  1. I know it’s hard being a fan translator because for one you might get cease and desisted if the company finds out you’re translating their intellectual property, two it could be such an arduous task, third people will shit all over your translation for being “too literal”, “ bad prose” etc. I sincerely want to thank you all for helping the medium grow to this level. So, if you’re struggling right now with a translation: Please. Don’t. Give. Up. Because learning Japanese isn’t like picking up Spanish or French, it’s such a huge learning curve and nobody aside from the most dedicated of fans are willing to learn it just to read JVNs. I became a fan of this medium the moment I read Fate/Stay Night by the God and Goddesses of Mirror Moon. After that, I read Fate/Hollow Ataraxia. That wouldn’t have been possible without you guys. While there’re companies that will localize VNs, they have to localize only the ones they can make a profit off of or have permission to do so. Which is very limiting. There’s so many God-Tier JVNs like Mahoyo that remain untouched or the fan translation group gave up. You guys translate visual novels out of the kindness of your heart. I couldn’t be any more grateful. If I met any of you in person, in real-life, I would buy you a beer and give you hug. It’s the least I could do, because people forget how small this community really is. We’re extraordinarily niche. There’s many otaku who have no idea what a visual novel is and they might never even heard of it unless there’s an anime adaptation of said visual novel. But they wouldn’t be able to read it, unless it was translated. Such as the case with Fate/Stay Night and many other visual novels that were adapted into anime. If you’re working on translating a visual novel, please finish it, you may not know, but there could be someone out there who will read your translation and join this amazing community. I am proof of that, and everyone else here who cannot read Japanese is proof of that. I want you all to know that. I want you all to know how important each of you are. Especially, when elitists are quick to belittle all your efforts. Keep going. Keep pressing forward. Fan translators are the unsung heroes of the visual novel medium. You sacrifice time, effort, and many other things to put something out there without any pay. Translating has been such a thankless job, so I will extend my thanks and I hope many others will do the same. Especially since Fuwanovel is home to fan translations. There wouldn’t be a EVN renaissance without you. Hell. There wouldn’t be a fandom or a community here, since you guys literally make visual novels popular in the west.

  2. If you are competent and have delivered a quality product (i.e. translates from one language to another properly, reads well in the second language), then I agree, endless gratitude and praise to you. If you have not, I'll still give you many thanks and compliments if you can recognize your issues, fix them, and learn for later. If, however, you don't care about quality or are too stubborn to accept constructive criticism, and you fail to acknowledge your issue or improve, then fuck you, you're a cancer to the VN community and only promote the accumulation of garbage.

  3. Summary Within the halls of the newly constructed Eorzea High School, one tightly knit gardening club will wreak havoc and chaos in their unending quest to plant a single flower. From dodge ball tournaments, to heroic deeds, the Dawn Shield Gardening Club will stop at nothing to have a little bit of fun together during the school year. Join Persha, Noaa, and Mayvi as they recruit new members for their club and do what they can to prevent Persha from going crazy with boredom. Characters Persha: A highly energetic Miqo'te who loves nothing more than running around outside through the grass. It was his idea to begin the gardening club for the sole purpose of having an excuse to play around in the dirt and grass some more without getting in trouble. Noaa: A Lalafell, and de facto leader of the Gardening Club. Noaa loves music, drawing, singing, and dancing, and will find any excuse she can to create a little bit of music. As childhood friends with Persha, she is one of the few people who knows how to handle the spastic Miqo'te and his tendencies. Mayvi: A studious Aura, Mayvi loves nature and was a natural fit for the gardening club. She often acts as the mother of the club, making sure everyone is taken care of and stepping in when a club member is in need. Be it food, medical attention, tutoring, or just company in general, Mayvi is always glad to lend a hand. Araceli: Araceli has recently moved into the city from a far away town in the north. Lacking in any sense of direction or maybe even sense at all, the young Hyur often finds herself lost or caught up in relatively outlandish situations. She joins the gardening club as a means of returning a favor after being saved by Persha from, what she figured, was certain death. Anglea: Anglea, the interim student council president has the unenviable task of ensuring the gardening club is following all of the school rules and regulations for club conduct. She is seemingly good at everything she attempts, having stellar grades and being shockingly athletic. However, despite her outwardly strict attitude, it would seem that Anglea might be slightly more mischievous than first believed. Sujih: A no-nonsense member of quite a few school sports teams, Sujih finds herself getting wrapped up increasingly in the gardening club's escapades throughout the school. As quiet as she is tomboyish, she finds it somewhat difficult to make friends, not that she is especially interested in making them. Screenshots Credits Character and CG Art: Charmiespecs BG Art: mugenjohncel GUI: Namastaii Music: Kevin MacLeod The boring stuff: solidbatman Target Release Date: Summer 2019 This project is a learning experience for me as I learn my way around Ren'py in preparation for a larger, more serious project. The characters are based off of the Final Fantasy XIV characters in the Free Company I am a part of. A special thanks for my Free Company for without their motivation, characters, and friendship, this project would have never taken shape. A huge thank you also to the Ren'py community for fantastic guides, CC assets, and the engine itself. I hope this project is of interest to people, and am open to any feedback.

