granit got a reaction from Dreamysyu in How do you think will be the future VNs?
I don't know what the future holds for VNs, but I would like to see more emphasis on visual storytelling, because I see a lot of potential in that area. Muv-Luv Alternative and Mahoutsukai no Yoru comes to my mind, where they used lots of CGs and effects to add more immersion to the scenes. Most VNs just use static character sprites and then CGs in key moments (and ero scenes).

Well, I've reread G-senjou no Maou a couple of times when I was translating it to Hungarian. Other than that, I've read the common route of Grisaia twice, and to practice my Japanese, I've reread Hoshizora no Memoria without the English patch too.

    Hi o/
I did a little analysis on changing trends in Visual Novels using the voting data on vndb if anyone is interested. I put up the first part of the series here:
    https://bunnyadvocate.tumblr.com/post/159429107647/visual-novels-the-rise-of-a-medium
This is part of a whole series of posts, with my next post looking at protags, and what kinds of traits different types of protags are associating with according to an analysis of the tag distribution on vndb.
If you guys have any questions or comments about it, then I'd love to chat about it.

Well, to each his own i guess.
I actually liked grisaia, it may not be the best thing out there but it was fun to read.
Best part of the first game was the common route indeed. If you find it boring, just drop it, it won't be worth your time.
The second game was pretty interresting, most likely my favorite "serious" part of the trilogy.
The third game was a dissapointment though.. They wasted too much time preparing for the final (which was "cool" but bullsh.t story wise if you ask me ).

PS : Michiru made the game anyways, even if her route was meh

I still believe that the common route is the best part of Grisaia, across the entire trilogy. It's like a comedy sketch anime in a visual novel form, and it also perfectly captures what the story is about in the first place - a group of quirky outcasts trying to lead a normal life. That's what Grisaia is first and foremost, and as such its main focus are the characters and their interactions with one another - in other words, the comedy.
The whole series went downhill as soon as it tried to have a serious plot, in my opinion. Even ignoring the mess that all the different writers made, it just loses most of its charm as soon as it tried to have a constant narrative, and the third entry in the series just ends up being a trainwreck that comes across more like a Hollywood parody than an epic conclusion.

So after re-watching the End of Evangelion movie, I was wondering if there are some good psychological/mindfucky VNs that have a similar feeling or style. (It doesn't matter if it's translated or not.)
    Thank you in advance.

I see. As for that, there's some content that was not adapted in the anime, so you might try to give a shot there if you interested. As for the worth, it's up to you to find out about that.

999 and VLR will be released shortly on Steam in a single package called "The Nonary games". I'm always surprised that Uchikoshi doesn't get here on Fuwa the credit he deserves, only a handful of people have played his games. Still, not your typical novels.
I feel the closest to Zero Escape (slightly to Evangelion) is the manga 20th Century Boys. Sans time travel (or did it have it?), but with psychic powers.
Evangelion is a one of a kind work. It has a very unique feel, because it's a very unique mix of things, all done with quality and seriousness. Sadly when I played Girlfriend of Steel, it focused on the goofy aspects of the show (Shinji finally gets a girlfriend, etc...).
Also a dark novel is Euphoria, but if has lots of torture and shocking H scenes.
The modern-day Evangelion could very well be Puella Magi Madoka Magica (you probably have checked that). It starts slower than Evangelion but the twists hit hard. It's epicness.
Uchikoshi, Urasawa and Urobuchi (the U-team) are all very good creators.

Laye to the party here, but perhaps you could try I/O there. Or maybe you could try Pygmalion there (Had some elements which remind me of ie almost aimilar with Madoka). Oh, Higurashi and Umineko as well there (You could use graphic patch if you dislike old graphic from both of those VNs). Hope it'll be help, and have fun.

Great, because the first two that come to my mind aren't translated. If you are looking for a great mindfucky story, then I think Sayonara wo Oshiete is the go-to VN to read. I even have a spoiler-free blog post here talking about the VN. After you have read that, I would recommend Subarashiki Hibi. This VN also has really good Mind-fuckery, but is a bit slow to get started and drags on in certain parts. But in general, it is a great VN.
There is actually one other really good mind-fucking VN, but you have to wait until the last chapter to really get to that part. The whole VN is really interesting and nice to read so don't worry. I am talking about Symphonic Rain. Specifically the AL Fine portion. Another pro about Symphonic Rain is that unlike the other two titles I mentioned earlier, this one is translated.

For the psychological aspect, you can also consider Virtue's Last Reward which deals with trust and betrayal (and has incredible sci-fi to boot). The thing is, it has a predecessor called 999 you've gotta play before VLR.

I'm going to pretend to apologize for this in advance.
You'd think Azuki and Coconut would like that, though ...

No, not really.  Translation is more expensive than most people think.  Japanese-to-XYZ commonly costs several cents per character.  They're offering six translations for $100K, but you also have to remember that rewards and Kickstarter's cut eat into that hundred grand before it goes to pay any translators.  They also have a significantly more complicated job mastering and testing the blu-ray itself - after all, you don't want the Korean subs to be timed poorly, or to crash on people's players like His and Her Circumstances did - and I have no idea how much that costs.
So it's probably true that a hundred grand is probably not Sekai's cost to add these subtitles, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was much closer than you think.  And I don't really have a problem with that; it is a stretch goal.  People are getting the OVA at a discount.
Incidentally, this is why so few games get released in English compared to the Japanese release.  The cost of a good translation is actually fairly significant, and when the average sales are taken into account, the money often just isn't there.
