  4. Honestly there are several interesting VNs released originally in Chinese and idk if there's a single fan translation of one of those out there. Rather than working on JP->EN translation, CN->EN seems like a much more productive use of your time, not to mention that the average quality of cn>en vn tls that we have gotten has been pretty low too so standards might be different.

  6. Grammarly really wouldn't help much at all. A lot of King Exit's text is so horribly mangled that Grammarly wouldn't know what to do with it. And it takes someone halfway decent at English to look at the suggestions and decide which ones are worth implementing and which ones aren't. Grammarly will frequently want to change perfectly acceptable informal English dialogue, for example, so I can only imagine the dumb suggestions it would give for a mangled machine translation. In general, the only real use I've found for Grammarly in translation work (with proper translations) is for finding double and missing words. I would also argue that not all of the problems with SakuraGame's translations are grammar-related. There's a lot more to good English writing than proper grammar. Even if Grammarly could fix all of the grammar, it would still probably be a terrible translation not worth reading unless an actual decent editor came along and gave an extremely thorough editing pass. But you don't want to do that when the base translation is potentially inaccurate, and I really don't trust these translations to be accurate. Even if they get the broad strokes, they're missing so much of the smaller details, tone, and personality. So really, SakuraGame's translations need to be thrown in the trash and incinerated, never to be seen again. Trying to help them improve is a fool's errand.

  8. EGS scores matter for long-term sales. Usually, the top EGS game for any given month will get a boost in sales for the month after and for the year to come, so companies that actually have a decent war chest are willing to invest in fake voting to skew the polls. Getchu's verified purchase rankings are a bit more reliable, though. Edit: Just to add some perspective... there are a ton of charage companies out there. The market in Japan reached saturation point years ago, and as a result, the competition between moege companies is fierce over there. Companies that produce different types of non-nukige have their own niches and use other methods to increase profits, and companies like Saga Planets that have a naturally strong presence don't need to resort to that (because their games usually sell themselves). However, the companies that all pretty much produce games that look, feel, and read the same... inevitably are competing directly against one another.

  9. I stress the word "ever" so it is irrelevant if any VN published to date qualifies. This is meant as a hypothetical question of if VN would ever be in the same league as fiction, play, poetry etc as serious literature. Granted it is a commercial product and the script alone won't make a good VN just as a film is not defined solely by its play. But we have made enough assumptions so we may as well neglect the real world. If this is too void to discuss, I can paraphrase it: Does Stein's Gate deserve a Nebula Award if it was published as a fiction? I would personally say it amassed more fame than most science fiction, though I am aware of being misleading. Unable to add more, I pass the time to the more informed and perspicuous.

