  1. First of all, thanks for all the recommendations! Hmm... I've actually watched kimi ga nozomu, da capo, school days and white album(s) as animes so I'm a little reluctant to re-visit them as partially spoiled, but I'll give 'em a thought anyhow. I'll probably try Crescendo and A profile first, though I must say Crescendo looked kind of off-putting, with that writing style. (could be the translation, I guess, or the screenshots in question.) In third person and present form, simple and purely descriptive narration--- (this happens now, then this happens etc.) Meh.
  2. This request is based on a specific mood or line of thought that hit me recently. I realize that while I've been aware of VNs for years, I still haven't played too many, so there might an army of these games just waiting for me, but here goes... A story where the love triangle is a central part of the main plot, and it needs to have fulfilling arcs, separate endings and aftermaths for all of the characters involved, preferably with a fair share of drama thrown into it all. (I know love triangles are a quite common, but in animes and mangas at least, they tend to have a clearly established 'right' ending that a wizened, cynical reader can recognize all too easily way before reaching the end.) The question that first hit my mind was along the lines of: "When you realize that this person is already a part of someone else's story, would you still keep pushing yourself into their story?" It feels 'wrong', when you first think of it, but you still want to keep struggling and in the end, there's no real, right answer, just one's personal choice. Other specifications: - Can have more central characters than just the love triangle (if done well, of course) - All types of pairings - No genre limitations, though I actually prefer stories with more 'average' settings. - OELVN or VN - Translated or commercialized in the West (I can't read Japanese, you know.) - Available on PC Comments and discussion on love triangles as story element are also welcomed, or rather, I'd enjoy more specific recommendations, rather than just lists of every love triangle game ever.
  3. Since this demo is mostly about what the engine can do, let's discuss some questions from the perspective of storytelling... - While you can examine items and such, it's story's job to make those examinations meaningful. Say, a teddy bear in a normally callous girl's room is pretty self-explanatory, a framed photo on 'her' desk... all manners of items have their own stories, but there's always numerous things to consider, like what kind of information ought to be left as examination-driven and what should be conveyed more directly... And what the protagonist should be able to deduce realistically vs. what kind of information you want to give... - To what degree is the engine able to sense the player's input? For an example, other characters might get funny ideas if you keep examining stuff while they're talking to you, there's limits to what one should examine and so on, so forth. - While 'examined things' are saved as text links, perhaps these can also be used as triggers or different ways to advance the story. i.e. certain actions might only become available after reading some other bit. Collecting text links could also be used as means of learning more about the world, characters, history etc, perhaps similarly to Analogue: a Hate Story. - Of course, animated sequences are a highly expressive way of storytelling, while creating highly expressive characters and explosive situations is one thing, it doesn't need to end there, either. Even stuff like daydreams (or those murderous intentions of your shuraba love triangle maybe?) could be projected into an animation, it's about mixing 'reality' and imagination and blurring the line in between. I'm sure there's stuff I'm missing too, but it's never the less interesting to see this kind of development.
  4. The architecture of Violet Hill was actually influenced by western culture, it's like a special quirk of Aoki's hometown.
  5. It's always neat to see OELVN projects starting up from a smaller scale, even though this one's gone past being a 'fan project' with the (already successful) kickstarter and all. (call me jealous...) The characters seem pretty cute while the story feels sort of minimalist, but perhaps that's all it really needs to be... 'ganbare!' or something like that. (doesn't 'do your best' sound kind of... meh. that much is given, I mean.)
  6. Being somewhat of an amateur scribbler myself, tis was a nice thread, especially the bit about purple elephants, never thought about that. Here's some opinions and stuff: - Setting goals and outlines can sometimes work in reverse. You spend all that time telling yourself, once I'm done with this or that part, that's fine. Now I've just got to put this part here... and in doing so, your writing becomes a chore, just a collection of tiny text blocks... So sometimes, you've got to allow yourself to get lost in what you're writing. Try getting inside your character's head for once... - On music, I generally find that listening to anything with lyrics makes it impossible for me to write anything. So, I'd sometimes try stuff like instrumental jazz, post-rock and even electronic music, but then again, (I don't know how this is for others) the mood and genre of the music has a huge impact on the writing... -Last but not least, It helps if you've got a friend, an editor, or even just a place online where you can get some feedback and help with spinning out new ideas. We're all blind to our own faults, so if you lose your confidence, you'll fail to recognize even the interesting parts and stall the development of your story before it begins. But other people can see things like that more easily, not that their opinions should drive your writing, but it's a ghost-in-the-shell kind of thing, your own mind is your only yardstick so trying to measure something which comes from your mind can be very hard at times.
  7. I really like this one, even after they Each time, I want to see how far they're willing to take this, the deconstruction of the protagonist's psyche is just so gripping. You'd find yourself wondering what he's fighting for at this point, but still, the plot never disappoints. The battle mechanics are also nothing like i've ever seen... Seriously though, has anyone found out why the parasites make that sound while moving their blades? Pssssiiiiiiih, psuuumm.
  8. There's no real logic to my name I guess. Or I can try to explain, but it won't make sense. Demolishor is that transforming giant robot with a Gatling gun fingers, bend that with Desu and you supposedly get a mechanical girl who can fire up 350 desus per minute. It's just meant to be over-the-top, cute, while not really meaning anything.
  9. Helv already took care of my introductions, that's a pretty apt description, alright. But since tis is also my entry post to the forums, I thought I'd talk a bit more 'bout myself though. Let me see, I love all things moe, a bit of mecha and I've been writing for 8 years or so. I generally just love writing about slice-of-life, romance and weird occurrences in everyday settings. (So basically I'm just copying Haruhi, chuunibyuoki and stuff like that) Though whenever I look back, I realize I always start more than I end up finishing. But I still love all of my characters, and that's what I really want to do with writing, just express their feelings. This project definitely seemed like it could deliver in that department, so I've got high expectations on that! I try to keep my self-promotion to a minimum, but if you're interested in what I've made prior to this, you can probably dig up the link from my profile... (I don't think I'd run into anyone who has played my games before, anyway.) Still, excited to be on board, i don't think I've ever been on a project that would fetch over 200 replies on its thread. So, send me your questions, hatemail, fanmail and even crazy requests.
