  1. I kind of wish they hadn't done this. "Illegal or trolling" is too low a baseline for admission onto the world's probably most influential and popular video game marketplace. It's this very stance that got games literally about shooting LGBT+ people and the like onto Steam. (And the fact that Valve removes (some) of such games upon public outcry doesn't redeem its appearance on the store in the first place.) It's too easy to disseminate bigoted content this way, and all Valve needed to do was to create a policy that says "Games made for the purpose of mocking a(n oppressed) demographic, or games that endorse such content, are not allowed on Steam.". Steam is not the entire internet. If someone's just fucking dying to distribute racist, homophobic or sexist games, there are other avenues. Steam doesn't have to, and in my opinion, mustn't give a platform to such games. Steam isn't responsible for giving every single game a fair chance. And, of course, any actual quality vetting policy would also catch the myriad asset flips, barebones Unity turds, shovelware and copyright-infringing works. But I'm honestly more miffed about the political angle (a game called Feminazi: The Triggering doesn't really have a right to be put on the Steam storefront).

For those of you out of the loop, a couple of years ago @TexasDice (known for never changing his avatar,) made a thread stating that he would use a different avatar for X* weeks, IF Maitetsu would recieve an uncut 18+ release. He thought this would never happen. Hah. Well, jokes on him, because it is happening. (This month.) * He is going to use the new avatar for 1 week for each user who bet against him. The number of people is 19, so he will be using it for 19 weeks. The people who bet against him: So, this brings us to the point of this thread. Like Texas stated in his thread, the avatar he'll be using will be chosen by the community in the form of a poll. So, let's get some suggestions in here, then we can make a poll with the suggestions and pick a beautiful avatar for him! Just remember that the avatar needs to comply with Fuwanovel's avatar guidelines. So keep the memes within those rules.

    Thank you for your recommendations I prefer playing visual novels without sexual content, emotional story, comedy, slice of life...(horror games too but if it's really a good game).

