    Today is my birthday

February 21st, in case your timezone is still on the 20th. Anyway, happy birthday to me! I think it is the third one I spend here on Fuwanovel and I must say that these past years have been great. Here I have met nice people, discovered new interestings (euphoria) and it is here that I can share the love for this genre with people with similar minds. Hope to get to next year with my whole backlog empty, although I think this is impossible in just one life.

  3. Your thread title is silly and misleading so let me answer the question it poses rather than your highly disappointing first post. Use "Like" for good shitposts. Never reward productive posts, you'll get more of them! Use "Thanks" for the same except you're a god damn hipster. Use "Sad" for any posts made by me that you can't understand the glory of. Use "Confused" when you're too stupid to understand a post. Exception: also use for all posts by littleshogun. Use "Haha" if you think "haha" is actually an acceptable reaction to anything (signs point to no). Special mention to especially third-reich-mimicking mod posts.

  7. Well. As someone who had dabble here and there with fanfic writing, I'd like to try my hand at writing fanfic for some VNs. But as it stands, the English speaking fandom for VNs is mostly nonexistence on fanfic boards like ff.net or Ao3, outside of a few popular series (and mostly, those are popular because of their anime adaption more than the original VNs). So... May as well try it here. Wouldn't hurt, would it? I can't say that I'm a good writer, nor I have any intention of seriously taking up writing. But I do hope my stuffs don't come off as too crappy. So here we go?

  8. What do you even consider to be a 'great' protagonist? The protagonist from Cinderella Phenomenon is likely the closest thing to a genuine (classic) tsundere I have ever seen. Reading her inner thoughts is sad, interesting, and maddening, all simultaneously. Yuna from Kindred Spirits is so cool! Never have I found a 'girl' to be so cool. The best part is that she feels genuine. It's not an exaggerated trope. She doesn't have the ability to do anything and everything. But she thinks things through and looks so cool while doing it. Is 'cool' devoid of meaning yet? I will advocate for The Second Reproduction till my last breath, even if I have since forgotten the main character's personality. I know she's a fighter and whatnot, but how proactive was she, really? ...I think these are the standouts, though highway blossoms has great female leads as well. Edit: Why the hell did I write 'girl' between quotes up there?

  10. This jogs my memories. It used to be that instead of Steam patches, SP simply released a steam version, at a reduced price, and an adult version, at a normal price.* Imouto Works was taking the adult versions Denpasoft released and creating free patches to apply to the steam version. This would theoretically steal sales from Sekai's adult version, beyond being pretty illegal. From there on Denpasoft started releasing actual paid patches, which is what I believe the blog is referring to. *The topic of pricing is debatable. As you can see, Sanahtlig himself did not seem to perceive the pricing as fair, as well as many other people.

    The State of VNs

I think this is a super interesting topic. I like to write pretty dark and serious stuff myself, but I don't always think it's a fun read. Really good fiction (in any form) can be amazing, but sometimes you just want light and fluffy, or easy and relaxing literature. Complicated isn't always better. Most recently, when it came to writing stories for Ivy Fetish (my partner) to voice, I came to realize that she would benefit from a much lighter, young adult type of style. She finds it easier and more fun to get into. Overall, I think VN fans are pretty awesome and sweet people. A lot of times we're willing to overlook little imperfections because we understand that someone is trying to create and tell a story. Sometimes it's a little detail or a bit of style or some great art that draws us to a title. It's really subjective. Thanks again for the topic, and all this amazing discussion. Was a really fun read over coffee on a lazy morning. <3

  15. VNs based on anime that aired before the VN usually aren't that difficult. Some examples would be Date A Live: Twin Edition Rio Reincarnation, Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o! Kono Yokubukai Game ni Shinpan o! and New Game! The Challenge Stage!. One thing that is great about them aswell is that they are originally all ages, so they are not just cut eroge.

Okay, people who are interested in reading this @Plk_Lesiak and @Mr Poltroon! I know that VNR can be a pain in the ass sometimes with its server and all that, but never fear! I managed to put everything to work in offline mode. That means you'll not need to access VNR's horrible server at all and read in peace. So if you're having trouble, here's what I did: 1) Download VNR, any working version should be fine. 2) Put this file in the following folder inside VNR: Cache/Subtitles/xml. It's the subtitle file for this game's free version that I downloaded and retrieved. And that folder is for offline subs. 3) Make VNR hook the game, but turn off your internet connection during that if you're using the latest version! Otherwise it could overwrite my file with an empty one. A message saying that it found 3900 or so comments should appear in the top right of the screen (that's approximately the number of lines in this game, way less than this is not a good sign) 4) Enjoy!

  19. Look at @Plk_Lesiak using his alternate account to promote himself. Disgraceful. Confession: I have made no particular attempts to hide my love for this medium, and all my backgrounds are of anime, but I think they're generally inoffensive. Except some of the backgrounds might look kinda girly, I guess. I've got it permanently rotating between a bunch of them. Let's take a look at the iffier ones, shall we? https://imgur.com/a/AXgBC Yeah, those are probably the most questionable images in my collection. Must be because I don't have much VN stuff. In short, anybody that looks at my laptop can see I like anime and such. This post, however, might make me consider using some VN stuff. I don't like busy images which is why I haven't really found any good ones yet.

