    Tiny Dungeon Black and White

First, I’ll say a few words about the Tiny Dungeon series. This series is made up of five games (if you include Endless Dungeon, which is a sequel/canon ending that brings a conclusion to the post-Brave and Slave events). The first three VNs are each focused on one of the three main heroines… Veil Sein, Ururu Kajuta, and Note Ruum. The fourth VN – Brave or Slave – brings an end to the story began in Black and White, and the fifth – Endless Dungeon – is a final conclusion and after-story for the entire group. The first VN, Black and White, contains the common route and the Veil Sein (the demon girl) route. Veil is probably the most obvious deredere heroine in existence… since she doesn’t have a drop of tsun in her body. She loves Hime, lives for him, and without hesitation will erase the existence of anyone who bothers him. The fact that she has the power to do so (the most powerful individual in the demon realm) kind of makes her scary to the various people who don’t like Hime (obviously). Needless to say, I love her, lol. Anyway, this VN, like all the VNs in the Tiny Dungeon series, balances hilarity, serious drama, and emotional moments in a way that you generally won’t see in a VN that is so relatively easy to read. That’s not to say it is a really easy read (it tends to range between 4.5-7)… but it is much easier to read than most VNs with action scenes. The music in all these VNs is pretty good, primarily utilizing piano and techno pieces to enhance and create moods as is appropriate, and they are generally tastefully presented. The voices can be a bit exaggerated, and there is one scene early on when you’ll notice a bit of fuzziness in the background (as a friend explained to me, it is the engine the game runs on, rather than the actual voice-acting or recording itself). However, they are nonetheless generally suited to their characters… and there are a lot of characters. In this VN, there are three main heroines (as stated above) and four total sub-heroines in the series who make up Hime’s hare- I mean, his group of friends. They consist of Amia (Note’s little sister), Opera (Ururu’s psychotic maid), Fon (the dragon/demon hybrid), and Kou (the protagonist’s human roommate). There are also another dozen or so major and minor characters who appear on screen and have a significant effect on the story as a whole, though not all of them appear in the first game. Generally speaking, there is no point in any of the main-series VNs where there is no point to what is going on. The story is always moving forward or creating the basis for moving forward, and the comedy that is used to frost the cake is ever-present, save for in the most tense scenes. Hime, the protagonist, is a natural leader and hard worker who has an incredibly strong will and a reasonable level of intelligence (he’s not a genius, but neither is he average). More importantly, he understands people and has a big, accepting heart. Generally speaking, he is one of the few unvoiced protagonists outside of a chuunige where I truly and absolutely enjoyed every second behind his eyes… One thing you have to keep in mind about this VN is that it is one part in four… and the events in this game are inevitably going to break your heart at times. I know I cried several times in the course of this VN, even though I’ve already played it before. Overall, this VN still gets a strong recommendation from me, both for relatively advanced beginners and veterans alike.

