Alright, finished Kikokugai, and man, I loved it. The setting was really cool, the writing was fantastic, and the art in the remake is just...
This made me want to check out more Nitroplus titles, specifically Tokyo Necro. Looked up some CGs from it, and oh boy, it looks great. So yeah, the moment I finish one game on my backlog, I add another. RIP
If my backlog kills me, I will blame you @Zenophilious (/ω\)

Started playing my first TLed VN in like, over a year, (Kikokugai) thanks to @Zenophilious bugging me about it until I finally caved. (/ω\)
Played a couple of hours so far, and man, I'm loving this. Might end up just reading it all today. We'll see.

EDIT: Due to Fuwa anti-piracy rules this thread's usefulness was quite limited, since we couldn't ask for any files that we needed for further compatibility testing and the like. I'd say even posting direct links to our patch here was questionable to begin with, since it's not that different from the abovementioned files that we were asking for.
So in the end we decided to remove all links from here and move our main release thread to Reddit: LINK
That's where all further updates will be posted, so make sure to follow us there. I'll ask mods to lock this thread, since MeruP won't be checking it anyway, so all feedback should be posted on Reddit instead (we also have a dedicated thread for reporting bugs and other issues).

Zenophilious reacted to Dergonu in What is wrong with reading a bad translation?
1: I mean, you will be losing out on the original intent of the writer, and great aspects of the work. This is pretty self explanitory, really.
2: A great translation is both accurate, and reads nice and fluently in the language it was translated into. When you're reading a good translation, you should feel like what you're reading could just as well have been written natively in the language it was translated into. You should not "feel" the source language lingering in the line. (Something you will see lots of when the translation is very literal.)
3: In terms of textual accuracy, it becomes impossible for people without Japanese knowledge to know when a translation is bad. You can't gauge the accuracy of a translation if you don't understand the source material, after all. In cases where there are big issues with accuracy, (like If my heart had wings,) you'll generally see a big outrage on any kind of VN related forum/ website, so just scanning Fuwanovel or similar sites will be enough to find out if TLs are "bad" in that regard.
As for translations that are technically accurate, but are just bad in terms of English writing/ have incredibly literal translations that create a hot mess of crap, (Libra,) you should be able to tell yourself, really.
Like, just read some of these examples from Libra. It should be fairly obvious that this is a bad translation. Example 1, example 2, example 3.

I'll be amazed if it sells decently.  It may seem moe-ish at the start, but it's nothing like a normal moege.  If anything, I think the story will ultimately piss off most of MoeNovel's demographic, and if you factor in the dated art, it'll have a pretty hard uphill climb unless they cut the price really fast.
I don't know why people think kamige sell well on Steam.  They don't really seem to do all that well, and the userbase generally won't be receptive to them because they've never heard of them before.  If you aren't active in the VN community, impressive names like Kajiri Kamui Kagura, Evolimit and Muramasa mean nothing to you, and won't encourage you to ignore the "larger than normal" price tag (aka more than $20).
If you told me back in 2013 that Nekopara was going to sell hundreds of thousands of copies and that Grisaia was going to go relatively mainstream, I think I would've asked if you were tripping or something lol
The same sort of problems happen in the gaming community, though.  EA pulls one anti-consumer move after another, and people just keep buying their games and rewarding their actions.  The average person doesn't really seem to care all that much about consumer-friendly business practices or the overall quality of the products they purchase, unfortunately.  You have to go above and beyond in order to piss people off enough to make them launch an effective boycott nowadays.

MiaZora was fairly good, from what I hear, but yeah, the LoveKami spinoffs were uninspired Sakura Spirit knockoffs, so complete garbage.
I wouldn't expect that to happen anytime soon.  They contract out to translation firms for TLs, so unless they actually hire permanent translation staff or attract some decent freelancers, there won't be an improvement in quality, and there's no reason for them to care, honestly.  The people that buy MoeNovel's games don't seem to be aware or even care all that much about the TL quality of the Japanese games they buy, so why should they put any effort into improving their TL quality?
They probably need to be forced into an adapt-or-die situation to see the error of their ways, but I just can't see that happening anytime soon, unfortunately.  They have a pretty decent-sized following that will buy whatever they put out, and the average Steam user only seems to care about price and art quality, not readability or good prose.

