  1. Turns out Fureraba isn't really a VN, since the protagonist lives with his mother:

  2. Two weeks ago I've brought you an interview with Reine Works' Jackie M., where we talked about realities of OELVN publishing and the specificity of women-oriented western VNs. Today, I have an immense pleasure of bringing the spotlight onto one of my favourite western VN creators. Nami is an indie game developer and author of highly appreciated yuri titles, such as Her Tears Were My Light and Syrup and the Ultimate Sweet. If you observe VN contests such as Yuri Game Jam or NaNoRenO, or you read my post about the best YGJ VNs, you should probably be at least somewhat familiar with her work – and if you’re not, I hope reading this short interview will convince you to change that ASAP. Enjoy! ------------------------------------------------------ Plk_Lesiak: Hello and thank you for agreeing to this interview! Many people interested in the OELVN scene might know your Itch.io handle NomnomNami or at least recognize the style you use in your projects, but probably not much more. Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Nami: When I’m not making my own games I’m usually screaming about Disgaea, but most of my time lately goes into working for Lab Zero on their big crowdfunded RPG, Indivisible. Right now my life is work, work, work, so I’m afraid I don't have much interesting stuff to say about it. PL: Usually, developers that try their strength in the visual novel format have a strong connection to otaku culture and borrow various ideas and elements of style from Japanese media. How is it in your case? N: I've been a huge fan of Japanese anime/manga/games since I was like 10, and I’ve loved a lot of games that use a visual novel style format so it seemed really natural to me. I think my subconscious goal is to write things that feel like a Disgaea cutscene - I just really love Disgaea! PL: Disgaea is, above all, a strategy game series. Are there any visual novels that you think influenced your work? Do you read any Japanese or Western VNs nowadays? N: While these aren't pure VNs, I really enjoyed the original Ace Attorney trilogy, Hotel Dusk, and 999. Nowadays I don't play games that often, but I browse Itch.io a lot and try to check out what other people make for NaNoRenO and Yuri Jam! Read the full article at evnchronicles.blogspot.com

  3. So I've been playing Fureraba for the whole day, and I have to say I really like it. Since I like it so much, I'm going to walk through the first few hours. Only real spoilers it might included would be for the first hour. Otherwise, just an endless torrent of funny scenes. And that's it for the scenes before we start getting choices. Next time, probably screenshots of a route, and those will contain spoilers for the route.

    Otome game writers

In one particular thread about otome games, fellow Fuwan Plk_Lesiak said something that made me think. "It looks like a lot of japanese otome games are written by men" (along these lines). I can't really describe why is that, but I have the same feeling. But hey, maybe we're both wrong so I decide to do a little research. I looked into the team of some big japanese otome companies and tried to find their scenario writers. Here's what I found! For Otomate: Code:Realize, a very popular JP otomege, was written by five people and the main one is Nishimura Yuu, a male who's a freelancer LN writer. In the game's fandisc though, that's more romance oriented I should add, a woman named Kojima Nao is credited instead. Collar x Mallice was written by three people, two of them I couldn't find information about their gender. The remaining one, Sahara Yuki, is a woman. She also helped with Rejet's Black Wolves Saga, Ken ga Kimi and Bad Medicine. The director is also a female. Kokuchou no Psychedelica was written by a team of three females and also directed by a female. 7'scarlet is the first one I found that only one person is credit. And this person is Kanazawa Tomio, male. Period Cube also has a single person credited: Seki Ryouko, female. Amnesia was written by two females. For Rejet: Tokyo Yamanote Boys (at least the first one because it's such a long series) was written by one male and one female. Tiny x Machinegun's plot was written by Yamada Yuumi, female. The Dot Kareshi series also have multiple writers, but the main one for the 2nd and 3rd games (the best ones imo) is Urai Anna, female, nice comedy there girl I loved that game. There's way more games here with very little information about the writer compared to Otomate... For Honeybee: Re:Birthday Song, jeez, there are ten people credited there, at least the three main ones are female. Ayakashi Gohan, same as above. Starry Sky series have less writers, but still, all of them are female. For Kalmia8: No info about Little Miss Lonesome or Kami-sama Nante Yondenai!, but Torikago no Marriage was written by two females. One look at its VNDB page and you'll see how different the latter is in comparison with the other two games. It doesn't even seem like it's by the same company! For Karin Entertainment (this is not as famous, but just to do a comparison): Princess Nightmare and Eikoku Tantei Mysteria were written by one female (the same one, in fact). Zettai Meikyuu Himitsu no Oyayubi-hime and Danzai no Maria were written by two females. So, what can I say after all this research? It seems that as the company gets bigger, we have less females, less information and more Frankenstein's creature of a plot, dear lord, I couldn't get over ten people yet...

