mjriedstra got a reaction from The Striker in Rewrite Discussion Thread
In my opinion, Rewrite is a top-10 VN out of those that have been translated. The gameplay elements are mediocre, but the plot, characters, and fun "mysterious animal" mini-stories are well worth the time. The production values are also very high, beyond the level of most other KEY VNs, mainly because it is newer and more polished than the ones they are more famous for (Clannad, Kanon, Air, etc.).
It also has a more of a modern anime art style than the classic KEY style, which is a plus to me.

A Visual Novel set in Space. Fulfill your duty. Fall in love. Betray your friends. Get murdered by an A.I.

    Welcome aboard the Everett.

    OVERVIEW
Quantum Suicide by Cotton Candy Cyanide is inspired by story-driven Japanese Visual Novels such as Danganronpa, and the Virtues Last Reward series.

In Quantum Suicide, you play as a researcher aboard a spaceship on an epic mission to find humanity a new home. You have the ability to choose your name and gender, a choice that can change your destiny from the very beginning. Quantum Suicide contains 6 courtable options (3 females, 3 males). With their own hopes, desires, personalities, and sexual preferences, you will have to move carefully to earn each character's affections. Each courtable character has at least three posed sprites, each with multiple facial expressions. In addition, all characters are partially voiced by professional Japanese voice actors.

Boasting over 50+ hours of gameplay, you must navigate your way through over 30 different endings, including bad, good, and true endings for all courtable options. Each week, you are thrown into The Deletion Game where you must battle for your survival through a series of puzzles and strategy mini-games as you attempt to see the Everett's mission through to the end...alive.
Quantum Suicide is a commercial game scheduled for sale on Steam late 2017.

    STORY
The year is now 2117. You are a second generation ship-born researcher studying inter-dimensional travel. Your choices change the fortunes of all aboard the Everett. Friendship and love lay waiting at your feet, but you should be wary. The road to the stars is full of hardship.

A malprogrammed A.I. dedicated to preserving resources pulls you into a twisted, murderous game. When tensions are high, who knows what even the kindest crew member will do?
How will you protect those you love? Will you betray friends to save yourself? Will you be slaughtered in cold, empty space? Will you slaughter?

It's time to ask yourself: what would you do to survive?

    CHARACTER ART
Quantum Suicide's lead artist is Ygor Lisboa aka Danzzila. We were drawn to him for his wonderful, expressive Japanese style and he is responsible for our character design, sprites, and CG art.
Each main character has three poses, with three expressions per pose. Supporting characters currently only have one pose, with multiple expressions.

    BACKGROUND ART
Ah, background art. You are hardly given the credit you deserve but as soon as you are lacking, it becomes apparent. The interior of the Everett was designed with a sparse, military practicality in mind, but we also wanted it to be atmospheric and vivid enough to be visually interesting for the player. To get the best art, you have to go to the best artist so we went to background extraordinaire, Owen Carson.

The scenes capture the beauty of the ship, the wonder of space, and the eerieness of a closed circuit situation. With at least 20 variations for the background to date (with plans for a few extra for the few game), the Everett will come alive, even if you don't stay that way!

    GRAPHIC USER INTERFACE
Our Game User Interface (GUI) is designed to be intuitive, and add to the overall science fiction tone of the game. Further screens such as CG Gallery, Music Player, Mini-Games, Archive Files, and Bonus Content are to be added as the game is created.
The Quantum Suicide Logo and the GUI were designed by the talented Luna Chai Li.

    MUSIC
What would intergenerational space travel be without a great soundtrack? Quiet. No one wants quiet. Quiet is scary, and cold, and sad. To ensure that your travels among the stars is not a quiet affair, we've had a soundtrack lovingly crafted by our talented musicians. We've been lucky enough to be given permission to use the song 変異個体-ГЕNЕ- by SEVERUS WAND for our atmospheric trailer currently in production but we also have a complete Original Soundtrack by Wojciech Wojnowski.

    ABOUT US
Cotton Candy Cyanide (CCCN-) is made up of two people: Ashley Pearson (Nyx) and Tina Richards (MoltenCherry). We often go by our gamer tags.

We created CCCN- to create games that we, ourselves, wanted to play. Both of us greatly enjoy games such as Dangan Ronpa, Virtue's Last Reward, and Persona; games that challenge us, make us fall in love with characters, and then break our hearts. Unfortunately, we found these sorts of titles scarce in the Western gaming market. While Steam has been exploding with visual novels recently, we wanted to create something a little darker than a slice of life, romantic novel. We've got 'Cyanide' in our name for a reason.

WHY ARE WE POSTING ON FUWANOVEL
There are a multitude of reasons that we are posting on the Fuwanovel Forums.

Firstly, we are hoping that by posting here we might gain some support from people as passionate about Visual Novels as we are. As many of you know, creating a game isn't always rainbows and butterflies. We find it really comforting to know that we have a community behind us.

