  1. People keep posting their top 10 lists but frankly I can't relate to all this shit. Like, actually reading visual novels before you blast your opinion of them to the skies? Holy shit it's like I'm in good practices central or something. Since that's way too much work and the only way to get me to read things is to literally bait me with stupid bets like "I'll read some of your recs if you finish this buggy totally not moege that you probably can't text hook lul", here's my list of things that I'm totally going to read, sometime next year or so, so I can finally actually talk about them without spewing uninformed bullshit. 1. Muv Luv Series Widely respected, universally 7/10, porn patch never (but it'll probably be out in two years if we're lucky!). It even has a certified fresh translation, so maybe I won't feel like editing every single line. I suppose I should say something about the actual vn but I'll just assume you don't live under a rock instead tbh 2. Dies Irae I was totally intending to read this when the porn patch came out, but then the porn patch took forever and was shite and also I stopped respecting half the translators as much after trying out their version of seabed. So now I'm too elitist to read the loc, and uhh it's kind of hard in Japanese so maybe in five years. However YOU are probably not as picky as me so you should probably read this thing in a year or two! I suppose I should say something about the actual vn but I'll just assume you don't live under a rock instead tbh... actually I'm not sure if anyone has explained it properly without spoilers anyway so whatever really. 3. きっと、澄みわたる朝色よりも、*ahem* uhh yeah Asairo blah blah blah it ends with a fucking comma who DOES THAT? I already put Dies Irae here so I guess I should continue the Kamige train. This VN apparently would be really annoying to translate because it depends a lot on kanji on multiple deep levels or some shit, also the writing is memed to be real good (have u heard of Shumon Yuu), also it apparently made otakus mad because of how it had too few h scenes or something. Since you're a proud western elite free of any silly otaku impulses you're bound to enjoy it. Too bad I'm probably too shit at Japanese to enjoy it. Maybe in four years! 4. Mememasa TL out in 2030 if Peter Payne hasn't died from a cringe-induced heart attack looking at J-LIST ads before then, oniichan. Oh yeah, the ge. Uhh it's probably based on the idea that there are no true heroes, no weapon kills only the malevolent, and it's chuuni or something. Also it has only sad endings apparently. My edge boner is literally piercing the ceiling just thinking about it tbh. Maybe in 2.5 years! 5. Danganronpa Okay so I realize that danganronpa is pleb but it seems to have a somewhat unique aesthetic and I want to at least be able to have an opinion on it, especially when it's popular with people who don't normally read VNs due to their completely reasonable dislike of typical forms of the medium inherent plebness (actually honest question do I even want to associate with these people oh well). But I'm too lazy to set up the fan tl and reading a NISA tl is beneath my dignity so I guess I'm fucked for now. Is there even a jp pc port? I'll do it one day, mum. 6. Cross Channel Wow this one's actually translated, twice, too bad both the tls are terrible. YOU HAVE FAILED ME GEORGE HENRY SHAFT BUT I FORGIVE YOU BECAUSE YOU TRANSLATED THE MOEYURIKAMIGE HANAHIRA AT ACCEPTABLE TIER FOR MOE FLUFF. Written by the other highly memed vn writer after shumon yuu and ou jackson and masada and wait shit umm anyway tanaka romeo is like well known or something also he had an ln or two anime化'd so he's probably actually good (wait shit LNs get turned into anime all the time damn). Uhh so I hear cross channel is a comment on otaku and also the protagonist is insane or something and cool stuff happens or something, that sounds great, also the lolicons are diseased meme is good. Maybe in 3 years! 7. Umineko I was waiting for this to get released by MG but I'm told the fan tl group was mostly holding the strings and they don't seem fully approved by the people I know. Anyway people say Ryuukishi レナ has an either shit or unique writing style in Fapanese and it would be great to be able to have an opinion on this, and if the tl isn't great why not harvest this additional benefit right? But otoh I'd be reading a mystery vn that's longer than the organ that ended the life of mr hands (do google that, very good tbh) at like half speed. Maybe in 1.5 years! 8. Harukuru Ah yes, the vn that starts with like 13 h-scenes that are apparently funny and later goes sci-fi on you or something. Written by certified insane author Watanabe Ryouichi and consistently stema'd here and there, and possibly getting translated but there are no news and everyone's wondering wtf happened. The only real thing stopping me is that I should probably finish Subahibi in jp first tbh, so maybe in a year! 9. Horobikuchiru Sekai ni Tsuioku no Hanataba wo (This is my "doujin cred" title for the list ok) I've thought for far too long about a tl to the title, which should probably be something along the lines of "A Bouquet of Memories in Remembrance of this [Broken, Decaying] World" where the broken, decaying part is what I'm not sure about because how do you even horobikuchiru (the vndb page has it as two words but that seems wrong to me, horobu is in -masu stem form which is commonly done if one wants to combine verbs like say 踏み込む). Uhh yeah so I actually read the prologue and I kind of want to tl it as a teaser one day because it's basically about this scientist that's like "SCIENCE IS AWESOME, BUT I'M GONNA DIE ONE DAY AND NOT SEE THE EVEN MORE AWESOME SCIENTIFIC BREAKTHROUGHS OF THE FUTURE, WHICH IS VERY 悔しい (SORRY KUYASHII IS VERY HARD TO TRANSLATE), SO ILL LEAVE MY WIFE AND CHILDREN BEHIND AND GO IN THIS FORWARD-IN-TIME-ONLY TIME MACHINE, BECAUSE HOLY SHIT SCIENCE IS AWESOME AND I WANT EVEN MORE OF THE AWESOMENESS HUMANS ARE FUCKING GLORIOUS". And then you get six different stories from the future and it's like hard sci-fi and whew it's kinda annoying to read. Maybe in 2.1 years or something. 10. Aiyoku no Eustia Idk what's even stopping me tbh. Oh yeah this one has a translation project in progress which looks merely meh tier rather than actively bad so to any eops that are still reading this (why?) there's hope for you too! If I like it I'll have something I actually disagree with Clephas on which would be good because he's sort of a meme among jops. Oh yeah it seemed to have edgy shit and philosophy and politics or something and a cool fantasy setting. ------- You think I'm memeing, but this is actually my 本音 Read lynne

