KuroganeHomura reacted to Nandemonai in Sekai Project fails to secure nearly finished Baldr Sky fan TL
We don't know, and never will, because companies never talk about this kind of thing in public unless it goes to court.  And believe me, it won't.
Maybe Aroduc wanted too much money.  Maybe SP are skinflints and gave an insultingly low offer.  Maybe the folks over at Giga were not impressed that someone decided to work on the title without their permission, and told Sekai Project that he would not be acceptable to them.
I figure the most likely explanation is Sekai Project was secretly negotiating for Baldr Sky at the same time Aroduc was secretly fan translating it.  And that neither one knew what the other one was doing.  So SP might have already inked a contract with another translator to work on the project.  It's still fairly rotten for SP to not even straight up tell Aroduc 'sorry, we can't hire you' and subject him to the no-reply treatment.  That's just straight up unprofessional.
The no-reply treatment is fairly common in the world of business.  If I submit my resume to a bunch of different places, I expect to not really hear back from places that have no interest.  They just don't respond.  I don't expect places that were actively talking to me to suddenly stop.  If a company and I are talking, and they decide 'this isn't going to work out, we don't think we want to hire you after all', but they've already started talking to me, or I've already had an interview?  Very bad form to simply start stonewalling.
Honestly, I get the feeling that Sekai Project's troubles almost all seem to stem from the unprofessional way they seem to be handling public relations and communication.  This issue was never going to make Aroduc happy (his work on a game he didn't even like is now wasted), but blowing him off is just stupid and short-sighted.  What if they want to work with him in the future?
Likewise, all the controversy over will-they-won't-they on whether their recent announcements will get adult releases.  If you take one of their twitter comments at face value, the only reason they didn't announce the adult versions was time constraints.  Okay, so why haven't they since?  Why have we been left to read the tea leaves, and try to read into statements like "well this game was explicitly announced for Denpasoft and Steam, this other game was only announced for Steam".  They said they'd have news to share at AX about Maitetsu uncensored; they said the reason they didn't reveal it there was they ran out of time at the panel.  Then why didn't they announce it at Otacon?  Or online?
So either they lied, or they were telling the truth and somehow something came up.  If they lied, and have no plans to make any such announcements and are simply trying to shut people up - this is terribly unprofessional, and makes them look bad, and makes people not trust them.  If they were telling the truth, then they are simply incompetent at public relations, they're so bad that they can't even keep track of the things they said they'd announce, or they commit to announcing info they really intend to announce but then it turns out they can't.
Either way I think SP would do well to get this under control.  They're generating a LOT of ill will towards themselves unnecessarily.  Even if the answers are "no adult versions of games X, Y, and Z for now, sorry, we tried" - telling the truth would hurt less than this.

It's certainly not limited to millenials. http://ncac.org/resource/what-is-censorship
The big point here is that depending on the size of the one refusing to distribute certain information, that equals suppression. Take the road example I gave and apply it to the Internet instead. Suppose every single company offering hosting refused to deal with anyone wanting to distribute certain (legal) information. That would effectively remove that information from the Internet - which is quite clearly suppression.
And if you're talking about refusal to distribute vs. refusal to make ad revenue available the same way it is for other kinds of information, well, people need money live, so being unable to make money this way certainly limits the time they have available to create the stuff in question (because they need that time to do something else that does make money). Which results in... suppression of that information, relative to if that restriction was not there and also relative to those not under that restriction.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship disagrees, as do the dictionary definitions. What this doesn't do is impinge on is anyone's right to free speech.
To illustrate the problem: Say all roads were owned by one private company. That company one day decides that you may no longer use their roads to transport VNs. Whoops. But ok, let's say they don't own all roads, just most of them - sure, you can go to the guys who own the remaining roads, but you'll be at a severe disadvantage compared to those who can use all roads. Which is to say, at some point (or rather size), the question is whether something is still like a shop or more like a road in that respect.
And sure, not being able to make money with something doesn't mean you're not allowed to do it. But imagine for a moment "you're allowed to distribute VNs, but you're not allowed to charge money for them". See the problem? Only difference there is between speech you like and speech you don't like.
Of course the flip-side is that the right to free speech does not only mean "you can say what you want", but also "you can refrain from saying what you don't want to say", so you can't exactly force a company to distribute any speech they don't want to.