Secondly, we've put a lot of money, and time, and love into Quantum Suicide. This is our first project and we are trying our very hardest to make Quantum Suicide the highest quality product possible. Now that we are approaching the end of our initial 'concept' phase, we are simply bursting at the seams with excitement to share our project with you!  If you are interested, it would truly mean the world to us if you would back us on Kickstarter or upvote us on Steam Greenlight.

And finally, if you would like to stay up to date with the progress of Quantum Suicide, please follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

    Greetings from Novel Tea Games!

We've been working hard on our Visual Novel and we're very close to finishing our demo. I assure you that you won't be disappointed!
While we wish to be as transparent as possible and share as much as we can, we also believe in saving some of the content for a surprise when the demo launches so please forgive me if at any point I seem a little vague about certain story details.

    View our trailer!

    Now on Steam Greenlight!
    What's it about!?
Runeous is a Fantasy Adventure with 'Steampunk' elements. The story follows a small group of heroes in a world ravished by the wars of its past.
Runestones possessing magical qualities are what fuel the industry, their secrets long ago lost.  Humans research them to unlock their hidden potential.  Overpopulation in cities built for far fewer inhabitants. Homes built atop homes with giant walkways connecting the various levels together.    While there is a whole ton of lore that's been written up for the world, we're waiting until the Demo before releasing it as we wish to make it as presentable as possible for you! (I may be willing to give a sneak peek to individuals who can offer genuine feedback and suggestions)       What do we have thus far? Well, we're almost done with the demo! There are just a few elements left to add. - In the interests of transparency, we have had a lot of trouble with music. This is an issue that has been addressed with the addition of a new team member! - 90% of artwork is done and that includes the majority of the 'main' assets. All we have left to do is a few more CGs, NPCs and promotional art!   As for the writing we're miles ahead! From lore and main plot points to full episodes written!       Meet our team! While I would absolutely love to wait until our staff 'Chibi' images are ready, unfortunately we've just not had enough spare time to get them done with the development going on, therefore I'm just going to have to throw some unattractive links at you!   Earl Grey - That's me! I'm the project manager, Community manager and Marketing. I wrote the initial story line and lore, however our writer has taken over writing the Episodes!   Chamomile - She's our Lead Character Artist! She also works a lot on promotional items and tidbits!   Chai - She's our Lead Background Artist. She also collaborates with Chamo on CGs!   Jasneymon - Or 'Jas' for short. She's our 'Support' Artist. Working on things like Objects, items or Chibis for the website.   Vanilla - She's our Web Designer! You probably can't tell right now, but a lot of work is going on behind the scenes which will improve the site a bunch   Kagoshima - He's another amazing artist, however he's working on something 'Top Secret' right now so unfortunately we can't show you any of his content right now   Peppermint - Our latest addition. Peppermint is working on Music! Unfortunately I don't have a link to share with you at the moment.   So there we have it. That's our small, yet amazingly wonderful team! ^^       If you would like to find out more about our project, please check out our Website You can now also support us on Patreon! We post monthly Blogs!   Thanks for reading! Please do let me know what your thoughts are on our projects! Also please consider taking part in our community forum where you can talk, interact and ask questions with the rest of our team! Mail us any time: [email protected]     02 Sept 2015 NPC Update No character is too small or insignificant to us, especially the small insignificant ones We've finished all but one of the 'NPCs' so everyone who speaks within the demo has a face!   We've also made some progress on music. While we're not ready to share it with the public just yet, we do have a small 'sample' of the music quality you might expect: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bylf1W-RKQ-mZmxGcDRMUUp4TW8/view     05 Sept 2015 Update: Narrator Portraits Since even the NPCs are featured in our VN, it's only fair that our wonderful Narrators be see too. Today we introduce our Narrator Portraits!         18 October 2015 Update: Free Game! We have decided to release Runeous as a Free Game! Check out out blog to learn more and how you can help to support us!

Yeah, having a team of people can be tough, trying to get everyone organised and keep them all motivated for a start!
Have you finished your project? Was it a visual novel?
I decided to concentrate on visual novels as I was a romance writer for some time and, though I loved it, I also enjoyed art very much. One of my dreams when I was younger was being a comic artist, but that wasn't possible. When I stumbled across visual novels, it was everything I had been looking for: art, game, story, characters- everything! I know it will be a tough path as it's a niche market, and otome is an even smaller market in that tiny one already, but I am very, very lucky to be in a position where I can pursue a career in this. And I am going to give it my all to make it work, I love it too much to let myself fail!

I see. It's useful to have those other opinions on a solo project so that you don't end up with blinders. The great part about solo design though is having full agency over the project. On my own project I originally intended to do almost everything myself, but it turned out to be way too much, so a lot of work has been contracted out. It takes some of the direct burden off, but also results in a lot of time and effort spent on coordinating everyone's activities.
The scale of your project seems large enough that I would have thought it would be quite difficult to do solo. I suppose it's because you're doing it as a full-time job. How did you decide to make that commitment?

