  5. The 'moe' aspect exists mainly because of market oversaturation. When you're forced to chose between a supposedly 'great' unique project, which might not sell well and a mediocre work, that will definitely meet the sales' expectations, it's obvious you'll go for the latter from a business standpoint; the stakes are simply way too high to risk cutting down the tree you're sitting on. To put it simply, there's no time, nor place for experiments. We'd propably see a lot more studios striving working on better and more interesting games, if not for the current market situation. You must have been living under a rock for at least the past couple of years, unless you're not really following the japanese market. It doesn't take a genius to understand in what kind of dire situation japanese developers are right now; it's a constant struggle to make the ends meet and earn enough to continue doing the things you'd love to do, for a large majority of studios. It's a world, when one mistake in production, one >single< flopped game can literally put you out of business... and by flop I don't mean 'crap'. A lot of great and promising studios, which made quality games are already biting the dust, because they weren't able to find a big enough niche in a niche. TL&DR Niche market with deep connotations to otaku culture. Too many studios, too many games, not enough consumers.

  7. So, Kaguya. The final boss of Touhou 8, Imperishable Night, and also the character my whole profile is based on, and my favorite touhou character, all in all. A long time ago, a bamboo cutter found a baby girl while working. She was unlike all other babies he had ever seen, being really small, and much more fragile. While he was a simple bamboo cutter, and didn't have much to provide, after some thought, he decided to adopt her. And so he took the baby, and he and his wife continued to live their lives normally. However, after adopting the baby, the man was blessed with fortune. Mysteriously finding gold while working, amongst other things. Everything in his life was working out more than perfectly, to ridiculous levels, and they became a very wealthy family over the years. During that time, the girl grew up, with unnatural health and beauty. The girl's beauty was unlike anything ever seen before on earth, and word of Princess Kaguya spread accross the land with shocking speed. And so, tens, if not hundreds of men came to see the rumored princess. All of them proposed to her, and she refused all of them. Even after being refused several times, however, 5 nobles would absolutely not give up on marrying her. Kaguya was conflicted, and decided to set them for a trial. She then set 5 impossible requests to bring her different treasures; She would marry the man who managed to bring her one of the treasures first. The first request was to bring her the stone begging bowl of Buddha. The second was to take a jeweled branch from Mount Hourai. The third was to find the robe of the fire-rat of China. The fourth was to retrieve a colored jewel from a dragon's neck. The final task was to find the legendary Cowry treasure of the swallows. Upon facing these requests, 2 of the nobles gave up, one tried to swindle her with a fake treasure and one decided to propose to her without any treasure. One man, however, decided to seek the treasure to the very end, and tragically died in a storm, before he could even reach his destination. With all of them rejected, word of the princess reched the emperor of Japan, who arranged a meeting with her. Upon seeing her beauty, he too, could not help but propose to her, which she also rejected, wishing only to live with her family in peace. Unlike the nobles, however, the emperor kept contact with her, and they would trade letters as friends for a long time to come. With the passage of time, however, Kaguya began to act weirdly. She would be seen sobbing at night, and acting troubled and depressed. It would later be revealed that she recovered her memories, and that she wasn't human, but rather a being from a species that lived in the moon, exiled to the earth temporarily as a way to pay for her crime of developing and using a drug that brough her immortality, thus leaving her unclean to the eyes of the lunarians. That penitence, however, was about to end, and soon she would have to return to the moon. Not wishing to return, she then decided to hide, and run away. As a last apology, she made and left one drink of the potion of immortality, asking it to be delivered to her closest friend, the emperor of Japan. And that would be the end of it, if not for Mokou. Mokou is the Extra stage boss of IN, and she's quite an interesting one - She was the daughter of the Fujiwara family; The noble who died while doing his impossible request was her father. She viewed Kaguya as a figure that's almost a demon - someone who charmed and tricked her father to his death. She then decided that she would have her vengeance, no matter what. And then she stole the drug of immortality, and took it, determined to make Kaguya pay. The drug was completely beyond her expectations, and she felt tricked yet again, being forced into a curse of never dying, no matter what. Realizing her revenge was pointless, but still determined to have it, it's said that Mokou went on a ramapage for 200 years, burning everything that entered her sight to ashes, be it human or youkai, all the while she felt the pain of the fire in her body, searching Kaguya to make her suffer the same. And that's the start of their story, basically. Though I haven't covered Reisen, Tewi or Eirin, all who are quite important for Kaguya. There's also a lot to expand on Mokou, but I'll leave that for when I explain Imperishable Night. For now, cheers!

