I guess I'm the old guy on the forum with my first VN being Paradise Heights, back in the days of that being new and topical in the western otaku community.
What, never of heard of Paradise Heights?  Come on, it was all the rage back in the 56k dial up days!
    https://vndb.org/v1012
Sadly, to make the game downloadable for the...ahem...community...the voices were removed, and those 56k piracy-friendly versions remain the only versions of the game available.  I've been wanting to buy the games of that era just to have them on the shelf in my library if for no other reason, with no luck.  I've always wanted to play the real versions of those games.  (T_T)
Season of the Sakura, Time Stripper Mako, Ring Out Les-Ring...it takes me back.  To say True Love blew my mind would be an understatement.

Archimedes is earned at the start of a turn after selling 30 items to the shop. You can easily buy back the items once you get her, so you're not losing anything besides gold.
@EcchiOujisama: Very Hard and Nightmare modes are for speed running so they aren't ideal unless you can carry over everything to a new playthrough. I had to borrow one of sagaoz's saves to do it. It's really hard to do a normal playthrough on it because I've seen enemies easily reach 30k troops by 100th turn and it's not fun fighting those because they can easily kill you in a single normal attack. Also, the troop multiplier seems to apply in dungeons and Shambala as well, so yeah.... that 6 Montezuma battle I mentioned earlier, those have 999,999 HP on Nightmare mode...
THE FINAL BOSS IS A FREAKING JOKE IN GOLD!!!! It's probably the easiest battle in the entire game. She's so dumb because she just wastes her turn trying to use that mass debuff skill which has some serious wait time. You have all the time in the world to interrupt her over and over again with critical hits and she won't be able to do anything. Just slap in Achilles with Dagda Mace or Ishigawa Goemon with some reduced delay and critical gear for her Flash Kill and you're all set. I fought her on turn 200+ something and she had 540k HP but it was nothing but an HP sponge that I easily depleted within 5 turns. I also had Faust, Nero, and Cleopatra to venom/poison/grudge/curse/seal stack her, and she's losing like 100k HP per turn, which is pretty damn hilarious.

    Skill Requirements

Lets get those skills unlocked, shall we? Here is a description of each skill and how to get them (for skills I don't have personally I have to use google translate names. I apologize. Since they are in order as they appear on your skill list, you should be able to figure out what is what. If you could leave a post with Seiha's translation names, it would be much appreciated. The list is color coded according to the skill categories ingame for easier navigation.

    Tips/Tricks/Facts

A lot of things in the game either aren't explained well, or are just hard to figure out. This section is here to help you figure out some things you may not have known, as well as give some more advanced tips.

    Enemy

-Yellow enemies are more difficult encounters than is the norm for that floor. You could even consider them mini boss encounters.

-After defeating a certain number of female adventurers of each class, you will get an H scene in the prison with them (you will get the prison through story progression). This is pretty easy to figure out on its own, but something you may not notice is that you can get multiple H scenes depending on the class type the more you defeat them. Refer to the Enemy H Scene section below for details.

-You can recruit enemy adventurer units by defeating them enough times. The number of times required is pretty high, so don't expect to get this early on without a lot of grinding. It seems you can recruit all classes. If anyone finds an unrecruitable class, let me know. I assume soldier is unrecruitable since they are not H-able. Same for peasants. I got a tip in my inbox that recruiting them is dependent on your exp growth, and if you level too fast you will miss them. Needs verification, but explains why some people are getting them and some aren't.

-You're acquaintances are encounterable after their specific quests as yellow enemies (Cass, Ayaka, etc.) Defeating them enough times rewards another H scene (except males obviously.)
-Enemies can injure themselves on traps. This could be abusable if you really wanted to, but you shouldn't need to. Just a fun fact!   -If the enemy has reserves and you clear out the active enemy units at the same time with an AOE, you won't have to fight the reserve units. Useful if you are looking to save a little time when grinding.     Party   -The max level is 99. After this, you will not be able to get any more skill points. You also won't get enough skill points to max out even 75% of your skills, so keep that in mind.   -Leveling up certain skills unlocks other skills. For instance, leveling up Warp unlocks Advanced Warp (not the actual name of that skill) letting you teleport to a place of your choosing, and leveling up that unlocks Escape, which lets you leave the dungeon upon use. Will compile a list on NG+ playthrough, but any info from others will help speed it up.
-Later on, you will unlock what appear to be upgraded forms of demons you already have. This isn't the case, however. They are merely palette swaps with a higher starting level. If your demon is a higher level than the new version of it, do not buy the new version, as it's simply a waste of money.   -It's a good idea to make Darx a hybrid character. Make sure he can heal, tank, dish out damage, and use plenty of AOEs. As the only character you can control (and as such the only reliable one) you want him to have an array of skills at his disposal.
    Items/Equipment

-To unlock more items in the shop, you do need to buy more items there. Actual money spent does not matter, just the amount of items purchased. When you get a scene with Raika thanking you for your continued patronage, you have maxed out the shop.

