  1. Today we are proud to announce that in an effort to get fuwanovel's userbase accustomed to japanese text, we have decided to make it so that all topics are read and written sideways. We expect this change to have a great effect, and in about two weeks we plan on permanently changing the site to only allow for japanese posts Cheers The fuwanovel Staff Team.,

    Otome game writers

One thing that bothers me is that, precisely because they are written by men, the majority of otomege that catch my interest end up with DIDS (Damsel in Distress Syndrome) patient protagonists (which I hate like the plague). A few I have played or tried to play managed to escape this poisonous plague (Sanzen Sekai), but it is as ubiquitous to the otomege genre as the 'average guy/idiot who somehow forms a harem' is in charage.

  12. Hey guys. I have been swamped with work, so please pardon the lateness of this post. We want to do a contest on Fuwa, because we love it here. We already asked for feedback. --- The Prize One lucky VN character/couple (and their admirer) will win a piece of fan art by Ivy Fetish. You can check out her work in our OELVN thread. --- The Contest Tell us who your favorite VN character/couple is! Part #1. Describe why you love that character/couple; anywhere from 50-2000 words (and no, we're not counting). Part #2. Provide some reference images of that character/couple. Note: Your character/couple can be any gender or orientation! --- Rules 1. One entry per person. 2. Contest ends at 200 thread posts or on April 10th, 2018; whichever comes sooner 3. We will randomly pick a winner based on the post number. 4. Important! You can discuss yours/other's favorite characters/couples; doing so increases your chances of winning. Put "Vote: MyFavoriteCharacter/Couple" at the top of your replies, and if that post is selected when we do the drawing, then your vote will count for that character/couple. This means being active in the thread increases your chances of winning. 5. Ivy Fetish will get you your art by May 10th; you can use it anywhere you'd like as a signature, avatar, etc. Nothing commercial though, please. 6. We'll run this contest every few months for as long as people are interested; if you don't win the first time, then you'll get another chance for sure!

    VNs with a Seasonal Theme

The greater proportion of VNs out there take place in a three or four month period... and are usually linked to a seasonal theme. This is especially true of moege/charage variants, but it can also be said for more story-focused games, like Tasogare no Sinsemilla. I just thought I'd bring out my thoughts on the use of seasonal themes here, since it comes to mind fairly often. The two most common seasons used in VNs as a thematic background to the setting are summer and winter. Now, why might this be? At least one of the reasons is that these two seasons are the most extreme of the four, but the larger part of this is that most VNs are at least partly about school life or have high school student characters. Why is this important? Because of summer and winter vacation. While schools provide convenient places for a protagonist to meet and interact with a heroine, school can also get in the way of the deepening of the relationship between them. As a result, many VN writers find it convenient to use the summer or winter break to serve as a relationship-deepening period where the other characters are conveniently sidelined by the lack of daily contact. In addition, summer has the advantage of creating chances for swimsuit CGs and swimsuit sex (incidentally, this is the reason why summer is the most common of the four seasons in VNs) and winter allows for more elaborate fashion choices for the heroines (incidentally, this is probably why companies with really good artists tend to like this season so much). Personally, I despise summer. I do like swimming, but since I hate swimming with others (give me an isolated location to swim in and I'm happy), summer doesn't really hold much of an attraction for me. Moreover, the effort needed to keep myself from getting heatstroke in Austin means that I don't have any of the delusions of joyful summer that charage/moege seem to want to promote. I love winter... but I so rarely experience it, since Austin's winter lasts only a few weeks before becoming what amounts to spring (though the rest of the world is still winter). Now, for the 'lesser' seasons... Spring is more common than autumn, for reasons that should be obvious. However, I'll go ahead and state them. Spring is a season that tends to be universally be seen as a yearly period of new beginnings. In Japan, it is the time when new students enter school and old ones graduate, and it also marks the period of the year where the most brilliant flowers bloom. As a result, it is more romanticized than poor old autumn... Autumn... I have only seen three VNs that used autumn as a theme. I think part of that is because of the symbolism, but another is that the only real visual attraction of the season is the leaves... and it takes a real sensitivity and grace on the part of the writer to use that kind of symbolism well. Personally, I love this season. When I lived farther to the north, it was the ideal season to sit outside and read, and it was the perfect season to spend exploring the nearby wooded areas. In VNs, the season is generally a solemn one, and it tends to serve as a background for somewhat darker stories. The bottom line is that I hate summer. Yes, I just wrote all that to get back to the fact that I hate summer. I look forward eagerly to a new ice age, and I'll just look blankly at anyone that suggests that losing most of North America to the ice would be a bad thing. In other words... my air conditioner won't be repaired until Monday, so I'm currently cursing the guy who invented warm seasons.

