    Galaxy Angel: The Review

( In a galaxy far, far away. ) The Setup It all started with a flash game. It's hard to believe that my love affair with Visual Novels and my dalliances with manga and anime all sprang from the same source but it's true. Of course, I had watched anime before on both Fox Kids when I was real little, and on Toonami when I was older. The thing of it was I never really tried to seek it out on my own. If a show that I was watching stopped being aired then I stopped watching it. That all changed when I played the Galaxy Angel Sim Date when I was still a freshman in high school. It was on Newgrounds, which was at the time the most popular site for dumb flash games and videos. Of course, being the pervy high schooler that I was, I wanted what was in the adults only category. That's where I found Galaxy Angel Sim Date. Now I don't know exactly why but for some reason I really came to love that game, and I was very interested in finding what it was based on. That led me eventually to the anime, the manga, and much later to the visual novel. The internet can be a weird and amazing place. The Story (Tact Mayers, the man himself) The Transvaal Galaxy has been gripped in terror! Exiled Prince Eonia and a huge fleet of unknown vessels have undertaken a massive Coup d'état against the Emperor of Transvaal, and the White Moon! Hope is not lost however, the famed Angel Wing has managed to escape with the last of the royal family aboard the Elsior. Now the fate of the entire galaxy is up to...you, apparently. You are Tact Mayers, a greenhorn layabout who usually leaves all the important work to your adjutant, Lester Coolduras. Unfortunately for your dreams of sloth you are chosen for a daring rescue mission. It's not all bad though as you are also given command of the strongest strike force in the galaxy, powered by only cute girls. Life, it takes and it gives. Basically, the plot is that you must attempt to outrun Eonia's forces for as long as possible. At first, the Angel Wing might not trust their new fresh off the boat commander but who knows, it's a long voyage, anything can happen, even dare I say it, love. Galaxy Angel is without a doubt a pure space opera. It wears it on it's sleeve and dances with it in the dark. It might not be the most intricate of plots but it is still filled with a lot of powerful moments. But just who are the mystery girls? The Characters (Forte and Mint to the left, Vanilla and Ranpha to the right, and Milfeulle in the middle) Characters are important to any story and in my humble opinion these are some of the best, even if they might not be the most well developed. More than that I've grown up with these characters so I know them backwards and forwards. Each Angel pilots their very own Emblem Frames, which are one of a kind ships powered by the fabled (and convenient) Lost Technology. Here is a breakdown of the characters and what they pilot. Mifuelle Sakuraba: She pilots the Lucky Star and is the epitome of a air headed girl. She loves to cook and is gifted with a unholy amount of reality breaking luck. Milfeulle also happens to be the "main" girl of the VN. Ranpha Franboise: Ranpha pilots the Kung Fu Fighter and is basically your typical energetic, and tsundere girl. She works out a lot and loves fortune telling. Forte Stollen: Forte pilots the Happy Trigger and is in many ways the older sister of the group. She is obsessed with ancient firearms and is an avid collector. Vanilla H: She pilots the Harvester and is the youngest and most quiet of the troupe. Vanilla is able to control nanomachines incredibly well and is an excellent healer. Mint Blancmanche: Mint is the pilot of the Trick Master and the source of all good things in this world. Mint is a telepath and because of this does not trust anyone easily. She is obsessed with cute and sweet things. The story is centered around them with each chapter centered around a specific member of the team. This gives you a chance to get to know each of them while getting closer at the same time. At a certain point the story it is possible to choose a character and their specific route opens up. There are also quite a few noteworthy side characters like Lester Coolduras who engages you with a galaxy spanning bromance. By some weird design the combat effectiveness of the Emblem Frames are determined by the mental states of each pilot. Your job as the commander is to basically make nice with them or else their performance will suffer. This leads me to one of the more unique aspects of Galaxy Angel, the gameplay. The Gameplay (Combat Inaction) The gameplay is pretty basic but it works. After every mission you briefing you give the Angels their orders and they engage in ship to ship combat. Each Emblem Frames have their own special advantages and weakness. For example the Kung Fu Fighter is the fastest but has the weakest shields while the Happy Trigger is the slowest but with the most firepower. Each ship also has a special ability that can be used effectively once a certain bar is filled up. When it does you can give the Frame a command and they will use it against the enemy. (The only one that does not is the Harvester, Vanillas special attack heals all the of the Frames.) Like I said before the gameplay is very bare bones though they often throw some new elements in play like stronger enemy types or more complicated objectives. There is one last ship that I have yet to bring up which is the Elsior, which is another piece of lost technology and the flagship that everyone resides in. It has extremely weak firepower though it mostly makes up with that by having the power to completely heal each Angel Frame. It's poor combat effectiveness and slow speed is easily the most annoying parts in the game. With it's awful firepower it is always advisable to keep it way out of enemy range. While that may be easy enough at first there are several missions when you must escort it through enemy lines which can be incredibly frustrating. The graphics also reflect the fact that this Visual Novel was released in 2002 so don't go expecting that much in that way. Still, the battles can be very thrilling at times and I think it would be quite a loss if the gameplay was not present. The later games really improved the mechanics quite a bit while keeping to the core concept. The second aspect of the game is moving around the Elsior and talking with the crew. This improves the relationship and combat effectiveness. It's pretty basic stuff and it is real easy to see just how each angel thinks of you. (Oh yeah did I mention that this is all determined by a telepathic space whale?) Final Thoughts What can I say Galaxy Angel is still one of my favorite Visual Novels and I have a great deal of affection for it. It might not have the most compelling of stories, but it does something extremely well and that is make you feel invested with the characters. It can be pretty powerful stuff when they start to actually like and trust you. This is the first part of a great trilogy and it serves as a wonderful jumping off point. The only problem with the game is that since it was released in 2002 it is quite difficult to get working on modern computers. Despite that setback I would really recommend checking out. You might come to love it too.