-Some items do special things simply by holding them. The description for these will say "held item", and they have various effects. If you can find the Hawk Feather (lets you see the enemy on the minimap even if they are far away), I recommend holding onto it at the cost of an inventory space, as its effect is actually greater than the effect some demons have. I also use the Doorbell (always shows all exits).

-Some equipment affects your speed or HP stats, but the game doesn't usually tell you this. Will compile a full list on my NG+ playthrough unless someone wants to provide the info.

-If you feel that you need more inventory space, consider switching to full body armor. It will decrease your speed and END (if you have good equipment already equipped that is) but will free up three inventory slots. Full body armor replaces your body, helmet, gloves, and boots.

-The best place to farm the XXX books is the Cave of Bueroza, as it contains more chests on average than the other dungeons.
-There is an item obtained from a chest in the Cave of Bueroza Floor 13 called the Cave key. This will open a locked door, also found in the Cave on Floor 14. Opening this door will reveal 4 chest with a pretty decent armor set in it, better than available store bought equipment. It isn't the best equipment in the game, and it's not a big deal if you missed it, but it's helpful if you can manage to grab it.     CGs/Events
-The gallery is unlocked after completing the game once on any difficulty setting. The difficulty setting does not have any affect on the story, events, or CGS, so choos ewhat you would like.

-After seeing a scene in Raika's Shop, if you go back to your room and rest you can go back to the shop and get a new scene. This will continue until you have seen every scene available for your renown level. Since this game's missions don't have time limits, feel free to do this if you are worried about missing scenes.

-By looting the treasure chests in dungeons (not magical chests, the ones that are actually part of the dungeon) you can obtain XXX books of varying colors (blue, black, and red). Getting 5 books of the same color unlocks an H scene completely unrelated to Bunny Black. I believe each color is a different type of fetish scene. Red is foot fetish/stockings fetish, the others I have not unlocked yet (the best place to farm the XXX books is the Cave of Bueroza, as it contains more chests on average than the other dungeons.)

-Keeping the Loam in your hired list (you don't have to set it) will unlock a cg and some scenes after an unknown amount of battles. This appears to be the only demon to do so.

-There are specific events that can unlock depending on how many jobs you have done in a specific dungeon, as well as the types of jobs you do. Doing cleaning a lot, for example, will cause other characters to comment on how much you clean.

    Enemy H Scenes

Found some info in the Japanese FAQ mentioning how many H scenes each enemy type has, so here they are. Keep in mind to view these, you must defeat the female in each class type a specific number of times and visit the prison. Check back regularly to see if there's anything new. If there is, go right back to the prison because you may have another one with a different class.
You must do the finishing blow yourself for it to count.

    Bunny Black

Bunny Black is the first of a trilogy developed by SofthouseChara, known for their unique simulation games. Every game they release is a simulator of anything from managing a Hot Spring resort to surviving on a deserted island. Unfortunately, this is their first game to be translated into English.

The English patch for this game was created by the hard working people at Seiha Translations. Big thanks to them for their hard work. They also plan to translate Bunny Black 2 and 3! As it is a fan translation, there are some mistakes here and there, but nothing major. I don't have any right to complain

Bunny Black (at least the first one) is more or less a simulation of being a minion to a demon. There is a hierarchy to work your way up, and the game is pretty addicting if not a bit grindy. The gameplay is traditional dungeon crawling, akin to King's Field.

This game is difficult at first, and some people may rage quit pretty early on due to it. After you gain some resources and get the hang of things, this game becomes a breeze (mostly.) If you follow the starting tips in this help topic, even if only as a guideline, then you should be well on your way to... raping women. A lot.

