bit in a hurry (like always ), but yo, whilst there´re some lonesome few struggling for the recognition they deserve, the very vast amount of oelvns was, is & will probably stay trash, at least if there wont be some adequate change in the devs behaviour. seriously, i cant help but wonder why what feels like every single human individual that´s completely devoid of any sort of talent for writing believes the time has come for him/her to start delivering literary garbage. what´s even worse, that those, who fail knowing their own strengths and obvious shortcomings, are often getting encouraged/supported by various publishers, instead of being told to fuck off, btw. abandon all dreams of literary supremacy, something on which they childishly keep clinging. jesus it pisses me off, not only do they flood the market with failed attempts after failed attempts, no they even dare charging for such literary travesties, encouraged due to being supported by the aforementioned. those who cant do shit and lack any talent aside, the ones trying to make a quick buck only, if a product happens to not be of satisfactionary quality (and i mean it in the very sense of the word), then dont charge for it. period. nothing wrong with going free-doujin and cutting some corners if neccessary, because in the end a possible gain of experience is what matters, or should be important to them. of course in case a product ends up being completely for the fucks, dont release it at all and keep on improving until reading it wont rape ones eyeballs and brains. to me this pretty much is how things should work, or getting handled, but like already mentioned before, the stigma of oelvns being equivalent to rotten poop stems from a great many retards trying to become a writer, when there´s no fucking modicum of talent inhabitating the deluded corpses of theirs. just having watched enough anime/consumed the media wont make anyone automatically a mareni, same as reading hiiro no koku for a zillion times wont turn me into a pimp.

A lot of OELVN's have some side gameplay element. Unless it's well-integrated or unobtrusive that's a turn off for me, OELVN or JPVN.

This is because the JPVN's we know about are commercial releases, because of that, there's almost always a certain standard of conformity. If you go to japanese doujin games you get a similar increase in breath of possible story types and style choices.
There are many different kinds of stories and some just don't interest me. Romcom's, school slice of life, punky cyberpunk, intrigue, modern world historical, pure mecha are all out.
It's hard to tell whether a story is good. The best way is by reliable word of mouth, so you know that the work will either have something you'd enjoy, something good you'd appreciate, or something good to appreciate.
The best I can do when I see an advertisement in a genre I'm interested in, is to look for hints that the author has an idea of what they're doing. Example: Elisa the Innkeeper
If a story is a type that interests me, and I see a sign that author looks like they have a handle on the story, then I would consider reading the story or supporting the kickstarter. Or just general positive reception from people who aren't blindly fanboying. Such is the case for One Thousand Lies, which I have firmly backlog'd.

@XReaper I am sorry if my comment came off as a bit rude. I do understand what you mean. Japanese visual novels are better in a way. It's hard for me to get into them though, but I have been playing Clannad and some others. I guess what I am upset about honestly is, as you said, how OELVN's are flooded with garbage and yet that garbage is what's popular. And yes, a good number of us dev's are as talented as as the ero companies in Japan, but I believe we are growing. Like you I wish for OELVN'S to stop copy Japanese visual novels. As a creator myself it is hard I admit, but I'm hoping I'll be able to create something different. I will say I do like some of the BxG stories (like Clannad) as they help me with new ideas, but I don't want to copy them or have overused tropes. Sadly Steam is filled with a lot of bad vn's or those basically copying Japanese visual novels. People are 100% right in that creators need to do their own things and I also agree we have a lot to learn with our storytelling skills, but I think it's getting better.

