Interesting food for thought - esp. because one can easily substitute the examples listed about general gaming, into the current indie VN scene.

hooray i found another person with the same ability as me   , o.k i'll try to explain in easy english and then go on how it works. few people have the ability to see the future also known as the six sense. this website can help you on what it means:

    http://www.school-for-champions.com/senses/6thsense.htm

real life events that other people like us have seen coming:
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1218401/Yes-sixth-sense-The-depth-study-intriguing-dreams-convinced-doctor.html

now this is great and all but there are limits. first you can't change the future, once you wake up you'll lose all memory until the event happen. you can not figure out any technology events (ex: gaming, youtube, etc) all events must be real or to the point where you remember. Holding a memory to change time will alter with real life or will cause the memory to be "invalid" and cease to exist. Writing it down is no different than holding the memory. lastly repeating events such as looking at the lottery will not help you win, we do not have the power to change the future.

Now the complex things, i been learning to use my powers for 20 years (yes since i was 1 years old) so why do we have this power? the answer is simple, we accept possibilities. Unlike normal people that accept nothing but lies or given up hope, we accept anything that might happen. There's no real reason why normal people do that but it doesn't mean some could have the future dream. however the normal people dream are way off, its been shown that normal people only have the future dreams few often not when they accept possibilities. In japan people have this theory, you can read it here:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatsuyume

People outside japan experience it differently, in simple terms we gain greater insight when it happens in our timezone. Now before i end this there are other ways to see the future without sleeping, once of it is by covering your face with your hand (covers the sunlight or any light) which should look like faceplum and stretch any part of your body. You'll be able to see a very small unclear event however its never right or if this can even be consider anything related, study of this move is still under development. What we know is that the brain has a reset system and its very hard for me to explain, this website should help:
    http://www.helpguide.org/harvard/how-your-body-clock-affects-your-sleep.htm

another is a very advanced version, which is a small power to give yourself. You have to know what will happen by planning it out throughout the day. it doesn't have to be very detail, only events that you do know will happen (ex: date, job, eating, walk the dog, etc) and then figure out what will change from past events and how the future can change with these events. Many can say its like detective work but i say its common sense because we accept possibilities.

last known possible way to see the future is by, collaboration with fellow time seeing people. however like i say no one is allow to change the future so doing this will only lead to a day being wasted if not done correctly. basicly everyone must wing it to see what happens of course there is a slight possibility to change the future but no one can really say for sure.

that's all, i been researching this for 20 years and still counting. its confusing yes but just know that you are not alone.

I don't know much about the OELVN scene but I don't think there's literally no competent writer in it right now. I mean, it'd actually be quite impressive if there were zero capable writers in it. Maybe the issue is the one mentioned, they don't know about what they're writing, making it not as good as it could be.

The game I'm making is a fully western setting with western characters in an anime style. A number of other similar projects are also in the works, even just in the forum here.

That said, I agree that it seems like a lot of "western" VN projects are going the Japanese setting route. I don't disapprove by any means, but we already have a truckload of Japanese games with Japanese settings. I'd like to see more western games exploit the unique elements that exist outside Japan, of which there are plenty.

you do know this is a big undertaking, where it might take a whole year to finish with HTML. Also take note that getting a domain like .com is worth $10+ and every other popular domain, then comes the monthly fee of keeping it in that host file with minimal data space and stuff. After even going through all that you still have the problem with people visiting the site, yes you can think of it as original but will people really visit for walkthroughs, advice and art?

There are many other sites with the same idea from worldpress, blogger, website, and timber. As a starting website it will seem like any old VN review, the site needs something better for not just the reader but many other users. Also the income where do you expect that to come from, you could "sell out" as many other sites or you could pay it out of packet. Lastly will anyone still be around after 1 year, if the important users left with no way to protect or progress the site then it will go down hill (like http://mdzanime.me/ bearly any content to keep up).

so keep these in mind as things always look different from the actual view.

firecat reacted to Fred the Barber in Would people actually buy LN ebooks from amazon?
The amount the publisher chooses to charge is basically an optimization problem of maximizing profit. Determining whether it's even worth it to sell a book in the first place is certainly going to require considering production costs, but once you're committed to selling it, the price is just an optimization question of number of purchasers and price, and some less tangible outcomes like reputation (if you become "the guy that charges $500 for a book", it'll negatively impact your future sales just because people get pissed off), but that's not really carrying that much weight unless you go way outside the norms.

So, I don't see why production cost would enter into that calculation at all, except maybe in those side effects like reputation. Let me put it this way: why do you care about what a publisher's profit is for a book, as long as you get the book you want at a price at or below its value to you?

lol if you think any of the people hired by any of these companies are being paid well. It is a requirement for the people they employ to be motivated by passion for the games they work on rather
than by money, because they get paid a laughable amount. Like, a tiny fraction of what actual translators get paid. All people hired by MG, JAST, and SP are essentially volunteers with minor benefits.

Except for Clannad, where Sekai Project used all the money they acquired to hire multiple translators at, AFAIK, the actual standard wage for translators, which is why progress is so fast. But even still, they can pay to make it fast, but apparently not pay to make it good, because according to Herkz the quality of their work is leaving something to be desired.

edit: I do agree that people heavily underestimate the operating costs of these companies and overestimate their profit margins. I'll toss a guess out there and say that Sekai Project still is not exactly laden with cash, they seem to be spending it as quickly as they're getting it in order to keep the gears turning. But my point is that the "skilled labor" issue is worked around by not actually paying them much, which is achieved by not actually employing "skilled" labor but amateurs who do this as a second job in their spare time. This is why official VN translations are also slow and unreliable. If anything, I hope that SP's approach can help break this mold. Because if you actually want this industry to grow and become more popular, they are absolutely going to have to earn much more money than they currently are and actually hire full-time employees at industry standard wages. Unfortunately, I don't see many signs of this happening any time soon.

On second thought, I don't really care that much about this issue.  Sekai Project isn't even releasing games I want... so why I should I even care how they run their business?  Honestly what I don't like about Sekai Project is their "non-adult first" policy rather than their penchant for crowdfunding (though the two are sort of linked).  If they continue down the path they're on they'll simply fall off my radar as a company worth thinking about, much like NIS America.