The rape in this game is very light. No mind break or guro(gory sex). If you have played Rance, it's a bit like that. Although in my opinion it is a little darker, but still not too bad. You can't avoid all of these scenes either, as when you rest to restore health and skill uses there is an H scene. Some are rape, some aren't. You can hold ctrl to skip through these quickly if you desire.

This guide is still a work in progress, and I rely heavily on the community to fill in the blanks, so feel free to leave any info or knowledge you think is relevant, or ask questions if what you need to know isn't covered in the guide.

    Dungeon Maps
Here are the links to each dungeon's maps. If your browser supports it, translate the pages to English. In Google Chrome, just right click and select Translate to English.

    Updates(Check back frequently)

Update #1: Compiled a list telling you how many H scenes are available for each female adventurer class. Also working on a skill list, but the tedium means it is updating slowly.

Update #2: Skill list mostly complete. Missing some max use info and  the English Patch names for some of the skills. I color coded the skill names to match their category color ingame. This will hopefully make the list easier to navigate.

    Update #3: Reformatted the guide.

Update #4: Skill list almost done. Just need the Seiha translation names for some skills, and the max uses for Poison Shot.

    Starting tips

-Don't gear yourself out in the beginning. Instead, focus on buying demons. Make sure to get a Heal Goo at first, and some type of tank (I recommend Werebear) Save up to get a Fairy quickly, as not only does it give you some magical prowess, but it is a competent healer. It also allows you to see yourself on the minimap.

-Make sure to do cleaning jobs and avoid battles until you have at least one Fairy, one Heal Goo (or another Fairy if you prefer), and two tanks (again, I recommend Werebears)

-When choosing a weapon, keep in mind that Spears, Daggers, and Shurikens will allow you to take skills from two skill trees. Dagger and Shuriken will allow you to use Edged and Ranged skills, while Spear will allow for Edged and Blunt. It is also worth noting that the ranged skill tree contains the only STR based full AOE skill in the game.

-In the Options menu, you should notice an option that controls auto saving. At default, it is set at 2. This means the game saves after every battle (even if you run away.)Don't be afraid to abuse this in order to save yourself some frustration/time.

-Do some grinding and you will be able to handle the Tower of Storms pretty easily. Just watch out when doing jobs in the next dungeon.

-Don't be afraid to leave a dungeon if you take a job and find it too hard. The job will not be affected, and you can come back to it later without any penalties.

-Watch out for cursed equipment. Once equipped, you can't unequip it without paying 1000 gold. They will also do continuous damage to you every turn in battle, so if you do accidentally equip one, remove it immediately. The best way to tell if equipment is cursed is to read the item description. If it sounds negative, it is probably cursed.

-You can use the arrow keys to move, or change the Key Configuration in the Options menu for a setup of your choice. I didn't notice this right away (oops!)

-You can assign your skills to something of a hotbar. In battle, if you go to your skills list and choose a skill, you can click one of the empty slots on your battle menu to shortcut the skill to it. You can only do this with 3 skills, and the top bar is an auto skill bar, meaning if you put your regular attack there, you can just click on an enemy and attack it without having to choose the option on your battle menu.

-If your demon dies in battle, you can rehire it at the shop (it will be at the top of the party list in red). The cost of this increases as it levels up, and also increases the more it dies.

-In terms of difficulty, from easiest to hardest, we have: Tower of Storms - Cave of Bueroza - Garden Lair - Overgrown Thicket/Frozen Wood - Cavern of Flames - Den of Malevolence - Overlord's Shrine. Cavern of Flames is ranked higher than Thicket and Frozen Wood due to having to have a specific type of demon in your party in order to move freely.

Thanks to Suzu Fanatic, it's now a little clearer what the tactics options in battle do exactly.

Attack- Focus on offense, but characters that can heal still might do so. All Out- All offense, none of your demons will heal. Survive- Demons will only use physical attacks, they will not heal or use magic of any kind. Standby- All of your demons will simply defend. If you are grinding last hits on female adventurers, this can make things go faster. Conserve- All demons that can heal will mainly focus on healing. All on One- All demons will attack the same enemy. Front Row- Your demons will only attack the back row. Back Row- Your demons will only attack the front row.

    Skill Point Allocation

Since you won't be able to max out all of your skills, here are my recommendations on what skills to get.

