  1. Maybe I should have waited until it was a full year, but eh, I was bored. And I reached 400 posts, celebration song! I noticed that I'm here in this damn forum for 10 months now, not so much compared to the senpais but still some accomplishment. Hell, I never thought that I would come back here so often, must be some kind of curse. Or maybe, gasp, I actually enjoy spending time here! I could use the time to read visual novels instead, but time management was never my strongest asset. Well well, I was all nostalgic and then I remember that I never did an introduction thread. Until now. But at this point is kinda pointless, because by now, people must be aware of how I really am. Or not, I don't know, not sure if anyone stalks me. I hope not. Anyway, just for formalities, hi, name's Maggie, 24, Virgo, blood type O, Castlevania is my game, Carnival Phantasm is my anime, Pandora Hearts is my manga, steel is my body and fire is my blood. You must have already see me around either doing serious posts about girl games or shitposting in general, so if you remember me for either of those, I'm glad I did my job well and my contribuitions to this site weren't in vain. And it will be on that time that I'll be an important addition to this team. So, with nothing more to discuss, I decided to look back in what I did here in this past year, like a review of myself. So let's see... - I did a lot of VNR troubleshooting back when I joined and saw at least 67 noobs that create an account just to ask why the text didn't appear. Pick the text thread, pick the text thread yo, pick the text thread. I said that so many times, I can make a rap with it; - Why didn't I just ignore them? Because I actually found a fujoshi friend doing it, back in May I think :3 We still talk to this day, every day; - Speaking of friends, I'm glad I found some nice, adorable and slightly weird people derailing threads and shitposting here. So yeah, even shit had it's purpose; - I got myself a harem even; - I think I talk bad about Comyu some 103 times; - And talk good about Shingakkou other 134 times; - Played a lot of free BL and otomeges that I found around; - And 179 new games ended up in my backlog, rip; - Not counting non VN things, le double rip; - Made 248 edits to my posts. What even is english? - My most liked content was in the "realistic romance in VNs" thread. And I just said "No, and that's why it's good". See people, sometimes less is more! Or something... - I saw things... I wanted to unsee things... - Actually, I guess I became a bit more degenerated these last months. It's you guys fault; - I'm also way less productive now; - Joking, I love this place. (Obs: this last one may vary with my mood) Yeeeep, sounds like that was a busy year! I hope to be with you guys one more year! Or be able to free myself from this place and be productive agaaaaaaaaaaaaain! AMA, except my three sizes. And post some pretty boys while you do so, please, thank you.

  2. Despite there being a few good editing blogs on Fuwanovel, there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of translation blogs. I think part of the reason for this is that editors in the fan translation scene are often doing things the translator could very well be doing themselves, often to the detriment of the final product. Look at, say, the “big back” entry Fred wrote. Now tell me why this issue couldn’t be avoided back at the translation stage. There are two reasons why you would do this: one, you don’t know Japanese well enough to understand what is actually meant, so you put down whatever it says literally. In this case, the sane way to handle the issue is to ask someone who knows Japanese better than you for advice. Two, you’re just lazy. Who actually thinks “the date changed” sounds right in English? An edge case of this is prioritizing speed; Ixrec and MDZ* both prioritized speed and neither had very good results to show for it, but they did complete things. Personally I still think this is ultimately lazy; it is significantly more simple to translate literally than to try to actually write well. In this case, ask yourself if you really want to produce a shitty translation. What I’m trying to get at is this: if you actually want to produce something good, you can’t just leave writing the thing up to the editor. Editors are not miracle workers; they have to deal with what they’re given. Furthermore, many editors working on fan translations, and well, translations period, are not very good at the job. Any time you leave something bad in, there is always the possibility of it sticking around in the final product. I’m not saying you have to be perfect. I’m saying this: for the love of visual novels, try. If you ask me, before you hand your script to the editor, you should have already done an editing pass on it. Or two. The lines should connect with each other rather than float like islands in a sea of prose, there should be at least an attempt at character voice, and all ugly stock translations should be kawari-fucking-mashita’d, much like the 日付 at midnight, with extreme prejudice. Sometimes you’re still going to come up short. Sometimes it just won’t sound right whatever you try. That’s when you should pray that your editor knows better than you – leave a note at the line explaining the problem, move on, and hope to hell that your editor is actually good enough to work it out. That’s what the editor is for. The editor should not be translating from weeb to English. The editor should not be doing your job. *Its not just the fan translation scene that does this, by the way – there are companies, like Aksys, which demand its translators write a colorless literal translation to be punched up by superstar editors later. Unsurprisingly, they’ve put out some real stinkers; I have a lot of respect for Ben Bateman’s work on 999 for this reason. View the full article

Happened to me [all i said was derg will be a good mod and seniorblitz for walkthrough], well this is probably going to get removed too. Btw, you guys should probably add [to the main post] that confidence votes for applicants and comments from non applicants will be removed. Its kind of crappy to have my comment removed when I'm not saying anything negative or breaking any site rules.