    Dank-a-Ronpa Ch.3

TWO WEEKS AGO: Some bananas happened and then tymmur was murdered and our heroes were too powerless to do something about it because I couldn't write this chapter sooner. "At least we could strengthen our friendship in the meantime..." contemplated Dreamysyu, sitting in the corridor alongside Dergonu, Mitchnomi and Ranzo. The last time we saw them, they were staring the cursed gif looping at the monitor at classroom 2-B. If they were still staring at it, two weeks later, by now they would have nor eyes nor brains nor anything, as every cell of their body would be as pulverized as an unlucky member of the Avengers. Instead, they got the hell out of the room and decided to have a picnic in the corridor. It was enough time for them to max out all Social Links between themselves, while doing aaaaaaaall the things that good close male friends do together, like drink beer, have sex with each other, tell inside jokes, karaoke, a blood pact and read the h-scenes of euphoria. Actually, scratch that, Ranzo was the only one singing. They started with Bleeding Eyes by Masterplan, but after seeing Rinne's enema h-scene, they're now stuck with a looping Suicide Song by Hatsune Miku. "Maaaaan, that was good! But I think we're supposed to do something else now..." pondered Dergonu. Mitchnomi could have explained the rules about the investigation about now, since they were one of the higher ups, and also a bear, but sadly they died of hepatitis B after the blood pact part. "Oh yeah, we gotta investigate tymmur's murder! Rest in peace, man..." said Dreamysyu, putting his main character cape once again. With that, they enter the crime scene once again to see... ...KURISU-CHAN WATCHING STEINS;GATE 0! "...Wait, what? Here too?" "Yeah, I noticed that no one was using this room so I invited Kenshin to a two-weeks-long anime marathon consisting of the original S;G and all the released S;G 0 episodes." explained Kurisu. "I thought that you did your hackerman thing everywhere but here..." me too, Dergonu. "That was right, so I went back in time and fixed that." "...Wait, at least you saved tymmur, or any of us, while you did that???" "They saved ME, because now I finally catch up with S;G 0!" replied Kenshin, making Dreamysyu feel a bit NTRed. "Actually tymmur is right here." pointed Ranzo to the same chair tymmur was last time. Still dead tho. "But if the screen now is showing only S;G 0 reruns, what killed him in this timeline?" "The same thing, I'm afraid. Check his phone, someone PMed him the thing." said Dreamysyu, quickly averting his gaze before their eyes exploded. "Looks like this fic needs the Meaningless Choices tag, 'cause whatever we do, we can't save tymmur." said Senior, creepily appearing behind them. The rest soon followed, led by an angry Maggiekuma trying to put the story back on track. "Jumping Christ, I tried to make a Corpse Discovery Announcement but I couldn't even access my own system! I knew I should have put Nayleen in this fic... Oh well, guess I'll have to explain it in person. As I weebly explained last time... do you guys even remember it?" "How could we forget?" said Zander, proudly covering his war scars. "Gotcha, the thing is, someone is trying to leave this place sacrificing all the remaining students. Sooo what you guys are waiting for? Foil his plan! If the murderer doesn't get away with it, they alone will be punished. The clock's ticking, so let's start this scavenger hunt for clues! No murder is perfect after all, so look for some fingerprints or whatever." Maggiekuma's limited knowledge about detective stuff is somewhat sad. "Playing games after one of our mates met such a fate... This is indeed remarkably sick..." Poltroon expressed his disgust. "Everything for the views!" "I would like to ask how many minutes will we have for this task, but it's probably an indeterminate amount that will end conveniently after all clues were found." Fiddle correctly said. "Yeah, works for me! Also, here. ZA MAGGIEKUMA FAIRU! 'All info you couldn't possibly discover just investigating' edition! I'll leave it at the main character's hand! Now, happy hunting!~" Maggiekuma outed. "Even if we didn't start anything here, I would like to say that batman is the most suspicious one here. He is always using gifs here after all." littleshogun gave their opinion. "Bitch please, that's clearly not barbaric enough to be something made by my hand!" "I would say that Kenshin is the most suspicious actually. They appeared here out of nowhere and not many people here have a cell phone with them..." Ranzo continued with the distrusting one another atmosphere for the hell of it. "But they have a strong alibi, AKA me." Kurisu didn't want to lose a fellow Steins;Gater. "How do we even remember what happened in other timelines?" pondered Virgin, but not really, since he hardly cares anymore. "( ̄`Д´ ̄)9" Kiri tried to help clearing Kenshin's suspicion, showing that they have a cell phone as well. And surprisingly, no one started to suspect them, as everyone agreed that Kiri only use his phone to play Kirikoi, tweet and other moe stuff. "Guys, instead of trying to guess who's the killer, how about we start investigating? The correct answer will appear naturally then." Lesiak made everyone shut the fuck up. "I'm with you. I'm with this feeling... that the cause of his death isn't what it seems. It looks more that all of this... it's just to confuse us." Dreamysyu's not wrong, this fic is hardly cohesive. "They'll try to push drugs that keep us all dumbed down and hope that we will never see the truth around!" So come on! Oh yeah, this one I can sing along! "I'll help you investigate. Mystery is right up my alley." Virgin suggested a partnership. "Oh, let me join too! Just give me a minute to look for the choice that let me join your party!" since it'll take quite some time for Senior to skip his black bible of choices, let's just focus on what the other guys are doing. "First, let's read the Maggikuma File. EVERYONE, GATHER HERE!" and they did so. "Okay. Name of the victim: tymmur. Time of death: around 11 AM. Age: 79 (maybe more, since he's a wizard). Height: 1,80 cm. Orientation: homosexual. Favorite Musumaker h-scene..." Dreamysyu blue screened for a while. "...What any of this have to do with the investigation...?" "Better look at the body directly." Virgin tried to steal Dreamysyu's spotlight, when both of them were alone again. "I prefer to collect some testimonies first." "And why's that?" "Everyone's fictional counterpart in this story is fucking stupid, someone will probably spill the beans if pressured." "Fair." "Let's start with Clephas." "Are you suggesting that I, the Lord of the JOPs, would mingle with you, inferior beings? And just for a senseless slaughter that fails to appease even goddesses such as Ishtar?" Clephas had a point, I don't think Musumaker's h-scenes would please a goddess of sexuality. Since Clephas knew way more h-scenes than Dreamysyu or Virgin, they just leave it to him to calm the gods and kept investigating. "Let's talk with Poltroon now." "..." Poltroon brilliantly said. "What are you even doing, man?" "Honoring the memory of our fallen comrade. Let me dedicate this moment of silence to him." "..." "..." "..." "Dude, it's way past one minute now." "For someone such as tymmur, one minute is not enough. Not a single one of his lines would fit in that interval." "...That's something the Ultimate Gentleman would do, I suppose." said Dreamysyu and Virgin at the same time, as they left him alone and went to talk with the others. "Sigh... This is going nowhere..." Dreamysyu was trying hard to stay positive. "Let's see what we do have. Dergonu, Ranzo and you were together so all of you have alibis. Kenshin and Kurisu have alibis as well. Fiddle said himself, he's the final boss, so I don't think he would try something as early as chapter 3. Kiri seems harmless, but they play moege, suspicious af. Batman and Clephas would probably do something more barbaric than this. I'm not the culprit and that's true 'cause I'm always right. That leaves us with Lesiak, shogun, Blitz, Poltroon, and Zander. Of all of those, Zander is the most suspicious." "Are they? I can't remember them doing anything strange..." "Just look at him!" "Despite my ear damage last chapter, and the damage that my brain sustains every time I found a grammatical error in this mess, I can hear you quite well, Virgin." speaking of the devil. "Whatever. What are you so-not-suspiciously doing?" "I'm investigating the body." "Huh? Someone actually listened to my idea???" Virgin thought that was pure madness. "...Enough with the hearing puns." "Anyway. Did you find something out?" "Oh, most certainly! Look at his feet!" "I prefer hips, myself." I'll let you choose who said this. "Not like that! Look, they're stuffed right into a bucket full of water together with this electric wire. Thoughts?" "I knew the gif was only a distraction! It was a false flag all along!!" Dreamysyu, for the first time in a while, thought that the fic is finally making some sense. "Actually, the gif was a big fucking clue, since it was a vibrating gif of an anime girl being electrocuted. A goof from the murderer, most likely." "Why no one noticed this before????? And why only his eyes exploded????? What kinda electrocution is that????" Virgin thought otherwise. "Probably because this development was rushed for the views or for the feels or whatever, making it as poorly planned as the game night of someone going through a KEY VN without a walkthrough." salt is the main reason batman worked alone. "...Want me to take some pictures to use as evidence?" Kenshin wanted to be helpful. "Oh, do that! It's pretty much the only clue I found here." "...The ONLY clue?" "So. It is time." Fiddle eerily prophesied. "I finally found the choice! I just don't understand why I'll join the party if I say "Panties ahoy!" to Kiri..." I think people hardly care about it now, Senior. "Ding ding ding, TAIMU APU!" announced Maggiekuma over the monitor, that plotholely was again under their command. "Now hurry your asses over here!" and the asses went there. NEXT TIME: The first trial! Place your bets now, who killed tymmur? "..." and that was the sound of Poltroon, still in silence. "Enjoy the silence..." sang Ranzo, like any other chapter ending.

