  1. I'm talking about PC-88, the computer that was famous because of hundred simple eroge. I'm stupid not to say it clearly. And you are right, the separation of ‘visual novels’ as a genre from the ‘sound novels’ came about as a result of other game companies trying to avoid the trademark. Leaf released their first vn Shizuku in 1996, but before this ELF released Doukyuusei and its sequel. Anyway, eroge is the base for vn genre, even today. That's how I see things. I have hard time to believe this when they usually use Ren'Py, the visual novel engine. As for Ebi-hime, do they need my pity? Because it's buisness when your put the price tag on your work. If you make shit in real life job, no one is going to pat your head and say "it's ok, you can try next time". But you can produce bad games again and again with Steam and blind customers who are perfectly fine with it. So, yes, I'm naive enough to demand the great game out of the blue from VN developers who aren't Japanese, because I believe they can do it if they try. The majority is not. PS: There're a lot of garbage japanese vn, you know. It's just no one defends them like we defend our poor OELVNs.
  2. I did this in the thread "Another Day, Another Winged Cloud VN", you can check it out. It was my mistake to not include them in my post. Honestly, I always considered them something else aside from your average traditional visual novel. But I cherish Cristin Love's writing skills very much to buy "Ladykiller in a bind". According to Steam the release date is 12 october 2016. Come on, it's too early to say. If it's really good the word will spread. You're wrong. Japan VN's industry began from PC-88 erotic games. The visual novel genre came from the adult game industry, from such professional company like ELF. And still eroge is more relevant and commercially succesfull then any other big story title. The first version of Ren'py came in 2004. OELVN's developers had enough time to make something great. But they've chosen easy money on Steam. I understand when someone is doing half-assed VN for fun, but pay for it? It's not a matter of choice to pick a medium japanese game or crappy short english one, it's a common sense. But I guess, Winged Cloud's fans could prove me wrong). And I am completely agree with this: We need the new Katawa Shoujo but with high production value, that can become a meme and change how people see OELVNs today. That is a prejudice on your part. I've read them enough to make a general opinion. I don't just compare western games to japanese VNs. I judge them like pieces of Art. They're mostly boring, not funny, very short and unpolished. Not because their authors are newcomers, but because they don't dedicate themself enough in development. And after they release their games they usually forget about community. The feeling I get from reading it. Like in Katawa Shoujo, despite the honorifics and japanese surroundings I never lose the feeling that I'm reading western visual novel. The way characters act, talk and fall in love is so different from typical eroge. The Fata Morgana is the game every amatuer should take as an example of great dedication. It has no decent backgrounds and voices, but it is capable to conquer our minds and hearts with its alive deep characters and engaging mature storytelling. And don't forget about beatifull OST. When the last time you heard something good from OELVN? Though my words are harsh, I truly wish OELVN's creators all the luck in the world, but I think they are moving in the wrong direction. The Japanese VN's industry is dying, so without changes we'll definitely follow its fate.
  3. Still, apart from Katawa Shoujo there is no gaijin visual novel that I can call great. There are some good things like Everlasting Summer and OTL, some passable examples like Juniper's Knot, Sepia Tears and Sunrider but generally speaking all OELVNs are just poor attempts to copy Japan games, their style, tropes and even characters. It's absurd, but the most English VN I've read is The Fata Morgana which is... japanese kamige. I don't understand why everyone so afraid to tell their own stories. You have VN's frameworks, people, that allow you to create any game you like. Just choose the theme different from the 'high school romance'. And for God's Sake, make a long decent story. Why English VN's writers are so terrified of words? It's visual novel, not Shakespeare. Do it more. Two hours OELVN standard is a damn joke. And please, dear Western VN's creators, don't use English VA for your games. They're already bad enough, don't make them repulsive. Spend the money on the actual plot and testing. That's all I have to say.
  4. You can't call yourself true VN's fan without reading this kamige https://vndb.org/v12402. It separates men from boys.
  5. I still don't believe it has a chance to succed, but Godspeed, Frontwing. You're moving in the right direction and the new name is a step forward.
  6. Are you people seriously having a discussion about how bad is Majikoi? The best translated comedy visual novel that actually is fun and sexy? That breakes most of the tropes? With one of the most professional VA out there? With smart and capable MC, likable characters and engaging writing? Sure, it has some flaws but nothing is perfect in this world. And blame top eroge for being... eroge is just unbelievable. Sometimes, I don't understand what people actually expect from japanese adult humour.
  7. If you like some scene, you can just return to it any time. Or you want to record a fragment with fraps for... general purpose :).
  8. So, no one's gonna comment about Wagamama High Spec? Is it really getting a Kickstarter, while it was originally planned to be released shortly after the japanese?
  9. I envy your optimism. But the thing is, they have been saying this things from the moment they anounsed the game. They just delaying answers to future date. First, it was Anime Expo, then Otacon, now it's the mysterious "the end of the year". The stream wasn't good, so did they specify the year?
  10. So, empty promices about Maitetsu +18 and Baldr Sky 18+. As usual. Different platform, same Sekai policy. And apparently Wagamama is getting kickstater?
  11. Sorry, don't know much about, exept that Steam version apparently has some font problems. Is it https://vndb.org/v14303 that bad? Anime, though mediocre, has its own charm . From my experience it happens a lot. Even the most brilliant author can not always create masterpiece but still manage to make a decent product. Take Steven King for example.