    Must Have:
Master of Unlocking- It's not required to max this, but put a few points in it. 80% of my equipment came from magic chests, and paying 1000 to unlock one is too much. If you so choose, you can abuse save states and open all the chests in your room, write down what the traps are, reload, and open them safely with no penalty. The traps are static and don't change, so this method will work. I used it about halfway through the game because some of the trap penalties are a little steep. (4000 gold if it's a bomb? Way overkill.) Combat Medic(and all spells it unlocks)- The AI is... unreliable at best when it comes to healing. For instance, with a team of 9 my healer was using the highest tier all heal spell whenever one character took a single point in damage. It's best to learn these yourself. Warp Magic- Don't max this skill, just raise it until you get Adv Warp Magic, since this lets you teleport anywhere you choose as opposed to randomly. Also put a point into Spatial magic, as this lets you exit the dungeon immediately. Weapon Skill- Whichever weapon skill tree you choose, put points into it early so you can unlock more weapon skills. I chose Edged weapons, and at level 5 you get a skill that hits the whole front row, which stays useful for most of the game. Charismatic- Probably the most important. Get this as early as possible, because once you max it you unlock skills that raise your whole party's stats by 5 (as a passive.) which you should also max. Recommended:
At least one type of magic- Choose an element you like, and raise it until you get the Piercing and Wide versions of it. Raise those until you get the Adv magic of that element. These skills will let you hit a column, row, and the whole field respectively. It's good to have as many AOE skills as possible.  Weapon/Magic Master- If you are a mage, choose magic obviously. These will strengthen all of your weapon/magic skills. Steadfast/Magic Resistant- If you are making Darx into a tank, max both of these ASAP. If not, then consider only raising these halfway. Chicken Heart- Pretty handy for emergency situations. Most games I don't recommend these types of skills, but here you will probably need it. Popular- You have to sink quite a few points into this, but with some of the higher costs towards the end of the game it is worth it. Good Haggler- As I have stated, I used magic chests for most of my equipment, so I recommend this over VIP treatment. If you choose to sell chests, then get VIP treatment instead. Quick Learner- This one is up to you. I'm about 70% through the game, and with some grinding am already level 99 (max level). I did max this skill pretty early on, but if you don't want to reach max level too early you might consider only raising it halfway, or not at all.  Avoid:
Vanishing Act- As far as I can tell, this skill does nothing. I used it four times in a row and it didn't do a thing. Appraiser- It only costs 100 to appraise at the shop, and you will be going there to sell loot anyways so there's no reason to take this. You might be able to justify this if you only take the first level early in the game when you are broke, but at that point you will need other skills more than this. Status Effect magic- There virtually 0 application for these. Most battles will end too quickly for these to make a difference. I feel as though the same can be said for stat buffs (I never used them) but not to the degree that I would say to avoid them. Medicine Man- Perhaps it's just me, but I never use healing items. So this skill is pretty useless. You can put some points into it if you use healing items, but otherwise don't bother. Any of the skills that aren't listed each have their uses depending on your build and/or patience. After the first bit when you are gathering resources the game gets much easier, so keep that in mind when figuring out which skills to take as well.

EcchiOujisama got a reaction from Suzu-senpai in Help Me Please
You will find the legitimate price of H games to be quite high by western standards, when you are fortunate enough to even find a Japanese company that will take your money and supply you with the product.  Sometimes Amazon.co.jp will allow you to buy new products sold by Amazon outside of Japan, other times they will not.  You can try dlsite.com to see if they happen to have a title you want, or take a look at auctions.yahoo.co.jp to see if you can find a used copy at a price that won't break the bank after paying a proxy bidding company to bid on it for you and ship it to you.
If you don't mind a download, you can also try purchasing directly from the publisher's website.  That is typically the cheapest way to get a game legitimately when you are not in Japan.  Unfortunately, the link at VNDB leads to a domain that certainly isn't being used by a Japanese game company so that may not help you a whole lot.  If you happen to know what the new URL is, I'd suggest looking for a way to buy it there.

    Summary

Mihama Academy - on the surface, a closed learning environment established to nurture students who find themselves at odds with the world around them; in actuality, an orchard-cum-prison built to preserve fruit that has fallen too far from its tree.

Whatever the circumstances behind its establishment, Mihama Academy is at present home to five female students, all with their own reasons for "enrollment." For better or worse, each girl has established a routine obliging of her current situation; life moves at an idle, yet accommodating pace within the walls of Mihama.