  11. I have been around for quite a while, and have always wanted to do more for the site. This is a perfect chance for that. I was among the people you recruited for the now very dead Chatmodchan project. While that didn't last long, I feel like I did a good job in terms of moderation back then, and I have only learned more about the site etc since then. I'm very familiar with the forum rules, and report any case I see of people breaking them. I have Fuwa set as my homepage, so I'm pretty much always on while I'm awake.

  12. So yeah, they have a new company and surprisingly they already have five projects planned. One of those was Fureraba which is already both of fully translated and edited, and planned to be released at March. As for me, well I think it should be good if we have another VN localization company I guess, although some of you may have different opinion in regard of this though. Oh, here's the link to the company website if you curious, and here's Chuee tweet in regard of his involvement below. PS - I realize that in regard both of Saku Saku and Hoshimemo some of the members here have the issue. But still, I'd quite interested with Fureraba for a while so I would like to look forward in regard of this the past issue aside. PPS - As for my opinion in regard of the licensed title, I would say that other than Fureraba I also interested with Sanoba Witch as well because it's from Yuzusoft which is should be good, and the alternative costumes for two of the heroines remind me of magical girls lol. As for Hello Good Bye, looks like it'll be an interesting title so I'll keep my eyes on that as well especially with tarot style in the opening (Remind me of Persona). For the last two, I think Suki to Suki to Sankaku de Ren'ai (I'll call it Sukiren) was quite a bit unusual if only apparently it have some parody in regard of the otaku culture. No comment from Melty Moment, other than it looks the least interesting to me for now.

  20. What wrong with it? Moe genre sells better than another pseudo-serious vn's. There are plenty of people like me who prefer "standard moege VN's with a cliche story" even after hundreds of them (btw, for me "Hello, good-bye" less appealing than others). So, calling it a "bad decision" because "you" don't like that genre, sounds like a desperate cry. It is like complaining that they do not choose otomes, traps, bl, yuri and etc. I won't say moege ultimately better that nakige , but many people preferring one for other. Like Aksys games has there niche with Otome games, now we have moege company. Not to mention people who reading vn's like date sims for escapism and can't handle psychological stuff with depressing ending after depressing ending. (I think there plenty of them, looking on moege sales) So, NekoNyan, you have my acknowledgment of your decision and I'll buy 4/5 of your games (Should find a info about Hello, good-bye endings...)

  26. Too much Moe for me. Seriously 4 of the 5 games are light-hearted SoL, Comedy and Romance VN's. At the first impression they all look like standard moege VN's with a cliche story. I mean it's okay if they want to bring out more VN's to the west but they shouldn't just focus on one type of VN's. It's just like they want to say: "We should just focus on one target-group!" ... In my case I would be more happy with more Drama and less Comedy or a unique Romance VN with a great story. I am not really a Fan of too much comedy without a story or with just a complete SoL & Romance VN where nothing happens till the end. Like I said it's okay if they want to bring more Romance VN's to the west but for the future I hope they pick more interesting VN's. Before we start to think about the future we should wait if the translation is actually good. At the moment I am just interested in Sonoba Witch and Hello, good-bye. In the last few days I started to read Dracu-Riot and I really like this game. Altough I hate Noble Works. But Yuzusoft did actually a good job in Dracu-Riot and I am quite looking forward in their other games. Hello, good-bye seems like a interessting romance VN with a good story.

  27. Well, look at this. Another random TL company that I probably can't trust dipping their toes in the water of localization. I don't know why 2 companies have popped up over the past few months, but it's clear that they're targeting moege, which by all accounts is a genre I hate and wouldn't care if nothing from the genre ever got localized again. Anyways, the guy who's running it had a real shaky time with HoshiMemo, so I doubt anything that they'd put out right off of the bat. I do admire their ambition, but pushing more moege into this cesspool of a niche hobby definitely doesn't have me excited. Save for Hello Goodbye. I'd actually try that one out. Tis unfortunate, but we plot lovers will just have to wait for a random localization company to specialize in those types of games. The only problem is how little money they'd make from localizing such games
    1 point
  28. Well, after reading chuee's amusing ranting, I'm pretty sure the translation will be shaky at best, but probably nothing we can't handle. Though with a name like that, it's unlikely they will ever localise anything even remotely "serious", sigh.