  4. yeah, I can't remember if I lost that argument or if I didn't bother making it in the first place since I could tell I wouldn't win... TBH, you're definitely setting the bar a little high here... but I think we did okay with this one. Edit: lol, fair. That's actually 100% my fault on that decision of turning the units into imperial. I'm genuinely sorry about that one; I wouldn't change it back, but I totally empathize with you finding it annoying if you're more familiar with metric. At the end of the day, you can't please everybody, and by default I aim for Americans, who aren't going to have that intuitive grasp of how far something away is in meters, or how heavy it is in kilograms, etc., and who I don't want to kick out of the immersion by having to think through a conversion. But that, of course, means that instead I kick folks like you out of the immersion... So... I'm sorry.

  6. And with that, my promised commitment to this project is over. As I listen to the last movement of Beethoven's 9th symphony and watch the ring dissolve in the fire of mount doom, I bid this project farewell and godspeed.

  8. Oh damn, that's awesome. I've never played FF XIV, but I absolutely adore how it encourages this kind of role-playing. Have fun with this, I'll be looking forward to seeing how it turned out and what your "serious" project is going to be about.

  10. I've watched through One Punch Man and... It's good? I don't think it's THAT fantastic, as it's practically recycling one joke over and over again through the whole season. It effectively puts all the shounen conventions on their head and is masterfully produced, but it didn't really captivate me. A strong 8/10, but I'd still consider it overhyped. Well, maybe overhyped to the point where it couldn't possibly match the expectations, but even if we're talking about this particular author's work, I think Mob Psycho 100 is a way better series - it uses some similar themes, like the absurdly OP and unassuming protagonist, but does much more interesting things with them. On the other hand, I'm now more than half-way through A Place Further Than the Universe and it might be my first 10/10 rating. I mean, can you really do better with kind of slice-of-life/adventure anime? With how likeable and believable the characters are, how good and usually subtle the humour is, how genuine the drama feels... I definitely won't try to claim that it's the best anime ever, but in its own category it feels like pure excellence. At least, if it can keep up the quality until the end. I'll probably finish it around the weekend, as I have some more-urgent things in the next few days and this series deserves taking your time and paying proper attention to it.

  11. "Good developer" I'm not even a good VN fan. And most of the characters are already married and their relationships will be shown in this story or the follow up. I'm trying not to bite off more than I can chew since I'm in grad school.

  12. But why do you insist that it should be "localized into murrican"? Isn't "translated into english" enough anymore? If that's the case and the alternative, I'd say, fuck localizations, translation is enough and can reach much wider audience. I have no interest at all in american culture, so "fully localized" VN in the way you describe is pointless for me. This argument could also be reversed - "if you Murricans want murrican VNs, then write your own, instead of butchering japanese ones" And yet most of OELVNs are shit... Or is it all just elaborate trolling and I'm too dumb to notice it?

  14. You are one of the reasons people are reluctant to translate. "Constructive criticism".. yes, i've heard that term tossed around tl threads, but it has been almost nothing but shit talk and borderline harassment. It takes reading half your post to see you're the type as well, with your somewhat arrogant attitude and all. Do take this as constructive criticism and see how easy it is.

  15. Yeah, thanks to the fan translators from back in the day that helped me discover this pretty cool sub genre of entertainment. I probably wouldn't have found it if I hadn't sought out the translation of Galaxy Angel. So yeah I hope you guys can actually finish all those projects that you started so that I can either play them or leave them languishing in my to play folder till the end of time.

  16. The one VN you absolutely must read is Tsuma no Niku Ana ni Homestay Suru Macho Ryuugakusei ~Shucchouchuu no Sono Ura de, Tsuma wa Kurobikari Bou kara Afureru Hodo no Hakudaku o Sosogare, Yorokobi ni Michita Acme-gao o Sarashiteita~. It's simply an amazing work that left me absolutely floored after reading.

  17. The VN I dropped was Sakura no Mori Dreamers (just played the common route). For Aozora I played 3/5 routes and am planning to finish it. The game has some pretty depressing events. On some routes, you get hints of what happens to the other heroines, and its usually not happy. You should really play it if you are curious. Fumino is best girl.

  18. Greetings, this is Sekai Project. We love fan translators too! They really help to reduce our workload so that we can release our licensed visual novels in a timely manner like with Tenshin Ranman and Dracu-Riot. If you're ever thinking of going official we also treat our translators really well and pay them on time, just ask Arudoc. Don't forget to support our upcoming Kickstarter!