    He will be remembered.
I like to think that he himself considered that he lived a good life, as it's well known his optimism and way of thinking.
It's always sad to say goodbye, but in the end we must accept that is the fate we all share. He has become now one of those undying stars that will inspire the future generations. It was his books that made me interested in physics in the first place. So thank you and good night, Mr Hawking, have a good sleep.

I've heard about the same studies.  I personally find the opposite is true in my case, but I don't pretend to think I'm all that similar to the average consumer of media.
I'd argue that it doesn't really indicate that they did any careful thinking at all, since it's textbook marketing to spoil things to generate interest.  Look at Batman vs Superman trailer, for example, or this trailer for The Shape of Water.  The latter basically summarizes most of the plot points of the movie, leaving only the inevitable confrontation between the protagonist and antagonist and the actual ending itself unspoiled.  This is now considered the norm, unfortunately, at least for movie trailers.
That's pretty fair, but I still think that it fundamentally cheapens the experience.  You're supposed to be confused and not quite sure what's happening when you're reading, and the spoiler MoeNovel used to market it has you going in with basic knowledge of the first twist.  Some of my favorite parts of CC were when I was completely clueless as to what was going on, like
    for example.
I'll concede that spoiling that twist was probably necessary to get average people on Steam to pay any attention to CC at all, but it just doesn't sit well with me.  I fully expect it to flop, so the chance that it will be for nothing is even more frustrating.
A pretty good rule of thumb for good spoiler-free descriptions is to only use the basic premise combined with a minor hook, and to not delve much further into the story.  What they did is spoil something that is only discovered after approximately a handful of hours (depending on reading speed) in a game that they themselves describe as being "over 20 hours".  Mentioning that the entire town is now devoid of human life is integral to the setup of the story, and is fine, at least in my opinion.  Those tags
Not really too sure if the JP descriptions spoil the same twist.  There's several JP web pages still up, which are for the PSP version, PS3/PS Vita version, the Final Complete version.  The original site for the first Windows release loads a blank page with a blue bar at the top (in fact, FlyingShine's entire site does this), and the other sites for the Xbox 360 and PSP releases just redirect to some weird Japanese iPhone repair site.
I have no idea what they say and can't Google Translate them, since the JP characters are displayed through an embedded image instead of normal text.  If someone else that knows JP wants to go through them and see if they spoil the same twist MoeNovel did, feel free.
EDIT: I forgot, the working PSP site actually has text.  Here's what Google spit out:

I sincerely doubt it.  I read ixrec's TL, and the game will make even less sense than it already did (thanks to ixrec, obviously) if certain h-scenes are removed.  The MC is also a huge pervert that is obsessed with his porn stash, and repeatedly talks about doing the five knuckle shuffle, so I don't have much faith that that part of his personality will remain entirely intact.
Of course, MoeNovel spoils part of the plot in the description.  What a bunch of morons.
EDIT: Don't look at the tags either, they have spoilers in them as well.

Well...I already gave up on CC ever getting a good translation, so I guess nothing's really changed.  Yet another reason to learn JP, I guess.
What I find particularly distressing is that MoeNovel is trying to branch out from moege and charage into plotge.  Ignoring the whole "censorship" issue (I'm sure we all know everyone's stances on that by now), I don't trust that they'll consistently contract out to translators that are competent enough to handle VNs like CC.  Their track record hasn't improved nearly enough for pretty much anyone to expect that of them, since they don't even seem to be able to consistently put out decent translations for moege.
I also don't like the precedent of licensing a non-Pulltop game.  I'm aware that WillPlus owns Pulltop, and therefore MoeNovel, but so far they've only ruined Pulltop games.  If MoeNovel has access to the catalogues of every WillPlus imprint, things could get bad.

Zenophilious got a reaction from Dreamysyu in MoeNovel's next title - Cross Channel
It technically is, even though they don't own FlyingShine.  They made an imprint called Cross†Channel specifically to rerelease CC on PC.  WillPlus, through the CC imprint, has rereleased the game twice now, once as a physical reprint, and again as the physical Final Complete edition, which ports the console-exclusive content back to the 18+ version and adds a bit of original content.
Hopefully MG already secured it, otherwise we might be screwed
