  1. I'm not privy to the exact details, but voice licensing is always very complicated in Japan. In this case there's the 18+ PC version, then several console ports (where the seiyuus go by their real names and not the 18+ aliases), and even an anime to muddle the waters. The seiyuus are also very famous so they may have stricter clauses in their contracts than usual. EDIT: Oh, and it's released by the developers themselves, not a localization company, so that's not a factor.

  2. There's a demo out now: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1010600/The_Princess_the_Stray_Cat_and_Matters_of_the_Heart/ It covers a pretty hefty portion of the common route of the game. Also official release date of June 17.

  3. KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK this bug is very funny... Man, using the KrKr folder select window, Cut the folder, open the desktop (out of the krkr folder) and paste, then you can get access to the files...

  6. There won't be an official 18+ patch, the voice licensing for it seems very difficult.

  13. The problem with thinking 'prose' is all about muh chuunige or whatever is that much of comedy is just as dependent on good unmetered writing as whatever the so-called prose nerds like. Would Grisaia's common route, which could well have continued into moe style routes rather than what it actually does with a few tweaks, really have been close to as good with a lame translation? Good prose doesn't have to mean big words or descriptions tinted dangerously close to the violet end of the spectrum either. Nailing character voice, which seems to me like something you'd want in a character-focused moege to make the girls feel alive, is entirely a prose problem, and indeed a translation quality problem.

    Japanese Help Thread

Well, these aren't that easy. Japanese just has a lot more freedom when it comes to puns and wordplay. I thought the joke was about meaning of the word, but now I see that this is more of a kanji reading quiz. The challenge was to come up with something that fulfilled three basic conditions: Ichigo has a childish misunderstanding about the reading (and meaning of the word), Zakuro has some kind of meme interpretation and the meaning of the word is something that you wouldn't be able to guess by its components. Kinda like the word white-collar - it has nothing to do with collars or white things. On top of that, it should be a word that isn't too easy or too obscure, and in the second example, there's even a reference to an artist. Anyway, I like how this one turned out. The next one was kinda annoying, and I'm not all that satisfied with it for two reasons. One because it might be too weird of a word to show up on a quiz, and second because I ended up changing it to a pop culture reference. I looked at composers, artists, and even authors, but couldn't come up with a decent pun. Maybe a native speaker would have an easier time coming up with a better word, but at least I found something that keeps the "snake" part. It's decent, I guess.

  15. I really like the Crunchyroll translation on this image. I think that's the general idea of what most of the fans are after and used to. People are just afraid of translations like Hadena and 4Kids *cofcofwhichsometimesifeelthatwegetthosecofcof*

  16. Just goes to show how questionable stylistic choices can destroy an otherwise acceptably accurate translation for a considerable chunk of the audience. Readers are not robots constantly analyzing the accuracy percent, after all, they just want to enjoy the stuff they read, and original obnoxious "style" of the translator can hamper that enjoyment a lot more than actual mistakes in the translation which they possibly wouldn't even notice without a TLC. Though, at the same time people occasionally complain about the stuff they wouldn't like in the japanese version either and project those dislikes on the translation so what do I know? The line is thin and the end is not in sight. Any work in a creative field is generally a thankless job so when you obtain the power to implement questionable ideas you personally like, it's easy to forget that you ultimately do this work for the people to enjoy.

  17. Well if they managed to get it released at this year, I guess it would be the good news here. In any case, for now I can only hope that the QA would be going well so that we can see this released in the near future, so that at least it could be a good achievement from JAST.

  18. I haven't read it yet (it waits in queue), but probably wouldn't have got it at all if only ero version was available. I was like: Wow, VN about trains! - "Open the gates!!!" Then: Shit, it's lolige! - "Close the gates!!!!" And finally: But there will be all-ages version - "Open the gates a little"

  19. Or if the original has h-content one is uncomfortable with (hint: Maitetsu)

  20. You highligted wrong part "All-ages" isn't end of the world, if done skillfully, but when translation is horrible, even h-scenes won't save it Or does it have so high amount of H that there's almost nothing left without it?

  21. A translator will just have to translate however he/she wants. A translator will never be able to satisfy everyone. Half wants a translation that's directly translated from its source language and the other half wants it tailored towards not only their language but their culture as well (which to me is incomprehensible, but that's my opinion).
