going on right now (up to level 30 I think) in anticipation for the new expansion.
Positive points: You can pick up Valkyria Chronicles, Grandia II, and Legend of Heroes on a sale for usually less than 10 dollars and X/X-2 during a squenix sale for less than 20.
Console Recommendations: Suikoden II (or the series in general...I personally really enjoy V), Chrono Trigger, Skies of Arcadia, Nier, Xenogears/Xenosaga, Shadow Hearts Covenant (or play Shadow Hearts then SH Covenant), Valkyrie Profile, Parasite Eve, Lost Odyssey, Persona/shin megami tensei series, Odin Sphere (remake version) and that's just to name a few.
Handheld Recommendations: Radiant Historia (although you might want to wait as it seems to be getting a Perfect Chronology...hopefully it gets licensed), Bravely Default, Fire Emblem Awakening, Golden Sun, Devil Survivor (3DS), Etrian Odyssey series, Dragon Quest (series in general is hit or miss with people but some good games in the series...I like V), Shin Megami Tensei IV (hell the shin megami series in general), Jeanne D'Arc, Growlanser IV,
Honorable Western Recommendations: Witcher series (3 if you can only play one of them), Mass Effect Original Trilogy (Andromeda will be hit or miss with nearly everyone), Horizon Zero Dawn, Divinity Original Sin (I and II), Pillars of Eternity, Fallout/Elder Scrolls Series, Dragon Age Origins
Visual Novel Recommendations: Aselia, Seinarukana, Sengoku Rance, Kamidori Alchemy Meister, Eiyuu Senki, Yumina the Ethereal, just to name a few

Just go up and say "Dude I'm here for my visual novel with occasional bouts of erotic passion". Admittedly adult only games are not sold in typical stores so I don't really think this should be an issue. If someone asks you what you're waiting for tell the truth and get judged...if it's enough for them to leave then obviously they were not worth it. Just don't give a damn and be honest about your interests.

kyrt reacted to Darklord Rooke in Mass Effect Andromeda - Ready for judgment (TuT)
I'm hearing people say that Bioware has gone to poo and are far from the studio they were when they produced such classics as KOTOR. People seem to have short term memories, this sort of thing has happened every time there was a bioware release. When KOTOR was released, people complained about the writing, Bastilla and Carth, the linearity of it, Bastilla and Carth, the short length, Bastilla and Carth, and the corny dramatic "twist" in the middle. Remember these EMOTIONAL and IMPACTFUL natural sounding pieces of dialogue:

I've always loved Carth's emotional reminiscence. Very natural. Did anyone else like that tiny afterthought of an info-dump in the middle? Or maybe people remember that at the beginning of the game when your ship was being boarded by a dark jedi, the guy who woke you up calmly explained things to you and gently guided your hand through the ship. How natural was that? Then came Jade Empire which everyone hated, and Mass Effect series which many people hated, and DA:2 which many people hated, and every time Bioware releases a game it's like all hatred of their previous titles magically disappears. I'd examine the phenomena but I have bigger issues on my mind right now, but I will say it's downright wacky.
The newest complaint though is that Bioware is "overrun with SJWs" and I have no time for that. If they stop catering games to you then stop buying their games. Also the Asari "fix" that anon dude did is horrible. It looks like a 15 year old's wet alien dream, complete with seductive overbite.
Anyway, Mass Effect Andromeda. So far I agree with InvertMouse that the game is nowhere near as bad as people have been saying. The writing seems fine. The characters are where Mass Effect is shining here, with dialogue revealing personality and character while still moving the story forward, and this makes the game quite fun to explore and engage in. A story is about people and when you have great people with (generally speaking) good dialogue, that's a major tick in the plus column.
Unfortunately (and I'm not far enough into the game to say for sure) I don't think the story will be one of the game's strong points. But considering ME2 didn't have a plot either, I think we can forgive them that. Bioware have never really had exceptional plots (ME1 being an exception.) The worldbuilding isn't on the same level as the original ME trilogy (which was exceptional.) Lastly the villains of the game sorta suck a little. All in all, it's not as good as the previous Mass Effect games, but the writing is fine/good.
The combat is better than any of the other Mass Effect games, which means I suck a little at it because I suck with action games in general. I've died 6 times so far, but I bumped the difficulty up to hardcore and I refuse to bump it back down
I can live with the facial animations, although as has been said they do make the dialogue seem worse than it actually is. I can live with the walking animations (we've all played Beth or Bioware games, right?) It seems like exploration will be a big theme in the game, so I hope it proves to be fun. I'm just heading out to Eos, which is apparently the Hinterlands of Mass Effect Andromeda, so I hope the experience there won't be overly dull.
So far I've had plenty of fun. Had to put the game down yesterday and was yearning for the moment I could get back to it, and that's always a good test to see whether it's been worth the $100 :3

