Your 'just kidding lol' is not believable in most cases. In this situation you would have engaged in 'namecalling' behaviour, which is a part of abuse. That is an attack and is behaviour which is frowned upon. Notice that it doesn't matter if the victim is offended or not, you can be held to account for this. Just like if I punched you in the face, I would be charged with assault whether you were injured, offended, harmed, or otherwise. That should give you a hint that it's not about the feelings of individuals which denote a crime or a social 'no-no', because the feelings of individuals are fickle things.

I didn't realize name calling was a crime.

because its their choice to get offended? im sorry, should i use smaller words?

What if I called your sister retarded and your cousin a cripple? No doubt at least your cousin would get offended. But would I be able to say "Just kidding lol" and make it all better? No because words hurt and most people don't have a choice when it comes to getting offended. Maybe you do but then again, you seem like normal person. Well, about as normal as a beta can be.

booo hoo, are you also blind, paraplegic and crazy? my sister has the mentality of an 8 year old because she was born way too early, and my cousin is confined to a wheelchair until the end of his short life. i couldnt care less how people use words that might offend them unless it was directed at them because like rooke pretty much said, its the intent behind the words not the words themselves.

just as its pointless for him to post this stuff on fuwa where nothing will change because of it.

Wait so if getting offended really is a choice, why would your sister or cousin get offended? And why would you get offended? Doesn't seem like you think it's a choice when it comes to your family. Kind of a double standard don't you think?

I agree that it's pointless and I even mentioned it...

The sole point of someone becoming offended over a word is wrong enough to start with.

Blessed are those, who don't give a damn.

Guess you haven't heard of words like nigger, spic, chink, cracker, etc. Some words hold actual power over people. Even more so if those words are associated with a history of hate and making others feel like they're less than human.

  5. I understand what you mean but for some reason this one translation is the worst I've ever seen imo. I'm not saying there aren't worse translations out there but this one suffers from choosing weird word choices.

I think you might have ended up at the wrong blog by mistake? I wasn't the translator on the project; I was the editor. It was my job to turn Engrish into English. And while there are lots of things I would change, I think I did a fairly good job of that overall. Especially compared to the raw text I was given.

If you have a bone to pick about the translation, that's fine. But since my name isn't MDZ, this is probably the wrong place to do it. I don't speak Japanese. I don't translate Japanese. It's like me complaining to my interior decorator about why there are cracks in my house's foundation, y'know?

You're welcome to stay and voice your opinions, positive or negative. I'm more than okay with that. But I would ask that you try to be a little more civil about it. Thanks!

I know who you are. I also know what the work of an editor is. I'm just confused as to how you chose to leave/use certain words that don't flow good.

IDK about that. I'd wager a good portion of the general vn-playing populace is satisfied with this iteration of translation/editing.
If, as you say, we bashed every which translation that was not worthy of your judgement, then perhaps indeed that the general level of VN translation/editing will be better overall.
It will, however, also mean that there are that much less translated VNs overall (I mean, just see how many translations are encouraged to shut down for not having skills necessary to fuel their enthusiasm even now).
I can't say for sure which is more to the benefit of the western VN community.

You're making it sound like I'm the only one with a problem. If you ask around then more people would chime in. Hell, this guy mentioned something about liking or disliking the translation in the post so he probably knows that it's a shit job.

You might be right but that same mindset is holding back polished translations. The reason official companies get away with it is because a lot of people are happy just reading the work. If no one complains then they'll just keep on playing dumb and releasing shit translations.

  7. Sure. But "trash tier" is a fairly pompous (and unconstrucive, I might add) way of critiquing.
One would expect some levels of credential from someone willing to make such statements.

I'm just a person that likes VNs. What kind of credentials are needed? Cause I think that's enough to criticize it.

I would expect you to be able to produce a work of the same magnitude and of greater quality.
Otherwise, what I expect from you is a "hey, thanks for doing the translation/editing, but I think you could have done better", not "trash tier".

Not to sound ungrateful but trash needs to be called trash. This is why fan translations and official works aren't exactly the best. If more people complained then they'd release a more polished product.

  8. I'd much rather take that than having to reword sentences constantly in my head while reading something or having to deal with transliterating dots (god this annoys me so damn much now). I've had problems with the way certain words or phrases were translated in official translations, even phrases that were reoccurring. Though maybe I just didn't care that much about the tricky use of tricky because I lost interest in this game after like an hour in the first route. Oh well.

I understand what you mean but for some reason this one translation is the worst I've ever seen imo. I'm not saying there aren't worse translations out there but this one suffers from choosing weird word choices. Sometimes I even had to look up uncommon words used. They're not hard words but uncommon enough that I forget what they mean.

  9. You can always start your own translation and then do the editing yourself or gather a team to do it, if you don't like how others do their work you can easily fix that by doing it yourself and better, complaining about something that was giving to you for free is really easy but actually "eating the whole whale" as Darbury said is not that simple.

I can critique it if I want though. It's not like it's free from criticism just because it's a fan translation.

Of course you can call it "trash-tier" for the use of a certain word, much like the rest of us can laugh at you for it.

Now, I'm sure there's more to it than a word, but the comments you're leaving here are so incredibly nonconstructive that there's nothing to take from them.

It's not just because of zurui. It's been a week since I finished playing it so I don't really remember much about it besides that word. I highly doubt I'm the only that's criticized it so you can just look up bad reviews and find the faults with it.

  11. Too bad the translation/editing was trash tier.

Not really. The average fan-translation is garbage, and I'd say this was a lot better. Far from perfect, but you should probably stop getting so incredibly anal over a single word.

It's not a single word. Even then, the overuse of a single word can greatly ruin the experience. It did in my case for Umi's route.