  9. There aren't masterpieces this month. My personal favorite is San Shimai due to it being my first visual novel, but I rate DIES IRAE even higher and nominate it for VN of the Month. 1. Exciting Milk Dai 1 Wa エキサイティングみるく第1話 [960201] Silence 22nd century. Humanity is prospering through the expansion of the Earth's development, but natural destruction has also become extreme. One day Amon, a scientist who opposed the destruction of nature, decided to return to the Earth 150 years earlier via time machine and protect nature. Police opposed that as it could bring unknown changes and followed Amon. In the 20th century school girl Kurumi heard from a classmate that an aircraft landed in the forest and went alone to the forest out of curiosity. Milk is a police officer from future who landed in the forest colliding with Kurumi. As a result of the collision Kurumi body was seriously hurt and her soul was placed into Milk body until full recovery. Now Kurumi transforms to Milk at wilk and back by wearing glasses. Will she find Amon? Game's fully animated as other Silence works. But it's even shorter than previous animated games barely exceeding 10 minutes time. There's just one fighting scene and it all ends with Amon coming to Kurumi class as transfer student. Looking forward to part 2. 2. Angel Crysis エンジェルクライシス [960209] ZyX 1 You're part of an all female crew on a ship exploring some planet and the crew picks up a mysterious cargo crate from an underwater ruin. There's an English review that tells us all that we need to know about this borderline work. And there was exactly a tentacle monster in the crate... 3. Guernica ゲルニカ [960209] Backspin 1 2 3 Long time ago, human passions caused the appearance of a monster tribe that has since become unwelcome in the human society. Years of bitter antagonism and violence followed as humans settled in the land of Galesnia. A thousand years later, a simple warrior named Grog enters a forest inhabited by monsters, and becomes gradually involved in a struggle that puts him in the forefront of the defense of Galesnia. Fish shop holder to the rescue of the world! The guy was sleeping peacefully when at night the "Apostle of Salvation" child appeared before him saying that the barrier started to weaken and will be destroyed in 13 days and only Grog can prevent that! Quite a simple rpg with only 13 lvls and basic stats. You can hold up to 10 recovery items and you get one every time you visit an inn or hitting a bed. Game is linear. So it's not the brightest species of RPG breed. 4. Persona ~Ingyaku no Kamen~ ペルソナ ~淫虐の仮面~ [960209] Sorciere 1 A series of gruesome murders shocks Japan. Young women are kidnapped, tortured, and killed under mysterious circumstances... The protagonist wakes up in what looks like a hospital, but is in fact a special psychiatric facility on a space station. The hero doesn't remember anything, not even his name. Three young women - Shelly, Elisa, and Aoka - will help him to find his memory, and he will gradually realize who he is and what is his mission. You need to regain your memory within 38 hours or the space station explodes. What's the best way to regain memories? I guess Japanese have their unique opinion on that. There are parameters of the hero and depending on numbers one of five protagonist personalities show up. Yes, he has a deep personality disorder and can be anything from a good guy to a sadist. Time also ticking so it's a nice rush factor. There are basically just three rooms on the spaceship. So it's an original system and is not necessarily an eroge if you play out as a good guy and aim for the happy ending that does not even have a H-scene. 5. Valentine Kiss: Birthdays 2 バレンタインキッス ~バースデイズ2~ [960209] Silky's 1 Valentine Kiss is a dating simulation game, very similar to Birthdays, only instead of "conquering" a girl as a birthday present, the goal here is to "score" on Valentine's Day Second installation of a difficult sim that's memorable to me mostly by the fact that it's Silky's game and not a full-scale eroge. UI is still charming but it came from the prequel with minor changes. Quite few things changed actually and some even degenerated like the number of heroines dropped from 8 to 4. Main difference though is that while prequel was just hard everyday work to earn love, this work has events in ADV mode and all your hard work is useless unless you flag events properly. Still the freshness is lost since it has been two years since the prequel and not much changed. 6. DIES IRAE DIES IRAE [960215] Family Soft 1 2 Heroines Kim and her side partners Kris and Lee are professional detectives and they have very opposite personalities. Kim on one hand is very cheerful and lively all the time, Kris is very serious and quiet. They are investigating a murder case that ends up being a much bigger issue, revolving gang members, the mafia and later on some sci-fi elements. There's a nice English review that sheds light on this curious game. 7. Kanako 香奈子 [960223] Red Zone 1 Kanako is a young woman who has just graduated from college and is in a desperate need of a job. Finally, she is invited to a job interview in a large and successful company. However, the boss seems to ask too many personal questions and generally looks at Kanako in a weird way. After she has been introduced to her duties at the new place, Kanako decides to get to know the employees better, and in process learns their most intimate secrets... Red Zone inevitably means ero-centered work. But graphics are nice and win version is fully voiced, even the thoughts of the heroine - that was unexpected and captivating. Her thoughts is the most funny part in the game as she comments emotionally on many occasions. 8. Magical Girl Pretty Sammy Kouhen 魔法少女プリティサミー 後編 [960223] AIC Spirits Game includes two remaining episodes: Episode 3. Friends Episode 4. Leave it to Sammy! A direct continuation of the first part, but not hookable 9. Shadowrun シャドウラン [960223] Compile Co., Ltd. 1 2 3 4 5 6 It is twenty-first century, and the humanity faces a difficult period that follows devastating wars and other disasters. Magic and technology co-exist, supernatural powers, mythical creatures, ghosts, cyberspace, where hackers meet and fight each other, street deckers which can be hired to do the dirty work, anarchy and struggle between mighty and corrupt corporations - this is the world of Shadowrun. Unlike the two other Shadowrun games which are set in Seattle, according to tradition, Shadowrun for Sega CD is set in the futuristic city of Neo Tokyo. The player controls a party of characters with different backgrounds: the street samurai Rikudo, the shaman girl Mao, the decker (a hired mercenary) D-Head (who also happens to be an elf), and Shiun, a former member of a mighty corporation. Their first assignment is to hunt down a ghostly warrior who has been disturbing a segment of the city for quite some time. As the player begins their investigation they plunge deeper into the dark world of intrigues and find themselves fighting on different fronts. There are several great English reviews and there even might be a fan English translation according to some materials. 10. Escape! エスケイプ! [960229] May-Be Soft 1 In Escape, the player assumes the role of an ordinary teenager named Root. He is returning from a long journey, and just beyond the mountain, he can see his house. But fate had other plans for the boy: one step on the wrong stone, and Root falls through a dark pit into the underground world. Looks like it won't be simple for him to find the way home, because this world is populated by girls, each one of which wants something from him... I've only seen Windows version and it's very simplified and plays like a normal visual novel with only occasionally choosing locations on the map. Characters are nice, but the story lacks excitement and all the time is spent underground. A fine game, but far from masterpiece level. 11. Kara no Naka no Kotori 殻の中の小鳥 [960229] Black Package 1 Foster, formerly a trainer of high-class prostitutes for a secret political group that used these girls to exert power over politicians, has has long been out of the game, as he and his cohorts were busted years back. However, Foster couldn't help himself and soon returned to his old profession. He began training new maidens, though this time with a distinctly evil bent, drawing the recruits into a sordid ring of discipline and bondage. Maid slave training SIM. Main difference is that training is done in the form of a card game in an attempt to simplify SIM part. 12. San Shimai 三姉妹 [960229] JAST 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 The one that started it all! I was just a boy when my father threw himself under the tracks of an oncoming train on the Yamanote Line in Tokyo. He had been the president of a powerful trading company, but had been under siege by an enemy in a power struggle that I didn't understand at the time. With my father gone, it fell upon my mother to lead the family and try to pay off Father's debts. She wasn't up to the task, and was buried next to my father less than a year later. My older brother Eiichi and I were separated, then, passed around the family like unwanted guests. We had lost everything. Last summer Eiichi appeared again on my doorstep. He had prospered in the years since I'd seen him, and had built a successful trading company. "Koichi," he said to me, "I found out who was responsible for our father's death: the current head of father's old company, Shoji Okamura." When he asked me, "Will you help me avenge mother and father?" I agreed immediately. So I became his hatchet man. My job was to approach the Okamura family, especially the three Okamura sisters -- sexy, grown-up Yuki, short-tempered but sensitive Emi and the innocent Risa -- and gather information on the Okamuras for my brother. After six months, I had gotten to where I was eating dinner at their house regularly. This allowed me to bug Shoji's office take documents out of his trash, and copy files off his computer. I reported everything to my brother faithfully. I was never sure if the information I was providing was doing any good, but gradually, it became apparent that Shoji Okamura's business was failing. He grew more and more desperate, and one day he disappeared completely. The happiness of the Okamura family, who had taken so much from us, had been stolen piece by piece. My brother swore he wouldn't stop until Shoji Okamura was driven to the point of taking his own life, even if it meant pushing the Three Sisters into lives of prostitution and worse. The only problem is, I had fallen in love with those same three sisters... Game has many English reviews

