  1. Again, main issue here is Licensing. Sometimes it's just impossible to get all the rights necessary to have this accomplished. And if you can't get the rights you are liable to be sued. Do remember that these official companies are profiting of these releases and as such the original companies that put in work are able to sue if proper steps are not taken. Fans on the other hand don't have this handicap and can literally, LITERALLY, do whatever the fuck they want. I could, theoretically, add in Linkin Park music as the OST or add in functionality to the game that wasn't there before. And not only do I need not get the rights to either the company who made the game, I don't even need to bother with music licensing. And in regards to ALL of this, if you are going to sit there and go "well I'm not going to spend money because there is a free, better, version out there" then do just that. I personally have bought many visual novels and never opened them purely because I played the fan translated releases when they came out but I do in fact want to support the developers. Just like games I used to pirate long ago I all have in either a digital or physical paid copy. If content is so important to you, get the fan translated edition, play the fan translated edition. But if you want to support the sales of a game you enjoy, go purchase it, regardless of which version you play. Add to this is a person didn't even know of everything you are talking about they would still purchase the game, play it, and that's that. It's not like the company is going "Hey everyone buying this product, look there is a fan version out there that has a shitload more content then the one we put out...just saying." If the customer doesn't know, the customer won't care. So you might give a crap because you know, but many others who actually buy the game might not know this and therefore don't care.

    Inferior releases.

Complaining about Jast's slow release schedule is like complaining about death, taxes, and the weather.

Never mind being sued. You never deliberately release something you don't have rights for, if you ever want to do business with any licensor ever again. NuTech found this out the hard way. And that's the difference. Fans can do whatever they want because there are no consequences to them personally. They don't need to worry about their reputation with the rights holders, because they're already ignoring what the rights holders want. They don't need to worry about being sued, because it's a waste of a lot of time and money (that the rightsholders don't have) and generates huge amounts of ill will. They don't need to worry about their company (which in the case of J-List has been around for more than 20 years) being destroyed, because they haven't got one. Fan translators ignore all the rules and do whatever they want. The same rules apply to them, in theory. Fan translations are illegal. But all the penalties for breaking those rules are toothless, when it comes to dealing with people like fan translators. There's no way to punish them. So they have nothing to lose. A real company will have its business destroyed if it ignores the rules. Fan translators have no such problem. So that's why the fan translation has all this extra stuff in it. Because the people who made it didn't give a crap about what the rightsholders wanted and just did whatever they wanted. And if that makes the fan patch look more attractive than the legit release, and that in turn causes sales to suffer? Then maybe the lesson Jast USA takes away is 'maybe next time don't license the game with an already-released fan patch'.

  5. Gokudou no Hanayome was released by Galactica (a sister company of Baseson and one of the many subsidaries of Nexton) back in 2011. I originally played it around the first time I started getting tired of charage... which was horrible timing, thinking about it in retrospect. To be blunt, I hadn't yet developed my current style of evaluation, and I didn't have as much appreciation for the good points of charage at the time, so I basically judged it based upon what it wasn't... an action chuunige. Needless to say, judging what amounts to a love-comedy charage by the standards of a chuunige is fundamentally ridiculous. The two genres are about as far apart as it is possible while both are still VNs. However, at the time, I didn't have the right state of mind to properly evaluate this game. Gokudou no Hanayome centers around Gokudouin Yuichi, the soft-spoken heir to the world-famous Gokudouin yakuza family... of which there are only three members (his father, Tokiko, and himself). Yuichi, having been distanced from the daily business of the family by his overprotective, somewhat yandere oneechan Tokiko, is living a relatively normal life until a young woman named Asahi, from another yakuza group that was once subordinate to the Gokudouin, arrives at his door, informing him that she is his fiance. Soon after, she is joined by the Italian mafioso Fran, Yuichi's cousin Sarasa, and the airheaded American sniper, Amelia. This VN tends to borrow the older style, with a combative relationship between the heroines (the current trend is toward friendly, non-violent rivals or 'only falls for him in her own path' styles) and a protagonist so dense he puts the anti-radiation shielding in a nuclear reactor to shame. The heroine paths are split into three arcs... one centering entirely on the mafia/yakuza aspect of things, contains Sarasa's and Fran's path. The second, mixing bits of science fantasy in, contains Asahi's and Tokiko's paths. Amelia's path is... a bit out there. Once you've played it, you go 'wtf', but I can honestly say I enjoyed all of the paths this time around. While the romantic aspects are mostly limited (the girls are pretty obvious about their feelings in the common route, so I guess they felt they could ignore that aspect in the actual routes) that didn't really break the VN for me. Overall... this VN is generally amusing, with decent comedy (mostly slapstick) and a wacky story. I honestly think that, with a little more attention to the details, they could have made this into a first-class VN, but as a charage, it is still worth playing. Edit: I meant to say this during the main post, but if I had to compare this to a VN or VN series, it would be the series that began with 'My Girlfriend is the President' by Alcot. The generalized atmosphere and some of the back and forth between the characters is very reminiscent of that and Naka no Hito. As a result, it made me smile more than once.

  6. MangaGamer's words on the matter are far more eloquent than mine. Here is the Wayback archive of an answer on their ask.fm account (which was deleted with no explanation a year or two ago):

Well part of this issue is licensing. The content from the console port doesn't belong exclusively to the original company, it also belongs to the company who publishes the game for the console (eroge companies generally don't have much money compared to so they need to turn to these guys for an all ages port) then there's also the voice acting which is tied to the studios and they can be pricey too.