XReaper reacted to Zenophilious in Very very sad news in Sekailand, it appears that Emperor Qian has been overthrown by Emperor Ling
Uhhhh...a lot of people hate them for a reason.  Acting like they did nothing to deserve any of it is quite stupid.  I, in no way, mean to say that every criticism of SP is valid, because quite a lot of the whiners are salty pieces of shit that need to grow up (anyone that thinks death threats are a reasonable response to not getting anniemay pr0n should go somewhere far away from civilization), but there are plenty of legitimate complaints that people have with them that they refuse to meaningfully address.  Poor communication, not providing backer rewards that were promised years ago, not being transparent when it comes to whether or not there will be 18+ versions (still waiting for news about 18+ versions that they reportedly said they'd give at Otakon), and no apparent attempts to get unmosaic'd CGs (I really doubt that every company they deal with for 18+ VNs lost the uncensored CGs.  I mean, KARAKARA?  A new VN?  It has mosaics and nothing from SP addressing why?) are what most people complain about, with their repeated use of Kickstarter also being included.  dovac being a pathetic manchild in public is also why quite a few people dislike SP, but it seems like they finally got a handle on that, either by giving him the boot or making sure he doesn't interact with the public on the internet.
Also, if the complainers not buying their products doesn't make a dent in their sales, then why would they be expanding their 18+ catalogue and partnering with Nutaku?  The people that vocally hate them the most are pissed because they seem to not really care about 18+ versions that much.  If anything, that could be taken as them admitting that their previous stance, which seemed to doing 18+ versions as a side project with not a lot of focus on it (100% conjecture, I know nothing about how they run their company), was shooting themselves in the feet when it came to dealing with the core fanbase of VNs.

not much time and no idea what your preferred length is, anyway here to name a few:

rasen kairou2 (reading its prequel first is not really required, though i´d suggest you doing so)
omega no shikai series (mindfuck par excellence & an awesome cast)
oujo no abbaddon (welcome to kana-torture-wonderland, great fucks, great deaths - go for it!)
ts:nonuple9 (who am i, who is she and why is this happening, aka heil phsycal abuse!)
momiji wa kurenaku sono mi o somete (the sin he could no let go, coming back to haunt him hard)
kurai nichiyoubi (primarily aimed at girls, though it´s more unisexual, even in death...)
shingakkou -noli me tangere- (physical rape, mental rape, dreams getting raped, hopes are being raped - basically saying a bloody manifesto of how to screw a person into hating the world. father august approves of this)
ichiyakitan (you, some rotten chick & no fucking clue what´s going on)
kyojin-tachi (it´s free, goes back and forth and will boggle your mind)
stuff by flying shine, such as umi kara kuru mono
soramimi x DIAMOND (cant get anymore weird, cryptic & surreal + a good amount of evilness. trust me there)
& the rather short, old, but nonetheless pretty cool akanemachi kitan (of men & demons try living with a puddle of blood that surrounds them)

edit. almost forgot mentioning w-standard,wonderland, a title that i´m currently reading myself and which turned out being quite enjoyable so far, despite it´s seemingly not finished yet, with more installments still to be released. also the title is no really horror/psychological in a classical manner, more a little weird mix of some (dystopian future and suspense), though it has its moments (a little clumsily written, but since i´m no prose-nazi - fuck it)

edit2: how could i not name the one and only, liar-soft´s kusarihime, which should totally fit into what you´re looking for. beware of the red snow!
Note: some of the ones mentioned above are pure horror, whilst others are not, but more on a psychological level and few do consist of both characteristica. also, this list is by no means definite, it´s just me believing you have already read some of the more modern/prominent works, such as subahibi, higurashi, fairytale requiem & suchalike.

adds UHMA to the list above, pretty short, but good for in between because it´s not that super-deep of a read.
---also i liked all of their endings and did no find them to be unsatisfying, which is something i too consider a literary cardinal sin, same as underdeveloped characters or inconsequent/pointless behaviour.---