  19. There are a lot of light VNs that I am interested in: - Paradise Lost and Kajiri Kamui Kagura are connected to Dies irae - Soushuu Senshinkan Gakuen Hachimyoujin (Senshinkan for short) has already been asked for on twitter. It has also a sequel in Soushuu Senshinkan Gakuen Bansenjin. - Silverio Vendetta and it's sequel Silverio Trinity - Gunjou no Sora o Koete (also has a really good reputation) - Sora no Baroque (light's newest work) There is also a bunch of other chuunige that I would love seeing in Vermilion -Bind of Blood-, Zero Infinity -Devil of Maxwell- and Electro Arms -Realize Digital Dimension-. So light has titles for years as far as I am concerned and I am sure I missed some interesting titles in this list too. Let's just hope that they find their venture into the west worthwhile and start working on more translations.

  22. And <drum roll> porting of the original english script is finished! All flags routes and choices seem to work correctly. Now comes the hard part - restoring removed parts, and trying to fix overall TL-awkwardness. Also I want to add some sound effects.

But that's just the Bayesian rating, which is low for almost every VN with a low vote count. The actual rating is 8.11 which is actually pretty high - I wouldn't call that an underdog anymore. Anyway, one of my hidden favorites would be probably the old Moero Downhill Night 2 from Jast. It's a moege which was inspired by the racing anime Initial D (which I'm a big fan of). I never understood why it's rated with just a low 6.44 even if it has a way more creative story than most other moeges. Maybe it was punished because it wasn't a damn school life moege.

It needs to be said that many truly awesome games that are untranslated are also underrated on vndb... My example is the kamige: Komorebi no Nostalgica, which has a rating of 6.83

The Shadows of Pygmalion. I only started reading the demo because I was in the mood to read something trashy, but, as the game progressed, I found myself enjoying it more and more. Almost everyone on Fuwa agrees that this game was a pure disappointment, but I actually kind of liked it overall, even though I definitely see all its flaws.

The Letter (forgotten after a few youtubers finished it, but has one of the best branch systems in the genre) Kizuato (only spoken about in historical discussions, but has a really good introductory route and entertaining joke endings) Vampirdzhija Vjedogonia (closer to good than great, but it's a fun action story) EoSD for Busy Person (seriously entertaining if you've ever been a part of the Touhou fandom)

  28. Playing 果てしなく青い、この空の下で (vndb). I got interested when I saw it on a 2ch top 100 VN's list (youtube). It starts out with the MC living in a small countryside village in the recent past (1990's perhaps). The MC and mere 5 other students of the village school find out that this year will be their last. Hints of modernization are present, urged on by a tycoon scoundrel Doujima who seeks to take over the village. But as the MC spends time and gets to know some of his female schoolmates a bit better, he can't help but think they have a connection to the supernatural occurrences he starts experiencing. Art direction is more realistic, sort of like Kara no Shoujo. All the heroines have black hair(!). There's lots of little sfx, and periods without music. The CG feels a bit underwhelming because of the art style having few details. But it doesn't feel like the developers cut any corners. The sprite variations are expressive and the background CG blends well. Voice acting is fitting for the characters, is quite good. If I have to say, the story is not really moe. There is some moe appeal in there, but the heriones are quite... hard to approach. They have their own way of thinking, and often defy or baffle the protagonist. That and the VN can be a bit heavy. Not a relaxing or happy VN, instead a bit contemplative and unsettling. I would say it is similar but in many ways better than Kizuato (vndb), and compared to Higurashi it is much more subdued (no comedy, less edgyness). Would recommend if you want some interesting older work with decent plot. PS: speaking of no comedy, it reminds me of Sakura no Mori Dreamers which I played a while back. Full length action/horror with no comedy to lighten the mood. It was so stifling I dropped it.

  32. localization as its name suggests stands for localizing sth, eg. in this case the act of porting pieces of literature originating from one cultural environment into another, like it or not. & coming to ur point of demographic differences regarding customers, sure they´re there, but at the same time small companies can´t be really expected to make like 15+ versions available, that´s just economical suicide. in case of u no wanting to read a title localized into murrican, don´t blame a murrican company, blame ur own mileu for no founding one itself, btw there apparently being no enough people buying it in ur native language for it to happen.

  33. there´s no making an argument about. ideal localization simply means porting everything to the main target audiences country, or demographic whatever - text, names, cultural shenanigans, etc, then dubbing the audio and releasing a product that has an totally western/african/etc feel to it. those who whine about it being no japanese anymore should just read it in japanese, or shut the fuck up. of course fully localizing a title does no neccessarily mean putting less effort into it, or keeping the costs low - good western va´s do ask for reasonable wages (excluding talentfree bums who usually getting hired), same as any other people involved that rightfully call themselves professionals.- simply translating a title /= fully localizing a title, though both go hand in hand. it´s especially the half-finished jobs done that keep the annoying controversy going, eg. honorifics, unavoidable discrepancy between things heard & things read....