  7. Greetings from Novel Tea Games! We've been working hard on our Visual Novel and we're very close to finishing our demo. I assure you that you won't be disappointed! While we wish to be as transparent as possible and share as much as we can, we also believe in saving some of the content for a surprise when the demo launches so please forgive me if at any point I seem a little vague about certain story details. View our trailer! Now on Steam Greenlight! What's it about!? Runeous is a Fantasy Adventure with 'Steampunk' elements. The story follows a small group of heroes in a world ravished by the wars of its past. Runestones possessing magical qualities are what fuel the industry, their secrets long ago lost. Humans research them to unlock their hidden potential. Overpopulation in cities built for far fewer inhabitants. Homes built atop homes with giant walkways connecting the various levels together. While there is a whole ton of lore that's been written up for the world, we're waiting until the Demo before releasing it as we wish to make it as presentable as possible for you! (I may be willing to give a sneak peek to individuals who can offer genuine feedback and suggestions) What do we have thus far? Well, we're almost done with the demo! There are just a few elements left to add. - In the interests of transparency, we have had a lot of trouble with music. This is an issue that has been addressed with the addition of a new team member! - 90% of artwork is done and that includes the majority of the 'main' assets. All we have left to do is a few more CGs, NPCs and promotional art! As for the writing we're miles ahead! From lore and main plot points to full episodes written! Meet our team! While I would absolutely love to wait until our staff 'Chibi' images are ready, unfortunately we've just not had enough spare time to get them done with the development going on, therefore I'm just going to have to throw some unattractive links at you! Earl Grey - That's me! I'm the project manager, Community manager and Marketing. I wrote the initial story line and lore, however our writer has taken over writing the Episodes! Chamomile - She's our Lead Character Artist! She also works a lot on promotional items and tidbits! Chai - She's our Lead Background Artist. She also collaborates with Chamo on CGs! Jasneymon - Or 'Jas' for short. She's our 'Support' Artist. Working on things like Objects, items or Chibis for the website. Vanilla - She's our Web Designer! You probably can't tell right now, but a lot of work is going on behind the scenes which will improve the site a bunch Kagoshima - He's another amazing artist, however he's working on something 'Top Secret' right now so unfortunately we can't show you any of his content right now Peppermint - Our latest addition. Peppermint is working on Music! Unfortunately I don't have a link to share with you at the moment. So there we have it. That's our small, yet amazingly wonderful team! ^^ If you would like to find out more about our project, please check out our Website You can now also support us on Patreon! We post monthly Blogs! Thanks for reading! Please do let me know what your thoughts are on our projects! Also please consider taking part in our community forum where you can talk, interact and ask questions with the rest of our team! Mail us any time: [email protected] 02 Sept 2015 NPC Update No character is too small or insignificant to us, especially the small insignificant ones We've finished all but one of the 'NPCs' so everyone who speaks within the demo has a face! We've also made some progress on music. While we're not ready to share it with the public just yet, we do have a small 'sample' of the music quality you might expect: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bylf1W-RKQ-mZmxGcDRMUUp4TW8/view 05 Sept 2015 Update: Narrator Portraits Since even the NPCs are featured in our VN, it's only fair that our wonderful Narrators be see too. Today we introduce our Narrator Portraits! 18 October 2015 Update: Free Game! We have decided to release Runeous as a Free Game! Check out out blog to learn more and how you can help to support us!

  8. Earl Grey

    Greetings!

Hi there! So I've been lurking around the forums for a few days but not had much activity. I figured it was about time I introduced myself! ^^ My alias is Earl for the purpose of my VN group (We have 'Tea' names!) We're currently working on a Visual Novel with the name 'Runeous' Click the image to read our forum post in the 'Original VNs' board. I personally am the project manager of the group. I also run Marketing, 'coding' and all kinds of odd jobs. If you ever have questions about developing a VN, need marketing tips/advice or anything else, just give me a poke and I'll try my best to help you out! :3 I'd love to list my favorite VNs but I find it difficult as the assets of each VN can outdo others. For instance the music in VN 1 is better than that of VN 2. Yet VN 2's story and art are better than VN 1... I know right? Confusing! However I can suggest some Indie titles that I've been supporting recently: Invisible Apartment - Wounded by Words - An Octave Higher Well, I hope I didn't bore you and I look forward to meeting you all! :3

  9. After reading the announcement & literally crying my eyes out, i think i´m now somewhat ready to face the harsh reality. They offered us some news regarding the upcoming YU-NO remake, set a site up, listed the voice cast (which isnt bad) &........*buhhuuuu went with the glorious idea of turning Yu-No into an eushully elf......*sob http://gematsu.com/2015/07/yu-no-remake-official-website-launched http://yu-no.jp/ So what are your thoughts & (first) impressions on what awaits us?