It's the best Tales game released in a long time. It's miles better than their recent releases (Graces, Xillia, Zestiria) possibly as good or better than Vesperia. If you like Tales style RPGs you should enjoy Berseria. My sister loves the game :3

I think part of this has to do with how we expect more from RPGs and open world games these days. Horizon zero dawn just released which was fantastic, Zelda blew everyone away ... I'd mention Nier but that's overhyped mediocrity. The Witcher 3 permanently raised the bar (which Fallout 4 spectacularly failed to meet.) Mass Effect has always been an incredibly flawed series of games. ME1 had huge gameplay issues, ME2 had gameplay and story problems, and ME3 had that infamous ending, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the crap out of them :3 I'll be picking up my copy of Andromeda next week and I can't wait to put some time into it, but it seems a little like Bioware's not progressing fast enough and are being left behind.

It's obvious Frontwing has realized thanks to Corona Blossom that they can piecemeal vns for better profits. Hell the only reason I bought the entire Corona Blossom is because I wanted a conclusion after getting scammed via the first one. It's not going to happen again. I might consider backing a full game but not going to go anywhere near something with volumes. I didn't hate DC1, but I did find it really boring, with a few bad routes. DC2 was miles better. It still had its issues, like that goddamn Koko route, but still, the improvements over the first game were numerous. Better art, more interesting characters (although some people were absolutely obsessed over Kotori in DC1, I wasn't), funnier writing overall, better drama, an insane amount of content where the common route itself branches at multiple points (there is very little repeated content on successive playthroughs), and the list of improvements go on.
That said, DC2 still wasn't actually great. The fact that it improved so much over DC1 and was still somewhere between decent and good kinda shows how mediocre 1 was. DC1 was kind of a joke in how amateurish and sloppy it felt. DC2 is worth playing only to see how they take the same concepts and make a real VN out of them.
And apparently DC3 is quite a bit better than 2? To be honest, the intro sequence I played was a bit of a bore and I don't particularly like any of the characters, hopefully it gets better as Kyrt says.

3.2: I may one day pick the game up but not upon release and not until on sale at a later date. I do not like supporting localization censorship just to get a low rating on a game to sell more copies. Because of this I often will wait until a game is either used or a lot cheaper before I purchase a game that has been censored. Why give them full price for a game when we do not get the full game ourselves? I'll likely get it far down the road but I might also just skip rebuying it and simply going with the new DQ game coming out instead.

