I liked it a little more than you did, but i have to agree that the people that made this VN had no idea who to market it for. It kinda fails as a action spy story because the yurige scenes fuck up the pacing and it kinda fails as a yurige because most of the H-scenes are between men and women. Fortunately for me, the way the relationship between the two main girls developed and the ramifications of a certain death in the story were enough for me to consider it a pretty good VN.

I consider it a classic among classics, but believe it or not i ended up slightly disappointed. So many people called it the best thing since sliced bread that i thought for sure this would make my top 5 and it didn't because i found stuff to complain about (mainly the pure adventure game portions and how over the top the final battle was), similar thing happened with SubaHibi. I'll still praise Ichijou's route until the end of time as the greatest antagonist buildup i've ever seen on the genre, though.

And this is why i consider Kajitsu a near-classic while Meikyuu is borderline good and everything else in the series is just decent. I will always praise how the long common route drilled the girls' comedy traits into your head just to reveal the disturbing reasons for those in each route, making you look at the common route in an entirely different way.

Even though my score wouldn't be that different from yours (i'd give it an 8) i do feel that i liked the VN a lot more than you did. I liked the story once the mystery really got going in the last two routes and i loved the characters (which is why i didn't mind the SOL scenes at all). I think RuiTomo's Girl Alliance might be the most underrated group of friends in VN history.

And this point you made really shows the distinction between directing and writing. A way that was done that really stuck for me was that when i was playing Da Capo 2, the love interest got embarassed and instead of telling this through text, the VN only showed her changing sprites in quick sucession.

I know you don't consider it because it's a JRPG, but for me Ikusa Megami Zero is a classic and i have a hard time believing it's worse than RuiTomo.

Keep in mind Dies Irae is more of a retroactive masterpiece for this month, because from all acounts the 2007 version is vastly inferior to the 2009 version that got translated.

Definitely share the sentiment about Edelweiss, it's like the common route tried to be a japanese version of American Pie and failed hard. I would call it barely decent just because of Haruka and Mizuki routes. Eiden Fantasia is even worse.

Nice to see there is a big chance all volumes will be translated. All in all, the E2 gaming TaiAli translation joins the Flyable Heart fantranslation as something that should only be replicated as a trolling easter egg.

I guess moege enthusiasts liked Nursery Rhyme, but that VN is definitely more famous for the op song that became a meme in the mid to late 2000's. Listening to that and thinking it was good in my pre-teen mind was one of my earliest memories from when my interest in VNs began.

After finishing it, i'm willing to call it a "near-classic" because the plot, characters and atmosphere are really well done. However, there are a few things that put the VN fairly below Cross Channel for me: i thought the solution to the mystery was a little too simple for all the slow build that it had (a newer VN called SeaBed had that same problem); also, i didn't really like the tips/links system, i thought it lacked the subtlety that Remember11 had and the fun functionality that 428 had.

As someone who thought Tokyo Babel was good but not great, my biggest complaint is that the prologue had this amazing atmosphere leading up to the fight while the rest of the VN just felt like regular chuunige stuff.

Played it and overall, i didn't like it as much as you did. I probably would've liked a more down to earth story, but i can definitely appreciate the direction taken (the last few hours of the VN are pretty much impossible to predict, regardless of route). My biggest complaint is that the routes felt too uneven, with Henri feeling like a bad end, Fuuko feeling like a normal end and Komaki feeling like a good end. This probably should've been in enforced route order.

Good list there, just like the last year. I have nothing much to say, although if you want to read some more VN perhaps I can recommend stuffs such as Damekoi and Aokana if you still interested in the newer VNs.

I don't know what exactly went wrong for you, because in this (incomplete) playthrough in japanese, the voices kept going well into the second act: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcETwoMH25C-EatAEUQ3GO8tti7eTjdvH
On the VN itself: i liked it a lot more than you did, but it was disappointing considering how ambitious it looked. Also, the promotional material on it was seriously dishonest, showing scenes from the last few hours of the game. I thought all that action was gonna be on the first half of it.

The deviation part was what really made me think about this time period as a golden age. I guess i got too influenced by Clephas' definition of what a golden age was and tried to apply it for otomes specifically.

I never really stop to actually look to the release dates, but I think the time period you mentioned it's the one the genre really grew a lot, started to look prettier in HD and started to deviate a little from the basic formula of dating sims. And if you look at it, it was right around the time the PSVita was released.
Older title tended to be either PC or PS2 games, like Kin'iro no Corda (2003). And the most popular ones, like Heart no Kuni no Alice (2007), later got ported to PSP. Maybe they grew along the mobile market? Otome fans surely love their mobiles, huh? So much that if you take only a tiny peak at google store you probably find several otome VNs and gachas. Hell, the Uta no Prince-sama VN (2010) and its sequels was never localized (because it's for the old dead PSP and it was never ported to Vita? No one would try to localize PS2 or PSP games in this day and age) but its gacha was (and it have a considerable fanbase of anime only secondaries, myself included, please don't judge >.<). And do you know Illusion's VR Kanojo? Yeah, they're planning an otome version VR Kareshi for mobiles only (at least for now).
Of course, you could argue that more games and mobile trash would lower the quality of the releases as a whole. As if. The competition seemed to got even fiercer. So much that QuinRose, an otome developer that made a lot of games during 2006~2010, suspended all business. And Rejet (of Diabolik Lovers fame) is not doing so well lately, after some generic gacha they tried to make failed. We may not look like it, but we're a picky bunch, we'll not buy any crap.  Usually.
Outside of this range, we can't not speak about Hakuoki (2008). Probably part of the reason Otomate, that later made Code Realize, Collar x Malice and other great quality otome games, grew a looooooot.
And I do agree that VNDB is not exactly the best source to gauge popularity, because a) as Dreamysyu said the translated works are severely favored there because it's what is available to the majority; b) from what I see, the otome fandom is not as present or vocal as the galge one in VNDB. IIRC the JOPs really like Shinigami to Shoujo, and it DOES manage to have a good rate even on VNDB, so maybe our opinions aren't thaaat different (unlike say BL games, that most of the translated games have almost 2 points less in Japan).
And for an ending note, F*** me Royally looks terribad since it have absolutely nothing of what I like in otome games and I honestly think that it was made for a male audience to fap instead of a female one interested in 18+ games. But to each their own.

The 18+ version is actually one of my favorite OELVNs, because it was one of the few eroges where the h-scenes were short and entertaining. The biggest negatives i had with it were that the alternate outfits are garbage and that the amount of unique characters made monster-hunting worthless in the second half.