The Letter is a non-chronological, horror visual novel game with seven playable characters. It is inspired by famous Japanese horror films, Ju-On: The Grudge & The Ring, by the Korean web-comic, Bongcheon-Dong Ghost, and by horror jRPG games such as Mad Father and Corpse Party.
Development for The Letter is currently work-in-progress. Once the game is complete, it will first be released on Windows, Mac and Linux. It'll then be ported mobile, for both iOS and Android, shortly after.
    Features:
Non-chronological storytelling with seven chapters, spanning over 300,000 words. Seven playable characters with varying personality and approach to difficult situations. Countless butterfly effects; the choices and endings you get for the previous chapters heavily affect how the succeeding chapters will play out. Full English Voice Acting. Animated backgrounds and sprites. Beautifully painted art style, with over 80 backgrounds and 100 CGs. Original soundtrack, with opening and ending theme songs. Quick-Time Events (optional). Mend or break relationships. A branching tree that keeps track of your progress/route. A journal that narrates the events in chronological order, and jots down the clues found about the Ermengarde Mansion. Over 50 achievements. Synopsis:
In the outskirts of Luxbourne City stands a 17th-century English mansion, rumored to be haunted by vengeful spirits. After reading a letter discovered inside on the day of its open house, seven people find themselves trapped in a vicious cycle of madness plaguing the Ermengarde Mansion for centuries. Will they be able to free themselves from it, or will they become another casualty?

The Letter's Beta Demo (V0.2.0) is finally ready for public consumption! Thank you so much for patiently waiting, and we sincerely hope you'll enjoy the game! The beta demo is a testament to what we've been doing these past couple of months, and we're proud of how much the game has evolved since its alpha phase.
This is more or less how the final game is going to look/feel like, and covers the same scenes as alpha. Except for that, every element from the first demo was changed. Beta is now feature complete, but we're continuously enhancing every aspect of the game in preparation for the full release. Please take note that not everything you'll see in this demo is final.
After you finish playing the game, please answer this short survey we've prepared. We value your feedback, so please don't hesitate to tell us what you think! We'll use the data gathered to further improve the game. And as a token of our appreciation, all survey respondents will receive a special wallpaper!
    Questions about this new demo:
    1. Do you like it? Hate it?
    2. What do you think of the characters currently presented? Do you have someone you like in particular?
    3. What do you think of the art style?
    4. How do you find the writing style compared to the alpha demo?
    5. Any other suggestions, comments, critiques?
Thanks so much for your time!

XReaper reacted to ChaosRaven in New interview of DrastikMeasure with MangaGamer
There's a new interview with MangaGamer staff members Kouryuu and Good Haro on the review and blog site www.thedrastikmeasure.com. Like usual, there's not much new stuff they've talked about. Mainly a general introduction into what MangaGamer does and a little bit about their inner workings.
    Still some interesting points:
    - They don't have tentacles as door handles (yet)
    - Their stance on VN's with extreme content: They don't intend to go further than Maggot Baits 'for now' (Hard to believe how they are even able to find new titles with such a harsh restriction... )
    - The decision what titles to bring over is either done by the localization staff, the acquisition team (probably Evospace and ???) or they are approached directly by a Japanese VN company
    - Good Haro apparently the only one among the senior staff with an interest in the otome and BL scene
    - Why the Mangagamer site is... pink
    - The ongoing challenge to get VN's with sexual content more accepted by the mainstream crowd via uncut Steam releases like Kindred Spirits or the specialized landing pages to avoid interferences with other titles
    - No solution to the Steam key problem yet
    - Minori apparently can call former team members back for work on Supipara if necessary. (That's interesting because I was always wondering how they'd get their artist back since he isn't working for them anymore. It seems like the original Supipara team really liked their project.)

It's been a while since I played a novel with map movement (really easy to figure out because it actually tells you what heroine are you going to encounter if you go to X place)

took me long enough rallying for others to also experience the greatness that is nekobanana´s omega no shikai. no regrets so far. last entry is awesome as well. think i´ll write some lines after having seen it through, though there´re still circletempo´s w-standart wonderland and re-world3 which need to be finished first, heck i did even switch over to liquid food, for having at least little more time at my disposal...

btw i strongly suggest you taking your time whilst reading the series above, partly confusing as hell/ a clusterfuck of weirdness and totally not suited as something to be done on the sidelines. i also recommend you non marathonning its entries, one after another, to prevent them from loosing impact and their charms as well. anyway enjoy!