  7. Don't know why but that made me laugh, haha. Thank you guy's for your answers and I have decided to read Michiru's route. I liked her in the common route more than Sachi and seriously I am really interested in her route. I know it has something to do that she has lost her will to live or something like that.

    What are you playing?

So I'm at episode 9 of MLA, and I think it deserves to pause for a minute and appreciate how amazing the wordbuilding is and how much care for detail they poured into it. And I'm not only referring to the technical details (leaving aside the quantum bullshit, that is ), which of course are important, but in my opinion less so than the true gem that is the society it builds. It's so damn realistic that it legit scares me. In the spoiler I'm going to elaborate on this a little. It's not going to contain major spoilers, but if you prefer reading MLA totally blind then it's probably for the best if you avoided it. So yeah. The social behaviour in MLA is not original because it doesn't need to be. It's instead a really accurate picture of our history and ourselves.

  9. Here is a list of VNs officially released in english, I will likely not update this list anymore after August 2021 as I don't see much of a point in it anymore with improvements to the search function of vndb. Orange text means confirmed for an official english release while yellow text means that a part has been released but not the entire VN. I have also made a list with the ones with physical release, this list is sorted the same way as this but also has info on where the titles can be bought and if it is available List of physical english releases of VNs MangaGamer (Store) Sekai Project (Homepage)/Denpasoft (Store) JAST USA (Store) NekoNyan (Store) Frontwing (Homepage) Sol Press (Store) Shiravune (Loves DRM, especially Denuvo) Visual Arts Fruitbat Factory (Store) MoeNovel (Burn in hell) Cherry Kiss Games (Homepage) Winged Cloud Degica Aksys Games (Store) XSEED Games (Store) NIS America (Store NA, Store EU) PQube Others (Japanese) Others (not japanese) Himeya Soft (Bankrupt) Hirameki International (Quit the VN market) SakuraGame/Paradise Project (Machine translated, do not buy from them)

    Hi everyone

Straight stuff. Nv tried Yuri and definitely no BL stuff .. As for books, I read stuff from a wide variety of authors, but mostly old (>5 years old) stuff as I'm a cheapskate and usually borrows from the Library Authors of romance novels I read before - Dorothy Garlock, Julie Garwood, Teresa Hill, and ofc Nora Roberts, among many others. If it's about love and it has an interesting story, i'll probably eat it up

  18. Understand, chuunige mostly appeal to a very core fanbase. The style, the fact that they don't translate well, and the fact that most of the action/story is so 'out there' makes the games unapproachable. The sheer amount of text means that localization costs are through the roof, which makes things worse, of course. I'm being realistic, ignoring my inner fanboy who screams everybody should love chuunige because charage suck in comparison. However, that is the flat-out truth. So, I decided to make a list of chuunige I believe would sell in the west/appeal more to the western brain... and not just the core fanbase. I have these ordered by the most likely to the least. 1. Bullet Butlers- I say Bullet Butlers is the most accessible precisely because it uses a lot of elements that Western audiences can easily grasp without having to be 'deep' into otaku media. Zombies, elves, dragons, and orcs. Firearms as the most common weapon type, superviolence, and a film noir atmosphere to a great deal of the game. If I were to name one chuunige that has the potential to be a hit (by VN standards), if properly advertised, it is this one. 2. Draculius- If I were to name a sort-of chuunige that is accessible to people that don't particularly like chuunige, this would be it. If you liked the best parts of Libra and hated the rest, you'll probably like this game. It has aged somewhat, but the characters are unique, the story is excellent, and the humor is recognizable on both sides of the ocean. 3. Hello, Lady- Yes, I went there. If you can enjoy Narita Shinri, you will like this game, regardless of your genre preference. Narita Shinri is a protagonist who will earn as many haters as he does lovers, and there won't be that much room in between. However, his story is very much one that is visceral and easily comprehensible for any human who has lost someone they loved. 4. Shinigami no Testament- 3rdEye's chuunige are accessible. I could put any chuunige by that company in this spot other than Bloody Rondo and say that it has the same potential for success. Even Bloody Rondo does have some appeal outside its genre (in fact, it probably has more, lol). 3rdEye is a company that I can use to brainwash newbies without overwhelming them, which is why I was happy when Sorcery Jokers got localized, lol. 5. Gekkou no Carnevale- I can guarantee someone is going to ask why I didn't mention any other Nitroplus game besides this one. However, the themes in this game are very Western, for the most part... and werewolves and murder are always guaranteed to catch the interest of a certain (surprisingly large) crowd over here. Put in living dolls and mafia connections as well, and you have a recipe for success. I actually thought of naming some others, but when I seriously thought about it, the hurdles for a Westerner and non-chuunige addict for playing those were just too high. Anything Bakumatsu is going to be translated poorly, so Last Cavalier is out. Evolimit has potential, but I thought BB is more likely to catch hold of westerners who aren't already part of the scene. Anything like Dies Irae is almost guaranteed to flop if it isn't 100% crowd-funded (as in, all costs paid for by the crowd-funding), so Bradyon Veda and the Silverio series are out. Vermilion has similar problems. Muramasa suffers from swordsmanship infodumping that will probably cause the average reader's brain to go numb early on. Tokyo Necro has zombies, but the chances of people actually getting past the prologue are relatively low, despite the coolness of the story and setting. Izuna Zanshinken has enormous potential in the US, because of the style and the themes it tackles, but its episodic 'feeling' is a huge negative for some of us...