  12. My God, I didn't know that exists! So, thank you Why nobody cares to bring this game to Steam? Instead we get Wing Cloud's neverending lineup. And it sales on par with Stein's Gate.
  13. Yes, it explains how the things work in anime studio, from a simple idea to post-production. Don't mind moe characters, it's actually very grown up tv-show that describes a number of serious real-life problems. I think, many people would stop complain about anime after watching it. It will pass). For that I humbly recomend "Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu". The anime about students making their first doujin visual novel. It's a very mediocre show but it brings to light some interesting points about VN's.
  14. Yes, exactly. It's part of the great entertaiment industry after all. Anime, manga, ranobe, visual novels are all connected. Did you watch Shirobako? It's not about games but you can actually see, how passionate they are about this stuff. In the West creating vn's is still considered as a hobby. You're right, it's an niche un-profitable industry. But that's what makes it good. Do you believe we could have f.e. NTR, lolies in mainstream games or movies? We don't need media attention. I remember those SJW campains against Mass Effect sex scenes. We don't need famous writers, just competent enough to make a good story. Like Rin's route in KS. It's one of the best in OELVNS and it feels wonderfull even for western standards.
  15. Christine Love's games like "Analogue: A Hate Story" and "Digital: A Love Story" are literally the only OELVNS worth to buy, read and remember. For kamige we need a kami writer, composer and artist. We have all of them in movies, music industry and galleries but they don't care about VNs. I am a writer myself, I even have a book but I will never write for visual novel. It's just another type of literature. In Japan as I heard, they actually study how to write scripts for this type of games.
  16. I can't believe I'm saying this, but not all boobs are equally attractive. Sakura's girls are like KyoAni characters, same old shit with diffrent hair.
  17. Yeah, this ship is slowly but steady sinking, taking with them all the good efforts from another OELVN developers. It's a smal industry and the money bubble is about to burst leaving us with same old numbers. In a couple of years we will remember this time with nostalgia and frustration, because we had a chance to build a market but we missed it. Thanks to this cult-type fanbase.
  18. The worst thing is that they're ruining the whole VN's market. Now people think that typical visual novel is just stupid porn. The truth is, some of the worst japan nukige still has better story then WC's garbage. They're not the first to cash on steam, but they refuse to get better. I mean, they have money, why can't they just hire one decent writer.
  19. Sekai Project about WEE final episode: PC version estimated to release in Late Summer Let's hope you're right and the waiting is near over. For now I stop whining and start praying.
  20. Look, it's not the waiting that killing me, but silence. I can wait for as long as it takes but I'm afraid with such attitude and poor buisness decisions SP may die before will be released the games I want. For example, WEE was fully funded in 2014. They've gathered almost 100 000 dollars with my money included. It's way more then it's needed for the translation of the two relatively short episodes of doujinshi game. Now we have the first two on steam, but they have to Greenlight the third. Why? I agree, "VA-11 Hall-A" is a fine little masterpiece. Don't know about "Just Desert" beside that it has very bland voice acting. My favorite OELVN is "One Thousand Lie". But I can't say I enjoy western visual novels as much as japanese. They're still in different... how to say it right in English... weight divisions?
  21. Bunch of OELVNs, Kickstater's projects with existing fan-TLs and Nekopara. Ok, what can I choose... But as I said before, I've bought their games. WEE Episode 3 and Grisaia Trilogy. I just don't have them. Do I have to tell you why?
  22. Not the same thing at all. The majority - in my experience - of VNs either don't feature underage characters at all, or feature high schoolers going out with ... other high schoolers. (The games like to get cute and pretend they're not set in a high school, by using precisely ambiguous terms like "Academy", but they aren't fooling anybody. We all know these are high schoolers.) Middle school is significantly younger. Most games don't go there. Also, the rape in Shiny Days isn't just statutory - it's forcible. These things put Shiny Days significantly further than even Sweet Sweat in Summer (or whatever it's called, I forget exactly) because in that game, they're the same (nebulous, ill defined) age. Well, I understand this, though in our country there's no middle or high school. Just one school from 7 to 18. Even implying intimate relationships with minors is forbidden by public opinion and law. And it should be. Visual Novels are very different in my opinion because they depict fictional characters. I just can't see real girls or women in those 2D anime bodies. Like I can't feel a compassion to the random deads in FPS games. And I think you're wrong saying VNs don't feature underage characters so often. Majority of the VN's database is nukige and those games constantly contain lolie's H-scenes among others. Also, some popular titles: Grisaia (Makina), Hoshimemo (Mare S. Ephemeral), Saya no Uta (Saya), Maji de Watashi ni Koishinasai! (Kuki Monshiro), Eden (Sion) etc. Formally speaking, they are adults, but their appearance doesn't fool anyone. Back to the main topic, I take back my accusations concerning SP's stuff preferences. From my experiance I can understand that localization's business can sometimes be extremly hard and ungrateful but I refuse to stay calm regarding delays and lack of communication with fans. With every kind of fans not just Nekopara kids. As a customer, I'm indifferent to the SP's financial and organization problems. I sympathize with their wish to expand VN market in the West but generally I'm don't care how hard it's for them. Neither should anyone. Like when we buy some products from Apple or Microsoft we don't care about their states of affair. We can't help them but to buy their games. But where are these games..?
  23. "The House in Fata Morgana" would be ideal OELVN if it wasn't japanese...
