Hello! I haven't messaged here in a very long time, and I rarely ever made threads to begin with, so please let me know if anything about this post is inappropriate, or if it's in the wrong place, etc. I've fallen in love with Bara no Ki ni Bara no Hanasaku (https://vndb.org/v3531), and have thought about translating it myself. However, I have absolutely no experience with translating games- how would I actually go about doing this? I would probably need to recruit people to help with technical problems like making a patch, but would this be an appropriate place to do that? If not, where do I get started? I'm not ready to commit myself either (especially as a graduate student, I don't have an abundance of time), but I was reading a rather poorly translated game with a friend, and the thought of the beautiful, delicate text of Baraki someday getting the same treatment really kills me a bit, and I think it deserves to be read in English prose that can capture the charm of the Japanese. I'm still only thinking about this, but I would really appreciate any information and advice for if I decide I want to go forward.

I'm putting this here because while visual novels are fine I guess, books, movies, manga, and anime are really the type of content I'm looking for. Tomorrow I am going to blow through the remaining four volumes of Kaze to Ki no Uta, and, well.. I have read more than enough Japanese tragedy porn to know that this will absolutely demolish me emotionally by the end. So I would like something to read/watch that is pleasant and relaxing without being boring or without charm. Thanks in advance!

Got to the end of Kaze to Ki no uta's translated parts. It made me feel really tired and sad, which is something that I think it was supposed to do. While it is 70s shoujo BL (ie, not at all something I would read normally), it really did sing to me and almost felt similar in tone to the type of utsuge I like, ahaha. A lot of it is really hard hitting and relatable, especially where the main character is concerned. The other cast members, while certainly not generally as likable as people, are similarly interesting. Definitely reading the remainder of this one.

The h stuff annoyed me because at the time I was in middle school and couldn't play those yet, but I ended up using Umineko as a gateway drug anyway and played Katawa Shoujo one or two years later. And then I learned how to "acquire" and it was all over for me. So I guess I didn't really feel it much at all.

I like No Thank You as someone who doesn't normally like bl. Make of that what you will.

I think it's definitely something that could be done, but good god would playing it feel weird. Also, I get the sense that the devs want to move onto something else by the way it was written.

I just finished Danganronpa v3 and was really curious as to what you guys thought of the ending (especially given how controversial it is). Personally I have mixed feelings in that I think it's a better conclusion than the previous two games had, but I'd be far more emotionally satisfied with a more normal one.

Favorite vn: Tie between Umineko no Naku Koro ni and Fata Morgana. The former has the best cast of characters in anything I've ever read and an atmosphere so thick you could cut it with a butter knife, while the latter is incredibly tight thematically. I'm glad you liked it! Swan Song is a really great VN, but I wouldn't point you too it for a good fix of happiness. Just sayin'. Though, there's definitely a balance of horror and levity, so it's definitely worth a shot.

If you haven't read KnS2, that's definitely worth it (especially as you liked the first one). I found it to be leagues better than the first one, and it's really atmospheric and beautiful. Gahkthun seems to be on your wishlist too. Gahkthun is wonderful and definitely worth a try. And like Funyarinpa said, Fata Morgana is fantastic and good if you're looking for something somber but not over the top or flashy.

Definitely tell me how it goes! Parts of it pack a real punch.

I like dark things. Horror drama and utsuge, for example. And as much as I hated its h-content, I really liked MonQuest's sense of humor and traditional rpg feel. I've been thinking of picking up Evenicle. If anyone has any recommendations for either of these things, I'd be happy to hear them. It doesn't really matter if it's translated or not, but my Japanese is a bit slow and if it's bloated I'll have a hard time with it. I understood Muramasa fine, for instance, but it was so ridiculously lengthy and slow that I stalled it. I'd also like feedback as to whether Evenicle is worth my time.

My friends generally all know, but I'm not weird about it. Everyone I talk to about it generally understands that I'm genuinely in it for the story and atmosphere, and doesn't judge me about it (I guess the fact that I'm a bit of a literary snob helps). Occasionally I get made fun of, but never seriously. One of my old school friends played MonQuest on my recommendation too, so there's that. Mind, she had a really skewed sense of humor, so there wasn't much risk as far as my social status or disgusting her. I generally don't mention H scenes to people I don't know well, but again, my closest circles all know and don't really care anyway.