Yet with the arrival of the institute's first male student, the nearly preposterously opaque Kazami Yuuji, the students at Mihama begin to fall out of step with their predetermined rhythms. Will Yuuji prove to be the element the girls around him needed to take hold of their lives once more, or will the weight of their pasts prove too steep a wall to overcome?

And in the first place, just who is Kazami Yuuji? While the true nature of the "job" he is wont to alight to at the most haphazard of moments remains shrouded in secrecy, one thing is for certain - his encroachment upon the quiet orchard known as Mihama Academy will prove itself momentous in one way or another. And of course, one cannot discount the possibility that perhaps Yuuji himself carries the weightiest past of any of the students...

Ending Guideline / Suggested Route Order
The game has a similar structure to G-Senjou no Maou in that its plot branches into a heroine's route at certain choices, although each of them is valid in its own as there's no true end. After entering a heroine's route the choices boil down to a single one for good/bad end.

Following the flow of the story and entering each route as soon as you encounter them would lead to the following order: Makina -> Amane -> Sachi -> Michiru -> Yumiko.

    That said,

Summary In the school the three people met. Their relation had been changed in the season, and turned into three love stories.

Makoto has been admiring a girl he has seen on the train. That girl is Kotonoha Katsura, and he even managed to take a photo of her with his cell phone. Due to new seating in his class, he ends up next to Sekai Saionji, a nosy, but sweet and sincere girl. As she snoops for his cell phone while talking to him, she discovers his crush and vows to help him until Kotonoha agrees to go out with him. When Sekai finally gets them together, she realizes her own feelings after finding out that the person Kotonoha liked was, in fact, Makoto. While waiting for her train next to Makoto, who was waiting for Kotonoha, she has him talking about how he can repay her for all of her help. Before leaving for her train, she kisses him and cries when she boards the way home. Kotonoha happily arrives for her date with Makoto shortly after. With all three main characters carrying different expressions on their faces, the story begins.   Ending Guideline / Suggested Route Order In School Days HQ, there's 22 possible endings for the player to experience. The endings are divided in: Main Heroines:  Kotonoha (7 Endings) and Sekai (5 Endings) Sub Heroines: Hikari (2 Endings), Otome (1 Ending), Setsuna (1 Ending) Two Harem Endings And lastly 4 Bad Endings. When Sekai gets sick and asks Setsuna to take over for her at her part-time job at Cafe Radish, Setsuna takes the job even though she doesn't like the revealing uniforms and has no experience as a waitress.
She only continues because she learns that Makoto lives nearby; it’s the chance for Setsuna has been secretly hoping for: a chance to start something special with Makoto.
However, instead of seeing Makoto more often, she has an unfortunate accident during her first meeting with Inori, who ends up becoming her roommate.

EcchiOujisama reacted to Down in Learning Japanese - Useful resources
This thread still needs help to grow. Feel free to post your useful resources, with a small description of what it is. You can also ask any questions related to this topic.

    ------------

Chances are, if you read VN, at some point you'll get interested in learning Japanese. This thread will NOT tell you how to learn japanese, I'm not qualified for that. This is a compilation of useful resources you might need, put together by helpful members and myself.

If you know absolutely nothing about the language, I recommend you to read a bit about it before. Read some wikipedia pages and the introductions of various guides. The best way to approach things is probably to try out a bit of everything and see what works for you.

Here are the categories of resources presented:

*Learning methods: more-or-less complete schedule other people put together.
    *Useful softwares, apps & cie
    *Kanji & Kana
    *Grammar
    *Practice material

    Learning methods
Those hardly consist of rigid guides that'll take you all the way, but they might help to give you an idea on how to approach learning the language. Don't spend too much time looking for methods, you'll most likely end up doing things in a different way anyway.
Tae Kim's complete guide to japanese (everything is not complete yet)
Nukemarine's Suggested Guide for Beginners "It's a guide on how to learn japanese by plowing through anki cards in a effective manner. It's made by a community member at Koohi forums. (I'd like to mention you can learn vocab very fast with this method and keep it in memory. But you learn without a lot of context, which has its negative sides.)" (Bolverk)
The Tay way  (note that this is from 2013 and no longer in use)
Aaeru's "learn how to read VN in two years"

    Useful softwares
Those are basic tools you'll almost certainly need, or at least try out, in your learning of japanese.