  12. This kind of thing is very common in visual novels. It's just how most branching ones are designed. The larger plot points are still the same but the smaller details differ heavily, such as the individual character actions. These don't necessarily have to happen due to the player's choices. VNs don't try to be simulation games, or adventure games where you affect the plot, but basically multiple stories where your choices dictate which story you read. So it doesn't need to be consistent in this regard. Consider the different routes to be completely different timelines. If it makes you feel better, they DO actually construct plot points that tie the routes together and allows you to make sense out of some of the differences, which most VNs don't even bother attempting to do. This happens during the true route.

Long ago when your SAO and high school of the dead were thankfully not made, Lawrence a travelling merchant meets a hot sexy naked wolf girl who doesn’t have a nipples for some reason. *clears throat* And due to her request Lawrence decides to take her to Disneyland I mean her hometown. Be prepared for all of the economical talk where you rewatch a scene five times and you still don’t understand. You may act like you understand like most people or you could be honest and say your confused…just like me. But don’t worry this isn’t an educational anime because there are tons fun activities such as Talking Teasing Beating the shit out of milleon trading guild’s men I don’t know about you but this is way more exciting than the latest episodes of naruto shippuden. Watch Holo and Lawrence go through trials and errors as they trick people to gain money, getting themselves in trouble and building a hot steaming relationship. Dude what are you waiting for she said she wanted to mate with you. Just go do it, it’s a chance of a lifetime. What are you doing, NO NO. Don’t you dare run away I’ve been waiting this for 10 episodes. What you gay? Go back, just, just, AHHHh. You will be bored when you start this anime but you won’t be able to live without it once you set foot. Ahh that was a nice way to end the season. Now onto season 3. Wait WHAT? There’s no season three?!, That’s bullshit, what about the romance, what about the fanfictions. NO I just can’t take it. I WANT MY SEASON THREE RIGHT NOOOOOW. GIVE IT TO MEEE GIVE ITT TOO MEEE. Mom: Calm down it’s just a show. NO YOU don’t understand MAAA. Holo is love Holo is life. I even bought this Holo pillow from amazon. Mom: So that’s where my money went. I’ll teach you what happens when you steal. Ouch ouch “Starring” *sniff* Lawrence vi Britania Your first *sniff* prideful furry erection Ookami to Cliffhanger I’m sorry *sniff* It’s just that I really wanted that happy ending. Guess I’ll read the light novels now.

  21. I'd like you to continue. Your reviews don't spoil and are clear to the point what the vn's are about. Who might enjoy them, what the good about the vn is, and the bad stuff. Always nice to read them. I think you know how to pace yourself. Steer away more from lower quality stuff when you don't feel like it. Write mini reviews. Drop mediocre vn's midway. etc. I honestly don't want you to go whacking yourself on the head by reading stuff you hate. So in the end, don't over do it.