  21. Uh, we already know that voice acting is really expensive. So expensive that in MangaGamer's early days they had to remove it from two games because they couldn't afford it. So no, they can't. They have to pay for this new voice acting, so they means they have to charge for it.

  25. Most of the ones I've read so far are recommended.... - Kono Oozora https://vndb.org/v9093 . Very light hearted in general (but still has some drama). This game has a brand new fan translation that came out days ago too. - Wagamama High Spec https://vndb.org/v17823 . Also light hearted, with some great artwork and cutesy music. Plot has a lot of manga and eroge references (since the protag is a manga author). And this VN has a LOT of H content too. - Grisaia no Kajitsu https://vndb.org/v5154 . I'm always going to recommend this to everyone. Great cast, funny writing, nice music. The common route is VERY light hearted and full of comedy. The character routes get quite serious though.

  27. Well, I loved PE but I also didn't like Noble Works and Hatsukoi 1/1. Both VN's don't have a story and the character were imo not really good. I don't know why people say that Noble Works is similar to PE... It isn't! Noble Works is more a comedy VN with no story. I would recommend you to read: - Chrono Clock --> At first I thought that it won't be a good VN but I was wrong with this assumption. I liked Chrono Clock more than PE. There is a nice and heart-warming story with a great romance and it's the first time that the Incest-Route was the best for me. The incest route dosen't focus on the "incest" part actually but it's more about "family". - Grisaia no Kajitsu --> Be aware that the common route is very long! But it's one of the best VN out there in english with an awesome MC. 2 Route's focus on romance (Yumiko and Sacchi), the other have a really good story as far as I know. But if you really like romance then start with Yumiko's route. I loved her route very much and imo I have never read a better romance route. Furthermore I mostly skip the h-scenes because they aren't really romantic but in Yumiko's route it was my first time that I actually read all h-scenes in a route. They were actually very good and cute. Every route in Grisaia no Kajitsu focus on the plot and in Yumiko's route you also have a good romance. Personally, I love storys were the MC does everything to protect his girl. - Dracu-Riot! --> It's from the same company as Noble Works but it's a lot better. The story is average but we have a Story till the end of each route. Furthermore it's funny and I liked the romance. - G-senjou no Maou --> Well, it isn't your average VN. The Plot is really interesting but the romance is a little bit too short.

  29. I've been making a walkthrough as I go, and this is how it looks right now: You use the talk choices to gain affection with the girl of your choosing. Once you get enough, you unlock a scene with her. Rinse and repeat until you finally lock yourself into her route. In the meanwhile, there's also a 'common route' thingie where it just plays random daily life scenes as long as you don't lock yourself into a route. These don't reflect any of those choices or girl-specific scenes, since they're more of a generic common route. But that's fine. They're just filler.

  30. I didn't go into this VN expecting much. Judging by the cover (considering I am a bibliophile, you would think I would know better, lol) and the Getchu page, I thought it was going to be a half-nukige along the same lines as the Ren'ai Jijou series (since Otaku was written by the same guy). However, I was surprised at what I got... the first addition to my 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' list since Natsuiro Recipe in mid-2015. As a reference point, I almost never add VNs to the Chicken Soup for the Soul list. The requirements for it are just too strict (low stress, soothing, mildly cathartic, and overall something that leaves you feeling better about the world afterward). So, I generally expect years to go by between each addition to that list. I specifically select these VNs for their restful properties, so the ones on the list are the kind of VN you should consider going to when you feel the need to just take a total rest from the stress of your life. Now, this VN is a kinetic novel, which means there is only one ending and one story. In fact, there are no choices in this game. This isn't a bad thing, from the perspective of a game I'm adding to the list above. To be blunt, choices are a type of stress-factor at times, so it is nice to just be able to read the VN without thinking about choices or looking at a walkthrough. The story focuses on a young scientist named Kyouji (he's in his mid-twenties), who, at the beginning of the story, has just finished his second and third prototype androids. The important thing about these androids is that they have emotions and the ability to learn and think for themselves (in other words, human emulation and autonomous AI decision making). This story is about how the three androids and Kyouji grow together, and it is mostly a gentle story about the family they form together. The oldest android, Nect, is an 'older-sister' type who serves as Kyouji's accountant, assistant, go-between, and secretary. She is good at keeping him from breaking the household finances and keeping him on track to finish whatever work he has taken on at any given time, but she is also very caring and protective about Kyouji and her 'little sisters'. Lux is the second android, designed to be a reliable partner and possess a desire to help others. This quickly turns her into what Kyouji refers to as a ダメ人間製造機 (a woman who reduces men to helplessness through her eager 'help'). She loves nothing more than to do things for others, including her sisters and Kyouji, and she feels the most fulfilled when she is doing her level best to spoil someone rotten. Sphere is the third android, designed specifically to be like a younger family member. She hates being lonely and wants the affection of her family members, and she also has the most effective learning ability, eagerly absorbing information about human relations from movies, anime, manga, and books. Overall, most of the VN is gentle, heartwarming slice of life, with frequent bits mild comedy (mostly running jokes like Roppu's desire to be modified by Kyouji) and occasional h-scenes (yes, they are occasional). I honestly haven't felt this relaxed coming out of a VN in a while, and I liked the ending fairly well. I give this VN high ratings for essentially erasing my stress from the work of the last few days, lol.