Google IME: Allows you to type in Japanese. Click this link, click the big blue button, install: you can now switch your typing mode to japanese.
Rikaichan: Firefox app that gives you a dictionary entry for a word by simply hovering over it. Extremely useful. Also exists for Chrome.

Anki: A flash card software with a built-in algorithm for learning efficiency. Exists on Android and iOS too. (Regular hand-written flash-cards can be a useful tool too). Use shared decks to find vocab/kanji pre-made decks.

Note about Anki: the use of Anki is advocated as necessary by some and deemed completely useless by others. Starting out with basic vocab/kanji grinding will probably help you ease into practice material, however learning tons of words, or worse even tons of kanji out of context is not a good idea. It's up to you to find out whether you want to use Anki (and whether you can).
ITH, TA, Mecab, Jparser: ITH is a text hooker that'll extract the text from, say, a VN for you. Translation Aggregator will pass said text through parsers and dictionaries. Extremely useful to practice on VNs.
Some tips and other softs for ITH here
Chiitrans: a useful alternative to ITH/TA. Same principle. Read the tuto for more details.
Visual Novel Reader: Another alternative to ITH/TA.

Note about text hookers: it might seem obvious but do NOT use machine translations with your text hookers. You won't learn anything from the garbage it feeds you and you won't even actually understand what's going on, whether you think you do or not.
It is also not a very good idea to rely on parsers for grammar purposes. Parsers are far from perfect. They certainly can't replace a grammar resource and basic googling.
Think of text hookers as crutches you use until you become able to read without constantly looking up vocabulary. It is also a good idea to switch to japanese-japanese dictionaries as soon as you can - only they will give you the nuances of the words, and they're also much less flawed than existing free j-e dictionaries.

    Kanji & Kana
Learning the hiragana and katakana should be about the first thing you do. It's not very long or difficult. Becoming accustomed to reading them is longer but it eventually comes.
Kanjis are probably the biggest psychological barrier for japanese learners. I don't have a magical method to suggest, but do tell yourself it's really not that hard if you stop thinking too hard about it and trying to find the best, most optimized method for learning them. Try to learn the basic ones, see where you can get, and start practicing on reading as soon as you can.

RealKana: This is just an example among others of ways to learn the kana. It's the first thing you should do anyway, and it's not hard or long.
Heisig's Remember the Kanji: A method for learning kanji through memo stories, by association with an english keyword. Good for starters, probably won't get you through the whole kanji learning though. See Tay's guide and this website too.
Kanjidamage: Learning the kanjis through radicals and memo sentences. I'm not a fan of his method, but it has some interesting information in the introduction and on some kanjis.

    Grammar
    Basic grammar:
Tae Kim's guide: The most popular (and free!) guide on the internet. Rather compact, has all the essential grammar with good explanations and examples. A must.
Genki: To take things more slowly, or have a different view on points you didn't get. (No links for that one yet, it's not free, sorry)
Nihongomori: this is a youtube channel with videos explaining grammar, but also vocab and other misc things, done by native speakers (in english for the basics, japanese later). It goes from basic grammar (JLPT N5-N4 level) up to finer points (N2-N1 level) so it actually covers intermediate/advanced grammar too. The videos are pretty fun and well done, if you like the video media it might work good for you.
    More advanced grammar:
Imabi: Lots of in-depth explanations about various grammar subjects. Not recommended for pure beginners and not written as a guide.
If you want to go further than that, you'll need to go into japanese grammar books. Don't forget a simple research on the internet can give you lots of explanations about pretty much anything anyway.
    Advanced grammar:
If you want to go further into grammar than that (for example if you want to read 古典 and such), you'll probably need to go into japanese grammar textbooks.
This guide is approved as being really good. (Change the encoding of the page to Japanese EUC-JP for it to display correctly)
This page could be useful too.
Feel free to do your own research!
    Others:
A grammar cheat sheet. Not for beginners, obviously.
Nihongoresources: A grammar guide. Never tried it.

    Practice Material

General advice: Try to avoid material based on comedy (because you need a good enough knowledge to get the jokes), or that rely heavily on slang or local dialect. Also, avoid things that have too much technical vocabulary (hard sci-fi) or chuuni stuff with abstract concepts and archaic kanjis.