  27. *Ahem* I do hereby announce, Shikomizue's Strange Stories, reopened! The Strange Sister Once upon a time, there was a man named Tiago F. Varela. The day started like any other Saturday, Tiago was on his PC surfing the internet, browsing Fuwanovel and watching romance anime. When all of a sudden, his sister of all people walked in and said. “Onii-chan, do you want to do something today?” “What did you have in mind?” he asked. “Maybe we could go out for some ice cream?” “Sounds lovely” And so they went out to get ice cream, his sister asked for chocolate while Tiago himself wanted strawberry, Tiago payed for the delectable treats like a gentleman. “Can we go somewhere else Onii-chan?” “Sure why not, how about we go to the book sto-” But he couldn't finish because he slipped on a banana peel, and considering they were walking down a hill... he slid into a manhole. “Onii-chan?! Are you okay?!” “Peachy” Now smelling like sewage, Tiago noticed there wasn't a ladder to get out. Looking closely, it seems the rungs had been pulled out for some reason. “It seems there isn't a ladder here. I'll meet you at the next manhole okay?” “Alright, I'll meet you there. Be careful Onii-chan.” As Tiago walked down the pathway, he noticed another manhole entrance, he climbed up and pushed but it wouldn't budge, not even a little bit. He then noticed what looked like cement, and it looked fairly recent. Disappointed, he continued walking, searching for another exit. Unfortunately, all of them were sealed. Thinking back, everything up to this point seemed... planned. But who would want to do this? He had done no wrong, committed no crime. Pushing his glasses back up to the bridge of his nose, he started thinking like his favorite Ace Attorney character: Edgeworth. “There are three things so far that indicate this was intentional.” 1. The obvious cement on all of the manholes. 2. There was one open manhole even though all the others are sealed. 3. The banana peel by itself you could pass as coincidence, but considering the other two things, that's not likely. Anyone could have figured this out, he just wanted to make himself feel smart. “It's clear that someone wants me gone but who? Who would have a motive? I haven't done anything to my family to deserve this. Maybe someone on Fuwanovel who took me too seriously?” Knowing that standing around thinking all day wouldn't get him out of the sewers, he continued on his journey for an exit. He found another manhole and decided it was worth a shot. He climbed up to it, pushed, and luckily, it seemed the culprit forgot to seal this one. As soon as he made it out, he noticed a clown with a flower on his head walking up to him. “Hey there! You look like prime clown material!” he said. “I what?” “I said you look like clown material! Come with me!” and the clown dragged Tiago off to a big tent. “Hey guys! I found another performer for us!” As the clown said this, many looked in his direction. Tiago took a good look at all of them. A girl with golden hair and... sparkles? There were a lot of animals around her, so he thought she must be an animal tamer. A very thin man with a puppet... that was hitting him. A ventriloquist perhaps? There also seemed to be a magician with pink hair. Tiago thought he recognized this man from somewhere. What was his name...? Bob? John? Billy? No, no magician would have a name like those, right? Said magician responded to the clown. “Fabulous! We could always use some more help around here.” Tiago protested to this however. “Your friend here is mistaken, I'm no performer, much less a clown.” “Oh, well that's too bad. I was hoping we could get some help with our performance. Anyway, sorry to bother you.” “It's fine, I'll be on my way now.” and so he left the tent. After getting out of the den of weirdos, Tiago went to many places looking for his sister. I'm not going to mention any of them because I've run out of ideas at this point. But you can be sure each place had some hilarious happenings. After a long day of looking around he started going back home, it's the only place she could be. When he walked in, he heard a voice, it was his sister's voice! Tiago opened the door where it came from and found... Flutterz, who said: Wanna have a tea party? The End I want some feedback from you guys. Did I do better than my previous stories? Or do I still need work? If I do, please tell me in what area so I can improve. Oh, and for the next story, give me a prompt to help me out.

  30. personally i´d like you to continue, cause when i read them ever so often then i get the feels you´re quite objective when reviewing, which isnt sth you see so often done by others, therefore go for it, as it has inspired me reading stuff, i wouldnt have done otherwise.

  31. I hope you continue, tbh. I don't know Japanese so I've always kept track of your reviews as a rough gauge to wether or not I would be interested in a title being localized. Though I never take anyone's opinion as fact until I've had a chance to read something for myself, I find your praises and complaints are often in sync with what I look for - and at the very least that nudges my interest to a extent. But, what really matters if you want to keep doing it, all in all.

  35. Well, the project is progressing, although most likely my translations are the sort of novice hackwork you'd expect from a guy who passed JLPT3 some years ago, but there you go. Also managed to convert the first of what I believe judging from the art assets to be the first of several mini games. I believe there's even a strategic card game somewhere in here, and we'll see how that works when I get that far. Here's a screenshot of the mini-game. Essentially you roll 3d6, your opponent declares whether his roll will be higher than yours. If he's right he wins, if he's wrong you win. I noticed that the code for this was rather convoluted the way it might have been written in an old BASIC dialect (sans the line numbers), but it seems to be a language of roughly the same level of power. I imagine many other old game engines are like that.

  37. I honestly don't see the problem. Probably the only thing that will take a hit will be the h-scenes - and while I haven't read the VN yet, it doesn't sound like something that would fall apart when you omit the sex (they aren't necessarily going to remove it from there). I also usually prefer the remake art over the old one (Higurashi, Umineko, Tsukihime), and this is no exception, so I am looking forward to this.