  25. Looks good and likely very useful to a lot of people. However I wonder if it isn't a waste of time to do this by hand. It will need constant updating, particularly if you plan to update votes. Wouldn't it be wiser to use VNDB API to automatically fetch VNs for each company and then for each VN fetch average vote and length? This can be scripted and output some html file, which can then be copy pasted into the first post to update with minimal manual work. The VNDB API is quite powerful and exist for purposes like this.

  27. Michiru's route I would say is not quite as sad as Sachi's (also I love Michiru for reasons, shout-out to all you other people). If I can try and outline this in specific terms, Michiru's is more generally depressive but Sachi's route has a distinct moment of concentrated sadness that kinda disperses throughout the rest of the route and provides some sad context. Here's hoping I've helped a bit. Amane's route is kinda sad when you get to the chunk (you'll recognise it) but happy for most of the rest, especially the good ending, and Makina's route is......well let me say this, avoid the bad ending. As I've characterised it to friends, it feels like the bad ending was written first whilst the writer was depressed, and then wrote the happy ending after his co-workers realised what he'd written and sneaked some anti-depressants into their food or some such.

    Favorite VN trilogy?

Because it's the only trilogy that I've actually played the entirety of, the Galaxy Angels trilogy has to take the place almost by default. Still certainly worth playing through since the gameplay actually required some thought, and does actually get very tough later on in the trilogy. That, and there are some good romances which don't ever go down the H-scene route since I think it's a kid's game (I mean this literally, not in a derogatory way). Just nice to have a game without h-scenes that didn't apparently mean I was missing out on actual story content, though on that note I'm at some point going to finish the Grisaia trilogy from Steam. Go localisations, even the censored ones.

  30. You can get decent list on VNDB if you can figure out how to use filters. Use this one for instance: https://vndb.org/v/all?q=&fil=&rfil=type-complete.doujin-0.released-1.lang-en.plat-win&s=title&o=a It will list VNs where at least one release has the following: full commercial release in English for windows. Here is another: https://vndb.org/v/all?q=&fil=&rfil=type-complete.patch-1.freeware-1.released-1.lang-en.plat-win&s=title&o=a This time it's full releases of freeware patches. You can adjust the filters as needed, but I think this is the closest you can get for a complete list. Some things can be filtered on both VNs and releases, in which case you will likely want to filter releases. Doing it on VNs mean if you filter for English releases for windows, it will hit English in one release and Japanese release for windows in another, but not English release for windows. VN filters are still useful for some tasks, such as filtering for tags.

  31. Nothing much to discuss really, i did one route (two if u count Saeko) so far This is mainly a comedy VN, the romance is nice but its mostly the character interactions thats good, I like how Renna always gets annoyed with Hiroshi and how Hiroshi gets along with almost anyone you know for an MC that doesnt fight, Hiroshi is pretty likable, he is muuuuuch better than Hatsukoi's MC atleast and he doesnt have dumbass friends (well he does but they are unimportant, Van is cool) Also, i dont like lolis but Hanako really is adorable ;d

I don't know about this in VNs, but if the goal is female feet, I might be able to hook you up with some women who enjoys walking all over men. I seem to run into that kind everywhere.