  35. The first VN I read was Katawa Shoujo in 2015. This was somewhat of an eye-opener to me as I never thought I could enjoy a medium like VNs (in fact I do not even think I had heard of anime or VNs at the time). This in turn made me interested in checking out anime, but so far I have yet to really get into anime despite looking at various series, I guess it just is not suited for me.

  40. This thread still needs help to grow. Feel free to post your useful resources, with a small description of what it is. You can also ask any questions related to this topic. ------------ Chances are, if you read VN, at some point you'll get interested in learning Japanese. This thread will NOT tell you how to learn japanese, I'm not qualified for that. This is a compilation of useful resources you might need, put together by helpful members and myself. If you know absolutely nothing about the language, I recommend you to read a bit about it before. Read some wikipedia pages and the introductions of various guides. The best way to approach things is probably to try out a bit of everything and see what works for you. Here are the categories of resources presented: *Learning methods: more-or-less complete schedule other people put together. *Useful softwares, apps & cie *Kanji & Kana *Grammar *Practice material Learning methods Those hardly consist of rigid guides that'll take you all the way, but they might help to give you an idea on how to approach learning the language. Don't spend too much time looking for methods, you'll most likely end up doing things in a different way anyway. Tae Kim's complete guide to japanese (everything is not complete yet) Nukemarine's Suggested Guide for Beginners "It's a guide on how to learn japanese by plowing through anki cards in a effective manner. It's made by a community member at Koohi forums. (I'd like to mention you can learn vocab very fast with this method and keep it in memory. But you learn without a lot of context, which has its negative sides.)" (Bolverk) The Tay way (note that this is from 2013 and no longer in use) Aaeru's "learn how to read VN in two years" Useful softwares Those are basic tools you'll almost certainly need, or at least try out, in your learning of japanese. Google IME: Allows you to type in Japanese. Click this link, click the big blue button, install: you can now switch your typing mode to japanese. Rikaichan: Firefox app that gives you a dictionary entry for a word by simply hovering over it. Extremely useful. Also exists for Chrome. Anki: A flash card software with a built-in algorithm for learning efficiency. Exists on Android and iOS too. (Regular hand-written flash-cards can be a useful tool too). Use shared decks to find vocab/kanji pre-made decks. Note about Anki: the use of Anki is advocated as necessary by some and deemed completely useless by others. Starting out with basic vocab/kanji grinding will probably help you ease into practice material, however learning tons of words, or worse even tons of kanji out of context is not a good idea. It's up to you to find out whether you want to use Anki (and whether you can). ITH, TA, Mecab, Jparser: ITH is a text hooker that'll extract the text from, say, a VN for you. Translation Aggregator will pass said text through parsers and dictionaries. Extremely useful to practice on VNs. Some tips and other softs for ITH here Chiitrans: a useful alternative to ITH/TA. Same principle. Read the tuto for more details. Visual Novel Reader: Another alternative to ITH/TA. Note about text hookers: it might seem obvious but do NOT use machine translations with your text hookers. You won't learn anything from the garbage it feeds you and you won't even actually understand what's going on, whether you think you do or not. It is also not a very good idea to rely on parsers for grammar purposes. Parsers are far from perfect. They certainly can't replace a grammar resource and basic googling. Think of text hookers as crutches you use until you become able to read without constantly looking up vocabulary. It is also a good idea to switch to japanese-japanese dictionaries as soon as you can - only they will give you the nuances of the words, and they're also much less flawed than existing free j-e dictionaries. Kanji & Kana Learning the hiragana and katakana should be about the first thing you do. It's not very long or difficult. Becoming accustomed to reading them is longer but it eventually comes. Kanjis are probably the biggest psychological barrier for japanese learners. I don't have a magical method to suggest, but do tell yourself it's really not that hard if you stop thinking too hard about it and trying to find