kyrt got a reaction from Novel21 in Top 10 Most Wanted VNs: 2017
So I did one of these in the past...basically it's a top 10 most wanted visual novels for 2017 list along with any honorable mentions you want to mention. Part of the purpose of this is to eventually go through and similar to what Mangagamer is doing, find out which games pop up the most often. At the same time this is hopefully going to introduce people to new potential games to look for as the bigger name visual novels are consistently getting licensed and people might start feeling as if there isn't anything. I will briefly go over a few reasons for picking what I did but you don't have to.
    1. Aiyoku no Eustia (The company behind this game August is one of the great hold out visual novel companies that according to opinions have great games. I am in particular interested in this game because the characters are supposedly adults and not in school. It's nice to see visual novels that escape the school setting and still manage to set up an interesting premise).
    2. Harumade, Kururu ( For a game that initially sounds like a cliche harem romp I have heard nothing but praise for this game and it's enough to consider me extremely curious to find out why people say it's more than it seems. I've liked previous games that have switched genres midway through and this one seems like it could have potential. My biggest reason though is simply curiosity)
    3. Twinkle Crusaders (Honestly I'm not sure why I think this would potentially be a good pick it sounds stupidly cliche in a way that the game itself might be funny. I'm not overly sold on the art but the fact the game also has gameplay kind of intrigues me a bit. I also think this is a more likely pick for a company like Mangagamer to pick up. I think it would sell well and that is good for whatever company decides to pick it up which is good for the medium overall).
    4. Hoshi Ori Yume Mirai: Honestly the real thing about this one that is selling me on the initial idea is the idea that the relationships will occur over time. I don't know how accurate this is but if that's the case I'd be for it. The art looks pretty solid and I've heard it's pretty long and while it has some routes better than others I'm interested enough that I wouldn't mind it. I am mainly jumping on board this one because a bunch of people are saying it's good no idea if this is true or not).
    5. White Album 2: (I highly doubt that we would get this game but then look at what else has been happening recently with all the other licenses. It's not impossible. I actually really enjoyed the anime and would love to see the actual game version of events as generally the story will be better in the written medium).
    6. Akatsuki no Goei Trilogy: (Don't ask me why I want this trilogy so much but I do. It sounds hell of a entertaining and might not be as it seems at first glance. I rather like the art and the premise and the character designs. It was one of the first non-translated visual novels that I ever heard of and it's probably why this and Parfait ~Chocolat Second Brew~ have been on my most wanted visual novels list for a long time. The premise of this makes me think it would sell well as well which is a plus. It's a bit older than some but damn I would love to see this.
    7. Evolimit/Bullet Butlers: Tokyo Babel is so far enjoyable. Not the greatest visual novel but I like a lot of what it is trying to do. Propeller is showing themselves to be capable and I wouldn't mind reading two of their so-called biggest hits.
    8. Eushully (any): (A number of visual novels I wouldn't mind from this company: Amayui Castle Meister (not yet out but it's in the same series as Kamidori Alchemy Meister so I would like to see it one day...extremely unlikely to get released in 2017 though even if Eushully did decide to release in the west). Ikusa Megami Zero, Ikusa Megami Verita, or Soukoku no Arterial. Biggest reason is the gameplay as Eushully is one of the big gameplay visual novel creators and for the most part they have decent or great game releases according to popular opinion.
    9. Scarlett: (I really like the idea of multiple protagonists in game that tells a good story through it. The game premise is a simple little story about 2 people and their different worlds and loves. It's one of the older visual novels on this list but I usually end up liking these types of visual novels so this one has enough in it to get me interested).
    10. Soushuu Senshinkan Gakuen Hachimyoujin: Light just entered the translated vn scene and they have quite a few visual novels that look interesting that I wouldn't mind reading at some point in time, this is just one of them.
Honorable Mentions: Hatsuyuki Sakura, Koiiro Soramoyou, Subarashiki Hibi ~Furenzoku Sonzai~, Tropical Kiss, Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai, Sakura no Uta -Sakura no Mori no Ue o Mau-, Evenicle, Ao no Kanata no Four Rhythm, Sanoba Witch, Sengoku+Koihime~Otome Kenran *Sengoku Emaki,  Amairo*Islenauts, Sekai de Ichiban Dame na Koi, Amatsutsumi, HHG Megami no Shuuen, , Da Capo III: spin off and fandisc (preferably mangagamer should bundle them together) Lovesick Puppies -Bokura wa Koi Suru Tame ni Umaretekita-, and Liar-Soft titles in general.
Unlikely Hopes: 18+ Pulltop titles (Miagete Goran, Yozora no Hoshi o), Muramasa,  Tsukihime Remake, Ore-tachi ni Tsubasa wa nai - under the innocent sky, ChuSinGura 18+(better translation), AstralAir no Shiroki Towa, 18+ Baldr Sky, Hatsuru Koto Naki Mirai Yori, Kono Yo no Hate de Koi o Utau Shoujo YU-NO (or the older version)
nukige because might as well: No Pantsu!!, Henshin!!! ~Pantsu ni Natte Kunkun Peropero~, Change! ~Ano Ko ni Natte Kunkun Peropero~,
Honestly there's quite a few visual novels out there still that could potentially be interesting. Unfortunately unless the visual novel market increases in quality instead of quantity we may eventually find ourselves suffering the quality drought (if we catch up) that I've been told has been hitting Japan. Perhaps looking to original english language or (other language) visual novels is not a bad thing perhaps they can help drive the market with new ideas. Regardless as western audiences we have plenty more stories to look forward. What other games are people hopeful to get licensed or translated? Feel free to discuss and post your own lists below.