  12. This is the latest charage from Hearts, a company specializing in 'yurufuwa' charage with nakige elements. This company's works have a tendency to make me want to puke waves of sugar, but, in my experience, this is one of the better 'yurufuwa' companies out there. This game focuses on a kind-hearted young man named Harutoki Narumi as he suddenly (and by accident) summons a high-level spirit named Haruharu, and, as a result, he gets dragged into the world of witches and magic users whose duty is to keep the balance of nature by conversing with such spirits. Narumi is generally your classic 'good guy' protagonist that everyone at least likes, and this VN doesn't have any real confrontations in the sense that you might see in another VN, so he doesn't really have a combative side at all. Haruharu is the spirit Narumi summoned, a generally cheerful and lively young woman who lives in the moment and is driven obsessively to help others. Her spirited and cheery manner generally warms the hearts of those around her, and it is hard even for me not to like her, since she is basically like an embodiment of pure good with no negative elements whatsoever (except a lack of modesty, if you use some standards, lol). Kazane is an iinchou-type who is the head of the Garden Club, which serves as a front for the activities of the school's small community of witches (the heroines and the protagonist, essentially). She is ambitious, in the sense that she wants to be a Grand Witch, but her essential nature is that of a person who can't help but want to help others (seeing a pattern here? hahaha). Mashiro is your classic fushigi-chan genius... the most skilled (versus Haruharu being the most talented) of the heroines in magic, she always has a high-level cat spirit named Bastet riding on her head. Despite her brief period as a seeming kuudere (it ends almost immediately) she is, in fact, just as much as a goodie-goodie as Kazane and Haruharu, and her only really unusual quality is her sense of humor. I'd be tempted to call Mikana a dojikko, in any other VN... but Hearts really hates to include negative personality traits in its heroines, so she just happens to be the least skilled of the heroines. She likes baking and is generally a sweetheart and something of an innocent... and just like all the other heroines, she likes helping people (it is almost amusing that they unified the heroines to this degree, lol). Now, the charage of this VN has a lot of cheap feels and cuteness... and that is pretty much all there is. The girls and Narumi go around solving minor issues (not incidents) while practicing their power to speak to the spirits of the world, and generally you can expect that any event is either going to result in some kind of low-level emotional scene or lots of cuteness. Given the fact that it was well-written and paced enough to affect me, I have to wonder how the people who eat this up will feel playing this. The heroine routes... are all about at the same level. Oh, Haruharu's route is the most emotional by far, but I can honestly say that the routes are basically extensions of what I experienced in the common route... lots of low-level feels and cuteness, with h-scenes added in. I'm not saying this is a bad thing... if anything, this game is pure crack for the lovers of the genre. If you want a low-stress, cute as a fuzzy bunny game, this one is ideal. I will say that you should probably leave Haruharu's route for last... since the feels leading into her ending are the best in the VN. However, I can also say that you could probably play this game just for Haruharu's route and come out feeling quite satisfied if you like the genre. Given my tastes, I'll probably forget this game ever existed by the end of next month, but I felt a need to mark that this game is a rare ideal production for those with a taste for the fuzzy-feely and adorable.