  10. Routes - the most unique aspect of visual novels. Ability to choose your own story and how it ends is what distinguishes VNs from other formats. Each VN can have from 1 to dozen endings. So I thought it would be fun to know what are your top 3/5/7/10 favorite route+ending combinations and why. Note, don't forget spoilers where necessary. My top 7: Umineko Magic end - brilliant ending for my favorite VN. From themes to music and execution - I found everything perfect. Steins Gate true end - same as above Dies Irae Marie and Rea - loved both routes. Because of these 2 routes and endings DI became my favorite battle royal. Though battles were better in Rea's route, I liked Marie more as heroine. Baldr Sky dive - Sora. Loved how everything was connected in the end. Concepts and execution were great to. Silverio Vendetta - Vendetta. It is a rare case where chuunige actually fulfills and actually adapts things it borrows from legends this well. Zephyr in this route became one of my favorite MC of VNs of all time. Vendetta was a great heroine as well. F/SN Realta Nua/Avalon end. Loved the narration.

    TWO WEEKS AGO: Some bananas happened and then tymmur was murdered and our heroes were too powerless to do something about it because I couldn't write this chapter sooner. "At least we could strengthen our friendship in the meantime..." contemplated Dreamysyu, sitting in the corridor alongside Dergonu, Mitchnomi and Ranzo. The last time we saw them, they were staring the cursed gif looping at the monitor at classroom 2-B. If they were still staring at it, two weeks later, by now they would have nor eyes nor brains nor anything, as every cell of their body would be as pulverized as an unlucky member of the Avengers. Instead, they got the hell out of the room and decided to have a picnic in the corridor. It was enough time for them to max out all Social Links between themselves, while doing aaaaaaaall the things that good close male friends do together, like drink beer, have sex with each other, tell inside jokes, karaoke, a blood pact and read the h-scenes of euphoria. Actually, scratch that, Ranzo was the only one singing. They started with Bleeding Eyes by Masterplan, but after seeing Rinne's enema h-scene, they're now stuck with a looping Suicide Song by Hatsune Miku. "Maaaaan, that was good! But I think we're supposed to do something else now..." pondered Dergonu.   14. Yeah the difficulty spike into 30 and then 40 is pretty big, but once you can start farming 40 you will be in the clear. I'll add you after I'm done my meetings. And it's fine...I have every servant so I don't even use supports much. Most of my friends are lower level players anyways. Yeah I ended up playing quite a while with support servants and ended up being annoyed because I wanted to make a team of, say, arts team based but friend servants didn't fit what I wanted. Then after watching a G&A Review video I saw them switch servants around and I went "AWW HELL NAW WHY DID I NOT KNOW THIS!" Almost know one I knew knew this either lol. I played during launch so...my servants were usually the OP ones on the NA server, but I kept them in the back so that I could play with who I wanted, and if I was close to losing I would have that clutch servant in the back. Also, work on Cu when you get him, dude is a beast.