the best, most optimized method for learning them. Try to learn the basic ones, see where you can get, and start practicing on reading as soon as you can. RealKana: This is just an example among others of ways to learn the kana. It's the first thing you should do anyway, and it's not hard or long. Heisig's Remember the Kanji: A method for learning kanji through memo stories, by association with an english keyword. Good for starters, probably won't get you through the whole kanji learning though. See Tay's guide and this website too. Kanjidamage: Learning the kanjis through radicals and memo sentences. I'm not a fan of his method, but it has some interesting information in the introduction and on some kanjis. Grammar Basic grammar: Tae Kim's guide: The most popular (and free!) guide on the internet. Rather compact, has all the essential grammar with good explanations and examples. A must. Genki: To take things more slowly, or have a different view on points you didn't get. (No links for that one yet, it's not free, sorry) Nihongomori: this is a youtube channel with videos explaining grammar, but also vocab and other misc things, done by native speakers (in english for the basics, japanese later). It goes from basic grammar (JLPT N5-N4 level) up to finer points (N2-N1 level) so it actually covers intermediate/advanced grammar too. The videos are pretty fun and well done, if you like the video media it might work good for you. More advanced grammar: Imabi: Lots of in-depth explanations about various grammar subjects. Not recommended for pure beginners and not written as a guide. If you want to go further than that, you'll need to go into japanese grammar books. Don't forget a simple research on the internet can give you lots of explanations about pretty much anything anyway. Advanced grammar: If you want to go further into grammar than that (for example if you want to read 古典 and such), you'll probably need to go into japanese grammar textbooks. This guide is approved as being really good. (Change the encoding of the page to Japanese EUC-JP for it to display correctly) This page could be useful too. Feel free to do your own research! Others: A grammar cheat sheet. Not for beginners, obviously. Nihongoresources: A grammar guide. Never tried it. Practice Material General advice: Try to avoid material based on comedy (because you need a good enough knowledge to get the jokes), or that rely heavily on slang or local dialect. Also, avoid things that have too much technical vocabulary (hard sci-fi) or chuuni stuff with abstract concepts and archaic kanjis. Chokochoko: Some practice texts (articles on various stuff), ranked by JLPT difficulty. Children's tales: easy place to start. Japanese subtitles for lots of anime. VNs in japanese: *Relatively easy language for a story-focused VN. *List of VN for beginners, with two levels of difficulty. *A big list of Visual novels to read if you are confident enough (~JPTL N2). I won't point you out to raw mangas, of course, but if you can find high enough quality scans (or can afford to import them) it's obviously a great way to practice. Every shoujo and shonen manga have furiganas on every kanjis. Seinen/josei may not have them, but it doesn't mean they're necessarily more difficult. Dictionaries, vocabulary resources Note: Japanese-english dictionaries (the free ones you'll find on the internet) are pretty much all based on Edict. Of course, as a beginner you have to use j-e dictionaries, but 1) edict is far from perfect 2) j-e dictionaries are inherently limited anyway: only japanese dictionaries will give you the right nuance (and they're rather excellent). So as soon as you can, switch to japanese dictionaries. The jump is not easy but it's necessary, especially if you intend to read VNs with a higher level of language. Overall, the internet is your friend! A simple search will often yield whatever you're looking for. Finding your way, especially in japanese websites, is the most useful skill you can develop (although once again you need to reach a certain level of confidence first). Jisho: Jap/eng dictionary. Tangorin: Same thing. WWWJDIC Dictionary site. Japanese online dictionary. Requires good enough knowledge of japanese to be used. Slang dictionary. Same as above. Writing recognition: Tries to find a kanji directly written with your mouse. Tanos: Various JLPT-related resources: vocabulary and kanji lists, etc. Blog posts and articles about learning japanese Blogpost by garejei: Tips and a view on kanji memorization. ----- Thanks to Clephas, Bolverk, cryofrzd, Okami, garejei, Mephisto and probably a bunch of others I forgot to add (sorry!) for their contributions.
