It has way more EOP's than JOP's in general and it probably lacks elitism, which shies away potential drama which could, in short, generate more conversations. JOP's are partly right when they refer to original works being better, spoiler alert, they are because translations never deliver what the author intended, and no matter how good the translator is the majority of these games have what makes them special, taken from them. ANyways, I'm derailing too much. In general, there's a broader spectrum of people here, way less than reddit, which leads to the false belief that "we" are more cohesioned, which is a lie. I've never seen such categorization and grouping as I've seen in this medium ever. Then again, I've not been to many mediums either so yeah." Community, that's a thing. We exactly intend to accept people who have just read dokidoki and grisaia and not treat them like shit and talk about how they have inferior taste or something. There are things to appreciate about popular games. You know what does feel good? When you show what you like, don't get slapped for it and get slowly introduced to more underappreciated games that are in some ways like what you've read before. This whole "EOP vs JOP" thing is beyond fuwa. If people intend to go shitting on everyone else, they probably don't belong here. Which brings us to the second point. Modding: and the last point I mention falls back on the topic of modding in this website. I'll try to sum it up saying that the mod team as it is right now feels like good modding consists solely on deleting posts that are "harmful" or "incite hate." I know that there are probably other duties you have to fulfill as a mod, but as far as I'm concerned deleting posts and handing bans without reason / warning seems to be the priority now, god bless. Now, inb4 angry mods come and say "You have two warning posts for trolling, lmao." Firstly, I am not putting as an example my personal experiences here because my warnings were justified (TLDR; I told someone to kill himself in a post and I created troll threads personally attacking Okami.) The issue stems from things like deleting a SoU DeSukA meme with a spongebob picture in a thread that was talking about localizations or something like that, or literally deleting a post that says "Kiri rules this community" in this thread. Mods need to start discerning which posts are clearly toxic and which posts are just friendly banter. Derailing is a shit reason to hide posts and everyone derails in general at some point. Inb4 my post is derailing. Moderation is significantly easier to talk about than anything else ever as far as I'm concerned, and I can answer any questions about it anyone may have. Shoot me a pm, ping me on discord, quote me in some random thread, doesn't make a difference. I don't mean it in a bad way, it's just not what fuwa is about. Being "PC" and making a friendly environment for VN fans is the most important thing for us. So is strict moderation of serious posts. There are a lot of other communities where you can freely do whatever you want. This isn't one of them. 100% serious question, if the main things about fuwa are big points of criticism to you, why are you even here? Do you want to torture yourself? Back in 2015 we had a great thing going with a blog called Fabulous on Fuwa mostly run by Rose, highlighting cool users, threads and projects weekly. Eventually it died out, and I think it's about time we bring it back in a monthly format. Hmm. In my opinion, Saya is pretty complete already. Worldbuilding and all that stuff is unecessary and probably detracts from it. Unless they want to change Saya completely, there's nothing to really do with her as a character other than reiterate what the original VN already did anyway, same for most of the other characters too. I'd have no hopes for this.

Sakura is also inoffensive because it's true. Here's what's coming next for VNs. VNs are cheaply made porn without engaging stories that exist only for a specific audience to pop a boner. It's good that people know it, because if they plan on reading a lot of VNs, they are most definitely going to read a lot of that whether they want to or not. VNs are also other things, and it's a pity those things aren't popular, sure, but there's no reason to run away from the most common type of game out there. Sometimes games based solely around sex appeal manage to have an engaging story, or nice characters or whatever, that's not the norm for those games though. People have this weird stigma around pure sex appeal. Seikon no qwaser is edgy porn for 12 year olds and it's the best anime ever made tbh. I believe more than anyone else that VNs are a medium that's already as good as it could be as far as writing goes. Can go on and on for days about why moege are 11/10 genius writing that pretentious academics can't understand, but you also gotta call things for what they are. I embrace Sakura as a representative of visual novels. Never forget, low-quality porn is how our genre started and how it'll end.

The point is that a lot of what people criticize as being bad writing in VNs are just things they don't understand the appeal of. Wild tonal shifts, very slow-paced comfortable happy slice of life that's not centered around jokes, a melting pot of chaotic confliciting themes and ideas, tons of description, emotional surrealism, the silent MC, etc. Then you get all these hack 4chan writers jerking each other off by saying "I could totally write that and make a fortune" while they don't even understand how to make those story traits work and what they're going for, both for videogame and VN writing. I don't think western storytelling is bad, I just don't like it. The people who actually make a point to say that all of the best things about VNs are VN writers being incompetent though... Not sure whether I should laugh or cry at it.

What even is good writing. What's most popular for VNs are power fantasies and sex appeal, sure, but are those things worth less than other types of writing? Because if they are it's not just VNs, power fantasies and sex appeal sell significantly more in all types of media, especially ones targeted at a younger audience, which western otaku mostly are since anime has only gained real popularity in the last decade over here and they gained that popularity precisely with kids and teens who started out by watching weeb stuff on tv. Then there's also differences in how stories are told. You pick a random person that mostly consumes western media, and you know exactly what anime, LN or VN they'd like. It's going to be stuff like fate stay night and zero, saya no uta, steins gate, legend of the galactic heroes and whatnot, because those stories are written like western media. I tdon't like western media. I don't need more tightly paced show-not-tell dramatic stuff with 3deep5u themes and knowing exactly what type of plot twists are coming and when. Eastern storytelling is different (even when it's doing the whole 3deep5u thing) I enjoy that. The predominant western writing styles and priorities are boring and shitty to me and I want it to stay as far away from me as they possibly can. Think a lot of weebs feel that way tbh.