  2. Seeing that we have many threads in regard of recommendation, and the sources was a thread that asking if we should have a new 50 VNs list that was created by mod Kaguya, I thought that perhaps I should make the one as well. As for the list, I decided to joined both of the old and new lists because after all even some of the old stuff should still have some relevance even now. Anyway, for the personal list list I decided to just limit it into no nukige and no yaoi for now here but feel free to suggest those later, and I'll consider to add those in the list and change one of initial title to honorable mention. So obviously for the initial lists I'll just list 50 translated VNs for now - also I'll just limit it up to 2017 releases for now. Oh and before forgot, the number here was not referring to my preference here. Also when you in doubt in regard of play that or not and didn't want to browse VNDB, I'll add the scores for both of Bayesian and average from VNDB. Note that the score was pretty much quite subjective, so don't let the score deter you to try the VN all right. 1. Umineko (Average 8.75, Bayesian 8.72) and the sequel (Average 8.72, Bayesian 8.67) 2. Symphonic Rain (Average 8.22, Bayesian 8.14) 3. Ayakashibito (Average 7.75, Bayesian 7.65) 4. Quartett (Average 7.28, Bayesian 7.20) 13. Kamidori (Average 8.20, Bayesian 8.17) 14. Yumina the Ethereal (Average 7.47, Bayesian 7.39) 15. Romanesque (Average 7.36, Bayesian 7.20) 16. Yurirei (Average 7.95, Bayesian 7.77) Keep in mind that in regard of the score, it might be change in the future. I think that's all in regard of 50 VNs that I could think for now, and once again feel free to suggest what kind of VN that I should add here. Hope the list would be help to anyone else here who need some VNs recommendations. Edit - Now that I think of it, I should add that it's only English release here for the title in the first place. So no Japanese only release here, and that's final.

