  1. Control Panel -> uninstall a program -> On the panel on the left hand side click view installed updates (this could take a few minutes to load) -> (CTRL + F) type in KB2803821 -> click uninstall if on computer. Like I said it's a longshot, but the patch has been causing many problems with games so *shrugs*. Also, Aaeru has said that the title screen going black for up to several minutes is perfectly normal (and yet would be incredibly annoying.) Something about the crack. have you tried loading up the game and then walking away to do something else for a few minutes? I'd try this first before uninstalling the update. Aaeru mentions a couple more things to try here: http://visualnovelaer.fuwanovel.net/2013/04/dramatical-murder-fan-translation-100-english-patch-released/ It's in the comments section, CTRL+F and type in 'black' to save yourself some time searching.
  2. This is probably a long shot, but have you installed Windows Update KB2803821? It's a dodgy patch that causes problems with WMV videos. It's reportedly stuffed up 'School Days' by causing video blackout, it stuffed up my 'Total War: Rome' (How dare they ) If you've installed the update, uninstall it and try playing the game again. If it works, be careful you don't reinstall the patch (turn off automatic updates.) http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft-windows/3-more-botched-windows-patches-kb-2803821-kb-2840628-and-kb-2821895-222807
  3. I'm dreaming I'm playing Wasteland 2 right now. Does that count? http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/08/01/a-day-with-wasteland-2/ Stop teasing us with your awesomeness you evil, evil man Not long now *deep breaths*
  4. I don't pay attention to the voice acting, so I prefer a silent MC. I also don't like the consequences a fully voiced MC may deliver. A fully voiced MC will make the game more expensive to develop. It may also mean fewer lines of text and fewer choices/branches in the game. The first consequence doesn't help an industry that's struggling at the moment, and the second consequence isn't ideal for consumers. And concerning voice acting in general, imagine how much money companies would save if VNs used no voices at all? A LOT, is the answer. They could then channel that money back into the game and give us more choices, more branching, make the differences between routes greater etc etc.
  5. Ouch. So harsh Persona 3 Portable is up there as one of my favourite JRPGs of all time, mostly because of the atmosphere and story. Persona 4 is not. However, my sister likes Persona 4 more than Persona 3, mostly because of the atmosphere and story. *Shrugs*, make of that what you will
  6. Played through MGQ1 and half-way through MGQ2 before abandoning it. The only reason to play the game is if you were interested in the sex scenes, which I wasn't. It gets old, and fast! Repetitive with pointless RPG mechanics is how I describe this game. I honestly don't understand the hype.
  7. Buy me a PS4 (when it's released) and I'll gladly send a preowned PS3 your way as thanks
  8. Twas the characters mate, twas the characters and their routes. I won't go into detail because it's boring so I'll just leave it at 'I didn't care for the characters in Clannad'. Weeelll, except for Nagisa's parents. And Misae (the only route in the game I enjoyed.) Oh hey, Little Busters. Another Key game I never finished . Key's games are unnecessarily long, it's as if the writers get paid by the word. They do, don't they? Come on, out with it, the more verbose they are the more they get paid, right? I completely understand. Some fans of Clannad consider Kyou and Ryou to be the best route. I, however, thought they were the worst characters in the game, but then again bore the pants off me..... Actually, that's far too mild a phrase for the mind-numbing tedium these sorts of stories bring forth in my psyche, but it will have to do. I'm not at my best right now. I suppose different strokes for different folks and all that. And why do the spoiler tags take up an entire line? Not complaining, it's just weird.
  9. Does this mean you didn't enjoy playing with your sister at the time? Oh, and you ain't old. You are most certainly not old......... Because if you're old, then I'm old and I ain't old! I'm still young, and fit, and stuff
  10. Just take a pair of scissors and cut right after Battlefield 1942. List done
  11. In my experience, it's difficult to get a consensus on which game is Key's best. 3 different people will give you 3 different answers. It's as if each game resonates with a different section of gamers. To me, Clannad swung viciously from incredibly funny to really boring back to incredibly funny. It was an incredibly inconsistent and frustrating experience. I ended up dropping it 10 minutes into afterstory. Kanon, however, constantly had me in tears and is still my favourite Key game.
