  2. I admit to me one of the better portrayals of an "evil for evil's sake" villain is Kotomine from Fate/Stay Night; it impressed me so much I even wrote a character analysis on him for a contest for a gaming site and it won. Sadly the site (Blistered Thumbs) is no more, but I do have the original piece on my blog here since the judges needed a link to read from. http://gamesforadultsandeveryone.blogspot.com/2012/12/characters-with-character-kirei-kotomine.html

  3. Japetus, The Piercer – He was the last child of Gaia before her death. She knew not her son because he was still in his incubation pod when she set off to seek Nun. Kronus had suspicions when Gaia went missing and decided to not release Jepatus until he knew the ware bouts of mother. The Incubation pod was a barrier protecting the host from contamination. Kronus knew that if he ever needed to get back into the Rift, only one that has never been soiled would be allowed to enter. When Rhea’s secret was revealed to Kronus, he told Japetus, who was still trapped in his pod. Kronus then sent him on his way to the rift to find out what happened to his mother and claim his freedom.

  6. I'm with Clephas here. I like antagonists who are complex beings with the sorts of goals and aspirations that actual people would have. Real "villains" in history that changed the world (like Hitler and Stalin) had complex ideologies and gave a righteous spin to everything they did that commanded the respect and admiration of their followers. And in many ways, the reasons people followed them were even more complex. Too many JRPGs pit you against 1-dimensional lackeys who are stripped of all character except their role as plot devices. I find this the most boring trope of all. If you want to portray corruption, portray corruption--not a Disney trope.

It's been going on the same thing that has been going on in the "gaming" community those last few years, because it reveals issues that are endemic to "geek" culture as a whole, despite all the people who want to believe that "it's just a few assholes on the internet". http://www.newstatesman.com/culture/2015/04/how-hugo-awards-got-very-own-gamergate

  18. I prefer one that isn't actually a villain, but an antagonist. Where you question who actually is "right", if there is a right. I don't like Madness since it makes them seem like idiots, and much prefer the genius type (e.g. Maou in Gsenjou). I recently watched Avengers 2 and it was nice to see a likeable villian (Ultron), he seemed caring for his 2 human minions (at least at the start he was). A villain that is somewhat likeable, and not an evil bastard is refreshing.

  20. Hello~ I've probably been aware of Fuwanovel since 2013, and for the last year or so, have exclusively used the site for walkthroughs, VNTL information, and perhaps reading a few of the blog posts (ever since vntls.org stopped updating once upon a time). I'm a fairly introverted (INTP-A, for those familiar with that type of thing) 25 year old. Being exposed to Visual Novels has been an interesting journey, i must say. In a gaming lul, i decided to pick up Katawa Shoujo on a whim sometime in late summer 2012, and i was blown away on how much such a thing could actually immerse me (I didn't sleep that first night, and managed to read most of the VN in one day). At the time, i had barely any knowledge of what a VN was, as most was heard second hand on various discussion boards, and the little i thought i knew was pretty unflattering (I assumed most VNs were Nukige-like, and had little story/character substance). That opened me up to trying out Fate/Stay Night, Steins;Gate, Ever17, Muv-Luv + Alternative, and a plethora of others that i grew to enjoy. Coincidently enough, between highschool and katawa shoujo, i hadn't really watched much anime, and going through Katawa shoujo actually rekindled my interest in that medium as well, haha. I've probably read enough to where i'd have a hard time making a top 5, but If i had to choose a top 5 (in no particular order), they would be the following: Cross†Channel Ef - A fairy tale of the two. Ever17 -the Out of Infinity- Muv Luv + Alternative (Specifically Alternative) Steins;Gate Some honorable mentions would be Rewrite, Majikoi, Grisaia, Fate/Stay Night, and Sharin no Kuni But yeah, Making topics aren't my strong point, so hopefully this serves as some kind of bare-bones introduction. If there is anything anyone wants to know, feel free to ask and i'll try to answer it to the best of my ability.

okay, i found this solution for the white screen problem from a website from somewhere else but i couldn't recall that, but here's what I did and it works on my windows 10. just select all files and right click > properties > uncheck read only > apply to all > enjoy! i'll leave it here in case there are people still looking for it. it's neither the problem with ntdll or the voice button. and ya, i did set compatibilities to windows xp sp3.

  26. 1) It would be more appropriate to just call this one an antagonist, since they can't really be called a villain, strictly speaking, lol. 2) I'm not terribly fond of this one, because it implies a black and white world view (ala Jedi) that has no practical connections with real existence. 3) Most of the worst stories have a villain of this type, because there is no need to explain his actions. After all, he is evil, so there is no need to make him a real character, lol.

  27. I just want to add, that I personally really like villains that say "We're just like each other" and blurs the lines between the villain and the protagonist. I think those kinds of villains are some of the best! I know this isn't really a whole personality, but I think it still adds something to the villain and the story. I get this is usually in stories where the protagonist himself does some quite questionable actions, but I feel, like I said, it adds something to the story!

  33. That guy should get the facts straight first before trying to educate others. The ammount of bullshit in that video is mindblowing. Oh, come on. There's no need to hide the fact visual novels are niche in Japan as well. They always were and will always be; doesn't matter it's basically more than 70% of games they produce, because they are all tailored towards a very specific audience and no one tries to break out of the mold.

  34. And here it is, Chapter 5! Like I said above, the chapters will now come out on saturdays instead of fridays, to give myself a little more time to write them. (Doing the bulk of the work after coming home from school on a friday was really tiring. This way I can relax a bit more when I'm writing!) We are down to very few people, so only a few weeks left now!