Well, MG is full of passionate people who are not driven entirely by profit. It's actually pretty crazy how much of critically acclaimed but business-wise risky titles they localized so far. I just pray they are able to keep it up since most of the stuff I really want to tl is in the pretty risky category too (please buy good games instead of Sakura Spirit, people).

While he did indeed forget Sorcery Jokers you guys should also remember that it usually takes at least half a year between license acquisitions and their announcements. The effects of 2016 sales will probably be seen in 2017's AX/Otakon, not right now.

    Translation Project by Dergonu

Welcome to the land of NikuNiku.

    It happened without a warning.

In a world that was peaceful superior beings suddenly appeared.
They one-sidedly massacred humans and the world was swallowed by a whirlpool of chaos.

While our heroine Mia was shopping with her family, she also fell victim.
With her father, mother, and older sister dead, she desperately tried to escape, but before she could a different superior man appeared before her.
Falling into desperation and prepared to die Mia took up a knife and stabbed the man...

Read the rest of the summary and more information down below.
[VNDB] [Game Website] [Dergonu's review] [Game Opening]

After having worked on Tsui Yuri for quite some time, I have started to get a little bit tired of the constant stream of adorableness, and thought working on something completely different would be a breath of fresh air*. And so I started to look for some possible side projects, and thanks to Oystein constantly encouraging my posting of guro pictures in discord, I ended up choosing this game after he helped me get the scripts out. We already have some staff working on this, (specifically a TL, editor and hacker,) but we won't say no to a TLC and a QCer, so if you want to help out with that, send me a PM or post below.
    * (I am NOT stopping the TL on Tsui Yuri, and this should not impact the progress much at all, so do not worry about that. I simply wanted something different to work on, and this is perfect for that. Neither project is very big, so it should be totally doable to work on both without impacting my current schedule much.)

KuroganeHomura reacted to ChaosRaven in Frontwing asks your thoughts on an issue regarding Corona Blossom
I like that they are so honest with it. Actually, I don't really think they did something particular wrong here, the situation has simply changed. The same thing is happening on Kickstarter too.
MangaGamer has already reported several times now that since the whole Steam hype started, they got a lot of new account creations, most likely from Steam customers. So the Steam customers who were really interested in VN's have already moved on and went to the retail sites of the big VN publishers like MangaGamer and Jast. It tells a lot that the several year old nukiges Eroge and ImoPara are almost permanently in the top five for ages now. And the Steam users who didn't really get warm with VN's are less likely to buy another one. So the 'Steam only' customer group got much smaller either way.
And while newer VN customers are now happily digging through MG's and Jast's game libraries, the older VN veterans just don't get enough from a short and simple title like Corona Blossom, especially with so many quality titles released by MG and Sekai. In principle, it happened what most people wanted, quality and a known and popular brand matters now much more than before.
Or in short words: Welcome to the world of competition!