  8. Funbag Fantasy is actually a pretty solid game. It's the best proof I know of that a game can be a nukige without being just a nukige. Also, I know it was already called out, but Koihime Musou is pretty darn good, and has a lot of heroines who fit the request, so I thought maybe I should bring it up again in case it got buried earlier.

  9. Ok you guys mostly have me convinced, will add it to my list, I think I may have come across it before but not given it any thought as it was titled Funbag Fantasy lol. Tho I am not the biggest fan of harem-style fuckfests which I presume it will on some level, end up as. Is the protaganist a decent person? Not a huge fan of the arrogant, hyper perv harem protagonist

  10. Funbag is like Berserk. They both belong to a genre that typically has a strong draw other than plot. Things in Berserk's ultraviolent genre include truly awful stuff like Apocalypse Zero. And in the nukige realm we have games where the "plot" is something like "All these monster girls are into the main character because... umm... His semen contains hyper-concentrated magical energy!" Most entries in those genres don't bother, because they know a strong plot and characters aren't the reason people buy these. So they'll still do well even with terrible writing. But Funbag and Berserk do. I have played non-H RPGs with worse characters and worldbuilding than Funbag Fantasy. And yes, I'm serious. Yes, there's gobs and gobs of h-scenes, but the plot actually is written well enough to justify why they're there. To answer your other question (harem versus routes): It's not an either-or. The game basically does both. There are individual character routes, which focus on a single character and are romantic. The harem stuff comes basically as an epilogue to the true route (which is canon and is what the sequels are based off of). And it even makes sense in-story!

    VN update?

Geez... I can never figure out where to post these kinds of topics... So anyway, I know I've posted, like, two times already, but I'm back! And my visual novel is not dead. I came up with this project since Spring last year and it's gone no where... it will happen though, I promise you! Maybe you guys who have made visual novels before can give me some tips or something. See you all next time...! Probably in another year. xD Sh*tty logo for the game that I put together in, like, an hour. Just a draft.

  12. https://myanimelist.net/manga/14787/Ame_Nochi_Hare I heard you like gender-bender. Seishun Rikon is pretty short and sweet. You should get that one off your to-read. Of course, if you can get your hands on the novel, even better. https://myanimelist.net/manga/109243/Haru_to_Bonkura Another short one, though.... romance? Kinda? https://myanimelist.net/manga/67405/Musume_no_Iede https://myanimelist.net/manga/76811/Koiiji These are by the same author as Aoi Hana You should get that and Sasameki Koto off your list, too. Good yuris that showcase two ends of a spectrum, I feel. https://myanimelist.net/manga/103123/Tatoe_Todokanu_Ito_da_toshitemo I like where this one seems to be going. Yuri. https://myanimelist.net/manga/58141/Machida-kun_no_Sekai Not a romance first but some aspects. Heartwarming. https://myanimelist.net/manga/89087/Wotaku_ni_Koi_wa_Muzukashii Game otaku x fujoshi https://myanimelist.net/manga/98187/Saraba_Yoki_Hi "It's true afterall. I can never marry Kei-chan" Edit: https://myanimelist.net/manga/1162/Bitter_Virgin Somewhat surprised I didn't see this one on the list. Edit: https://myanimelist.net/manga/92629/Nobo-san_to_Kanojo Falling in love with a ghost you can't see.

  13. I did start Mizuki's route and The sex scenes in Mizukis route didnt really bother me as she doesnt look underage (once again what bothered me was that it was ridiculously easy to take her sleep with her + take her virginity, High Mizuki > High Protag of an Eroge I met u b4 one time a while ago > Mizuki: Wanna help me in student council? > Help her in student council a few times > Mizuki: Oh, I have nothing to offer u as thanks for your help: Oh I know, here is my body + as a bonus also my virginity. I mean I guess it was amusingly ridiculous but still wth. But yea, it was boring, so I am dropping the game, if I am honest Okarin's description there made it sound kind of interesting lol, but it just seemed like endless sex scenes with no character development or plot really. RE Harrasment: I am not disputing that it is a massive issue, I have seen the predatory behavior in nightclubs (I personally find it pathetic, that said, these guys probably get more action -.-, sadly), been out to a nightclub with just myself and 3 girls and had a group of 3 guys come over to me and tell them to ditch me (they told him to go away, I stopped the girls saying anymore as I didnt fancy getting beaten up lol). As for in England, well, I tend to avoid looking into too much stuff like that, I find it depressing, but I have seen something about harassment in the workplace recently, a few things about human trafficking on the rise, and there has been a lot of stuff about child abuse recently, mostly historic and people that were in positions of power, quite sickening (probably why they were looking to ban loli hentai a while ago in the UK). Train molesting itself isnt really a major issue here as far as I am aware, none of my female friends have mentioned it, I think some women have complained about it. But harassment in general I am sure is as much of an issue here as anywhere. Plus RE this game, sexual harassment is not really even that much of an issue in it (unless it occurs later in Mizukis route or the loli chicks route), I am not sure why everyone focused on it -.-. Maybe I should just not answer to things sometimes (altho I do not like doing that) PS. I guess I should give up on anyone mentioning the Nanjou theory -.-

  14. I don't think so. Dies Irae, Eden*, Tokyo Babel are still listed as untranslated, though they have been translated a while ago. I personally recommend those in this list, because they are really good. In addition, Fata morgana no Yakata and Umineko no Naku Koro ni

  16. Hehe, i'm going to start Fate/Stay Night. I've waited 4 years, 4 years since i started VNs, but finally, i'm playing Fate/Stay Night. That's why i didn't play all the highly-rated VNs, so i could play them whenever i want and be mind blown.
