  1. Since ceasing VN of the Month, I've been slowly recovering from my years of over-reading VNs, the vast majority of them ones I normally wouldn't have taken an interest in. While I still play VNs regularly, I do so at a slower pace, reading more conventional literature and playing normal games as much as I do them. I recently began to regain some of my VN stamina (though I will never get back to where I was), and I've found that even the SOL VNs I choose to play are far less stressful than before. It is nice to reconfirm that I truly love VNs, after so many years playing far too many charage threatened to make me hate them. However, I've also noticed that I am far less tolerant of obvious blunders and poor choices on the part of writers, regardless of genre. When something touches on my pet peeves, I immediately drop the VN, and I lose all urge to play it, often for months after. This was the case with Sorceress Alive and it is also the case with Raillore to Ryakudatsusha (dameningen protagonists with no interesting or redeeming traits are one of my pet peeves). On the other hand, my stamina for 'sweetness' and 'ichaicha' in a VN has recovered somewhat, and I can play a route in a charage with no troubles... However, I no longer desire to play any routes other than that of my favorite heroine. I used to mechanically run through all the heroines in a VN without hesitation or slowing down, but now I only go for the one or two heroines that interest me, ignoring the others entirely. This change in my own behavior leaves me somewhat bemused, though I can see where it comes from rationally. I simply got tired of plowing through huge numbers of boring heroines that almost buried the good ones, lol.

  2. While I'm fine with yuri on occasion, my preference is for the standard relationship types (female dominant or male dominant is fine). Generally speaking, I don't have a strong attachment to romance as a plot element in general, though... so if there are no h-scenes, I can even play shounen ai, lol.

  3. Taisho x Alice was sadly remembered in the western otomege fandom for one of the worst otome localizations disasters. It read like garbage, had several bugs and it featured amateur english voice acting as if reading engrish wasn't enough. It failed so spectacularly the localization didn't even get past episode 1 out of 3. Well, thankfully tbh. Still, the damage was there and for a long time we believed we would never see a proper localization of this cute fairy tale reimagination in the west. Until now. Primula (TaiAli developer) decided to give english audiences one more chance, complete in a multilanguage package with japanese and chinese options to boot! Rejoice folks as Taisho x Alice episode 1 is now available on steam with a proper translation (translator this time around is our precious verdelish and from what I read from her previous VN translations it's likely top notch)! Episode 1 have only 2 heroes but they have full proper routes. The rest is in episodes 2 and 3, coming soon if episode 1 sells well enough. It's not always we get second chances in VN localization scene so let's say one huge thank you to Primula and support if you can and if you dig cute otomes! *points to strong female protagonist tag in VNDB, hint, hint* DISCLAIMER: sadly I wasn't paid for this promotion, I did it out of hype alone.

  5. Yeah, I'm not even sure why, but I'm really interested in this one! I'm definitely going to check it out eventually, I'm just not sure when exactly.

  6. Holy Mother of Horrible Translations, this is kind of hilarious, but mostly I'm just baffled trying to imagine what the original line looked like. I don't think it went according to keikaku. Wow, it's the 90s all over again, with Japanese devs having no idea how to localize stuff... "How can we appeal to this mysterious Western audience? Maybe with CHEAP TRANSLATION and EVEN CHEAPER DUBBING! That sounds perfect."

  7. this person (not me) goes through one of the routes, I won't take responsability for any hearing damage. although those videos don't go through the worst meme in the old translation.

  8. Holy damn, a crappily-dubbed Engrish localisation? That's kind of amazing in its stupidity. Will have to look for some playthrough of that, but also happy the game received a second chance after being mistreated like that. :]

  10. One issue with Japanese GxB/otomege is that they are an outgrowth of what is called 'classic shoujo manga style'. Almost all Japanese GxB is written with a female protagonist being dominated by a cast of male alphas. For me, it is immensely frustrating, since I started playing otomege thinking there would be some strong women, at least in the chuunige-like ones. However, this wasn't the case, unfortunately... The only otomege that ever managed not to annoy me was Sanzen Sekai Yuugi. It is partially an outgrowth of the same bad literary habits that gave birth to the non-person protagonist in moege/charage, but another part of it is an ingrained cultural image of the place of women in Japanese culture that remains even now. To be blunt, I'm not a submissive by nature. I can be passive if I don't have an interest in an argument, an object, or a discussion. However, I have to actually rein myself in from going after what I want fighting tooth and nail. As such, beta protagonists drive me crazy, and protagonists who don't have a set personality are just as bad. Edit: I can make exception for beta protagonists who are capable in other areas/are stubborn about the things they care about, but that exception doesn't really cover as many as you'd think.

  11. Overall, I don't care. Like some other people above, I don't really play vns for romance or sex, so whatever works is fine for me. That said, historically I played a lot more bxg VNs than any other type simply because they are easier to find and seem to be closer to the types of stories that interest me, though recently I've been kind of fed up with how much they focus on hentai. Still, I can't really call it a preference. When it comes to manga or lns, I actually like a lot of plot-focused shoujo too.

    What are you playing?

Well, the lacrosse arc IS the dullest arc in the entire Muv Luv series after all, so I wouldn't be surprised if you found it to be disappointing. Don't worry though; Unlimited will get much better.

    Favorite Romance Pairing

Assuming the first letter is the protagonist, my first choice for visual novels is GxG and my second choice is BxG. I don't play the other two types. I'm a straight male, but I don't need to see guys in games. I typically turn the male voices off when that option is offered. In the games, I don't speak much to the male side characters unless I have to. When I play roleplaying games with romantic possibilities, I check online to see which option gives me more female romances to choose from and pick that option for my character. If they are equal, I'll play as a female character and go with a GxG route.

  14. Maybe... tbh, with me, it is all about the genre. I would never play a shounen ai or yuri romance, because I have no interest in either... I got that out of my system relatively early on. I have problems with otomege because almost all protagonists in otomege are damsels in distress (which ups my blood pressure). However, I'll at least try any fantasy or sci-fi action if the romance doesn't distract from it, lol.

  16. The development has recently encountered a couple of obstacles and pitfalls, but guess what. I *think* the new version of the demo is working. : ) It still needs some additional testing, would you like to help me with that? You can download it here! Does it start for you, can you play it? At one point, the Mac version was crushing out after saving. I hope it’s fixed. : P ---------------------------------- And if you wonder what has changed since the last version but you plan to wait for the full game, here are some highlights, just for context: the available content has tripled - you can visit four new areas (each one is significantly different) and engage in three complex dialogues that they involve a completely new music was introduced the in-game journal now includes a chapter that summarizes interesting clues related to various NPCs the inventory screen is completely redesigned and much more convenient area illustration and inventory icons were updated text parser that don’t need to support capital letters, like the one in the dolmen, don’t use them anymore various bits of dialogues and interactions were enhanced various spelling / phrasing fixes new menu screen bugs were eliminated - unless?

  17. I absolutely haaaaaaaate using walkthrough. It constantly distracts me as I have to check it every time and it breaks my immersion and it takes away all the feeling of accomplishment of getting the outcomes I want by myself (100% something by my own is something I really enjoy). I very rarely have problem getting into the route I want anyway. I only use them when I tried and failed multiple times, when the system is too much of an ass for me to try again after failing, when I'm stuck with absolutely no idea what to do (if gameplay is involved), for completionists sake if the task is really boring to do by myself (like finding random collectibles, although lately I don't even bother anymore). If the system is very convoluted by default, I rather skip the game.