  20. Hello again, you degenerates. Today, instead of trashing one specific part of VNs, why not tackle everything wrong with VN localization companies in general? Mainly doing this because I feel like shitting on the reason I even get good VNs in the first place. Well, here we go. No turning back from here Mangagamer is easily my favourite localization company, yet this doesn't mean they don't have problems. First of all, the low pay that their editors apparently get. Editors do a lot more work than they're given credit for and unfortunately, they don't get enough respect and it shows in their paychecks. Also, maybe respect the opinions of beta testers more than you actually do. Damn, Mangagamer isn't that appreciative of jobs that catch mistakes before release, huh. This last one is a personal complaint for 2018. Stop flooding the market with so much moege. I get that you need to make money and all, but seriously. The amount of companies popping up that have been dedicated to this stale genre is quite appalling. I do respect this company the most though. My many complaints will be saved for later. JAST is my second target and there's a lot to talk about with these guys. So much so that I'll split them up into numbered sections. Make a damn release schedule. This company is the epitome of dropping a VN on people without so much as a release date at times. They're an incredibly unreliable company when it comes to knowing when things will come out. Hence all the memes about them. Check their translations before putting out terrible demos. The Flowers debacle definitely didn't put the company's image in a good light and made us question whether or not Makoto was their only competent translator that they have hired at the moment. Luckily, they added Meru to fix up the next edition in that series. #FreeMakoto Release another worthwile Nitroplus game in this century. They've got such an amazing license in them and it's completely wasted on such a botched company. #FreeMakoto Hire more worthwile translators for their projects. Then maybe we'll get more than 1 or 2 VNs a year from them. Sekai Project. Well well well. There's a lot to complain about here. I'm sure @Barry Benson would agree. Well, let's get on with it. Stop using Kickstarters as a safety net. It shows that they clearly don't believe that the VNs you localize will sell well and that doesn't give VN companies a very good image of them. Make an actual release schedule. Same criticism as with JAST Check their translations. The fact that two botched translations came out in the same month is telling of how much they care about quality, and that needs to change. Manage their localization projects better. It's because of these recent blunders that shine light on how terrible their project management is at the moment. If they're not gonna be able to handle projects well, why get so many licenses? There's no point in handling as many projects as they have when they can't even properly release a quality translation. SoL Press and NekoNyan Soft Make sure to earn our trust. I'm usually extremely pessimistic about new VN localization companies popping up with some sort of ambition and both SoL Press and NekoNyan (God I hate that name) have questionable English in their demos and/or synopsis' and a certain reputation of certain people involved in said new companies. Mikandi is associated with SoL Press and we all know how botched their first release was. NekoNyan has people involved that worked on the botched releases of Saku Saku and Hoshimemo and that makes them untrustworthy to me. Sure, none of these companies have currently released a full fledged VN yet, but it's hard to trust them knowing the reputation behind both companies. If your companies really want to show ambition in your aim to localize VNs, maybe focus on more than just moege. It's hard to see any sort of ambition if all they're trying to localize is something the VN market is already oversaturated with. Even 1 or 2 more VNs with more of a plot emphasis would definitely show me that you're targeting more than just one audience. To me, it's hard to care about a company that only has VNs of one genre planned for release at the moment. I'm hoping they improve on this in the future, but at the moment, this is a major problem with these companies. Well, that took me way too long to write, but my negativity knows no bounds. Post your criticism of VN companies as well because I may have missed some points in my tangents. (I realize that this was a massive waste of time, but oh well)

  28. Yeah, according to VNDB the official 18+ patch released at the same time as the main game on June 27th, so there's no way Imouto Works could've distributed the patch before Sekai Project did. This isn't true, either. In fact, it's impossible. Corona Blossom Vol. 1 was released by Frontwing in July 2016 and its Indiegogo campaign was launched before Karakara even came out. Considering that Corona Blossom was localized by an in-house team and months of preparation would've been needed, that means that their going independent had already been decided long before this happened. Also, going independent isn't reason to believe that they "cut ties" with Sekai Project. SP licensed Grisaia, which means they never had an exclusive partnership with Frontwing (unless explicity stated), and they never made any indication that they were planning on licensing more Frontwing titles. Their relationship with Frontwing started and ended with the Grisaia trilogy. If you want a real example of a Japanese developer cutting ties with a localization company, look at what happened with Muv Luv and Degica. Ironically, Frontwing adopted the same pricing scheme for Corona Blossom ($10 for the base game; $10 for the patch) and have only recently changed their tune.