  35. I just want to give a shout to an amazing individual who essentially runs the entire visual novel community with his amazing work. @binaryfail is a hacking master who has saved me and I am sure other people countless times with his amazing personality and awesome help to this community. I just want to say thank you for actually doing what we as a VN community should always be doing: bettering visual novel fans and their love for the genre everywhere. If you want to know more about him, check out this podcast episode I did with him awhile back: https://www.mixcloud.com/OriginalRen/get-to-know-your-community-episode-9-binaryfail Thanks again man for all that you do.

  37. So not trying to sound cynical here but you ask people to give you reasons to learn a language but then: you don't wanna travel so you don't need languages to visit places, if the literature/comics/movies is translated (nowadays all the classics and great pieces for every language are translated at least into english) then you don't need it either, you don't really wanna join communities from people interested in X language or learn their culture either, and if it's a language that's not VASTLY used then you don't care because it's not useful. Man, I don't know, it's like wanting to learn to drive without even thinking of getting inside a car. What's the point here? People is trying to give you reasons and you are just saying that all of them suck. You learn to drive for transportation and/or for love for cars, and you learn a language for communication and/or for love for their culture. If you just wanna learn a language but don't really have any purpose other that just learning then pick one randomly and go for it, it's not like it matters at the end anyways.

  38. I've been neglecting this thread, so here's a summary of the past three days: I'll cover today first, before launching into painting stuff that nobody cares about, because today was quicker: Today I spent a fair bit of time in the British Museum. What they have is not so much my thing, but I did spend about an hour in two rooms with a bunch of clocks, a nice display about the mechanisms for clocks and pocketwatches, and some nice history of European (especially British) clockmaking. Also a little bit on marine chronometers. I really, really want a 17th-century Germanic masterpiece clock now - they had everything, man. Here's a good example. Clock? Hah. Any journeyman can make a clock. A master will make you a quarter-striking astrolabic clock enameled with Zodiac symbols, with an armillary sphere mounted on top. I hardly even know what most of those words mean! On Thursday, when I was supposed to go to Stratford-upon-Avon, jet lag reared its ugly head (despite totally reasonable times going to sleep and waking up the first night and first morning, respectively), and that ruined any possibility of both making it to Hamlet and not sleeping through it (no matter how excited I am about something, if I'm exhausted, seated, and not actively engaging, I will sleep through it). So, instead, I hit up the National Gallery. Holy shit. I spent all day Thursday there, and decided I had to come back Friday to see the rest. Friday was another full day. I still haven't seen the current big Delacroix exhibition (which is a shame), but I saw literally the whole regular display collection. And what a collection it is! They don't have anything beyond about 1905, which misses one of my favorite movements (Blue Rider and Kandinsky), but they had fantastic pieces in all my other favorite eras, and some works awesome enough to give me new favorites. I never thought of myself as a Constable fan before, but of course they have the Hay Wain. It's great, sure, but also hanging nearby was this amazing piece called Stratford Mill, which I absolutely fell in love with. Very beautiful lighting and contrast, in both the ground and the sky. The second day, I came across a Rembrandt called The Blind Tobit and Anna. I have never been so moved by a painting in my life. The light in it is so... soft, and the mood is simultaneously melancholy and content. Absolutely wonderful. Because they had some rooms closed off, I almost missed a room full of Van Gogh and Cezanne. Since I have plebeian taste, I like French Impressionism as much as the next bourgeois, so that would've been a real shame; that whole room was awesome. I never get tired of seeing Van Gogh paintings of sunflowers or cedars in person. In addition to the gorgeous Cezannes and Van Goghs, they also had a very impressive Rousseau; not someone you see a lot of. Probably all the other guys with stuff in that room would've been horrified to hear his work was hanging next to theirs in a top-notch gallery a hundred years later. So I'm standing over on one side of that French Impressionism room, glancing all the way across the room, and I see the most bizarre painting: the forms look exactly like a typical Cezanne landscape, but the colors are downright bizarre. I think "that's gotta be a Cezanne, but it sure is weird..." So I sidle up to it and see it labeled "Braque". Braque? That Braque? No way. I read the rest of the description, and it says something to the effect of "This painting, done in Braque's typical wild coloring, was made in 1907 when he was heavily influenced by Cezanne." Ok, I'll give myself a half-point for that one. Tons of amazing Renaissance paintings, of course. They had a Leonardo, the Madonna of the Rocks; pretty great. Lots of Raphaels, including some rather famous ones. A single half-finished Michelangelo; you can just tell the curators must have really wanted to be able to say they have a Michelangelo, and nobody would sell them a completed one in good shape. Some very nice Spanish Renaissance paintings - I'm a big Velazquez fan, and although I'd never seen it before, his Immaculate Conception just pulled me across the room. Stunning. They had three Caravaggios. Three! Unbelievable. The Supper at Emmaus wasn't one I'd seen before, but it's gorgeous. The expressions, the light, the shadows. What a genius. Definitely my favorite murderer / painter. I never thought of myself as a Canaletto fan before (shit, I don't think I'd even have produced his name if you gave me a day to list every old Italian painter I could think of), but I was sold after seeing a few here; I love his big paintings of Venice filled with boats and people, especially one depicting the annual Regatta on the Grand Canal. Very lively. I think that means I have shit taste, though - apparently his smaller-scale landscapes are "better". I could go on and on and on. The more time I spend on this post, the more great stuff keeps popping into my head; sorry. This is surely already a lot more than anybody cares to read, and I think I covered most of my favorites, so I'll cut it off here.