  2. Well, I regret my previous post now. I completely forgot that people who haven't read MLA yet might read it. Oh, well. Let me try to convince you that after all things people write you should at least give this series a chance. First of all, I think, you shouldn't trust my and other people's opinions on Muv-Luv Extra too much. It's a comedy, the most relative of all VN genres, and if it didn't work for me, it doesn't mean it won't work for you. There are plenty of people who say they enjoyed it. Also, the current translation is definitely much better than the one I was reading, so you should also take that into account. Just don't go for any of the side routes, at least before you finish the main one. They have some relevant information to Alternative, but it isn't very important, and the only side route I read was simply bad. I'd say, go for the main route first (Sumika+Meya, they divide by the end, but essentially it's the same route), then, if you really feel like it, try one or several of the side routes, then get the second ending of the main route (for a different girl) and then continue with Unlimited. Essentially, you only need to read the main route (and it isn't particularly long), but if you are really bored at some point, I don't really see any problem if you start ctrl-skipping some parts. As for Unlimited, I don't really get most criticism for it. Sure, it's worse than Alternative, but I still enjoyed it. And the ending is pretty good. And Alternative, yes, it's simply that good. Again, I can't guarantee that you'll enjoy it, because there are plenty of people who didn't (and some of them are pretty toxic about it). You say that you enjoy utsuge, and this is definitely a plus, but, again, I can't say anything for sure. But there's a very good reason why it's the highest rated VN on VNDB. I can say it that way: it is simply the most emotional VN I've ever read before. All Key VNs are nothing compared to MLA. They simply make you cry, while MLA makes you come through a range of completely emotions, leaving you completely exhausted in the end. It also gives you an alternate history world with extremely though out history and political situation, and I actually found myself thinking that, yeah, if the world is attacked by aliens at some point, these are the things that could possibly happen. Also, I really don't want to accidentally spoil anything, but I'll say it this way: I loved Extra by the end of Alternative. That's it. And no, I don't' think it matters if you enjoy mecha or not.

  3. this. I do like sprites, and i like their expressions. a tad annoying to constantly be looking up after and or before every sentence. purple softwares method makes it so I can look at the sprites more often and i approve.

  6. Maybe I should’ve waited a bit after the last delayed introduction, but, well, I’m at five hundred posts and I can’t let this milestone pass without celebrating. And, yeah, I’m totally not that late… Like, really, I’m not lying… (I hope they don’t look at my registration date) So, anyway, my name is Dreamysyu (not really) and I’m just another somewhat active member on Fuwanovel who never did his introduction before. In real life I’m an MSc student in Theoretical Physics. I love science, naturally, and some other things, like history and fiction of different kinds, including visual novels, obviously. I live in Moscow, Russia. Well, technically, not in the city itself, but in one of the smaller cities in the agglomeration. On the other hand, it pretty close and I travel there several times every week, so it wouldn’t be much of an overstatement to say that I live there. I’m reading VNs since 2013, but I’m more of a casual reader and don’t really have much free time, so my total number of finished VNs is probably lower than you’d expect it to be from that. Or, at least, I’m totally incapable of using my time more or less efficiently, considering that recently I spend more time browsing this forum than actually reading them. My favorite VNs are Umineko, Muv-Luv Alternative and SubaHibi, followed by Fata Morgana and Tsukihime. And, yeah, considering that at first I used less legal ways to get VNs than I do now, you can probably guess how I originally found this site, but I honestly don’t remember when I discovered the forum. I remember coming here a few times before that, but I started actively lurking here a few months before I created the account in November 2015. I didn’t really post much at first, but recently I feel like the the evil spirits of the Moon possessed me and made me increase my rate of posting from a few posts a month to several post a day. Yeah, that’s literally the most probable explanation for what happened. Or, maybe I’m just bored, you know? So, anyway, that’s it for my introduction! I hope I didn’t bore you. Let’s all get along in the future!