  18. Congrats, Drake is a fantastic Rider, waifu material and a bro. Couldn't ask for a better rider honestly. Her skills are fantastic and her NP is great as well. Aside from the lack of single target NP she is a fantastic Rider. Herc is pretty much a 5* in disguise so having him will pretty much make you set for the game, he can continuously smash through everything. I would recommend Ascending him first to get his skills ASAP. Don't worry about the cost, you will get enough easily later. Did I already add you? Leader position does nothing really, currently you ONLY need a support servant, the Leader is just the first servant in the slot you have. I honestly would have preferred being able to use only my own servants and at that being able to only use 1 specifically (would love soloing the game without the stupid gimmicks now needed to do it). If you didn't already know (as it took me time for me to find out) you can move the support servant to the back row and rearrange servants around allowing you to have your first 3 servants being your own.

  20. No one ever said anything about removal of 18+ guidelines and clearly Steam wrote they are still in effect. What this does change though, is that it might potentially allow uncut 18+ products on Steam in the nearest future, as long as they abide by the guidelines. Steam is based in Washington, so all the games released on Steam with 18+ content will still have to abide by their laws. This means - amongst other things - no loli/shota porn or other borderline content, like bestiality etc. They will probably continue to monitor and ensure some sort of quality in terms of games allowed to go, but they won't put any restrictions on available content, as long as it doesn't break laws. I presume Steam will still want to include some sort of tags or centralized space to actually include all the 18+ products, if that happens, out for clarity's sake.

    You see, it isn't exactly that I was THAT lucky. I used Nox with 4 instances running (my poor laptop can't handle more lol) and a macro to automatize the process. I kept it running for 8 hours a day for 3 days, at a pace of 4 rerolls per hour, 32 rerolls per day, so 96 rerolls in total. I looked at this list: https://grandorder.gamepress.gg/5-star-tier-list to know which servants are considered good. I would accept any placed tier 3 or above. Let's count those who are available at the story summon: Francis Drake, Tamamo-no-Mae, Zhugen Liang, Jack the Ripper, so 4. Each one has 0.076% chance, according to the summoning info in-game, so 0,304% chance of pulling either of those. Using a binomial distribution, you get that the probability of getting any of those in 96 rolls is 25%. Still lucky, I'll admit, but it's not like I did a yolo summon and got a good SSR

I hope you enjoy it. *** Feeling too pansy to continue SH2 tonight, I decided to spend some time with Prey and it was 3AM before I know it. Holy shit, it's even better than I expected, easily my favorite first person game of all time if this keeps up. More than five hours in, there are a measly 4 enemy types (2 of which were introduced in the last hour) and that's just about the only criticism I could have for this game, and even that is offset by just how many ways there are to take out those two types. Repeatedly throw a computer at them, shoot a pipe and burn them down, turn them into crafting materials with a grenade, the list goes on. It's magnificent.

Well, it would be easier to give you concrete recommendations if you specified what exactly you seek from VNs. I guess, I'm going to second the recommendation for Grisaia no Kajitsu, since it's a more beginner-friendly VN, and while I personally wouldn't call it exceptional on itself, it's simply pretty well done. Another VN often mentioned in the recommendation threads for beginners is Ever 17. As for otome games, I only played two of them, but Cinderella Phenomenon is pretty good and I'm definitely going to recommend it.