    [Review] Sakuya

It took me only a minute to come up with my random username. That is because I love stories with robots, even more if they are love interests. Their struggle with the fact they are not human despite looking like one or acting like one is something I really enjoy to read, and cry while doing so. And that's what pulled me towards this otomege by Tetrascope. The complete story of this game is split across 3 games: the free edition, that have the base story and it was translated by people from Fuwa; the paid edition, that adds 18+ content and one additional route, untranslated; and the short append story called "Sweet Present for Shin", also untranslated. I checked all of them, and my experience with them was mostly pleasant, even if not all three parts were absolutely necessary. From the intro movie The story starts in distant future Tokyo, where robotic engineering is advanced enough to have robots indistinguishable from real people around. Although, when I say indistinguishable, I meant physically, since most of them don't possess any way of make rational decisions or emotions. They all follow the strict program built into their heads. Our hero Sakuya is the sole exception. Created by the genius scientist that also the father of our protagonist Akane (you can change her name, this is the default one), Sakuya is so human-like that the biggest robotics company don't waste a chance to strike a deal with our girl to buy him for science. The setting is pretty well crafted, with topics like unemployment, sexbots, and anti-robots movements on the rising being touched at least once in the novel. Sadly, the novel is short and its focus is in the romance between a human and a robot, so all of these questions are pretty underdeveloped. We know those problems exist, and that they are too big to tackle in a novel so short, but not much discussion about it is done either. The romance in the first route, the one in the free edition, in the other hand is pretty sweet and satisfying. Sakuya is simply the cutest boy in terms of personality I ever met in a VN. And he's not even human. He's pure, gentle and caring, sometimes naive and sometimes mature. It's easy to forget that he's an android, and that also happens with Akane and Sakuya himself. And the fact that he's not human, but also too emotional to be a robot, it's the biggest source of drama for our characters. Sakuya's asking to hold hands, WHERE'S THE CHOICE SO I COULD SAY YES??? As Sakuya struggle with what he should be... Our protagonist Akane takes the long and dense road. She acts like our usual shoujo manga protagonist, with all of the "what is this feeling?" type of things... except she's supposed to be 23, so usually she comes across as childish. In fact, Sakuya constantly gets right what she's feeling and the only thing about human interaction he knows is mostly through movies. So yeah, originality is not her strongest asset. Last but not least is Shin, Akane's childhood friend. At first you'll think he'll provide some love triangle drama, but that not happens here. Instead, he serves as a good foil for Sakuya. While Sakuya is a robot who looks like a human, Shin is pretty much a human who looks like a robot. He's always calm and composed, almost emotionless. His sprites have very little variations in expression. Even when he's talking about his memories or feelings, he's as blank as ever. The game is not voiced, so we only have to imagine how monotone he must be in those scenes. But despite all that, he does provide some interesting interactions with Akane. All flashbacks are in this style, making everything even more cute Now, let's cover what you'll get in each version. The free version is the essential one if you're interested in this game. It covers pretty much everything I said up to this point. There's no sex scenes in this version, but they are implied, and that's more than enough in this game. The paid version adds not only the porn, but also a new route and three new extra stories (that you can access in the extra menu after clearing certain endings). Is it worth though? Short answer: no. The porn that was added in the free version route is alright. We can see both Akane and Sakuya on screen, and Sakuya is as gentle as you would expect of him. But let's remember, he's a robot. Even he says at some point that he doesn't feel any physical pleasure from the act. So his face is mostly lacking in expressions, except when he reacts to Akane's reactions. It's porn that focus only in the girl again, but this time the boy really cares about how she's feeling it. The new route... it's very subpar. Most of all because of the route structure, that tricks you into thinking it's a route for Shin when it's not, and it's ending, that shift the tone of the novel to the point that I wondered if the author even cared about the character development they build until said point of the story, because they shattered it to pieces in an absolute ex Machina way. Good thing I read this first, I would have hated to finish the game in this route. Needless to say, the porn of this route is just as bad. The extra scenes are fun though, but you won't lose much if you decide to pick the free version. This version is only recommended if you want to support Tetrascope, the game is just 800 yen on DLsite, it's pretty cheap it won't hurt. It's untranslated, but the free game section subs did appeared for me even in the paid version. Young Akane, Shin and Sakuya in "Sweet Present for Shin" And finally we have Sweet Present for Shin. This is the closest of a route for Shin we'll ever get, and it was as sweet and cute as the original game. It happens 5 years before the main game, but it's better appreciated if you play after it. Finally we can see Shin a bit flustered! It's very short, but still have three endings and one epilogue that ended my time spent with Sakuya, Akane and Shin in a pretty heartwarming note. Sakuya had everything that I like: robots, robot drama, cute characters and romance. Even if the paid version route was pretty bad, it wasn't enough to diminish my love for this game. Moe robots are the best!

  48. Looks like a straight up nukige, and yet they are putting it on steam and kickstarter. Wonder if the all-ages game will have any content at all, or if it will be like Subahibi where you literally can't play it without the patch. In which case Steam seems like an odd platform for the primary distribution of the game, as was the case with Subahibi. Frontwing seems dead set on not even trying to make their own website with adult titles, like Mangagamer and Denpasoft, and instead just bank fully on Steam + patches. It does look cute though, so I might get it. Though, I doubt I'll pledge for anything over a digital edition. The Corona Blossom physical rewards STILL haven't shipped, which makes me fear I'll have to wait another two years before I'll see my physical edition of this, so.