  7. Back when Fuwanovel was really active back in 2013, 2014 and 2015; we had topics like this all the time. Like 5+ a day sometimes, lol. Honestly I miss those days of Fuwa. It really shows how much the forums have slowed down that we only get like 1 of these threads a day. But I'm glad that people are trying to keep the forums a live. Its kind of like keeping a fire alive. And damn, the fire of fuwa used to be raging! But yeah, one of the problems I had when the forums was that active was that I spent a lot more time talking about VNs then actually reading them, lol.

    What are you playing?

4 months after buying it, and shelving it twice (to play other VN's) ...... finally got the True End in Clannad. And now I can stop crying all the time! Think I cried upwards of 25 times....

  11. NOW LIVE ON KICKSTARTER: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/borokaistudio/omega-pattern-visual-novel OMEGA PATTERN The content of this post is available in Spanish on http://www.patronomega.com/es/kickstarter/kickstarter-patron-omega/ KICKSTARTER VIDEO FIRST PART The Omega Pattern's first part and free demo are already available on Steam (it has been Greenlit by the Community), Itch.io, Google Play and the App Store: http://www.patronomega.com/en/#download ANALYSES Cubed3 (7/10): "Omega Pattern HD is delightful, interesting, and above all else, worth the price of admission... It's going to be a lot of fun to see how this story progresses as the future episodes come out, as Shaiel's story is definitely going to feel unique amongst the many other entries in this genre." GameRamble (7,7/10): “The story is genuinely intriguing and the choices you get to make actually impacts the story, which is a nice touch... The soundtrack is really solid... Fans of the genre who don’t mind trading in length for replay value should definitely try out Omega Pattern.” Softpedia: “A very promising visual novel... Play your part in a strange world controlled by a powerful corporation and make the desired choices to steer the plot... Fight against an evil organization bent on ruling the world... Nice artwork and many choices to be made.” CGR (7,75/10): "At this current point, Omega Pattern is already a great title and it has me awaiting what comes next for my multiple versions of Shaiel and the decisions that have affected the men that he has become." WHAT MAKE IT DIFFERENT? Omega Pattern seeks to offer a more personal and deeper experience in the visual novel genre. In Omega Pattern, we ‘reinvent’ the visual novel concept by giving you the opportunity to choose the main character’s personality in a prologue where you will recall his past. Every personality defines a character with his own storyline which will change as you advance on the story and keep making decisions. The results will depend on the consistency of the character and the impact that your decisions have in the world. In addition to this, the narrative style is different from other visual novels, letting you get into the main character’s head instead of being a mere spectator. We avoid the use of tedious descriptions to explain what’s happening and make use of the main character’s reactions and thoughts to make the scenes more realistic. For example, we prefer to use ‘Shit, my jaw!’ instead of ‘He punches me on the chin’.” GAMEPLAY Omega Pattern is a Visual Novel which offers a variable multiple-choice decision system. This means that both the number of decision points and the number of choices or options that you will find in those decision points may vary according to your previous decisions during the game. SYNOPSIS The world where the Omega Pattern story happens is seemingly normal, similar to the one we live in. However, genetics and fate mean that a few individuals are born with a kind of Pattern or special brain signal which lets them develop unique and varied psychic skills that are determined by their life experiences, which form their behavior and character. From the shadows, an organization known as Bioagora controls the world according to its own interests thanks to the power and influences that they get, in part, from their Agents. These Agents are people who own the Pattern and have been coerced, bought, forced and even captured against their will to be brainwashed and indoctrinated, so they can faithfully serve the Bioagora. Shaiel (21 years old), a man who possesses the Pattern, has found himself forced to live in secrecy in order to avoid falling into the hands of the Bioagora. However, as time passes, it gets more difficult to escape from a power which is increasing exponentially. Seeking for allies has become an unavoidable, and it seems that the only alternative available are the Celtas; a small and poorly organized group with unorthodox methods, whose plan to face the Agents and restoring an order different to the Bioagora’s seems near impossible. As the rest of the population stay impassive in a gray world, Shaiel will have Shaiel to play his cards right and find out the truth hidden by the Bioagora, the Celtas and himself. FEATURES Become the Main Character: Decide what to do in the most relevant moments of Shaiel’s past. This will determine his current personality and therefore his psychic abilities and the decisions that you will be able to take in the future. 