  1. Also I'm not sure why there's weird line breaks on the original fan translation screenshots, maybe it's the way I installed it on Windows 10..

  2. Just an online conversation I had recently with a friend. Me: I used to be a big fan of classical adventure games when I was in high-school. And the games I play now are even more niche. Him: Visual novels, right? Me: Right) How did you guess it? Him: I don't now lol. You seem like the type to like them.

  5. Summary: Broken Minds is a murder-mystery visual novel set in 90s Japan. When lonely 20-something Noa Karada finds herself being stalked by a mysterious killer in a rabbit mask known as The Orphan, she contacts the Yamagata Private Detective Agency for help. However, as her case grows more complex, the detectives grow more distant and eccentric. Perhaps Noa would’ve been better off never letting them into her life at all… Features: • Explorable environments • Inventive mystery-solving gameplay • Many choices & hidden secrets throughout • Six different endings • Over an hour of original music • That indie game sense of humor you've come to know and love • Intense rabbit-related imagery Available to Buy Now, or Play the Demo! https://lockedon.itch.io/broken-minds Screenshots: Trailer: ~ A Brief Note From The Esteemed Creator ~ Hello everybody! It's my first time on this forum, and on this site in general. I too want visual novels to spread in the West, and am excited by the possibilities of what Western-created VNs can be. I'm especially interested in visual novels that avoid common anime tropes and clichés, and break new ground with a unique tone, look, feel, and perspective. That's what I hoped to do when I created Broken Minds. It's been two years since I started working on it — I'm the sole developer, so progress was a bit slow. I'd really appreciate it if you told me what you think. Thanks! — LockedOn.

  7. Devouring fiction of different kinds. Learning some interesting facts about history (usually, through Youtube, podcasts and some articles). I like traveling, but I don't have many opportunities to travel nowadays, so I mostly get by with watching Youtube and exploring Google Street View. I also enjoy taking long walks in the parts of my city I've never been to before. From time to time I'm trying (and failing) to create something decent in RPG Maker. Physics... well, I can't call it my hobby anymore. I study it at the uni, and actually spending my free time on it? No. I know, I need to do it to become good at it. Though I do enjoy watching/reading popsci from time to time.

  9. The circle does that because that is the literal reason why Moenovel censored If my heart had wings in the first place. They wanted to market eroge to kids, for some absurd reason, and stuck with that policy. There is nothing special about that one CG with some soap over a nipple in LoveKami; even If my heart had wings had certain "slightly lewd" CGs still intact, just censored. There is tons of other CGs they just straight up removed from Love Kami, without replacing them with anything. These aren't all-ages ports, they are just the normal version with content literally cut out. You might be fine with having your games censored, but many people people aren't. I personally won't support a company that keeps doing this. Lucky for me I can read the original, but that's not the case for many western fans, so when a game gets censored without any way to restore the original content, it's stuck in that incomplete version forever or until some saint like Pabloc shows up to fix Moenovel's mess. (And people who are willing to do that are rare.)

  10. I'm a relatively young (under 25?) girl and I don't even usually like otome, ahaha. Generally I prefer bishoujoge but the story and atmosphere is by far the most important thing to me. I think people bringing up Hikaru games is a tad odd, though. I didn't get the impression that they are necessarily targeted towards either gender. With that said, they're amazing games that everyone should at least try

  11. Not sure if I'm active enough but... there's me! A weird 24 years old nerd girl who loves gaming (huge fan of Shin Megami Tensei and Metal Gear) and chinese power points! Sorry if this ends up being too long but here goes. I know I'm pretty much in the minority here, but I really like finding and reading different things. I didn't really started with otome actually, but with battle shounen chuuniges, and I'm glad I didn't stop there. But yeah, I also like BL and otome. I'm just not into moeges, since there's not enough guys story there and recently I learned to enjoy yuri, since it's so cuuuuute! But I'm open to suggestions, you can recommend me anything, I'll at least take a look! I loved Saya no Uta and Sekien no Inganock, and they aren't exactly targeted for girls. I'm not gonna lie, I like h-scenes just like you guys, but... I usually prefer when I see both participants on screen. I don't really read for self insertion. But this seems to be an otomege thing, since in 18+ otome games you can see the girl. So guess I'm not alone in that opinion. Now, games target at females... Yeah, people usually think date sims first, but if you dig deeper (like I did, since some years back I disliked otomes bc I thought they're all boring date sims), you'll find some good stuff! Of course, romance and power of love are important sometimes, but some galges do the same right? From memory, I can recommend Code:Realize, a steampunk game with an useful main character! The boys are really charming and Van Helsing is so like Archer from F/SN, god I'll die. Bocchi Musume x Produce Keikaku is funny and there's some nice ecchi CGs. And Shingakkou ~Noli me tangere~ is a super fucking incredible christian horror plotge, that's very different from your average BL game. And no, I'm not saying it's good bc "IT'S SO HOT KYAAA!", the execution of the plot is what's good, and play it just for porn, well, some of them are way too nightmarish, disgusting or symbolic, so... don't do that. So yeah, we're different but also alike! Or maybe I'm just weird.