  43. I'm currently playing Black Wolves Saga, an otomege by Rejet. I'm going to repeat a statement I've made many times in the past about otomege in general... their tropes are like a cancer on the genre in general. DIDS (Damsel in Distress Syndrome), tsundere heroes, psychotic/obsessive/possessive heroes, and dominating heroes rot these VNs from the inside in the same way the osananajimi heroines, airhead heroines, and self-insert protagonists of male-oriented VNs do to those. This VN is no exception. The protagonist is your typical optimistic, slightly airheaded doormat that makes up ninety percent of all otomege protagonists. That this VN is an utsuge only makes this stand out more... she attracts a huge host of yandere, yangire, and just generally insane and/or broken heroes who are - to one degree or another - obsessed with her. To be honest, I was almost impressed that they could manage to put so many crazy people in as romantic interests in a single VN. I finished the two Cait Sith main heroes' paths last night... and my thought was 'This is what is listed as a GOOD ending? Seriously? Just how much of a moronic doormat can she be?' To be blunt, it resembled some of the bad endings I've seen in chuunige where the protagonist basically spends the rest of his life as a sex-slave for a psychotic female who isn't quite a heroine before she decides to kill him on a whim. There is absolutely nothing likable about either of them, no redeeming value to them as people... and you are required to finish their paths to access some of the more interesting heroes. To be honest, this entire VN would be a lot more interesting if they had put it in complete 3rd person and made you just a spectator to what was going on rather than forcing you to self-insert into an idiotic ditz who occasionally shows signs of intelligence, only to make you give up on her five minutes later when she thinks, says, or does something so completely idiotic that it cancels out those brief moments of actual intellect. I'm being really harsh... but where this story really stands out is in the depth of the setting and the degree to which the writer captures the insanities of human nature when driven to extremes by a hellish life or the events of the world around them. The characters are generally distasteful scum or people who make you want to kick them in the head for stupid naivete, but in exchange, you get a story of genocide, intrigue, torture, and murder that lines itself up with a number of other dark fantasy out there... and doesn't lose out completely, despite the cast of characters. Another place where this VN stands out is in its music and art... the art is a unique style, with the use of colors and detail you generally don't see even in your average otomege. The music is dominated primarily by gloomy and sorrowful tunes... but those tunes are pretty high quality, so it is a plus, despite most of the tracks being depressing. While I plan to play one of the wolf paths, I have no interest in playing all the paths of this VN, so think of this as my general impression for the time being. Being the protagonist of this VN is just too frustrating given the setting for me to be able to stand it much longer.

  45. I'm not saying it's not something people are worrying about, I'm saying it's not worth worrying about. Being afraid to expand while worrying about the "SJW" specter is pure idiocy. Even if people start raising a big fuss over your VN (they probably won't), that's a good thing. See: Hatred, and how much it profited off the backlash.

  46. It pretty much all comes down to the price. If Grisaia was $10 it would probably be outselling Gaokao. Gaokao offers an actual non-ecchi-filled dating sim/VN hybrid of substantial length at a super cheap price, so in a way it was bound to do well. But the translation is utter garbage, possibly machine translated. Looking at Gaokao's steamspy numbers and considering where Grisaia was when SP requested for their games to not be tracked, I'm pretty sure Grisaia is at least pulling in more money. And they'll probably make a ton more once it goes on its first serious (50%+) discount. The real moral of the Gaokao thing is that your average customer doesn't actually give a shit about translation quality. As long as the text is legible and the girls are cute, they'll buy anything. You know, I actually sort of have a soft spot in my heart for Gaokao, it at least provides more and better content than the Sakura games, even if the English writing is beyond horrible. And the devs seem to want to retranslate it with the money they're earning, so there's that. At first I was kind of incredulous that it was doing so well, but I don't mind it so much anymore.
