    [Review] Danganronpa

This is my first ever review, so I would love feedback on this or even general advice on review writing! The Setting Danganronpa is a murder-filled mystery told over six chapters. Fifteen students are gathered at a school (ironically named Hope’s Peak) by an emotionally unstable teddy bear (Monukuma). The only way to leave the school is by playing Monukuma’s twisted game - to commit murder, without being caught. If the murderer is caught, he is brutally executed, if he succeeds he is set free while the remaining students are executed. Gameplay Chapters are divided into three parts, Daily Life, Deadly Life and the Class Trial. Daily Life is where you the initial character development takes place. In this phase you can walk around and talk to other people, advancing the plot. You are also given “Free Time” where you can get closer to specific characters, which then unlocks power-ups that can be used in the class trial mini-games. The “Daily Life” period usually ends once a murder occurs. The nature of the game, makes most of these murders of the “whodunit” type. These tended to be fun and lasted around an hour each. Deadly Life is the investigative period. You explore your murder scene and examine items as you look for clues to help solve your mystery. This holds several similarities to “Phoenix Wright” investigations. The Court-Trials were basically the final showdown in each chapter where you solved the mystery. These were fast paced and interesting. The trial-system itself was horrible though. It was littered with some of the most irritating mini-games of all time. Several obvious statements that can be inferred from the evidence, have to be explicitly found through multiple mini games. On the other hand, the comic-style closing arguments was done very well. The PC port was horrible. The controls were not mapped out well at all, and to advance text, you are forced to use your mouse rather than the enter key or spacebar. This was very irritating and definitely affected my overall experience with the game. Soundtrack The BGM is very catchy, the kind that ends up sticking in your head for a while. While not all of it is amazing, there will probably be at least one or two tracks that you will enjoy. Visuals The CG’s and graphics are beautiful and the video-clips are well made. One thing that could have been better was the gore. All blood and wounds, were a bright pink color. If it actually looked like blood, a lot of the gruesome deaths would have impacted me a bit more. The Story Danganronpa starts of very strong. The very first case tries to drive home that anyone can die. I enjoyed the first two cases the most. The third and fourth cases were good as well, but by then the number of people remaining had reduced making it easier to identify the culprit. The last two chapters, were basically the same case. While I enjoyed them a lot some things have still not been explained. . Overall several good mysteries with innovative solutions. Also Danganronpa is Kinetic in nature. If you are given a choice, you either advance, or it loops back until you pick the right choice. The epilogue doesn’t really conclude the story well and is very open/teaserish in nature. (Most Spike Chunsoft games seem to do this, like 999) The Characters Most of the characters were strong personalities, the kind which would naturally end up being the center of their groups. Gathering them all in one place would naturally cause conflict. Most of them exemplified a single quality to an exaggerated degree, almost to the extent where their whole personality could be built around it. Each character was unique and interesting, which lead to interesting motives as well as murderers. While I could never support the murderer, I found myself understanding and sympathizing with the killers as well as the victims in some of the cases. Pros Great mysteries Well explored characters Fun investigations/Large World to explore Court System/ Case Arguments Monukuma Cons Pink fake blood/gore Some plot points left unexplained PC port Court System/Bullet Time Battle (This had no purpose but to infuriate anyone playing the game) Verdict – 9/10

Allo all. I'm rather new to the VN scene. I was never into reading books, was always a gamer. Then about 7 years ago I got addicted to watching anime. A year ago a friend of mine forced me to go thru the list of anime's and mark off those that I've seen. At that time the list was 246 titles that I checked off. so.. haha.... yeah I'm probably well over 300 now. Some of the anime's that I enjoyed I found out originated from VN's. Which ended up sparking my interest. The first VN I played was Cinderella Phenomenon. I figured it was free and what could it hurt to try it out. I really enjoyed it. I've tried other free VN's, some were ok and others not really my thing. So not that easy for me to dish out money for a VN since there been more free ones I didn't like then liked. Anyway, as a hobby I enjoy making games. I've made a few simple games like tetris and 2d platformers. I'm considering goofing around and attempting my own VN, but I lack experience? I guess? Some friends told me I should join a community and try gaining some knowledge. So hi! lol Would appreciate any thoughts about other VN's you might think I'd enjoy considering I really liked Cinderella Phenomenon. I'm a complete newbie after all.

  5. As for the matter of H patch for Steam version, I believe that Mangagamer will do like usual by adding the H patch for free, see Sorcery Jokers and Dal Segno for examples. Of course obviously like usual Mangagamer gonna have their own 18+ version available at their own shop as well. Oh, here's the blogpost in regard of this news. PS - As for me, well kind of interesting see that there will be five couple that were developed along 10 VNs, with the new couple here so I guess we'll gonna have Sonohana All Stars here lol.