3 Story Lines: Access to 3 significantly different story lines, which means that you will have a high replay experience where you will find suspense, action, drama, comedy, horror and romance. +6 Hours: The variable multiple-choice decision system that we have implemented for the first part of the visual novel can grant you up to 6 hours of gameplay or more. Mobile Optimized: You will enjoy the same experience both in the Desktop (PC and Mac), Mobile and iPad versions. Full HD: 2048×1536 resolution for iPad users and 1920×1080 for Desktop and Mobile users. Manga Anime Style: 100% original illustrated material. Original Soundtrack: An OST that creates the perfect atmosphere in every situation. GALLERY CG Event Gameplay Decision Game Menu Main Menu Settings ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK Game Rumble: "...A really good soundtrack. None of the thirteen songs featured on the soundtrack sound like your typical visual novel fare and they all complement the mood of the game nicely. From sinister tracks like “Gurdjief Lessons” and “Death Valley” to melancholic ones like “In Memory Of” and whimsical ones like “Kids,” the songs are all really good..." Listen to the OST! THE FINAL PART: WHY KICKSTARTER? This Kickstarter campaign expects to get funding for the big final part of the visual novel. Borokai Studio is an indie group and Omega Pattern is his first indie visual novel. Besides being indie, Omega Pattern intends to be a very long visual novel (+40 hours). It’s impossible to afford this kind of project by an indie group without economic support, and here’s where the first part of Omega Pattern appears. We covered the first part expenses and released it without Kickstarter, Patreon or any kind of crowdfunding campaign because we wanted to show you the main concept of Omega Pattern (a visual novel where you define the main character’s personality and Pattern) before using this kind of resources. Omega Pattern is not an episodic visual novel. Our current intention is to release DLCs and bundles with the full Beast, King and Astral routes. The decisions you make in the first part give you access to these routes, but they won’t affect their course. This means that you don’t have to replay the first part again when we release the routes DLCs. The decision system that we’ll use for the routes won’t allow us to separate them into more parts since we want that every decision you make can cause an impact on the story as it advances as well as in the endings. Every route will be different and we’d like to give them an estimated duration of 12 hours or more. But don't worry, if we don't manage to fund the final part in this campaign, we will divide the final part into several DLCs depending on the amount pledged by the bakers and we will relaunch a new Kickstarter campaign with a lower goal in order to release the next Omega Pattern's DLC. COST BREAKDOWN Art (35%): Over 85 CGs, 85 BGs, 8 new major characters and several minor characters. We could decrease the number of BGs and increase the number of CGs. Writing and Translation (30%): The original Omega Pattern's script is written in Spanish and we will have to cover an English professional translation. Programming, implemmentation and administration (10%). Music (10%). Kickstarter (10%). Rewards (5%). STRETCH GOALS The Omega Pattern Kickstarter's main goal is 33.000€. If we reach it, we will try to improve the visual novel with these stretch goals. 38.000€: MORE ART. Over 100 CGs and 100 BGs. We could decrease the number of BGs and increase the number of CGs. 43.000€: R-18 CONTENT. We will include some erotic, soft and non-explicit content/scenes (Hollywood style). 65.000€: PROFESSIONAL ENGLISH VOICE ACTING. REWARDS Thank you (1€): Every dollar matters! Thank you very much! 12. I've been browsing through Purple Software's releases on VNDB, and I've noticed that starting from Hatsukoi Sacrament in 2010, they would deviate from the standard "text box at the bottom of the screen" formula and experiment on text boxes placed on the characters themselves. Though this practice wouldn't become common place in their works until Mirai Nostalgia in 2011 where it's been improved upon. Since then, all of their releases post-Mirai have used this new formula. Chrono Clock being the one I remember the most. Personally, I like this format because it diverts my eyes to the character sprites while reading, making it easier to notice their expressions instead of having to look up constantly. What do you think of this format? Do you think it's effective or not? Also, what other companies have utilized this style of text boxes other than Purple Software?

  13. You're asking JAST to localize an over 50 hour long VN... Well, we're gonna need all the luck we can get.
    1 point
  14. Fan translation or no, I still think Fate should be localized officially. The series is regarded as one of the best anime series of all time according to the western fanbase, and not localizing it officially would be skipping on a perfect marketing opportunity for the fans. Type-Moon, get on it!