  8. So, time to get hyped. The finale will be split into two parts, the first part coming out on saturday and the final chapter will come out one week after! There is 10 remaning fighters, and of course, the three GMs. All rules limiting the GMs from fighting have been lifted, and the chapters will feature the GMs fighting both each other and the members. It will be an epic battle royale type situation. The remaining warriors are:

  9. I have this same problem, although not quite as severe. As far as VNs go, Duel Savior is one of these, where I got halfway through the final route (of seven) and stopped. More recently, there's Kara no Shoujo 2 where I've gotten all the ends but the true end. I keep telling myself I'll go back to it but I just never end up doing so... I never consciously think "I don't want this to end," I always come up with some other reason for stopping. But I've heard a number of people are like this and the common psychological explanation given is a subconscious aversion to endings, with people like me afraid of being "finished" with something and never having a reason to go back. I do finish most VNs I start, however. Normal video games, on the other hand... I can't remember the last one I've beaten. I literally can't. I've started preferring games that don't have an end, maybe because of this. Even my beloved MGS5... Maybe some day... Going back closer to the original topic, I've never stopped a VN because I just liked a heroine too much. I HAVE stopped reading a VN because I hated the other heroines, though. Like Canvas 2.

  12. I can not believe my eyes, but YouTube actually listened to everyone complaining about their unfair system and made a huge change to it: http://youtubecreator.blogspot.com/2016/04/improving-content-id-for-creators.html TL;DR version: Whenever a video gets claimed by someone and is being disputed, ads will still keep running on that video, but the money will not automatically go to the person who made the claim anymore as it used to happen, instead it will be kept aside until the dispute is over and then returned to the person who wins it. They also invested in building teams to prevent abuse of the system in the future and anyone who does is subject to having their tools removed. This is a HUGE game changer for content creators as they used to get fucked over by false claims and lose all their money during the dispute process. This still doesn't prevent DMCA takedown abuse, but it sure as hell is a way to discourage false content ID claims, and that is a big step in the right direction in my opinion. I'm not sure if anyone here follows this sort of copyright drama, but I personally find it interesting to see how the copyright landscape is shifting in recent years. Anyone have any thoughts on this move by YouTube?

  16. like dergo said you can manually fix it with chiitrans, also the parser on vnr is really really bad, actually the parser in chiitrans is almost as good as Translation Aggregator and then vnr which is a mess and I would even call it worthless. Translation Aggregator>chiitrans>http://jisho.org/>anything else available>VNR parser > without editing anything. if you read my guide you will see that one of the main points I criticize from VNR is the parser itself

  17. I don't know how to fix this in VNR, but if you get chiitrans, you can very simply just highlight the word and change the reading, or re-parse manually if it parses the words wrong. guide on how to install and run it:

    The Last GM Standing!

Nebjula: Not very skilled in combat, but makes up for it with sarcasm Well, the characters aren't supposed to reflect your real self, (I mean, you guys are murdering each other with magic and shit ) like I explained in the Q&A, it is a little too hard for me to find a fitting personality for each one of you, that still reflects your real personality. Therefore, all the personalities are randomized. Who gets what is really just picked at random. Enjoy your brute strength buddy!

    The Last GM Standing!

Just read it, and I must say the writing has improved quite a bit. The characters feel a lot more... Distinguishable and unique, with their own quirks and attributes rather than "dude X with swords and Y with Mace" which is what the first part kinda felt like. I'd like to see more of that.

  27. Well, obvious VN for this thread is Yume Miru Kursui, when you're a totall asshole nad choose other routes, or only read that one route where you aren't. But this is rather extreme example. I had a situation like in first post, few times, but never that severe to stop reading/skip through routes. When I read a route and I like it, it's engaging, I had a hard time to get to next route (Majikoi is best example of this), because of those events I just lived are going to be erased. So it's always forcing myself to start another route. And then I usually get acustomed to this new route pretty fast, so no problem. And also - there is no 'cheating' for me, this is only a VN. The protagonist is the one, who gets the girls, not me. It helps that I usually left best girl or second best girl for the last.

  32. I've been simultaneously reading and editing To Heart 2, first Tama-nee's route, now the twins'. Tama-nee, or Kosaka Tamaki (if you haven't been living in the script the past few weeks like I have...) was great. In my admittedly limited experience, I've only once seen a character comparable to her. Maybe you don't see such strong (in so many ways) women in VNs very often because male dominance is too much of a turn-on for most readers, but it's not a bad thing, being dominated every now and then . The only similar character that comes to mind, incidentally, is Kagome from Comyu, who makes for an understandably popular stand-out character. Tama-nee is very much cut from that same cloth. So if you're a Kagome fan, or in general a fan of an overpowered onee-sama (which, I promise, can be every bit as pleasant in a moege as it is in a chuunige), maybe give this one a try; I certainly enjoyed it. You should probably technically wait a bit longer for the final patch release, but since the current beta patch has my edits for this route, don't let me discourage you too much That said, the twins, man. The twins. Let me start by saying that I loathed the twins' route in KonoSora. It tried hard to ruin what was for me a very sweet game. It was everything I dislike in VNs - a pointless male fantasy with an unbelievable (in the worst possible way) plot, set amidst a bunch of (to me) quite believable, relatable stories. In sharp contrast, To Heart 2's twins' route is crushing my heart. I'm about 60% of the way through now (incidentally, having all the script files makes that really easy to estimate), even counting what appears to be an absurdly long H scene at the end which, I won't lie, I'm getting kind of excited about (until I realize I'm editing it, and then I'll probably start crying tears of blood). Compared to the only other twin route I've seen, despite extremely similar characters, the plotting is so much better and the conflicts are so much more believable that I am truly, thoroughly enjoying this. Yes, it's still a tropefest that's just going to culminate in a scene architected to appeal to a teenage male sex fantasy. I don't care. The journey there is pretty damn enjoyable, and at times it's nothing short of heartrending. Well, at the rate I'm going, we should have a patch for the twins' route available in just a few more weeks, so if that latter one piques your interest, hold tight a bit longer...

