  2. Hajimemashite! I've started getting into visual novels lately and I'm currently reading Fate/stay night right now. I recently came across this forum and figured I might as well sign up to share my visual novel experience with all of you. Dozo yoroshiku onegaishimasu! (Ah, forgive my awkward Japanese. I had a little bit of self-study.) Anyway, a little bit about myself. I'm a writer, artist, and an obvious weeb. I've been reading light novels for a while now and the most recent one I'm reading is Clockwork Planet, hence the inspiration for my username and icon. Though contrary to my username and icon, I'm not actually a lolicon, but I'll leave that up to you to judge.

  5. Where exactly? I need to move there asap. I remember saying this earlier in some other topic... As much as I like bashing religion and finding things to blame it for, I honesty don't think the sexual taboo originates within the Christian dogma. Sure, Christianity strongly incorporates this repudiation against sexuality, but so do other unrelated religions and cultures throughout the globe, each in their own degree. After all, most peoples exhibit at the very least the shyness to cover up their bodies. Something must be going on in our psyches that's just deeper than "it's just a culturally adquired custom". Of course it still doesn't make any sense, so we should know better than blindly following our instincts.

  6. Well, I wasn't really sure what subsection to put this in but anyway it's still relevant to visual novel talk. This software uses a neural network to recreate censored images. There have been previous similar posts from early versions of this software but it's now actually quite usable. See my post here on reddit: https://new.reddit.com/r/visualnovels/comments/9sjlut/deepcreampy_decensoring_hentai_with_deep_neural/ The long and the short of it is that considering it takes about 10 seconds, it can be used as a starting point for graphic editors to then make a more reasonable decensored image, while still preserving the bulk of the original artist's "impression." No it doesn't look great, but in the absence of original work from the companies, it can be used as the basis for another graphic artist to polish up a decensored version for a localised release. Here's the only sample I've tried it on, NSFW of course: Here're some that others have uploaded:

  11. This is so untrue though. All kinds of media outlets are traditionally involved in the "video games promote violence" fallacy. It's a cyclical source of sensationalist bullshit that has little to do with any kind of ideology, unless it involves scapegoating video games to detract from discussing actual societal issues. It's tabloid journalism above anything else. The pornography and sexual content in media are a prime topic for various consevative lobbies, like the one that celebrated Valve's move against anime games. They don't focus solely on games, but are also very consistent in their demands for censorship (unlike those "SJWs" - stances on pornography are extremely varied within the feminist movenent and its most harsh opponents are a bit of a dying breed). You'll find religious extremists at the frontline of every fight against sexual content and it's sadly that kind of mentality that drives the policies of many companies, especially in the US. Obviously, the left wing critique of female representation is also a factor, but it's not the feminists that dictated the puritanic approach to public representations of sexuality that is still so prevalent in the US. Some of them contribute to the problem, but not with the same consistency social conservatives do.

Exactly the same as my views on episodic traditional video games, which are rather negative. Disregarding the debate on whether or not it's anti-consumer, it kinda comes off to me as just another way of avoiding any kind of financial risk by not fully investing in a complete release. If it flops, just axe plans for any more episodes and move on, leaving customers with an incomplete story that will never be continued. Frontwing in particular, imo, uses episodic releases this way, and it doesn't look all that good. They can apparently afford to fund development of full JP releases, but after they start focusing on western releases they release a flurry of episodic releases with Kickstarter campaigns? Those actions just scream, "I'm confident in the future success of these products", amirite? An arguement that's typically brought up in favor of episodic releases is that it gets the content to the customer sooner than a full release theoretically would have, but I honestly just don't care. My backlog of games, books, TV shows, movies and VNs can quite easily hold me over a longer wait, and even if they couldn't, I'd be fine waiting. I personally don't buy episodic releases of anything until the "full" product is released, which usually means all the older parts are now on sale. I can see why this perk might appeal to other customers, but it's a bit odd in the western VN scene, where there's usually a delay between the original JP release and the EN release. We're pretty used to waiting for pretty much everything at this point lol I don't really care about the pros of the episodic release format, and the cons don't particularly enamor me with it, either.