  12. Personally i want to see moenovel fail with their next releases. The way they have handled the western vn marked just seems really bad. First there is konosora that they just censored the hell out of, so they could aim for the huge audience of 12 year old french girls just dying to get into enlish translated vns. Then it seemed like they had better strategy with the lovekami spinn offs, while the games weren't really good atleast from what we could see in the start it did not have an 18+ edition and therefore it didn't seem like anything was cut. Then they come out with info of the release of the japanese version which is the true full game with the 18+ content that seemed to have been planed all along. They even had the balls to promote the game for the japanese audience by using the fact that the game had been released in english and that the japanese people would exclusively get the 18+ content. Whatever their initial intent was this just looks really bad. First they made the people in the west think that what they got was the full game. Then they release the game for the japanese audience promoting their bellow average game through the fact that it had been released in the west and that the japanese would get a better edition. This action seems much more like an exploitation of the western vn fanbase rather than something made to please the fanbase. Looking at the cg from the 18+ version and knowing the general quality of the vns i don't think we missed out on much in the case of lovekami, however my principle is that i want the full experience of a vn with nothing cut. So atleast personally this pissed me of and from what i can see moenovel just doesn't seem to respect the western vn fanbase at all.

  13. Aside from playing VN, obviously, the reason why we are all here in the first place On my part, I love language, linguistics and on the more nerdy side, conlanging (that is, constructing lenguages. Yes, it is actually a thing). Also in the last 6 months I've picked up running as a habit, and now I am quite enjoying it. I guess another "hobby" of mine would be physics, but since it's what I actually study in college, I don't think it quite counts. Plus, I am actually a terrible student, but truth is I love physics nonetheless. So, what about you guys? I thought this would be a good idea to get to know each other better.

  14. https://fuwanovel.net/reviews/2017/11/15/karakara-2/ I actually really like this series. It's not deep or anything, but it reliably delivers the goods. Also, what's not to like about a kemonomimi harem?

  15. While the thought makes certainly sense, Japanese VN developers seem to 'click' in a different way and they usually seem to ask "Why not this older game?" instead. When MangaGamer got involved with AliceSoft they had to start with Beat Blades Haruka from the Bronze Age despite wanting a newer (or any) Rance title, and when they had a short deal with Lilith, they just got some titles from the Stone Age (which might be a reason why their relationship ended soon). Fortunately, we didn't have to endure a title from the early Cretaceaus period - meaning pre 2000 - yet. So Japanese VN developers seem to be rather protective about their newer and better titles.

  16. @Ryechu @Nier Reposting this from the other topic as well, because this is relevant: Update: There's a pretty good chance that Youkoso! Sukebe Elf no Mori e/ ようこそ! スケベエルフの森へ https://vndb.org/v20464 could get a localization and a Western release It's clear from what I've saw that quite a lot of people want this VN localized. What's more, I took a look through Lune's Twitter and found this: https://twitter.com/luneman_etc/status/721869236910448641 Judging from his surprise, until 4/18/2016, no one had actually asked him about localization. His response, however, seemed to be in favor of English localizations and releases. So that's a good sign for localization odds. I suggest that anyone who wants a Youkoso! Sukebe Elf no Mori e Western release like I do email [email protected] and ask them about it, and also to ask for this VN when Mangagamer's annual licensing survey comes up again. And SPREAD THE WORD.

  17. https://twitter.com/JRyechuR/status/931710867665817600 - I enjoyed working on both titles @Nier, just a general note that it's infinitely easier to work on games that are developed by companies a publisher already has connections with than to try to work with a new company. I didn't look too hard, but it doesn't look like ANY of the companies you mentioned have any sort of relationship with any English-language companies, subsidiaries and all. Again, didn't look too hard though. Marigold has been around forever, Bishop/AiCherry have been around literally forever. So has Anim. I have no basis for this, but I'd think that, if you partner with a company for a specific title, the first thing they'll ask is "Why not this newer game?" Some of the titles you mention are a few years old, and would fit into that category. Also, I edit what I enjoy. Your "bottom of the barrel" is my "sweet spot." I'll kindly ask that you not trash other's tastes If you have particular suggestions, might I suggest sending [email protected] an e-mail? I hear that's the preferred way to put up suggestions...

  20. While I mostly prefer the SP version it does feel bit weird/literal sometimes. The dialogue is generally better than the opening narration, so maybe the translator/editor was better at that kind of writing. SP seems to generally have kept more detail, and the longer lines that result need careful handling to look good. One line that exemplifies my complaints would be this, where I guardedly prefer Insem's version: The SP wording doesn't feel very good here; it smells of literally carrying over some jp concept. Overall there's a lot of dialogue in the VN though, and the improvement there looks considerable. Hopefully some later plot elements will also make more sense with the new translation, though idk man.

  21. I love reading and writing. I like reading manga watching anime, reading VN's. Gaming online (Dota 2). Cute games like Neptunia Reading fanfiction Playing the piano or harmonium Downloading Anime in ridiculously high quality and sorting it on my hard drive. Hentai I don't really wanna call my uni a hobby, but with the amount of time I'm spending on it, it's probably become one.