Mmm... right now Dovac and Sekai Project are trying to get the best of both worlds with as little risk and as much benefit as possible.  Eventually, their current model is going to screw them over if they aren't willing to settle for a lower margin on the h-material, just from a pragmatic perspective.  If you sell three hundred h-versions but one thousand use the pirate patch who would have been willing to pay if the price was a bit lower... well, you can see who loses out, right?  To be honest, it sometimes amazes me how much Dovac resembles that corrupt pharma bastard Shrkeli in tone and action.  There isn't a whole lot to squeeze out of the VN market at this point, and if you go too far, about two-thirds of the normally-paying community will be perfectly willing to pirate your content if they think it is too highly priced (this is ignoring the people who pirate regardless, as their opinions really don't matter).
As a practical matter, the VN community and industry has always been an interlinked seesaw that swings back between surges of piracy and purchases.  This is because a lot of the people in the VN community don't have a ton of liquid assets in the first place, beyond what they need to stay alive and with a roof over their heads.  If you price the VNs too high for the amount of content, the community pirates like crazy.  If you price it too low, you don't make a profit.  If he has a working brain, Dovac will eventually have to strike a balance between overt profit-mongering and sales...  to be honest, his singular talent for alienating the community is pretty amusing from where I stand.
As another practical matter, nukige-lovers started the VN localization industry, for all intents and purposes.  Their insane obsessions resulted in the birth of the first VN-localization companies, and they still remain either the largest minority or the majority, depending on whom you ask.  Avoiding h-content when you are trying to sell localized VNs in the West is fairly stupid, because you alienate the most solid, obsessed, and wealthy part of the fanbase... a fact that is what led to them releasing those overpriced h-versions in the first place, lol.  I can see the logic behind what Dovac did, but the man is an idiot when it comes to PR.  The way he speaks on Twitter is like saying to the world that the whole reason he is doing it is to squeeze more green paper juice out of the community and marginalize the h-addicts.
Edit: To put it a bit more simply... all-ages titles are more likely to draw in the new crowd, but h-content is needed to satisfy the older, more wealthy and reliable crowd.  Dovac is trying to squeeze the more reliable crowd, but he is doing it in a way that is way too blatant and stupid.  Not a scrap of the subtle, manipulative marketer in that man...  he probably is gambling that he won't alienate enough of the solid base with his strategy to lose a large percentage of their purchasing power outright.  Unfortunately, the moron seems to be incapable of figuring his own loose tongue into the equation.
Once again, Dovac is an idiot.
Edit2: The best thing a company president can do in this kind of case is sit back and SAY NOTHING.  Don't reply, don't throw insults, don't make reasoned arguments.
Just shut up and let the community fight it out amongst themselves.  There are enough people here willing to justify his case without having him throw a nuke into the ring.

There's no way the 18+ version of a game like KaraKara is sold for $10, none of the major VN companies would ever do that. Instead of making every version of the game cost the same, SP decided to give a cheaper option for people who want less content.
EA sells games for the standard $60 and then sells DLC on top of that, that's a different story.

What she says is にやにや which is a Japanese onomatopoeia for grinning (that she actually says aloud).
English doesn't have that, obviously, so we went for smth like *grin grin*; grinnity is just something phonetical to make it read better (we're not the only ppl in the planet who figured that out).
The Miley Cyrus reference had a Japanese idol that was infamous for revealing clothes that no English speaker would've ever known, so I just tled her name to something familiar to English speakers that should conjure the same image. Besides, I think it's either Raziel or Lilith who says that, and neither are Japanese, or teens for that matter.
Yummers is something you say after tasting something tasty.
    ----
I think people recommended you searching the English words you didn't understand in google (not using google translate), since slang is not usually recorded in normal dictionaries. Tokyo Babel is full of Japanese slang, pop culture references, and memes — we only tried to convey them as best as possible in English. We didn't add anything that wasn't already there. If the game we're tling doesn't contain such things, then our translation doesn't contain them either. An English speaker should have an almost exact same experience with our version of TB as a Japanese speaker would have with the original (in a few instances I'd go as far as to say the English version reads better as Higashide is not exactly known as a master of prose himself). Anyway, it's not a watered down version like most fan-translations unfortunately are.
I've been speaking Japanese for thirteen years now, and lived in Japan for almost seven of them, during which I got bachelor's and master's degrees in biology from one of the most demanding universities in the country studying everything exclusively in Japanese. If I could pass quantum mechanics class in Japanese, I'm sure I could handle Tokyo Babel. xD

KuroganeHomura reacted to Nosebleed in Some Useful Tools to Help Read Manga/Books in Japanese
So we all know there's multiple ways to help us read Japanese VNs by now. All Japanese VNs have text you can grab and display, which makes them an easy target for practicing reading. There's one downside though, visual novels are typically incredibly long, especially if you are a beginner (yes, even the shorter ones can take a while to read if you're inexperienced). I always thought this downside affected lots of people that wanted to practice reading but didn't have the time/energy to read through an entire VN in Japanese to start with.
However, other mediums like manga and LNs are much more difficult due to requiring you to either constantly look at a dictionary or just know all those kanji from memory (with the exception of manga that have furigana, but those are usually aimed at younger audiences and might not be the most interesting). It felt unfair that such fun media couldn't be used as easily to study Japanese.
Well luckily yesterday I was talking to a friend on discord and fanboying over the Monogatari Series with them and they ended up showing me a few tools they used to read LNs, and after that I myself looked up for ways to read manga in Japanese, and thus we come to this thread in which I'm hoping to share something useful with those of you who wish to read these mediums as a way to practice Japanese.
Note: If you know any other/better software, please by all means share it!
    Kanjitomo
Kanjitomo is an incredibly useful software to read manga on your computer. It detects kanji/words by simply hovering over them with your mouse. But not only that, it gives you the reading/meaning of those words/kanji. And lastly, if it fails to show the correct kanji, it shows you a list with similar looking kanji for you to browse, it also lets you edit the individual kanji contained in the word in case it guessed the 2nd or 3rd characters wrong, thus always letting you pick which is the right one.
    Some screenshots:

    Advantages:
Easy word lookup Very customizeable Let's you actually import images and scroll through multiple images in a single folder. Also supports Chinese Disadvantages
Can get laggy sometimes (mostly on startup) The zoom feature can get somewhat annoying to control Although it lets you import files, I found the file viewer annoying to use and prefer to just use some other software to open the images Download (requires Java to be installed): http://kanjitomo.net/
    JGloss
This software is primarily geared towards books. What it does is it lets you import .txt files (or copy text) and open them in the reader. After that it places furigana on top of all the words, and also creates a glossary of words on the right for you to look up if you need. One feature I really appreciated in it was that it only displays furigana for the first instance of a word only, forcing you to memorize the word after that (although if you want to, you can select the word and it'll look it up for you regardless).
Now you might be thinking, doesn't Translation Aggregator also do something similar? While TA does indeed have these same functions, TA is mostly practical for smaller chunks of text, not whole sections of a book.
    Screenshots:

    With translation enabled:

    Advantages:
Easy way to read large chunks of text with furigana Can use different parsers. Can also place the English translation underneath the words if needed Creates a glossary of words for an easy lookup Pretty costumizeable interface (you can change the font/size/colors/etc.) Also works with German Disadvantages:
Requires you to copy the text or have a text file of the book you're reading, which doesn't always happen. Parsing is not perfect and you may find some weird results at times (but that's the same for any Japanese parser). It seems to have a certain limit of text it can display (I kept running into an error when I imported a lot of text), so you may not be able to import whole books but instead have to copy multiple chunks (they're pretty big chunks though) Download: http://jgloss.sourceforge.net/
    Yomichan
Yomichan is an Anki add-on that lets you read text and look up words while simultaneously being able to create an anki deck for the words you want. This tool is incredibly useful if you want to study and read a book at the same time.
    Screenshot:

    Advantages:
Lets you read entire books at once (you can also copy the text) Very easy to create an anki deck with the words from the text Disadvantages
No furigana on the text itself  Requires you to have the book in a .txt file More useful for studying than actually reading Download (requires anki to be installed): https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/934748696
    Capture2Text
Capture2Text is a simple but intuitive OCR (Optic Character Recognition) program that lets you select a part of your screen to convert into text. It's useful to grab whole sentences from a specific bubble of text or a sentence from a book and automatically copy them to your clipboard, which you can then use to do whatever. If you're a translator, it makes the script writing process much easier since you don't have to manually input everything.
(I don't really have any screenshots since all the software does is grab and copy text.)
    Advantages:
Easy way to grab text from an image and paste it onto your clipboard (or someplace else) Works well in conjunction with other software like TA. Disatvantages:
The recognition can fail pretty hard depending on the font used (you can easily end up with scrambled jibberish) Download: http://capture2text.sourceforge.net/

I know it's not groundbreaking and it might not even be as appealing as just grabbing text in a VN, but I find manga and LNs very fun and less tiresome to read and so these tools come in really handy for that purpose.
Think of it this way, do you want to start practicing Japanese by reading an entire visual novel with more than a thousand lines from the get go, or would something smaller like a 20 page manga chapter be a little easier for starters? Of course, this doesn't mean you shouldn't try to read visual novels, they're great practice, but I think a lot of people lose themselves when starting off with them and perhaps these tools will help keep the focus on studying and memorizing things a bit more instead of just reading.