This one is so soothing: I really really liked it, and for whatever reason it's staying in my head rather persistently: it's probably my current favorite (with Childhood Friend from Princess Evangile being a close second for that spot). For all time favorite, it gets harder to decide, but I really like how this gets so frenetic: it especially seems to fit the later parts of the VN. I really like how the song (like Skyclad Observer) builds to something of a climax, and I wind up having to listen to it twice or thrice before moving on to the next song. This is probably my favorite song in the VN, and the VN had a lot of really good songs (Amadeus, Future of Spirit, Messenger, and Re: Awake amongst others). Admittedly these are probably "safe" choices, and perhaps somewhat stereotypical, but the thread asked for favorite songs from VNs, and I staunchly maintain that Steins;Gate is my favorite VN (and one of my favorite pieces of any entertainment type) so it's only fair for it (and its universe) to feature so heavily in the selections. Man... I think of the songs in F/SN this is the one that hits most in the feels. It's... Even now it's hard to listen to after having finished the VN. It sounds so morose and bleak (to me at least), and I can't help but think of

I mean the guy is so helpful and active here, also he's approachable so new members wouldn't have a problem going to him if they have issues or questions. Think the guy fulfils fuwa's criteria of how a moderator should be. Seniorblitz should be a walkthrough mod if a role like that exist, that place belongs to him now lol. He's been pumping that board full of info for awhile now. Even if there isn't a role like that, he should probably get some recognition for it lol, like how jun got that little nod in "post pictures your like", that powered by thing. Anyway just suggestions from a regular member . Well Kaguya already knows about Derg actually lol.

  38. First, I should mention that I'm a huge fan of David Weber. Even his crappiest book is still interesting to read (the crappiest book being Out of the Dark, an Independence Day-style story where the world is saved by Dracula, lol). However, the Honor Harrington series is my favorite series written by him. Beginning with On Basilisk Station, this military sci-fi series begins focused on the character known as - obviously - Honor Harrington, a young warship captain getting command of a new light cruiser. Honor is the post gender-disparity female of the feminist movement's dreams, a woman born and raised in a society where gender limitations were nonexistent and nothing is thought of women going into the military. Weber, for all his faults as writer, has never shown the prejudices a lot of male sci-fi writers tend to have in this area, and Honor is by far his most popular and powerful character. She begins the series as a commander, the lowest rank in the Royal Manticoran Navy allowed independent command of a starship, and, as she takes trip after trip though the fires of war's hell, she gradually climbs the ranks of her star nation's military, suffering pain and loss, as well as joy and glory in equal amounts. Honor doesn't go through life unscarred... she is a rare individual who can't use regen therapies and can't accept her own cloned tissues, so her tendency to get her ships shot to hell around her has definite permanent consequences to her body and life. This isn't some two-dimensional warrior who slays enemies in one-sided competitions and comes out the other side covered and glory and only possessing superficial scars. Honor is the type of person who, because of her integrity and essential strength as a human being, continually manages to put herself in the worst kind of situations. She doesn't always win, more of her people die than don't, and she suffers from all the guilt you could possibly imagine a morally upright young woman could suffer in such a situation. In fact, that is David Weber's brilliance with this series... Honor definitely climbs the social ladder during the series (even by the third book, she is already pretty high up there), but her essential humanity and her growth as a person gives true life to a series which could easily (and often threatens to) turn into a dry recitation of destruction and death on a literally interstellar scale. Weber freely admits he intended to kill her off in the seventh or eighth book, but the fans kept her alive through petitions against that decision, lol. All in all, that has turned out well. What was originally a simple and direct conflict between a constitutional monarchy and a socialist expansionist empire gone mad has expanded to a fully galactic scale story, opening up several side storylines (the Crown of Slaves being the most beloved of those). While Honor still remains a central individual in the series, things have long-since grown too complex and grand in scale for any individual to control its flow. I can say straight out that I love this series and don't regret investing the hundred dollars or so it took to get all the books currently released. There have been a few poor entries (the most recent one is widely disliked for being a rehashing from a different perspective of events in the previous book), the series as a whole is one that any military sci-fi fan should at least try to read. The societies involved, the events, and the characters make it worth it, even if it is obvious Weber has no intention of concluding it any time soon, even after over fifteen books.