  12. Only 5? I'm a moody guy! My top games shift with my moods! So what I'll do is just name my favourite game from 5 different categories and that will be my list. Okay: RPG - Baldur's Gate 2 (this changes depending on my mood, but atm it's BG2.) Strategy - Total War Shogun 2 (This does not change with my moods. Awesome game!) Modern RPG (it's a totally different category!) - The Witcher, enhanced edition (Yeah, Dragon Age really did pinch a lot from the Witcher, didn't it . Dark, mature, choices and consequences, excellent story based off the novels, shitty combat... but we'll just ignore that last part, okay?) JRPG - Valkyria Chronicles - (innovative but not pointlessly so, mature, beautiful, fun. An all-round wonderful experience. Then the sequel came out ) Sandbox - Morrowind (Yes I've played both Oblivion and Skyrim. Yes I think Morrowind is better than both. No it's not because I have 'epic nostaligia.')
  13. I accept that VNs take on more socially risky themes because of it's smaller audience, but I don't agree with the other points (if I read your original post right. It was sorta vague). If you're talking about how VNs are targetted towards more adult audiences, that's really only true for Japanese games. In Japan, not many adults play games whereas in the West, a lot of gamers are adults. So VNs may very well be targeted at an older audience in Japan (I really wouldn't know) but that's not the case in the West. The Witcher, for example, definitely not aimed at kids. The same with Telltales. In the West, the average age of a gamer is 30 years old, 68% of gamers are older than 18. In Japan, most gamers are young. The average age of a gamer in Japan is about 15. Most games released in the West are released for adults, in Japan, a lot of games are targeted at children. If you're talking about how VNs are aimed at a highly literate or learned audience, that's may be true compared to JRPGs, but seeing as their primary demographic are teens - it's not saying much. It's definitely not true at games in general. In fact, you'd probably be the target audience of CD Projekt or Obsidian if you could stomach their gameplay. Planescape Torment's 'What can change the nature of a man' is one of the greatest themes in gaming. I haven't seen it's equal in any VN I've come across (but I can't read the vast majority of VNs, so that may not mean much.) The Witcher's political intrigue is also something that needs to be experienced. Very detailed, very mature, aimed at adults and aimed at a highly literate audience. So true, mate. 6 years ago I couldn't say that, but these days there's pretty much a game for everyone :D/> Good times!
  14. Whaaat? Firstly, fans of Obsidian, Bioware and CD Projekt want to have a hostile get-together little talk with you! Secondly, 'Telltales - the Walking Dead', a game often referred to as a Western VN (maybe interactive movie would be a better description), wouldn't have sold 8.5 million episodes if Western gamers didn't care about storylines. A game released to much critical acclaim because of its mature storytelling, and one of the biggest sleeper hits over the last couple of years. 2012 will go down in gaming history as the year of the narrative, thanks largely to Telltale Games' tour de force The Walking Dead. Spend some time in the indifferent and bleak world crafted by main writers Sean Vanaman, Jake Rodkin and Gary Whitta, and you'll see the power of character come to life amidst a dead world. Over the course of the five episode Season One, Lee and Clementine became characters we cared about, suffered with, agonized over, and ultimately wept for. Through tumultuous side stories, like Kenny, Katjaa and Duck's tragic arc, to the many colorful characters we met along the way, The Walking Dead created such a strong bond between its characters and the gaming community that its reverberations will be felt for years to come, setting the bar that all narrative-driven games will be measured against in the process. http://au.ign.com/wikis/best-of-2012/Best_Overall_Story Lastly, I'd argue the opposite of what you're saying. Story is becoming a much, MUCH bigger part of gaming then it used. Take 'Tomb Raider' for example, used to be all about puzzles and gameplay, but now it has a gripping story and character development to boot. The story in 'The Last of Us' is VERY hard to ignore, 'Bioshock infinite' had a compelling story. Even 'Spec:Ops - the line', a military shooter, included a VERY strong story on it's single player campaign. And that's without touching the RPG genre. You have game designers coming out saying how narrative has become increasingly important over the past 5 years, with David Cage going even further with his view that games need to take inspiration from the film industry. David Cage is the head of 'Quantic Dream', the company who developed 'Heavy Rain'. I honestly don't see how western games are transitioning towards 'narrativeless gameplay'. PS - I like the 'conversation skip' feature. Because after you play through a game 15 times, a lot of the conversations you can recite by heart. I'd like the option to 'skip' them please. However, allowing gamers to accidentally select a conversation option when they're trying to skip a conversation is not cool. And yes Bioware, I'm full-on glaring at you.