  14. The most advanced neural network known to science is the human brain, and it can reconstruct images nearly instantly using the power of imagination.

  15. Wew. There is just about no conceivable way I'm picking anyone other than Monster Hunter girl first. You would have to introduce a heroine who's super into Ace Attorney within the next 15 lines to change my mind.

Nah, I don't think that's true - maybe the JP gameplay VNs get translated less often, but there are tons of them. When it goes to EVNs... Well, Long Live The Queen and Magic Diary: Horse Hall by Hanako have fairly extensive gameplay and both are very competent games. X-Note has some minigames and is considered very decent, although I didn't play it. Winter Wolves' RPGs have their sizeable fanbase, but their gameplay is a mixed bag. Planet Stronghold and Loren the Amazon Princess are very clunky, Loren's spin-offs Seasons of the Wolf and Cursed Lands are much better in this regard, but many people liked their stories much less (I actually liked SotW a lot though). In a similar category, there's Sakura Dungeon with its simplistic dungeon crawler mechanics and the neverending stream of fanservice. It's fun and surprisingly well put together though. Last, but not least there are the dating sims... And well, I think RE: Alistair and Backstage Pass by Sakevisual are the only ones I can recommend with a clear conscience. You can maybe add A Little Lily Princess by Hanako to this category, but the stat management there is super basic, mostly just a flavour on top of the story content. EDIT: And maybe also Unhack 2 by InvertMouse should be mentioned - the first Unhack is pretty much a pure puzzle game, but the sequel expanded heavily on the story part. EDIT 2: Oh, and obviously the Sunrider series, although I recommend sticking to the mainline ones, Sunrider Academy has some really tedious dating sim mechanics, if you're really curious about it you'll be better off just watching a plet's play that cuts off all the gameplay parts and gets right to the story.

  17. I wanted to thank both of you for sharing your interest in the demo. ^^ I realized today that I can still improve a couple of things in the scenes that are a part of the demo itself so I won't share it right away, but I should be able to post it here during the weekend - unless a cataclysm will strike my hardware : )

  19. Currently I am doing this list as well as monthly physical visual novel news and reviews of VNs that I own physical copies of where I also show the physical edition as well as pictures covering my entire physical VN collection. I wonder if there is any other content focusing on physical VNs I could do that would be interesting and raise awareness for physical copies so if anyone has any suggestions please tell me. With physical sales so low that MG only does physicals for VNs that sell quite well and Nekonyansoft only doing physicals for their largest titles while their other titles are undecided I hope some of the content I make will make it so that the physical sales are better so that more VNs also release in physical format and not only digital format, well that is at least my aim though I doubt it makes much of a difference.

  20. I generally buy physical copies from Japan, not TLed games, so the EMS costs gets me. I have bought some games from MG in the past, and the shipping there wasn't too bad. Though, it does depend on the site, whether I use a third party shipper and so on. But yeah, I meant when ordering tokutens from Japan, not games from western publishers.

  21. And with that, two out of my three favorite VNs have recieved butchered "localizations." ChuSinGura was first, Kimisora second. (If SakuraGame touches Chrono Box I swear...) I'm also a huge fan of the Soleil series from Skyfish, and have been hoping to either see it handled by a big company like MG, JAST etc who can do it justice, or perhaps even to work on it myself. But I guess there's a decently big chance freaking SakuraGame will butcher those games too now... *sigh* Y u do dis...

    Happy Halloween

Am I the only one that finds Halloween obnoxious, similarly to Christmas? Not as a concept, I mean, but through the fact it jumps at you from every corner for a full month or more until you're completely sick of it? ... Did I tell you guys how I'm very fun at parties?