Chokochoko: Some practice texts (articles on various stuff), ranked by JLPT difficulty.
Children's tales: easy place to start.
Japanese subtitles for lots of anime.
    VNs in japanese:
*Relatively easy language for a story-focused VN.
*List of VN for beginners, with two levels of difficulty.
*A big list of Visual novels to read if you are confident enough (~JPTL N2).

I won't point you out to raw mangas, of course, but if you can find high enough quality scans (or can afford to import them) it's obviously a great way to practice. Every shoujo and shonen manga have furiganas on every kanjis. Seinen/josei may not have them, but it doesn't mean they're necessarily more difficult.
    Dictionaries, vocabulary resources
Note: Japanese-english dictionaries (the free ones you'll find on the internet) are pretty much all based on Edict. Of course, as a beginner you have to use j-e dictionaries, but 1) edict is far from perfect 2) j-e dictionaries are inherently limited anyway: only japanese dictionaries will give you the right nuance (and they're rather excellent). So as soon as you can, switch to japanese dictionaries. The jump is not easy but it's necessary, especially if you intend to read VNs with a higher level of language.
Overall, the internet is your friend! A simple search will often yield whatever you're looking for. Finding your way, especially in japanese websites, is the most useful skill you can develop (although once again you need to reach a certain level of confidence first).
    Jisho: Jap/eng dictionary.
    Tangorin: Same thing.
    WWWJDIC Dictionary site.
Japanese online dictionary. Requires good enough knowledge of japanese to be used.
    Slang dictionary. Same as above.
Writing recognition: Tries to find a kanji directly written with your mouse.
Tanos: Various JLPT-related resources: vocabulary and kanji lists, etc.
Blog posts and articles about learning japanese
Blogpost by garejei: Tips and a view on kanji memorization.

EcchiOujisama reacted to -Flashback- in Welcome To Pia Carrot! (PC-FX) English Translation
Possibly one of the trickiest translations to get it to work properly. It envolves several steps and I took a good 4 hours just to get it to work the first time I was trying to play this game. I will make a step-by-step guide on how the process should be done. Getting Welcome To Pia Carrot (PC-FX) to work:   1) Get the .iso file and the emulator. For PC-FX emulators I suggest Magic Engine-FX or Mednafen. Mednafen is a freeware while Magic Engine-FX is a demo which you can play the games for 5 minutes and then the game freezes. You can buy the full version on their website with no limitations: http://www.magicengi...mefx-test16.zipAfter that, replace the original .exe file that came with the one you just downloaded. I tried it on the other versions and it didn't work, that's why I recommended getting the 1.1.1 version earlier on.   4) About the ISO: First, make sure it's not corrupted. The first time I got the Pia Carrot iso, it did not work when I tried loading it on the emulator. After I tried downloading it from a different source, it worked just fine. Make sure there is a .cue file and a .bin fine inside the zipped file you downloaded.   5) Get the English patch. You can download it here: http://www.romhacking.net/translations/1372/   6) After you got the English patch, extract the files and put in one the same folder as the unzipped .cue and .bin files and the emulator. Make sure you have everything in the same folder, otherwise it will not work! Note: Do not open the patch file! Your game will not work if you do it and the .bin and .cue files will be ruined! Having the patch in the same folder as the game .bin and .cue files is enough to have it in English! Makes sense, right?    7) After you got the patch in the same folder as the .bin and .cue file, mount the .cue file into a virtual drive. Note: DO NOT MOUNT THE .BIN FILE. it will not work.   Open your emulator and try booting the CD. It should work now! Enjoy Welcome To Pia Carrot!

EcchiOujisama got a reaction from Darklord Rooke in Would people actually buy LN ebooks from amazon?
My point is, that unless you actually have a track record of selling a lot of books, they expect you to fully pay for the advertising and marketing.  If the only expenses covered by the publisher are printing and the editor, I'm better off paying that out of pocket and keeping 100% of the profits instead of 10%.

I hate paperbacks, and find it insane that publishers expect me to pay $10-20 for a fucking paperback.  It's a massive ripoff.  I can't understand the need for crappy hardcovers or trade paperbacks.  Run 10 or 20,000 and you're looking at less than $2 per book in printing costs.  My agent and I agree that they're just fucking cheap and that's why you see so many overpriced paperbacks and crappy hardcovers.