  33. Even the cat girl heterochomia heroine won't convince me to buy this... because I don't buy crap; especially if it's from Frontwing. The premise is silly and I'm not really a fan of anything with exceedingly ridiculous moe levels, if it's not justified. That said, Frontwing is learning fast, very fast; the same is the pace they start to churn out 'decent' quality vn's; they're not yet as close in terms of speed as Winged Cloud yet, but who knows... Oh you, Japan.

Some good, cheap VNs this sale: Romanesque for $16.24 - A fun, simple raising sim/VN hybrid. It's pretty long and has a LOT of variation for multiple playthroughs. The story is super laid back, generally speaking. Clannad for $25 - It's Clannad, and it's $25. Amnesia Memories for $4.49 - A pretty lengthy, apparently very good otome game. Rooke likes it a lot. It's dirt cheap, too! Fault Milestone One and Two for $3.74 and $7.49 - Pretty decent medieval fantasy adventures for super cheap. The Fruit of Grisaia for $19.99 - Easily one of the best VNs ever officially released, and the best VN on this whole list, for just twenty bucks. I doubt there's many of you who aren't already aware of this, though. eden* for $8 - Fairly decent romance/tragedy. Cho Dengeki Stryker All Ages for $12.24 - Pretty fun shounen action story. The action is pretty ridiculous and over-the-top, and sometimes it gets a little generic, but it's still good, mindless fun. I liked it a fair amount. I promise you that you will not miss the ero content, it's very short, infrequent, bad, and totally shoehorned in. Tokyo Babel for $27.99 - I've been trying to keep to games that have a significant discount but Tokyo Babel is my favorite VN in quite a while and $28 is a steal for it, in my opinion. Higurashi Ch.1 and 2 for $9.09 - Although it's still practically just the opening of this ridiculously long story, Higurashi is a very good VN about the powers of friendship and all that with elements of horror and mystery.

  38. If you look closely, you'll see the character synopses are just a bunch of bullet points masquerading as sentences. It's sufficient, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's impressive. The story synopsis feels similarly mechanical, but not to such an extent (which leads me to suspect something I won't share with anybody right now. I'm just overly suspicious. And no, it's not any of the usual complaints.) The VN community will probably not care though, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to praise it so highly yet. (to say it's better than most localisations.) I know JAST used to put out some decent stuff, and MG's recent standards have been fairly high. We'll probably have to wait and see, I suppose - it's only a website so quality probably won't be thoroughly indicative.

  41. I looked over the website and have to admit I'm impressed. There's not an ounce of Engrish on there. Maybe they won't win any awards, but what I'm seeing there looks better than most official English translations put out by MG, JAST USA, or SP. Add that to no red flags in the opening, story, or characters (aside perhaps from the, even by VN standards, terrifyingly large bust sizes of most of the female characters...), my enjoying the art style, and most importantly Front Wing's reputation, and the end result is that I'm looking forward to throwing money at this.

  44. But while I'm here, I might as well vent just a bit: I think the most disappointing thing about this game is that it's really a step back in maturity. Aselia dealt with the inherent gray morality that comes with war, the helplessness of the soldiers who fight them, and featured a cast of 'expendable' characters who you valued all the more for being just part of your little war-orphaned family. Seinarukana goes back to Tried and True High School, and features the usual cast of childhood friends and magical royalty. The villains are over-the-top omnicidal maniacs, and once again we have that forced style of 'I don't have to tell you anything about my motives, Main Character', which is something people just don't do in real life. "Why are you killing billions of people! What possible reason could there be for that?!" "I have one, but I don't feel like telling you until you're strong enough to stop me." That is infuriating, because it's the cheapest trick in the book for creating pointless misunderstandings. It's not even a trick! It's a cop-out! It would take 2 minutes to resolve this conflict with a simple explanation, but noooo, you're going to gleefully attempt genocide and laugh about it, and try to play the 'greater good' card later and expect it to hold weight, as though you weren't a sociopath in chapters 2-8. That being said, I'm quite enjoying Seinarukana.