  30. Before people smarter than me can elaborate, I think I can pinpoint basic elements. To make a VN you typically need: 1. A game engine (most likely Ren'Py, which is free and have a lot of guides and assets available for it) 2. A graphical user interface (GUI), through which people will interact with your game - Ren'Py provides a basic structure for your GUI, but custom visuals and ability to modify the UI according to your needs is important. 3. Background graphics - static images over which character sprites and the GUI will appear. I think it's easy to find free or cheap stock VN backgrounds. 4. Character sprites - the representations of the characters involved in your story - static 2D images, usually with a few poses and face expressions to fit different situations. 5. CGs - custom, full-screen illustrations which show situations that are hard to present through sprites and text, usually used in crucial moments of the story. 6. Background music - to give your game a proper climate and make it less monotonous, underlining the switches in mood etc. 7. A script - all the dialogues and descriptions that will show in the text box (which is a part of the GUI), along with necessary "stage directions" [especially if you'll not be the one handling the programming, the person doing it must know what background, expressions etc. go with each scene]. 8. (optional) Voice Acting/Voiced Narration - expensive as f***, if you want good quality, so many developers skip on it. 9. (Optional) Other sound assets - depending on the content of your story, some additional sounds could be useful, for example if you want bring the reader's attention to something, but often such additions are quite obnoxious - music can be enough. When you have a script and all the necessary assets, you have to put them together and synchronise them properly. This part I know pretty much nothing about, as I'm not a programmer. ------ 20 edits later - Did I miss anything?

  31. I don't think it's really possible nowadays, depending on what and how much do you want to add. Old games arten't any comparison of sorts - they didn't weight much mostly because they operated in ultra low resolutions and very limited color pallettes, had no voice overs and music was limited to a couple midi/fm/mod tunes at most. As much as those games could easily fit onto a couple old floppy disks, modern games work on much higher parameters and as such, their requirements grew exponentially. Obviously, you will want that, because it's considered a standard for nowadays software (32bit graphics with at least 720p resolution output + full mouse and keyboard support), that allows decent enough experience and ease of use. It is still possible to create lightweight games, albeit that would require some knowledge on how to optimally reduce the filesizes of your games assets and/or utilize techniques, that allow massive reduction of space and little to no cost in terms of quality degradation. You might be interested to check out Ren'Py. As much as it probably won't be possible to fit a game under 5 megabytes (due to it's shared libraries, that are required to run games), you can still make games, that won't weight more than 25-50 megabytes at most (depending on how much content you'd like to fit). Creating retro-esque games are one such possibility. such games (or software in general) mimic the old hardware limitations from an aesthetic/visual standpoint, which in end makes them much more lightweight and less demanding in terms of required computing power (as such, they can potentially work on much older/slower computers without any discernible performance loss). Anything below would probably require you to switch to either one of self-sufficient web-based engines (as Palas mentioned above), or resign from advanced sound environment and modern, high-res graphics. In other words - a text based game.

The specific example I'm referring to is Working designs renaming one of the cooler-looking characters in its game localization of Dragon Force for the Saturn Reiner, after the Game Informer reviewer that was set to review it (who always reviewed the jrpgs of the time). It was amusing back then, but it was something of a premonition of what was to come, looking at it in retrospect. Also, keep in mind that 'popularity' just means it is mainstream for the medium. Polls are worse than useless when it comes to judging more niche genres like utsuge or chuunige inside the first year or so. Fanboys of those niches are starved of their favorites, so they'll, quite naturally, rate them higher than they deserve in a lot of cases. It is only years down the road that you can really judge them, sadly.

My favorite video game is Mass Effect 2 (ironically, since I generally prefer turn-based combat to real-time) and the other two main trilogy games are also pretty high up there. 80 Days is my personal favorite piece of interactive fiction (I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say it's a VN, even if it does have its own VNDB page). My favorite VNs that I've read so far are Butterfly Soup and Digital: A Love Story. eden* is really good too. Other games I like include (in no particular order) Final Fantasy X; The Away Team; Chrono Trigger; Bastion; Papers, Please; Knights of the Old Republic; the Dragon Age series; To Be or Not to Be; Undertale; The World Ends With You; and Remember Me. I also have a soft spot for the writing in Fallen London, even though I don't quite have the patience to play it regularly... (I own Sunless Sea but haven't gotten to it yet. Story of my goddamn life.)