Does not like pink blood. 0/10 Review. Doesn't get the "essence" of the game.

  8. WHAT'S UP MY FELLOW VITA LATECOMERS Muramasa: Rebirth for a beautiful handpainted artwork Vanillaware metroidvania. I've mainly used mine for digital PSP games so far, like Corpse Party and Persona PSP. Also I bought htoL#NiQ and Yomawari but I haven't checked them out yet. Oh and I second the other posts.

  9. There's a handful of VN experiences for the Vita like Danganronpa, Steins;gate 1+0, Zero Escape, Root Letter Bunch of JRPGs, Persona 4G, Trails in the Sky / Cold Steel series, Ys for the epic stories and characters, Atelier series for the casual slice of life adventuring, Hyperdimension Neptunia for the memes, Sword Art Online for the Asunas On the more fanservicey side we got stuff like Senran Kagura, Gal*Gun Double Peace, Valkyrie Drive, Dungeon Travelers II

  10. There's a huge amount of otomeges for Vita! I recommend Code Realize, it's pretty good! The three Danganronpas, plus Ultra Despair Girls, are also there, if you did't played them on PC and like investigation games. On the non VN side, if you like JRPG, there's also a good collection of them, like Persona 4 Golden. I also like to play metroidvania games on portable, like Shantae or Salt and Sanctuary. And if you like rhythm games and weeb songs, there's also Project Diva games and Persona 4 Dancing All Night. Yeah, I also bought a Vita very cheap last year, so I'm still hyped about it, even if it kinda is a dead console XD Enjoy!

  13. I love reading newspapers, going to malls and buying print magazine subscriptions, so I thought: Why not buy a mostly-abandoned portable console? Turns out the Vita is fucking rad and a used one is about 200 cheaper than a Switch. What should I be doing to make the most of the Vita? Anyone wanna join my Vita coven (a few years too late)?

  15. Nutauku's page only mentions the three girls but VNDB shows around five including the trap's so I don't know why they cut them. I have both of those but only read Go Go so far and they where pretty good, I recall some of Frontwing's releases are stepping up and improving there's like Corona Blossom but it still looks slightly weird until you get used to it.

  16. The technical perfection of VNs such as Tokyo School Life or Go Go Nippon!. The 2.5D animations in those VNs are great.

  17. The only thing I can think of with something similar to what you're on about is this - https://www.nutaku.net/games/download/girls-can-be-pervy-too/ where you can create your own scenes after finishing the main routes. I haven't played it myself though so I can't say if it's good or not but the concept alone makes it interesting.

  18. I will name 3 because they serve different functions: interface function, narration style, and plot. Completion percentage. Some VNs have extremely long routes. If you read without checking some sort of source, it can get annoying at times to read something. Connected routes. Of course it is nice to read routes as completely different stories, but personally I love stuff like Multi Route mystery. Perception based choices. I mean such choices as Umineko's final/only choice. Those choices that do more than just determine heroine.

  19. This wasn't a bad ending, by the way. This happened in the main plot. Ah, so it wasn't real VR. I got confused after people started mentioning Muv Luv, lol.

  20. You said one, but... XD A built-in flowchart. It's also very good to see your progress, it's a must have for completionists like me. And I also liked that Comyu had a chapter menu that let you jump to EVERY SINGLE SCENE, super nice! I also like any VN that provides any kind of variation to H-scenes, else they get quickly repetitive (choices that let me choose who's gonna be on top, choices that let me ship any two people from my gang of friends, etc)

  23. Congrats on the new Vita. That little handheld really doesn't get the appreciation it deserves. Regarding VNs, I'll also put another vote in for Code Realize. I've played a few Otomege and by far C:R is one of the best, if not THE best. Also if you're looking for something a little different from the standard JRPG I would recommend htoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary and A Rose in the Twilight. Both are great puzzle games that emit a very quiet, eerie atmosphere that can't be matched on the Vita.

    Random VN: Venus Blood Brave

It is pretty funny... and I think it is right up your alley. However, I'd honestly recommend Hypno or Frontier over this one... I may have rated Frontier lower, but that was before I became *smiles wryly* accustomed to the tentacle thing. For that matter, Empire was better. For some reason, the goddess-corruption games always seem to have better characters and a better story. This one was amusing, but the story as a whole I'll probably forget inside a few months. Currently, I'm about 70% sure this is a prequel to Hypno, based on certain things I came across in the Law route (the existence of Tactica technology in Brave's world, if in a cruder form, the Tou no Kuni heroines' ending, etc).