    My Favorite Villains

Villains have always fascinated me for as long as I can remember. Maybe it was the way they operated, the way they moved. Their goals always so divergent from the heroes or so eerily similar that it made you question who you were really rooting for. Almost every story has em' or inserts something to take their place, such as society, nature etc. A villain right can give you someone to really root against, or for if you are so inclined. They can drive the story along like no other and pull the hero into the most strenuous and exacting endeavors. A villain done wrong however, can have all the impact of a wet fart in a scorching plain. What makes a good villain? I think a good villain is made up of five things appearance, presence, voice, power, and goal. I think these are essential for a villain to work in a story. Without these traits you might as well just drag up from the earth your cliche mustache twirling villain and prop him up for all to see. So without further ado here are my favorite villains and why. This isn't a comprehensive list and the order is nonessential. 1. Slade Slade was a incredible villain and he is essential to why I still count Teen Titans as one of my favorite shows. He had everything I wanted in a villain. What I most loved about him was voice, power, and presence. First off was his voice, Ron Perlman did a amazing job with the voice of Slade. He lent Slade a voice of menace and absolute confidence that broke time and time again upon the Titans backs. His power to was impressive. He could go toe to toe with any of the Titans and beat them and it took all of their power to stop them. His presence was also incredible he dominated every single scene that he was in without question. 2. The Joker Joker is the perfect villain and I think he shines the brightest in the animated series. He is a perfect counter to Batman in every way and is the absolute opposite of everything that he wants to protect. I like the animated Joker the best simply because of Mark Hamil. I truly believe that voicing him is the best thing that he has ever done. 3. Vernon Schillinger (OZ) Schillinger easily represents everything I detest in a person. He's an out and out Nazi, and as cold and callous as they come. Yet it was his detestable nature that made him such a good villain. In a show that's known for it's brutality he was easily the most vicious. What really made me like him was the brief glimpses of something resembling humanity that he would show. To this day it is hard to look at JK Simmons and not see Schillinger, no matter how many goofy Dads he plays. 4.Frank (Once Upon a Time in the West) In the movie this is how Frank is first introduced it's such a brilliant and brutal scene that really impacted me This early act of callous cruelty gives him a malignant presence in every scene he is in. He's completely willing to do anything and everything to get what he wants. Henry Fonda gives him a air of quiet detachment and a sense of invincibility. 5. Perfect Cell I love Perfect Cell because he is such a amazing antagonist. He has the abilities and weaknesses of all the greatest warriors. He is confident and arrogant without overdoing it. So many villains like him are just over the top that it just becomes laughable. It was great to see him evolve from his imperfect state to his perfect one. I also like that his goal was simply to find a worthy opponent to test his power on. 6. Mr. Dark (Something Wicked This Way Comes) Mr. Dark is another good villain that is so understated and yet so powerful. He operates a carnival that promises people their deepest wishes and feeds on them. Jonathan Pryce does an amazing job of giving him such a threatening edge with just a few words. 7. Cluny the Scourge Now Redwall had a lot of great villains but Cluny is always going to be my favorite of them all. He is such a perfect adversary he is ruthless but also clever, brutal yet cunning. His mere presence inspired instant fear and his drive inspired hundreds. 8. Kirei Kotomine Kotomine was a perfect villain in Fate/Stay night and a great foil for Shirou. What really made him a great villain in my eyes was seeing his corruption in Fate/Zero. I also like that he sought the grail for the shear curiosity of what it would spawn. 9. Maou Maou is a great antagonist because he is constantly two steps ahead of everyone. He has plans within plans and he sets himself up as the adversary of Haru just for the shear joy of it. 10. Jack Of Blades (Fable) Jack Of Blades is one of my favorite villains simply because of his appearance and voice. That alone makes him such a menacing villain. I also loved the mystery behind his mask and background. Who was he before he found the mask? That question goes unanswered witch makes the allure of him all the more powerful. Well that's all the villains I can think of at the moment I will probably add to it later. What are your favorite villains? Let me know!

  43. It's been a while, guys and gals. I don't want to needlessly instigate anyone's hopes, but I'm here to say Tenkiame has been finally picked up for early pre-translation work! TL&DR Your prayers have been heard There is no rough estimate as of now and we're not planning to make any for the meanwhile. TL&DR It'll be finished, when it's done™. We're planning to translate the trial version first. Trial version covers prologue and common route; there are no h-scenes. We want to keep this as low-key as possible for now. We believe it's better to surprise people with sudden releases, instead of promoting the TL for months, just to unexpectedly drop it afterwards. We'll probably post more info here afterwards; it's high likely we might try to put up some simple website for the project, or at least a dedicated thread on the forums, but those will come with more concrete information. Cheers~