  3. probably, here's a fairly inner circle jop by my judgement some random quotes they found amusing there's also this picture which only has like one actual problem in it (jlpt literally has no speaking part), arguably two because of not reading moege without a hooker but honestly who cares lol

  4. The whole hype around DDLC is actually a pretty sad thing if you think about it, because it shows that although many people seem to be interested in VN's they don't seem to be willing to pay for it. DDLC got an 'Overwhelming Positive' rating with more than 55,000 Steam reviews which is amazing considering that's more than most AAA games even get. Now, the next VN kamige on Steam is Everlasting Summer from... 'Soviet Games' which still has over 25,000 reviews with a very good rating which is again free to play. And then we have Tricolour Lovestory which has much less but still an impressive amount of over 7,500 reviews. It would have surely gotten much more, but the developers dared to charge 99 Cent for it and so it get much less. And now let's have a look on the inferior 'VN garbage' on Steam starting with Stein's Gate which is still looking decent with more than 3,000 reviews, but then it goes down with stuff like Clannad which got at least still more than a 1,000 reviews. It then gets embarassing with Grisaia with about 500 reviews, Dies Irae with about 250 reviews (and its rating isn't even particularly good), Fata Morgana also just with about 250 reviews and Subahibi didn't even make 200 reviews. Nekopara Vol 1 kind of stands out since it got more than 10,000 votes despite charging a 'ridiculous high price' of 5 € on sale. So the unfortunate gist of all that is, that a big Steam success has pretty much nothing to do with quality and just indicates that the title is dirt cheap or even free to play for max success.

  5. I felt like giving a you all a preview of the first quarter of 2018, after reading this blog post: I generally choose to refrain from posts like this that cover the future of an entire year, but I feel that I have a good grasp on what is coming out over the next three months that is worth paying attention to, based on my own experiences. Grisaia Phantom Trigger Vol. 4 This is something to look forward to for anyone who has liked this series so far... more assassin action based in the same universe as Kajitsu and the others. Yorite Konoha wa Kurenai ni Let's get something straight... I don't have an absolute faith in Lump of Sugar as a company. If anything, their work over the last five years has proven to me that this is one of the least predictable moege companies out there. For every great VN they make, they make at least two games (usually three) that are pure crap or mediocre. The reason I keep going back to this company is for experiences like Hello,Goodbye, Tayutama (the original, not the sequel), and Sekai to Sekai no Mannaka de. This game looks like it is based in the far future of the same universe as Tayutama, where coexistence between humans and the spiritual beings have stabilized somewhat (based on the content from the Getchu page). As such, I'm willing to give this the benefit of th doubt, despite the somewhat sour experience I got from Tayutama 2. Sora no Baroque So far, Light has yet to produce a bad game. I have no reason to think this game, another work from Light's more prolific second team, will be an exception. For chuunige fans, this is the game to pay attention to for the first part of the year. Chuuni Hime no Teikoku With a scenario team that was involved with both the original Love Kami (the later games had a different set of writers) and Haruka ni Aogi, Uruwashi no, this is definitely a VN that will be worth looking at, despite being the first work of a new company. Of course, it could end up being delayed for the seventh time... it wouldn't surprise me at this point. Shin Koihime Musou Kakumei Son Go no Ketsumyaku (note: The title used on vndb is incorrectly romanized) Originally planned for a release this upcoming summer, this game has been moved forward to February. Like the release of Gi's rewritten route this past summer, we can look forward to a nicely reworked version of the original Go route from Shin Koihime Musou, which was already an excellently-written work. Hataraku Otona no Ren'ai Jijou 2 This is worth noting because this series (of which this is the third game, despite the numbering) is one of the few non-nukige VNs out there that is set outside a school, and the previous games were enjoyable experiences. Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteiru Mitsu no Kiraboshi (note: again, what is with the shitty romanizations on new entries on vndb of late?) This is the third game in the Otoboku series, a third game made over seven years after the second, which was a kamige. Caramel Box has been a lot less prolific in the last few years than it was, so I was gleeful to find a new release by them coming up so soon. Unjou no Fairy Tail A new VN based in the same universe as Hoshi no Tsukurikata, meaning that we can look forward to yet more antics in a dystopian steampunk setting. Kieta Sekai to Tsuki to Shoujo This is the game for fans of Japanese horror mysteries to pay attention to this quarter. A dark-looking game about a young man who has returned to his hometown, only to find the people around him disappear one by one. Butterfly Seeker A new game by Silky's Plus. I am unsure if I want to hold out hopes for this game, as the writer is mostly an unknown, though he has worked for Liar-soft in the past.