I'll be playing it when I have the time. The first game was one of the few I've read where almost nothing happened the way I expected. Of course, that's part and parcel with how dark and disturbing the game was, so no doubt it'll take a few weeks of staring straight ahead and chanting or watching something like Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka? to get over it afterward, but it will be worth it.
    Hopefully.

The choice structure sounds very interesting. You're right that the majority of games have clear options for "good" or "bad" choices and that the duality of the choice structure doesn't suit reality.
A good counter-example is Fate Stay/night, which I still consider one of the best VNs ever made primarily for the number of choices and how truly different the various outcomes are that can be attained. There are very few (if any) outcomes that are purely "good" or "bad" and many choices in the game lead directly to sacrificing something in order to gain something else.
If you are able to create a choice structure anywhere near that level, it will certainly be a noteworthy achievement. Best of luck with it.

mjriedstra got a reaction from Nightmare799 in So any good WW2/modern age military anime out there?
It's a shame you don't want giant robots. A ton of terrific anime are about modern age mech warfare. I thought for about ten minutes trying to find something militaristic that doesn't have space travel, robots or airplanes and came up with almost nothing besides Valkyria Chronicles. Unless you're willing to stretch the definition of "military" pretty far to find something like Phantom of Inferno or Black Lagoon, or take an alternate timeline like Attack on Titan ... or GATE, which is half modern military, half fantasy.

I took the stats straight from Ren'py, so I'm assuming it is picking up on every menu/choice in the game
It is a high amount, but this game is heavily based on choice and the player having the freedom to play as they want. Though the main character is not exactly a blank slate-type character, the player will still have a lot of influence on how she behaves- in both personality and ruler decisions.
Though, not everyone will see all of those choices in one runthrough. A lot will be based on what paths they take, as there are choices within choices.
    For example-
You might have a choice of who to talk to which leads to options 1, 2, 3, 4. Talking to your chosen person will then lead to new choices being opened.
Choice 1 would open up to choice 1a, 1b, or 1c, choices you wouldn't see if you chose to talk to person 2.
I have tried to structure this game so as it feels more like you're actually a character in a story, rather than just clicking options in a game. When talking to other characters, each conversation choice won't just give you a different line or two of dialogue, but quite a new bit of information on that character or the situation you've asked them about- as with a real conversation. I'm hoping this means if people want to replay the game, then it won't feel static, and things will still be fresh.
It's not all dialogue choices though. The options on how to deal with events and handle situations play a big role, and the characters will judge and react on the way you respond to those types of things.
One of the main points of this game was that there's no real good or bad decisions, just different ones. No 'click the top option for good, click the bottom option for the naughty' choices. There are different ways of handling things but, as in real life, not everything is a matter of black and white. Some ways of handling things are just different than others. I'm really hoping this takes away from the feel I have in some games that I must play a certain way to get the best outcomes, meaning people are open to play the character they really want to and will get varying outcomes based on that. I hope that makes sense
Also, some choices or questions may seem irrelevant, but some may lead to other options being unlocked later, or special things happening, eg. that random maid you helped out may just reveal some snippet of info that helps in your quest to gain alliances later.
Some of the choices are in there just for fun, but most have a purpose, either by giving a choice on how to handle things, or even just learning more about the characters and lore of the world to deepen your understanding of how things work.
But, don't worry, I've written it so that the choices aren't popping up in your face every two seconds I've hopefully spaced them out to make sure the flow of the game is steady and the player can immerse themselves in the story as much as possible.
((Wow, sorry, you probably weren't looking for that essay of an answer to your question! But thank you so much for commenting It's nice to explain more about the gameplay mechanics that will feature in this.))

I don't think you need to tone the freckles down if you like them. You added them for a reason, and they certainly do lend the character an element you don't often see in VNs. There are real people with freckles just like that. There's one in the office just down the hall from mine, in fact.

Interesting concept. Dealing frankly and effectively with depression, apathy and fear of loss is something that many stories attempt, while few succeed. If it's done well here, it could be a great read.

I'm having a little trouble reconciling the dark tone of the synopsis with how lighthearted the concept title screen is. Of course, a "concept" is just that, but it may be worth your while to take whichever representation more accurately represents the true tone of the story (the text or the visual) and align the other to it more closely. That should help ensure that any volunteer writers know what they're getting into and what you'll be expecting from them.

Good luck. Looking forward to how this turns out.

I think the bones of this issue lie in your personal definition of "escapism."

Healthy escapism, in my opinion, is when you dive into fantasy to get away from troubling aspects of your life that you cannot control or change. It's perfectly reasonable to distract yourself from those issues by doing something that helps you forget.

Unhealthy escapism is when you are hiding from something that you really must deal with. Generally speaking, the longer you avoid handling these types of issues, the worse they get, so not only are you postponing the inevitable, it's likely that you are making your own future more difficult for the illusion of a simpler present.

If I was doing something that I loved, but it was making my situation worse, that would be a strong implication that the problem I was avoiding was that second kind of problem. Therefore, I shouldn't be avoiding it. Of course, knowing what you should do and being able to force yourself to do it are two different things. But if there's something you're running from and you know that running will hurt you, try to stop running.