  15. No. Hell no. There are two main reasons: 1. The less controversial reason is simply that visual novels are not popular enough. They barely have an international audience as it stands, not to mention the borderline nonexistent non-Japanese VN development industry. Besides being dominated by a single language/country/culture/market, they aren't in text form like plays or poetry can be. They're software. Visual novels are an exceedingly young genre (particularly outside Japan), and as such don't have an established tradition (though they do have tropes) and they thus don't really reflect different cultures or have distinct schools of thought. The fact that you need -at the very least- a capable: 1. composer 2. programmer 3. writer 4. artist for a given visual novel hurts these chances too. For a novel, you need an author and an editor. Give them two years. Done. Not so simple for a visual novel. 2. The genre simply isn't mature or serious enough. The vast majority of VNs out there, like many anime, go for a non-ambitious slice of life or romantic comedy story. If not that, they tend to stick to many anime/manga tropes on top of the genre's tropes on its own. I'm talking about how the choices-influence-storyline idea is almost always used as skill/luck/walkthrough usage checks for getting into a girl's p-p-panties~. I'm talking about the overwhelming usage of anime/manga styling and characters (all your -dere). And when a VN does get popular for something except cute anime girls, it's more often than not for action or suspense or murder mystery (F/SN, Steins; Gate, Umineko). This doesn't mean they automatically lack merit (Umineko is one of the most emotional and profound visual novels out there and it has sideboob demons, bunny girls shooting missiles, and goat vore). However, even such serious VNs often end up bashing you in the head with their messaging, or lack enough depth to go for a second read. They don't lend themselves very well to analysis. Few VNs out there deal with real-life matters or issues, such as a particular war or a particular culture, and this matters. Few VNs out there dabble with legitimate philosophy or truly have something original to say. Furthermore, very few VNs try to expand what the medium can do. Playing with perspective, how the text is displayed, how choices are made and how their consequences are conveyed- too few VNs play with these ideas, and the genre is considerably worse off for it. Particularly notably, how almost every high-profile protagonist here is a good old straight white high school age regular guy and how so many stories take place in a high school setting (at least partly, and with a predominantly high school cast). It hurts this genre.