  22. I really like fiction and been wanting to write a few stories of my own (though I barely get any writing done). I'm also pretty interested in game design and development. For gaming I tend to lean towards strategy games, cause I like getting better at things, though sometimes I just try out games to see what the developers made. For outdoor activities, I was into longboarding in the past year or two.

  23. I play video games, read LNs and sometimes manga, watch anime, get into arguments just for the sake of arguing, repeatedly click and drag my mouse across various screens for no apparent reason, browse stuff on Amazon I'll never buy, go for a 30-minute walk, go to the movie theater for every Marvel movie in the last 3 years, watch shows on Netflix, browse Pixiv, shitpost on forums, shitpost on Facebook, and sometimes chat with friends on Discord (it's been a while though). Somehow I'm able to do all this while going to college. Don't ask me how.

  25. Okay, so they changed their policy from 12 year old girls to horny 14 year olds. The issue still remains that they are censoring all their games. You speak as if removing all 18+ content from eroge isn't censorship. If they made proper all-ages ports, that would be something, but they just straight up cut out all 18+ material. That's taking 3 steps back from all the good stuff that has happened to the western VN market the past few years, which is why this company angers me greatly. They represent what's wrong with VN localization.

  26. Agreed I thought it looked kinda interesting, and the main girls all look decent. No Loli which is always a plus, altho Saya maybe looks slightly Loli. But yea, this ironically looks like one I might not mind the adult scenes being included for, guess I will give it a few months to see if any unoffical restoration appears.. I havent even played IMHHW yet anyway =/

  28. Thanks. I love Ace Attorney, so it was pretty difficult not to copy certain gameplay ideas, especially "Pressing" for more information. I can see how the "mood choice" screen might resemble the "Mood Matrix" from Ace Attorney. I swear I didn't know about that when I designed it! However, it serves a completely different function, so I think I'm in the clear. I would say the main influences of the game are Danganronpa, Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro, 999, and Denpa Teki na Kanojo, but some Phoenix Wright-ish jokes might've snuck in there. — LockedOn.

  30. Fred, you always make me want to play things that I know I'll probably hate and I don't know how you do it. I mean, I never picked it up, but you made playing Wagamama High seem like an attractive idea. In retrospect I'm pretty sure you convinced me to play the first Karakara (which I'm grateful for, and actually really liked ). And I ended up dropping it even though it was overall good, but your review convinced me to play Chrono Clock too. At any rate, I went off on a tangent but great review as usual! These are always fun to read.

  31. Moenovel censored their second game in a devious way to try to cover up the fact they were doing it. They released it first in English, then several months later released it in Japan ... with h-scenes added and specifically said to only be for Japan. That sounds more or less like the kind of trick you'd expect to fool 12 year old girls, so yeah, I'd say they are

  35. I will make no effort in grandstanding by trying to defend my position by conjuring up some elaborate excuse, I simply like h-scenes because I'm a horny bastard. I've recently gotten allot of shit for rating some eroge higher than story centric visual novels on vndb. No, I don't think Funbag Fantasy has a better story than Kara no Shoujo, but they weren't aiming for the same goals. You can't rate a comedy on the same grounds as a action film, just as you can't yell at Stephen Hawking for being shit at baseball. I know that isn't what this topic is about, but I wanted to preemptively explain that before getting to the meat of the matter. The real question is how to feel about sex scenes in story focused visual novels. Well personally I like them, I'm the type of person that after becoming a fan of characters in fiction I look up fanfiction and doujin about them fucking. Having the porn in the source material beforehand is something I find incredibly convenient and a major time saver. Do I expect people to be fine with this? Absolutely not and I completely understand why people would dislike these elements in visual novels. Not everyone has a masturbation addiction to help deal with the condition known as "living", some people drink alcohol instead...... or they just like a great story to distract them from life. I find the question of whether "sex" can be used effectively as a narrative tool to be an interesting one. It's pretty common for people to cry out that an H-scene is "unrealistic", which always baffled me. We don't cry fowl when a FPS doesn't include a 40+ hour rehabilitation simulator after the player character is shot and no one complains that half of rom-coms don't end with a sloppy divorce. Fiction will always contradict reality on some level. I have never believed that a sex scene in any medium was "realistic" aside from Harry Turtledove books and quite frankly it kinda sucks. Realistic depictions of sex without dramatic flourishes are no different from depicting eating a meal or getting over a cold, it's just another boring part of life. Would I like more story centric visual novels with sex scenes integrated better in their plots? Absolutely, but as I stated before it's not that easy. Sex is a relatively boring act as a plot device, without going into FSN territory and inviting contrived reasons sex is required, it can only be used as a plot device in stories of youthful indiscretion, Romeo/Juliet rip-offs, and stories of jealously. In all three instances sex isn't even necessarily required and could be substituted with something else. Sex isn't as big as a deal as society makes it. Oddly enough I think the horrible act of rape is a much better plot device and something that society needs to be better and handling. This act of abject evil opens the door to a menagerie of storytelling opportunities, however if the writer isn't incredibly skilled and knowledgeable it will come across as a cheap shock tactic that is "trying too hard".