And yeah, if you move a ton of products a publisher will organize all kinds of things for you that will allow you to make more money than you will on your own, but like I said, you need to be at the very top of the top for that to be more profitable for you as the author.  The main reason to use a traditional is for the vanity of being able to say "I was published by HarperCollins!" or the like.  To some people it's worth making less money to be able to say that, and if that's your priority, more power to you.  All I'm saying is in today's market a traditional book deal is a terrible deal for an author who isn't going to be a mega bestseller or has to financially support the launch of the book anyway.  With all the time and hassle you go through to get an agent you can hit the Amazon bestseller list on your own.

EcchiOujisama got a reaction from Deep Blue in I have not read Muv Kuv Alternative, what am I missing out on?
I recently went through the main Muv Luv games (Extra, Unlimited, Alternative) back-to-back, so I'll give you the low down on this whole deal.

How much you read before Alternative is largely up to you and your preferences. To start with, the first two games of the series, Extra and Unlimited, are packaged together. In order to get access to Unlimited you must clear the Meiya and Sumika routes in Extra. There are three other routes in Extra, and honestly, even though I like Iinchou and Ayamine a lot as characters, the story they decide to tell is largely something I didn't want to see. From a storyline standpoint I actually liked Tama's route, even though the thought of doing an H scene with her makes me throw up a bit in my mouth. I would still suggest you play every route in Extra. Why? The characters introduced in these routes will show up in Alternative, and their appearance and roles will make far more sense. I also loved the "bad" end with Marimo, which I thought was awesome and wouldn't call a bad end at all. It answers a nagging question I had throughout the VN as well.

While we're talking about the world of Muv Luv Extra, this happens in the same world as Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. There are several tie ins with KimiNozo. As it is only in the beginning of being translated, and is one of the longest VNs of all time, it's probably not an option if your kanji isn't at JLPT level 1. I would say watching the TV series is absolutely necessary. You should actually watch it before playing Extra as one of the characters from Kiminozo has a good amount of screen time. Watch Second Season is you want, and watch Akane Maniax after you play Extra for a chance to see some Muv Luv characters in anime. AyuMayu Theater will make far more sense after you play Alternative, so wait on that one.

Unlimited is a different story. All of the routes are the same and the choices you make have almost no impact on the story. Instead of event A happening with character A, you could manipulate it into being character B with enough of the right choices, but the differences are minor. There is no reason to play the game more than once unless you want to see the H scene of another character. The endings are all EXACTLY the fucking same, to the point that it doesn't feel true to the characters. It's done to plant seeds for Alternative and it makes sense now in retrospect, but it drags on a LOT when playing for 100% and felt like a big fuck you from the writer to the fanbase IMO. I'd suggest making choices that seem like they will maximize time with your favorite character and to play Alternative before going through the game again. Clearing it to 100% after the first character was brutal.

Alternative is extremely linear. The choices you make have only a minor impact on the story, and after going back through it to see what would happen with all of the opposite choices, there's basically no difference. The game gives you a big middle finger by having zero benefits after clearing the game. No soundtracks. No CG gallery. Nothing. It's like "Oh, you just forked over 60 hours of your life and thought that would let you listen to the game's music? Well fuck you." There are only 2 H scenes in the whole game, and they're both with a character I wouldn't even want to bang in real life.

Now that I've said all of the bad parts about it, on the whole it's really great. Just about everything I didn't like in Extra and Unlimited tied into the story and paid off in a way that made sense. The effects that they pull off are visually stunning. While the others would have points where the story was interesting and would then drag, this went more than 10 hours before it even came close to slowing down once. The more you pay attention to little details in the prior games the more you are rewarded in Alternative. Alternative doesn't expect you to remember every hint about the way things might go and reminds you of lines here and there when foreshadowing is paid off. As you go farther into Alternative you'll be glad you at least watched KimiNozo as a lot of characters from Kimizono appear, and are true to the characters you've come to know. There aren't a lot of areas that are light-hearted in this one, but it will grab you by the balls and not let go for hours at a time. The ending is certainly divisive, you'll probably love or hate it, but the ending of the ending gave me huge blue balls for Altered Fable. I can't wait to play it.

For other Muv Luv games that are translated, Haruko Maniax could be played anywhere as long as you don't play it first. It's...kinda weird and kinda gross when you consider where the H scenes come from. Shows you a softer family side of Haruko if you want to see it, but nothing lost if you don't.

Chronicles vol.1 is also translated and should be played after Alternative. It's all new characters though and further expands the world after Alternative ends.