    Fate/Grand Order

The chances of getting a SSR (5*) Servant are ridiculously low, with only a 1% chance of rolling them in Saint Quartz Summons, and even then, that percentage is split amongst several Servants. I got very lucky when I rolled Shuten Douji (which is a limited time Servant btw), since it was only my 2nd 10x roll and the chances of rolling her was like 0.7%. Anyways, some tips for you: - There are four types of cards: Servants, Craft Essences (equipped by Servants to boost stats and apply battle effects), Experience Cards, and Status Up Cards. - 3* cards are called R (Rare), 4* cards are called SR (Super Rare) and 5* cards are called SSR (Super Super Rare). I have no idea what 1* and 2* cards are called but it doesn't really matter since those are usually burned/sold. - You will never be able to roll a SSR Servant from the Tutorial Summoning. However, you will be guaranteed at least 1 SR Servant and 1 SR CE. I got Chevalier d'Eon (Saber) and Heracles (Berserker). Can't really recall the CE I got. More info on Summoning here. - Don't spend quartz on restoring AP or reviving your team. If you remain F2P, quartz are going to be finite. - Continue to remain F2P (unless you are loaded). I got my first SSR Servant within a month of playing without spending a single cent, so it's not impossible to get the rare stuff without burning a hole in your wallet.

  21. Hey, all! I finally decided to do a post on Fuwanovel about TsukiWare's latest projects! We've reached our original $3,000 goal, and there is a stretch goal or two that could be met if enough people are interested! The spoilers below contain information about both of our titles - let us know your thoughts! If you're interested in backing us, our Kimochi Red Light campaign ends on March 24, 2017, at 1:55AM EDT. I will start to post more information once the campaign has ended, including a few updates regarding our UI, Programming, and a couple other links that I need to update once I confirm a few things. We will be releasing demos of these titles, which I will also link here as well! (Images in this spoiler are NSFW)

  22. This is a given, but in any situation that involves online polls on a site that doesn't require rl identity verification (as in, a one-person, one-account system with a design that makes bot sign-ups difficult) dealing with money-making entertainment... you won't be able to trust the polls completely. While I said Getchu is slightly more accurate than EGS, that doesn't account for a different type of skewing (people who purchase multiple copies across multiple accounts)... though to be fair, that is a relative minority mostly made up of hardcore users who tend to be more honest than the trolls. To give you an example of how things can get skewed... pandering to reviewers is a common problem in the West in regular video games. Naming characters in an rpg after a particular reviewer is one that got used a couple of times before the turn of the century, before online reviews became the mainstream... and financial incentives are the most common one nowadays. *shrugs* In the end, the only advice I can give you is to take popularity polls with a grain of salt, ignore the highest and lowest votes, and then keep in mind that, even if it is rated highly, that doesn't mean you'll like it. The same for if it is rated lowly. I've honestly liked some games that got rated horribly, and, while I could see why, it didn't stop me from liking them, lol.

Other than that, we're still working hard to get that prologue patch out. Since our former TLC left last week, we are looking for a TLC for this project again. If you feel confident in your abilities, please PM me. That's all the progress I have for this week. I'll see you all soon with more progress.

  25. Maybe both of Melty Moment and Sukiren could be interesting to you, considering that those two came from the same company as Fureraba and Kari Gurashi Ren'ai respectively. Also if you're in the mood to read very long VN, then perhaps Hoshiori would be suffice to you. Other than those before, I think Miagete can be good and if you want to read the H scenes as well then I suggest you to read it in Japan, because the translated version didn't have the H scenes. Also there's Konosora in which the retranslation patch was just recently released, and both of Konosora and Miagete was from the same company as Koiresort (Pulltop). For the last recommendations, I would recommend you both of To Heart 2 and Yoake. I hope my recommendations abovr would be helpful to you, and have fun.