  6. Before I read this 2011 game from Pil/Slash, a developer infamous for doing weird shit, I heard several people in the BL community say that this game is like the kamige of BL games. Sure, I took it with a grain of salt, since fanbases in general hyper-inflate scores like no tomorrow. Even the most popular Nitro+Chiral BL games are good but nowhere near kamige level. I accepted it and started this game, one that felt very different from your average BL right from the start. Turns out that they were right about the kamige-tier thing. The cover with our heroes. Written by Kusaka Matsuri, same scenario writer of Black Cyc's Gore Screaming Show, Shingakkou tells the story of Michael, a boy enrolled in a boarding religious school going back home for Christmas Eve... only to find his family murdered, an inverted cross painted with blood in the wall and the entire house burning down. And all of this is like, ten minutes into the game. With only his twin brother Gaby by his side, Michael turns his back on God and go back to the school only to get his revenge, because is there that the possible culprit is hiding, along with a secret cult that worships the devil. Despite the anti-religious feel of the prologue, and good part of the common route where Michael mocks internally all his old habits that he's only reproducing not to be expelled, the message of the game is really one of love and forgiveness, a journey where Michael needs to learn to believe in God, other people and himself again. It's really incredible the amount of development he goes through the novel, I was almost shocked when I went back to the common route after finishing a route and saw irritable Michael again. And fortunately, said development isn't just him growing a spine, because he have one from the start. And I'm not a religious person myself, but even then I found the message (and the endings) extremely beautiful and touching, and not a propaganda of sorts, like some exorcism themed movies. Gaby is the one on the left, Michael on the right. But! Before we can go to those positive messages, we have to pass some horror stuff. And with "horror stuff" I mean: bizarre surreal images flashing, unknown sounds interrupting the conversation, jumpscares, cute (but in the end not really) laughing coming from nowhere, tons of allucination sequences, have to hear a character called Lucifer say things he wasn't supposed to know and even the music stops when he does so. Remember to play it in bright places! Seriously, the slice of life parts are the calm before the storm and you'll feel it. There's always that sense of dread after the story takes its turn for the worse so Michael (and you) is constantly unease. So the balance SoL/Plot is handled pretty well. And of course they have to turn it up the horror part for the bad endings, making Michael goes insane with some supernatural brainwashing, showing us all types of surreal scenarios. And when you're feeling all down for failing the choices, the Devil even appears on screen to laugh at you. My first bad ending was almost a traumatizing experience. Speaking of the supernatural, lots of occurrences are blamed in the "powers of the Devil" and, lacking other explanations, Michael and you're kinda forced to believe that it exists and it can totally screw you over masterfully. If you're looking for a story where every single occurrence of mysterious shit is explained, better look elsewhere. Although I could argue that explaining stuff here would kinda ruin the atmosphere... A thing worth mentioning is that the game have a "grotesque switch" to censor the worst CGs (even if there's nothing really gory here, just nightmare inducing). But this also blurry the text of said parts, so for the sake of the experience, bear it and leave it on. Speaking of jump scares... This screams really pierces your ears. Now to the routes. We have five guys to choose, but only three are available at start. My recommended order of the first three is Leonid (long white hair), Cecil (short brown hair), then Neil (red hair). While I agree the last two should be locked, forcing you to play all of the first three seemed a bit too much for me. Finishing the game once is enough. Sure, all of the routes offer you something nice to read, but this VN is not a multiple routes mystery. There's one culprit and he's correctly guessed in every single route. So why this huge lock is in place I have no idea. The first routes can be a bit slow, especially if you go with my recommended order, but the game REALLY picks up when you reach Neil's route. There's some repetition even in the characters routes, but this game features one of the fastest skips I ever saw. But at least the game provides you with some choices that you can pick whatever you want and see some different scenes (that are very far from the choice itself, and not just some "different hero reaction right afterwards") that don't really affect the outcome of the story. So why did I put the two slower routes first? Because Leonid's twists works better if you read his route first. Cecil is a nakige-like (there's still horror parts, it's not all fluffy, but it's full of feels) route that can be read at any point. And Neil's the one most strongly connected with the main plot. So it feels a lot better to read all the plot at once, since the last two routes are also super plot heavy. And weird. Good weird stuff. The relationship between the characters moves in a pleasant pace, with their romance gradually kicking