  1. Navel just annoucned on twitter that they have started working on a direct sequel to Shuffle, "Shuffle, Episode 2." The game's website. (Very bare-bones atm.) As a big fan of Shuffle, I'm pretty hyped about this!

  3. What I remember about Shuffle is that it was scene-based--it jumps straight to the notable moments, much like an anime. This is likely one of the reasons it is popular in the West. Many games try to fill out each day from the protagonist's perspective, from when he gets up to when he goes to bed. It's very difficult to tell a compelling narrative like this unless your protagonist or setting are extremely unique and you can make each moment meaningful and fascinating. Most attempts fail.

  4. He created the setting from scratch and is generally seen as defining the style of the early harem charage genre. His influence can be seen anywhere where you see a kind and proactive protagonist surrounded by a bevy of bishoujos who have a good (or at least, well-explained) reason for falling in love with the protagonist. Honestly, Spiral was something of a disappointment to me... it failed to accomplish anything and the heroines were all human, which was weird, since what is the point of a multi-racial setting if you don't have a good mix? tbh, whether the game is something to look forward to or not will depend on the choice of writer. If it is the same writer as Spiral (the DC III pathetic third-rate moege writer Takeuchi) then I won't want anything to do with it, as he managed to completely fail to give life to the setting, while having plenty of opportunity and elements of the setting to do so. The Shuffle FD's and expansions were generally decent, but part of that is because Agobarrier was there to consult with on how to fit the new stories into the existing setting. Now that he's gone, I honestly can't bring myself to be optimistic after Navel's abominable choice of staff for Spiral.

  5. This is the one to read inbetween two longer titles, as it takes only about 120 hours to finish.

  6. https://mobile.twitter.com/Denpasoft_pr/status/1122971689585823744 I was emailed by them. Really long list that includes a ton of classics as well. If there was a title you want from Sekai Project, guess it's time to grab it now (chances are it is on sale)

  8. Ah yes, a third generation Honda Acty. I've owned one, very nice to drive. The clothing pictures are nice, but I also would like to see the more ordinary fashion. The web stores I browse very least don't seem to show everything at least if you go by what kind of clothing is seen in manga. Thanks for the pics, but I do hope to see more when you live there again.

  9. Haha, nice. I don't have a license, not to mention that Japanese people drive on the wrong side of the road. (*ノωノ) Cool cars, though. Well, uh, I have a couple of pictures of people in traditional clothing from Kyoto: I didn't really take any pictures of cars there, as ... well, it's not really something I'm intrested in, personally. But, I did find this on my phone: There's a front of a car, at least, lol. There's lots of pretty unique car types in Japan, most that look like this. They are pretty short and... square, lol.

  10. That's very interesting! In contrast to this SPIRAL! thing they released some time ago, this actually 'looks' like Shuffle. Those are clearly Sia and Nerine on the cover page. I guess it certainly helps that the original artists are actually drawing the VN this time and aren't just 'assisting with school uniform design' and leaving the character designs to a loli artist from Da Capo. Maybe... there is even a chance for my favorite character Ai (my avatar) from the Nerine fan disc to be included. The list of writers actually looks pretty impressive. They have Ou Jackson and Higashinosuke on board, the main writers of Oretachi and Tsuriotsu which are Navel's most highly regarded works. I hope they'll keep the the two Da Capo writers from messing things up. That was certainly one of the main reasons it got popular both in Japan and in the west. It's rating isn't high, but there aren't that many VN's with more than 3000 votes on VNDB. Popularity isn't just about a high rating but also about the vote count. Shuffle's main strength was arguably its simplicity, so it's not surprising that the rating isn't high. It's the same with Nekopara - huge popularity and high vote count, but the rating is below 7. I also appreciate that Shuffle was a somewhat fast-paced moege - in the worst case it at least didn't overstay its welcome. Many moeges nowadays are real slice of life monsters with huge amounts of filler text that unfortunately have the tendency to bore me to death. Though Shuffle did have an interesting setting, so I think there's also more potential in it than just a simple moege if they want to.

  11. It's a pretty well known game in Japan. There's a reason why Navel has been milking the series with fandisks and expanded versions for so long. (Heck, their most recent game, Spiral! Is also set in the same universe.) Sure took them long enough to make the actual sequel, though. As for the votes from western fans goes, there's been many different releases of Shuffle in the west, none of them all that great, with the most recent one being both censored, and having a poor translation. The first MG release also had a rather shoddy translation, and their fixed version is no longer on sale, due to license issues. Not to mention, the west hasn't been able to play the "full" version of shuffle, "Essense+", which is by far the best way to experience the game, with tons of added routes and content, as well as an expanded scenario for the core game. Yes, he passed away in 2016. He is credited on the sequel's website as the series' "creator". It's possible he had some notes or something that the current writers can go off, who knows. But, the writing team will be different, ofc.

  14. I’m not writing this for you. I’m writing it for myself. 今年もとある滑稽な癖に従い、伝統ありのヴァルパージス炎を観に行った。別にその滑稽な想いだけが理由でもなくが、正直な所、その想い未だ持っているだけは情けないと思う。 I met my soulmate about a week before I started the first, transitional year of elementary school. I guess that means we were like, six or seven years old? She was sitting on the swing in the playground next to an apartment complex, and for whatever reason I was drawn to her instantly – I broke off from my parents and greeted her, and we got along like a house ablaze. The next time I saw her was at school. She was in my class, and it was only natural that we’d be inseparable from that point on. Or was it? There was another boy who by now I barely remember who used to be in the picture, but he moved away. I think at one point she – I guess I’ll call her M – told me I was actually her second choice, but that other boy had left, so she’d picked me. Looking back I find myself analyzing this interaction as heckin’ weird, but at the time I accepted this without feeling bad about it. I guess I used to be even more obviously autistic than I am now. Soulmates, for those reading who have had the misfortune of never having had one, are a real thing. It’s hard to describe the feeling of absolute, utter 乗り, of flow, I felt in her presence. Sometimes I doubt myself – did she feel the same? – and I guess by now I’ll probably never know. But there was something there I have never felt interacting with anyone else in my life. She and I were best friends for I think five years. For most of them, as far as I know, I was essentially a donkan eroge protagonist, going as far as openly telling other people ‘she loves me, but I don’t love her’. We were officially boyfriend and girlfriend to each other for a little while at the end, but the most intimate thing that ever happened was a hug. Technically we got best couple at a dance or something, but frankly what I did there was a performance, not *real*. So I’m left with the curious feeling that while I may have unlocked the achievement ‘kissed a girl’, though we never did do it in the French fashion, I have never done it when it truly meant something to me. I think it’s fair to say I was a late bloomer when it comes to emotional maturity, if I ever hit it. Eventually we slid apart, gradually, seemingly as naturally as we were first joined. Different classes and different friend circles meant we rarely met. We actually did happen to join up once again after having slid apart, however, and it felt just like to old times to me as we took a walk together. But that was it; we went to different high schools, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen her since then. 今でも彼女を会いたいなぁっと想い、毎年あの炎に行く。 Mum told me she went to IT-Gymnasiet. 毎年「やっぱり居ないなぁ」って感じで炎の原始的な美しさを楽しみながらちょっとした悔しい思いも含む状態でいる。 She talks to M’s mum sometimes, I guess. 必死染みた所もあり彼女を探して失敗して、毎度悔いの有る想いを持ちながら火を観るのも飽き、家を向いて戻り始める。 今も会いたい。それだけだ。 View the full article