We have 95% of all the backgrounds, 100% of portraits, dialogues and so on, but we want to add multiple animations which are not yet completed. I need to find out how fast can we do them - from the programming side they are very easy, but the artists have very limited time. : ( Meanwhile, it's another screenshotsaturday! And with it, the Little Oak village, 8 years before the action of our game. Loving the new colors. Ideally, we would like to add fire animation as well.

    Can I market this?

The first thing that comes the closest in terms of setting and stylistic similarity is definitely Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth. As Sanahtlig said - you should consider marketing your game as an interactive fiction. A lot of people like to use the classic term, but in my opinion visual novels at this point are mostly considered "porn" games for horny teenagers and deciding to stick to this might bring some unwanted results in case of your project. Unless your project has appropriate size and quality, calling it a vn will instantly alienate a large portion of the player base, who would be otherwise supportive of your game. It's also worth to point out, visual novels are often considered games based on distinctively japanese art stylistics your game definitely does not have, either. If played well, your game might actually attract both fans of low fantasy, as well as fans of anthropomorphic characters (the furry fandom, in others words). I can already see potential, considering the story is very much Bethesda-esque in terms of plot devices and crude, out-of-the-box humour. Keep it up and you'll make it worthwhile. As an interesting remark, I'd highly encourage you to play the Along the Edge and it's spiritual sequel - Seers Isle (that one actually should be closer to your heart), which should be coming out soon. I consider Along the Edge one of the best interactive fiction experiences of the past few years, that clearly shows there's potential in these kinds of storytelling devices along with a community, that follows.

    Otome game writers

In one particular thread about otome games, fellow Fuwan Plk_Lesiak said something that made me think. "It looks like a lot of japanese otome games are written by men" (along these lines). I can't really describe why is that, but I have the same feeling. But hey, maybe we're both wrong so I decide to do a little research. I looked into the team of some big japanese otome companies and tried to find their scenario writers. Here's what I found! For Otomate: Code:Realize, a very popular JP otomege, was written by five people and the main one is Nishimura Yuu, a male who's a freelancer LN writer. In the game's fandisc though, that's more romance oriented I should add, a woman named Kojima Nao is credited instead. Collar x Mallice was written by three people, two of them I couldn't find information about their gender. The remaining one, Sahara Yuki, is a woman. She also helped with Rejet's Black Wolves Saga, Ken ga Kimi and Bad Medicine. The director is also a female. Kokuchou no Psychedelica was written by a team of three females and also directed by a female. 7'scarlet is the first one I found that only one person is credit. And this person is Kanazawa Tomio, male. Period Cube also has a single person credited: Seki Ryouko, female. Amnesia was written by two females. For Rejet: Tokyo Yamanote Boys (at least the first one because it's such a long series) was written by one male and one female. Tiny x Machinegun's plot was written by Yamada Yuumi, female. The Dot Kareshi series also have multiple writers, but the main one for the 2nd and 3rd games (the best ones imo) is Urai Anna, female, nice comedy there girl I loved that game. There's way more games here with very little information about the writer compared to Otomate... For Honeybee: Re:Birthday Song, jeez, there are ten people credited there, at least the three main ones are female. Ayakashi Gohan, same as above. Starry Sky series have less writers, but still, all of them are female. For Kalmia8: No info about Little Miss Lonesome or Kami-sama Nante Yondenai!, but Torikago no Marriage was written by two females. One look at its VNDB page and you'll see how different the latter is in comparison with the other two games. It doesn't even seem like it's by the same company! For Karin Entertainment (this is not as famous, but just to do a comparison): Princess Nightmare and Eikoku Tantei Mysteria were written by one female (the same one, in fact). Zettai Meikyuu Himitsu no Oyayubi-hime and Danzai no Maria were written by two females. So, what can I say after all this research? It seems that as the company gets bigger, we have less females, less information and more Frankenstein's creature of a plot, dear lord, I couldn't get over ten people yet...

    Otome game writers

One thing that bothers me is that, precisely because they are written by men, the majority of otomege that catch my interest end up with DIDS (Damsel in Distress Syndrome) patient protagonists (which I hate like the plague). A few I have played or tried to play managed to escape this poisonous plague (Sanzen Sekai), but it is as ubiquitous to the otomege genre as the 'average guy/idiot who somehow forms a harem' is in charage.