in. There's plenty of time for them to know each other and the sex scenes are usually located in the end of each route. It's nice to see the romance actually growing and not starting out of nowhere leaving you to believe that the heroes fall for the MC at first sight. Maybe some of those interactions are kinda overlong, but nothing in an annoying level. And since the boys grew in a religious school and the story happens in the '50s or so, expect them to be a bit torn about liking other boys, "this is a sin" is a sentence you'll see multiple times. Aaaaaaaaw... Sex scenes are divided in three categories: vanilla, rape and weird shit. They aren't thaaat important to the plot so it's safe to skip them, just remember that they happened, but I must add that at least the ones in the weird shit tier (one in a character's route, another in a bad ending) are completely disgusting and involve some non-human beings (just allucinations, but still horrible to look at) and should definitely be watched for nausea reasons. Disclaimer: I'm a bit weak so maybe it's not that bad... The vanilla ones are kinda charming since they are a bit awkwardly cute. Unlike most VNs that I read, the boys are a bit confused at how sex should goes. And that's perfectly normal, since they're innocent 16 or so years old boys that lives in a seminary with pretty much zero exposure to anything sex related (of course, because they're all goody two shoes, but the deliquent Neil is a completely different story and he actually have some experience). In one particular scene, the kissing just stops and Michael even wonders what he and his partner should do next. And also, you can pick who's the one that will be on top, a fine addition that pleases both people that want the MC to have the upper hand in the relationship and people that thinks it's weird tiny and cute Michael to top his tall senpai. And for sensitive people, look at these guys. Half of them are kinda girlish (Cecil is the most), so no excuses! Imagine some flats and play the damn game! The rape scenes... In fact, this game have a rapist route. I had pretty low expectations for this route, since one thing I really hate is rape-turned-love (when brainwashing and drama are NOT involved). But this game surprised me yet again because the rape scenes were handled with the necessary seriousness. Some particular scenes were disgusting to see and a bit painful to hear the voice acting (and it wasn't because it was bad acting). It was very very heartbreaking to see the victims confused, avoiding other people, feeling guilty and crying of shame. So when the victim decided to actually end the relationship because there's no love in it, my opinion of the route improved greatly, because sadly this development is incredibly rare. And this route's ending is so beautiful, bittersweet and satisfying that was one of the best endings of the novel, even better than the true ending. Another thing worth mentioning is that this game also contains incest. Twincest, in fact. And the excuse they gave to it is nothing like "but they're not blood related" (well, they're twins, that wouldn't work) or "it's fine because it's true love" and it was weirdly good for me. Just be prepared for some surreal, dream-like sex scene. Cecil is asking who should top. And after this question they tossed a coin, seriously. The art is a bit old shoujo manga style, and that maybe isn't for everyone, but it grew on me kinda fast. The sprites have lots of facial variation and even some minor characters have sprites, which is a plus. And we also have corpse-like-people sprites for some allucination sequences. It's super creepy. The music are all very good, using chorus to some great effects, be to sound solemn or creepy. Except the ending song, that is some upbeat thing that have nothing to do with the game, except maybe the routes that end very happy, but oh well. Voice acting was also very good, everyone is full of emotion and even the side characters do a nice job. Michael is probably the best, but damn, that principal was two times more annoying because of the voice acting. Lucifer's chilling voice is another worth mentioning, since the secret society parts wouldn't be as terrifying without him. Quote aside, this is the kind of CG that keeps flashing. Without spoiling too much, I need to share a few words about the ending(s). The villain was fearsome, I liked who they choose to be the culprit and see his plan working left me at the edge of my seat. But his motivation is really hard to get. His character as a whole is a bit hard to understand. The game gives you lots of backstory, and what happened to him over the years, for you to think about, but the workings of his mind was a bit beyond me. Of course, read with the possibility that maybe I'm a bit dumb. In the end, Shingakkou was one of the best visual novels I ever read and I really wanted to find another that packs such a powerful punch. It was pure when it was supposed to be pure and scary when it was supposed to be scary. The characters were amazing and the plot was good not only comparing it with the other BL titles I read (that would be an overkill for them), but even with other bishoujo eroges I played. BL titles are a bit niche, I know, but I can't recommend this game enough. Read it if you like horror and mind fucking in general. Avoid it if you dislike long novels (some parts drags a bit), incest, pedophilia and some questionable religion talk (Lucifer is the worst offender, obviously).