There are more briliant ones from SG 0, but this is my favorite. Then ofc, G-senjou no Maou's OST is whole perfect, no need to point out any particular song. Clannad's soundtrack was also nice, but most of the songs don't mean anything without the story, so i'll just point out this one that's packed with emotions

    What are you playing?

I think you should do Shiratori first, because there is one thing that is different and you would feel weird reading Shiratori's route after. If not for that, you could actually skip it, her route isn't that great, Kyousuke is just like a spectator most of the time

Themes from Hapymaher, which has the single best VN soundtrack I've heard. Last of all Devils Devel Concept... Barbarian on the Groove does good work.

Spot one, a rose guns days song. Seriously though the whole rose guns days OST is great. I could pretty much post anything from it and it'd be one of my favorite songs anyway. This is actually just one of many excellent random battle songs in it. Maybe I should have picked one of the amazing lighthearted songs that play instead of this. The whole OST has such a nice, unique feel to it. This Hanachirasu track. Lots of different opinions about the game, really short though. Always was a remarkable track to me, and I never really found anything similar to it. And to finish up, a Senshinkan song. Absolute despair. Embrace the edgyness, I love it.

I adore Yoru no Himawari from Subahibi: Fate/stay night's New Dawn (the title screen theme when you've completed the vn): Everything from Symphonic Rain: The House in Fata Morgana OST is stellar: I have a soft spot for Narcissu Side 2nd's OP: And I love the wonderful FES from Phantasm (Chaos;Head, Steins;Gate):

Also F/SN's Emiya but the best version of that is from Prisma Illya and not any of the VNs, which is kinda disappointing.

    What are you playing?

So, two years after finishing the first Grisaia, I finally started playing Grisaia no Meikyuu, and I suddenly realized how much I missed this series, and I don't even consider myself a diehard Grisaia fan. Also, I again realized that reading the all-ages version of Kajitsu was definitely a mistake (and that comes from a guy who used to unconditionally skip all h-scenes he encountered). But this series, basically, works much better in 18+, and the first h-scene I encountered was genuinely funny. I hope, the more serious parts won't disappoint when I get to them.

    To Heart 2 Xrated

To Heart 2 Xrated (https://vndb.org/v20) Game Description Following her graduation from middle school, Konomi Yuzuhara enters the same high school as Takaaki Kouno, her childhood friend. As the new school year begins, they meet their childhood frien Tamaki Kosaka, as well as well as many accquaintaces. Unbeknownst to the group, their encounters with each other will soon lead to many memorable adventures. Ending Guide This walkthrough covers the PC version of the game, that has a total of 9 routes (not including bad ending). There's a total of 9. 6 from the start, 2 unlockables after 1 route completed and 1 unlockable after 2 routes completed. The game has a map system that shows you where the girls (and Yuuji) are. If you want to enter a route you'll need to (basically) stalk the girl you're after. Individual Route Guide The names for places are in JAP so I had to figure out how to name them. Help with this is appreciated. Sentences in " signs are choices. Yuzuhara Konomi Kosaka Tamaki Komaki Manaka Tonami Yuma Sasamori Karin Kusakabe Yuki Lucy Maria Misora Himeyuri Sango/Himeyuri Ruri Kusugawa Sasara Bad End - Kosaka Yuuji Last Words Huge thanks to ittaku for translating this almost 100k lines beast and for the Lucy section. The rest was done by me, through trial-save-error-load from save-repeat proccess ( ) Edit August 29: It was discovered that you need to clear 1 route to unlock Lucy and the Twins. Thanks to ittaku for the help in ensuring this. Enjoy

  37. Confession: I'll be immigrating to Canada next September for university. My three main options thus far are British Columbia (UBC), Toronto (UofT) and McGill. Toronto is the most prestigious university in Canada and is pretty much my dream school, and I got admitted this week. However, it costs almost $70 000 (Canadian dollars) a year. That's enough to buy a two-bedroom house in Turkey. Even though my family is quite well off, we'd be stretching our finances to the limit for me to attend UofT. Compare this with McGill, which costs only $45 000 a year. It's madness for me to even consider Toronto in comparison to that (a difference of $25 000!). UBC is somewhere between the two. (Didn't receive an offer from McGill or UBC yet.) I want to tell my parents to send me to McGill, but the thing is, I deeply want to attend Toronto still. The decision is weighing on my mind. If I decide to go to McGill, I might have to hide how disappointed I'll be over being unable to attend University of Toronto and I don't want to burden my parents with that...
