  1. I don't know what the future holds for VNs, but I would like to see more emphasis on visual storytelling, because I see a lot of potential in that area. Muv-Luv Alternative and Mahoutsukai no Yoru comes to my mind, where they used lots of CGs and effects to add more immersion to the scenes. Most VNs just use static character sprites and then CGs in key moments (and ero scenes).

+ bunch of other tweets about how they are fixing """"fake"""" votes even though those user votes have actually nothing to do with the real awards because users can only vote for monthly awards that exist for no purpose

    Interesting. Thanks!

Honestly not sure why people care about these awards when it has been pretty much exposed that only money matters and big makers such as Yuzusoft, Navel, Smee, Palette have all removed their latest titles from the site.

Really? That's interesting. Where did you hear that?

To be honest, I wrote this point just several minutes after I finished that route, and maybe I overreacted a bit there. Anyway, it's not like it was entirely Himawari's point that I started to think about dropping VNs. It's more like, finding good VNs to read became a bit too difficult recently, and I'm not sure at what point it becomes just not worth it anymore. Like when I just started, I could just take a random high-rated VN often mentioned in reviews, and I was almost guarantied to like it, at least to some extend. For some reason, I managed to like VNs for that is good in them and almost completely overlook their flaws. There still were some VNs I didn't really like (mostly, less popular ones), but I always could just drop them at the very beginning and move to something else.

Then, at some point, about a year and a half ago, it just stopped. Suddenly, for almost every VN I played I could say "There were some great moments in it, but ... completely ruins it", or "I liked it overall, but there were some aspects that lowered my overall enjoyment quite a bit". For example, I liked very much how Ever 17 handled mystery, and I had very good time trying to add all things together. On the other hand, I couldn't care less for it's characters, and the final revelation turned out to be so little thought-out, that it dropped my overall mark by 2 points. It all got a bit tiring, and the thought that maybe my time with VNs is coming to its end started to appear in my mind from time to time.

Then for a few months I just didn't have enough free time to read VNs anymore. When I came back, I tried Fata Morgana, and suddenly I was engaged again. And though it wasn't perfect, I managed to overlook it's flaws and get the full enjoyment of the things it does right. The same thing with Pygmalion, though it's actually even more flawed than Fata Morgana (like, 20 times so). Then I tried Himawari, and suddenly I'm where I started. Overall, I can't say I hate it, or this is a bad VN. There are some things it does quite well, and the overall idea is quite good. Just, I cannot connect to the most characters, especially to the protagonist, and the number of plotholes makes it almost impossible to enjoy it to fullest extend. The worst part of it, though, is that I start to compare Himawari to some VNs I read earlier... and I don't see how they are better. It's not a very healthy thought, because it makes me wonder whether those VNs were actually as good as I remember, and maybe my tastes are just changing with time.

Maybe you're right @akaritan and I just need to stay away from VNs for some time.:amane: I'll probably try to get through some works in other media that I wanted to try. Anyway, thanks for your advice!

I'm stalling Himawari for an indefinite amount of time. I'm not dropping it, however. I still want to give it a second try, at some point of time. I had a single precedent when I suddenly started to like a VN long time after finishing it, even though I fully hated it the first time. I am still going to at least finish it, but I won't touch it at least before the middle of this summer.

And I'm sticking to VNs with good protagonists from now on.

Throw all expectations you have out the window, and you won't be so easily disappointed. When you first started it was exciting because you had no expectations and it was all new. (Taking a break helps too. )

Oh, and try to not score VNs. Scoring each of my VNs has made me almost always consciously aware of the good and bad points of a VN as I'm reading it, which means I can't just take it as I see it. Rather, I'm basically analyzing it as I'm reading it, which for me really can ruin the experience.

Not really, lol. The pubic hair is simply considered obscene and that goes back to Meiji period, especially the Pacific War, where goverment seeked to ban and persecute everything western, including porn. Not much had changed since then, with exception that obscene materials in general are considered illegal (yes, you heard it) and people selling or distributing these can be punished by hefty fines or even imprisonment. Modern pornography in general is subject to censorship, which typically involves placing pixelization on the genitals; this partially allevates the problem, hence there's no real reason to remove the pubic hair in adult videos, but it is still deemed as inappropriate in works of art, including manga, anime and games. This is the reason why artists typically avoid drawing pubic hair or do it in a barely visible way. They simply want to avoid controversies and keep a low profile from organisations, such as Nihon Ethics of Video Association and the Ethics Organization of Computer Software. It's not really the censorship, that's the issue though. Much like with many things, it's simply something they got used to and don't feel the need to change.

I've always thought that otakus just simply prefer younger girls to shave their private areas, because milf characters usually have pubic hairs in VNs while school girls rarely do. (And if they do it's usually an option in the settings)

  7. I'm not the best when is comes to reading kanji, but I'm pretty sure that these are all different companies.  The title is company trust information or something like that. The one we need to look at is ラズエル(Lassuel) aka Lass. (https://vndb.org/p357)

1(業種) is type of industry which is ガームソフト開発(game development)

2 is location - somewhere in Tokyo I guess

    3 is capital stock - 3.000.000 yen

    4 is representative(?) - I can't read that^^

    5 is dept - 168,000,000 yen

6 is I think reason/cause - and if I'm not mistaken, that says they are filing for bankruptcy

999 and VLR will be released shortly on Steam in a single package called "The Nonary games". I'm always surprised that Uchikoshi doesn't get here on Fuwa the credit he deserves, only a handful of people have played his games. Still, not your typical novels.

I feel the closest to Zero Escape (slightly to Evangelion) is the manga 20th Century Boys. Sans time travel (or did it have it?), but with psychic powers.

Evangelion is a one of a kind work. It has a very unique feel, because it's a very unique mix of things, all done with quality and seriousness. Sadly when I played Girlfriend of Steel, it focused on the goofy aspects of the show (Shinji finally gets a girlfriend, etc...).

Also a dark novel is Euphoria, but if has lots of torture and shocking H scenes.

The modern-day Evangelion could very well be Puella Magi Madoka Magica (you probably have checked that). It starts slower than Evangelion but the twists hit hard. It's epicness.

Uchikoshi, Urasawa and Urobuchi (the U-team) are all very good creators.

Thank you! I've already read Euphoria and seen Madoca, but I will check out the others you mentioned.

Laye to the party here, but perhaps you could try I/O there. Or maybe you could try Pygmalion there (Had some elements which remind me of ie almost aimilar with Madoka). Oh, Higurashi and Umineko as well there (You could use graphic patch if you dislike old graphic from both of those VNs). Hope it'll be help, and have fun.

    Thanks! I/O looks interesting.

Btw, is Higurashi worth reading after I watched the anime?