  7. Thanks >.< My first review didn't failed! Last time I checked, the translation stalled and people just went silent. But it's a damn long game, I can't blame them. I read it with my half assed japanese and some dicts for help with most kanjis and it took... way longer than necessary...

  8. Steam, and digital. I prefer to have my PC games on Steam, and doing it that way avoids issues with Kickstarters, not being able to find a copy, or the VN going out of stock etc. I'd do something from Humble Bundle or another site, but in both of those cases, I'd want a Steam key. It seems to mean only getting all ages versions, but I don't mind that.

  9. Great review. I've seen on VNDB that someone is possibly working on fan translation of this? Although I might just leave this one for that time three-four years from now, when I know Japanese somewhat decently and have already played through every worthwhile yuri VN there is, and I can finally delve into BL with no regrets.

    What are you playing?

I get that "there are better VNs out there that deserve much more attention than DDLC", but also keep in mind that it might be a good entry point for those who didn't know the genre. This is like with anime, when from time to time a really average one becomes mainstream who knows why and hardcore anime fans start yelling about how undeserving that is. Who cares as long as it introduces new people to a medium that otherwise they most likely would've never gotten into in the first place.

  13. Sure, but consider that most of those people would never read/see a playthrough of a VN in their life if it wasn't for DDLC. And the last time I remember something similar happening was over Sakura Spirit and it's hard to argue that Doki Doki isn't a huge improvement over that abomination. Well, maybe Hatoful Boyfriend had its 5 minutes too, but it was so absurd that I don't think it could genuinely draw people towards VNs or dating sims. As warped by internet culture as it might be, the whole DDLC phenomenon is a good thing for VNs and especially for the OELVN market. I don't think visual novels will ever go mainstream in the West, but they've just got tons of visibility and in a form that isn't all about cheap popcultural references and oversized anime boobs. I call it a win.

  15. Oh sorry, I was reading fast. Still, I was saying that the fan project that is taking long was announced as being "the best of the best". This does not relate to MG's version, which is the one I'm reading and enjoying. But since you ARE GOING TO READ them anyway, why should I bother?

  16. You're probably correct about that! Valerie was definitely the most direct of the bunch, but there were some hints, opportunities, and slightly suggestive scenarios in Kaori's route too. It's a shame that the ending was so abrupt and a total let-down, though. I felt like I was at the height of the story when suddenly the ending slapped me in the face. On a side note, I love how other characters got into relationships and had their own lives, in a way. Also, look out for my new blog one of these days then, Lesiak. I'd love to have your commentary! also i follow your blog senpai OELVNS are legit I have no experience with this one, and I'd love to give it a try, but unfortunately I speak Japanese as well as your average fish can climb a tree. The day a patch is released is the day I will start reading it though, I promise you that.

  19. A guess you have many IRL friends on your main Steam? I couldn't care less about mine being "stained" with weebness TBH, no one there knows me and, even if there was someone, the really embarrassing VNs aren't even available on Steam, for the most part.

And you didn't even reply to any of the information in it! What were you thinking! Apologize to the database god for making him store all these unnecessary bytes! Now!

  24. 2017 it`s not a bad year, it dont have much that stand out, but each month have consistently at least 2 or 3 decent titles, unlike 2016 that had more A titles, but some horrendous months with nothing to read.