edit. heathen, burn for non feeling like start reading 滅び朽ちる世界に追憶の花束を. it´s a straight kamige, comparable to himawari in terms of impact. not even your fondness coming to grimgar will save your soul. damn you.

in case you are no fag priorizing shiny-visuals over actual writings, a thing which i´m rather sure of you aren´t, please and by all means try going for the stunningly written 茜街奇譚 -Akanemachi kitan-. quite confident there said work would please your longing for the unique and atmospherically intense more than enough, despite being not that long of a read itself. it´s a story of great dept and more close to a traditional novel, which is also reflected in the quality of writing. the story is mainly told in 3rd person narrative, though it switches to 1st person if needed, and does also make (rudimentary) use of effects when coming to pivotal parts, albeit no flashy ones.
quite confident there in the shockingly poor tastes of mine, that in retrospect, this is not a works of fiction you personally would have wanted to have missed out on reading through. enjoy!

took me long enough rallying for others to also experience the greatness that is nekobanana´s omega no shikai. no regrets so far. last entry is awesome as well. think i´ll write some lines after having seen it through, though there´re still circletempo´s w-standart wonderland and re-world3 which need to be finished first, heck i did even switch over to liquid food, for having at least little more time at my disposal...

btw i strongly suggest you taking your time whilst reading the series above, partly confusing as hell/ a clusterfuck of weirdness and totally not suited as something to be done on the sidelines. i also recommend you non marathonning its entries, one after another, to prevent them from loosing impact and their charms as well. anyway enjoy!

edit. heathen, burn for non feeling like start reading 滅び朽ちる世界に追憶の花束を. it´s a straight kamige, comparable to himawari in terms of impact. not even your fondness coming to grimgar will save your soul. damn you.

in case you are no fag priorizing shiny-visuals over actual writings, a thing which i´m rather sure of you aren´t, please and by all means try going for the stunningly written 茜街奇譚 -Akanemachi kitan-. quite confident there said work would please your longing for the unique and atmospherically intense more than enough, despite being not that long of a read itself. it´s a story of great dept and more close to a traditional novel, which is also reflected in the quality of writing. the story is mainly told in 3rd person narrative, though it switches to 1st person if needed, and does also make (rudimentary) use of effects when coming to pivotal parts, albeit no flashy ones.
quite confident there in the shockingly poor tastes of mine, that in retrospect, this is not a works of fiction you personally would have wanted to have missed out on reading through. enjoy!

Voice acting would have seriously detracted from the game, a ton. It also would have ruined some of the tricks the VN has up its sleeve to alter the reader's perspective.

it was a really good visual novel. one of the very few times where i actually didn't thought about money wasted on a crap VN. , it was much better than i expected even though i am not into big oppai. the plot is really funny and amazing in general. i sincerely hope manga gamer will translate the sequels. will definitely buy the rest when they get translated in the future if they ever did.
the visual novel itself is also longer than i expected, and each choice will matter and will put you into a different ending. not to mention the branch off in mid story. translation was of good quality, manga gamer did a good job on this one even though i think its a little bit overpriced but its okay since it was worth it.

    Who was Hinata again...?
I've been steadily reading 灰と幻想のグリムガル (actually a light novel, not a VN). Really been enjoying it for what it is: a party-based RPG fantasy story with heavy character focus. Glad it actually occurred to someone to write a story like this.
I plan to read Omega no Shikai -Shiki no Hajimari next. The OP/ED's are great (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHQ4YaQAyyI) , and I have faith in the doujin producer to make something good and engrossing.
though I might try Tokage no Shippo Kiri for psychological gore..

I was thinking about playing 滅び朽ちる世界に追憶の花束を but it's slightly similar in emotion to 灰と幻想のグリムガル so that's on hold.

suba is crap 80% of the novel, i didnt even bother with sakura and giniro is really a different novel from the first two(I assume since like I said didn't read sakura).
It all depends on what you want to read, something pretty slow and heartwarming or something really fucked up and pretentious  all of them are pretty long so if you don't have time to read you shouldn't pick any of those.