  15. I'll tell you a VN that's very popular and has an anime series as well and isn't yet localized officially - Fate/Stay Night. I bet this one would sell well officially, despite already having a fanTL. If any VN really deserves an official localization by now, it's Fate. The fact that nobody yet managed to get the license for it is pretty telling (I heard it's expensive AF).

  18. Hi guys, I'm Ben and this is my first visual novel that I've made by myself one-man-band style. I'm a professional concept artist who's been working on other people's projects for 8 years and finally decided to make something for my own. I hope you guys can help me on this journey Honest critiques are welcome. The game is coming out on Steam soon, you can visit the page here. Plot: Set in Salem, 1692, at the height of witch hysteria, a family is found murdered in their home ans suspicion quickly falls to something supernatural behind it all. This is a murder mystery where you will investigate the crime and sieve through the evidence the witnesses provide, deduct an outcome and piece together the bigger picture. There are multiple characters that you can accuse of the crime and will need to be thorough to connect all the evidence together. Thanks for looking. Here's some screenshots for ya

Congratulation to your 500 post and finally you did your introduction. Now we are both mates regarding delayed introduction. Yoroshiku Well, since I heard this Soundtrack: Last End Conductor (Awesome!) I am planning to read Umineko as soon as the ps3 patch is finished. Before I forget it, welcome to Fuwanovel Senpai and I, too, hope we will get along in the future. PS: Well, I wanted to like your post but I run out of likes today. Therefore I am going to do it later.

  22. This isn't anything new - a bunch of studios experimented with such ways of storytelling. LittleWitch was the most notable company - they developed their own FFD (Floating Frame Director) engine to handle such text bubbles and used them in their games since 2002. Only when you don't know how to handle their engines. Most games don't have them hard-coded and FFD's text bubbles are fully customizable.

  23. Well that's another new record lol. I thought that my introduction was pretty late, but turn out you'll even later than me in regard of making introduction. Although then again, there's never be too late in regard of the introductions - it's still pretty notable though considering that it's the 500th post lol. Anyway, welcome to Fuwanovel even though you already been active for quite a while. Hope that you'll gonna have more fun at Fuwanovel here. PS - As for my introduction, I did logged in back at December 2014 only to be occasionally posted here. But then it change when I'd made the introduction thread back at January 2016, and from there I did many posts at this forum.

Yeah i'll like to think that gaijin hunting is a myth, your situation seems more believable since randomly meeting someone and hitting it off for the night happens anywhere, that's just an organic connection. Rather that gaijin hunters pursuing their foreign prey with fervour just for the sake of them having foreign blood . Thanks for sharing! [i used up all my likes for today ].

  29. That isn't really a problem, because localization doesn't normally work that way. Rights are typically sold off by language and region. Note that of all the games Hikari Field licensed, exactly one of them is getting an English version. Moonstone has a relationship with MangaGamer, and that relationship is working out extremely well for them. Every one of Moonstone's 4 english-translated games is very popular. So unless Moonstone doesn't know how to negotiate contracts, they still have the rights to give to MangaGamer. I'd say that the game actually has good odds of getting licensed, even if Magical Marriage Lunatics somehow bombs (which I very much doubt). Sales of Supipara volume 2 and Trinoline will probably be enough to push Volume 3 over the finish line.

    What are you playing?

So, I'm playing The Seven Districts of Sin, a VN apparently no one ever heard about and developer of which was desperate enough to send a review copy to every Steam curator vaguely connected to VNs, and after like 20+ mins of playing stumbled upon this: Well... This is either going to be brilliant or try way too hard and fall flat on its face pretty soon. Voice acting is decent though...

  31. You know, whilst this thread initially brought to mind to people running into me in the midst of an H-Scene, that is likely not the worst situation. When I'm particularly excited reading a VN I act like an absolute madman. I often read the characters' lines aloud, shout, make up new ones, react to them, etcetera. This, unfortunately, is quite audible in my younger sister's room, so she's the person most subjected to my lunacy. My parents occasionally walk by the corridor near my room, and should they catch me in the middle of a fit they sometimes even interrupt to ask me what the bloody hell I'm doing.

  32. I was reading an H-scene that other time and you could say that I was "engrossed" in it. My older brother walked into my room and he started silently at me and the screen for a full minute or so without saying anything. Then he sat through the whole scene next to me and left when it finished without saying a word. I still see the disappointment in his eyes each time he looks at me.

  35. They're not classical at all but the Wind Up Bird Chronicle and IQ 84 Haruki Murakami are two really superb books. I would also suggest the Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolano just because.