  15. It took 4 years for the next 'Tales' game to be localised after Vesperia. But now, suddenly, we get 3 'Tales' games in 3 years? I'm not complaining, I just think their business strategy is confusing.
  16. It's not released in Australia until the 8th, but I plan on nabbing it as soon as I'm allowed. I'm hearing mixed opinions about this game, though, and it has got me a little worried.
  17. It depends. There's a lot of characters which people love who are considered Mary Sues or Gary Stus. James Bond, for instance. Captain Kirk from Star Trek has been argued to be a Gary Stu. Elminster from the Forgotten Realms world. Depends on how they're done, I suppose.
  18. When I introduced my sister to VNs, I used 'Second Reproduction'. It's a light-hearted, romantic, funny VN (with a plot which changes depending which route you take) that is short and feels exactly like a shoujo manga. It's all-ages too (I think). It was a great success, she ended up loving it. I couldn't recommend using Starry Sky in Spring, or Yojinbo - they're not as good. If you want to introduce someone to VNs, you should use the best ones you can get your hands on. I know nothing about Boku no Shokora. I also second Aaeru's suggestion concerning Hakuoki. Quality, QUALITY game! Link to review of Second reproduction, contains spoilers - http://animeguyspl0x.wordpress.com/2012/06/07/the-second-reproduction/ VNDB site - http://vndb.org/v3319
  19. The hero of Canton - the man they call Jayne, will be lending his voice to Warmachine Tactics! That news just made my day. EDIT: Oh, he's still in negotiations... But I'm sure he'll eventually sign up.
  20. Shinji Ikari (cliched I know, but meh.) I just want to stab him over and over again, and then do some voodoo to resurrect his ass just so I can stab him some more.
  21. Second Reproduction? Not quite medieval but it's not far off... I think.
  22. I hold a similar opinion to Down on this one. To me, visual novels aren't games, they're books which are told in the first person with graphics and music. They're like a natural evolution of the 'Choose your own adventure' books you use to read. I don't consider Visual Novels unique, interactive fiction has been around for a very long time and has recently made something of a comeback. I regard Visual Novels as an example of what the IF community could do with a little bit of backing and resources. Take a look at Emily Short's recent work of interactive fiction here: http://lizadaly.com/first-draft/ Now think of the work she could produce if she had a million dollars at her disposal...
  23. Question for people who know about codecs. Demonbane causes video problems for some gamers, and a solution that seems to work is to download and install 'DScaler MPEG Filters 0.08'. ( http://www.jastusa.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=6970 ) The question is are the video problems occuring because people have downloaded codecs like 'Haali splitter' which is mucking up the visual novel, meaning the above step can be safely ignored by most people. Or do the video problems have nothing to do with pre-existing codecs installed on the computer, and maybe people should install the above as a precautionary? Because I installed the MPEG filters as a precautionary even though I don't have any other codecs installed. I'm wondering if I should keep them installed or remove them. EDIT: As for sdrt4280j.exe, it seems legit and an actual part of the game, but you may want to do a bit more digging. http://systemexplorer.net/file-database/file/sdrt4280j-exe/13682710 http://www.isthisfilesafe.com/md5/E2631672D82B9B93667304709141EA31_details.aspx http://www.shouldiremoveit.com/GUILTY-CROWN-LOST-XMAS-47502-program.aspx
  24. I don't know anything about the SIMS, so I'll leave my character completely up to you. Question though - is 'Random.org's true random generator' just a complicated name for 'dude rolling a 6-sided die?' ... even when there are 11 options to choose from
  25. No. A troll is someone who wants nothing more than to provoke people into an argument/confrontation. Good trolls are quite civil and, often, funny while doing so, but bad trolls don't have the smarts for it and they quickly descend into shouting and abuse. People these days have a negative image of trolls, but I recall a few who were, quite frankly, extremely witty and absolutely hilarious. I prefer to call them wind-up merchants because that's what they do. They wind people up. To be perfectly honest, I have my suspicions about you as well <_</> .
