  1. Believe it or not, the forums are not the only part of Fuwanovel. This may surprise some of you, but there are plenty of us that do work for Fuwanovel, often without any help from the "Fuwa Staff". I feel that these people are just as much staff for the site as the Forum mods, and I would like to take a moment to recognize them. For starters, Zakamutt has almost single handily been carrying the Fuwa Gazette for a while now. He puts in a lot of effort to his Status posts and recruitment posts, aznd has been looking for a team fruitlessly for a while now. Not only does he work as the head of the blog, he also does a ton of the lifting on the official Fuwanovel twitter account, typically posting news at the same moment I do. He also just so happens to be the newest member of the Facebook team and has only screwed up one post to date. Next up is another blog staff member. JuicyYuuji just started today, but nothing caught fire and no deaths were reported. Indications are he will do just fine. Down is considered one of the Fuwa Staff thanks to his moderation of the forums. He also does some off-forum work in the form of FuwaReviews and assisting in the Fuwanovel twitter account. I made him read School Days HQ, and he absolutely hated it. Despite that, he is moving on to the next review, like a trooper. A true survivor if I've ever seen one. Ryechu reviews nukige and forced me to read ToS agreements to see if we could even post the reviews. Turns out we can. Fuck you censorship. He doesn't just review nukige for FuwaReviews though. He also took on Cho Dengeki Stryker and Magical Witch Diary or something. He also likes Raichu. No man insults Nohman, the third and final reviewer for the FuwaReviews team. He turns out some really good stuff and obeys my every command. You may also know him as Bill Murray, but I know his true name for those curious. Nayleen is next up here. Fuck if I know what he does, but sometimes he breaks things, other times he fixes them. Just depends how much he's been drinking. He does some of the coding for Fuwanovel, so if anything seems broken, you know who to blame. All hail the king of forum spam, Nosebleed. When he isn't posting 100 times a day on the forums, he makes Facebook posts for the page. Usually, he has to go in and answers questions that I reply super sarcastically to. We still await the day when Nico Nico Nii shows itself on the FB page. It will happen. Ryouuuuu/Kyouuuuu might not be able to decide on what his name is, but thats alright. We forgive him anyway. Our resident Facebook Key specialist, if there is Key news about, he is on the case. 99% of my skype messages from him are usually along the lines of "Angel Beats hyyyppeeee!!!!!" Beato is listed as a forum mod, but those pretty game download pages, thats her work. She is the one to usually get those pages up and running. We don't know much of her true nature, but as a Swede, I can only assume she controls Tay like a puppet. dale is the reason you can fap to a high amount of seeds when downloading games. As the owner of the seedbox we use, nothing gets seeded without his permission. A warning to all lolicons. For your podcast needs, look no farther than OriginalRen. Even if the episode count is out of order, rest assured you'll find plenty of interesting things in the episodes. Inner workings of the Fuwa staff, interviews with translators, and discussions with regular members all appear at one point or another. There you have it. Most of, if not all of the Fuwanovel Staff. These guys work off the forums on the real parts of Fuwanovel. Please give these people some thanks and support for what they do off the forums as I feel they are often overlooked on Fuwanovel. If I forgot anyone else, please let me know. As much as I try to keep up with the staff, sometimes someone will slip through the cracks, especially with all the new changes.

  2. Recently I finally got around to reading Narcissu, after I finished it I was stunned at how good it was. I wanted to create a thread about it, but I couldn't organize my thoughts about why I thought it was a masterpiece. It wasn't until I read Narcissu Side 2nd, and discovered that I preferred the original that I finally understood why. Before I start I want to say that I think that Narcissu Side 2nd is a good visual novel, overall I enjoyed it. But whereas Side 2nd is good, Narcissu is great. By the way this is an analysis, so the rest of this thread is filled with spoilers.

  3. Sure, why not? Merry Christmas, everyone. Hope you're all enjoying your holidays. Forgive my horrible timing, I was busy wasting my time in nord ruins of Skyrim these days. I've already wrote how did I get to know about visual novels in my small introduction on my profile page, but I don't mind saying it again here - I discovered G-Senjou no Maou on a hentai-streaming site. I've been using torrents for downloading for quite some time before that, so I searched for torrent trackers that might be seeding it and accidentally stumbled upon Fuwanovel. After finishing Haru's route I downloaded Grisaia no Kajitsu and If My Heart Had Wings afterwards. At that time I've become interested in the forum of Fuwa, and I registered my first account (it says "retired" now). My first impression was a little odd, to say the least. I've been an active member on an anime forum before coming here, but I haven't seen as many people having waifus and preferring 2D world to 3D as here. I enjoy both of them myself, but I still prefer 3D to 2D. I grew accustomed pretty quickly, made a couple of friends. "Kinda" tried to contribute to this awesome community of yours, but that good will didn't last for long. Partly because of my own laziness and partly because of the lack of any attractive things to contribute to. Now, "Pretty Much Entire Life History" part is coming up. Are you really interested? I'm 17 years old. Born in Russia, living in Italy with my mother and her partner. No brothers or sisters. My father can as well be dead. How the heck did I end up here? A few months after I was born my father took my mother and me to our parents to Ukraine. Upon arriving there he told us that he thinks he's not ready to have a family yet. Living us to our parents, he returned back to Moscow. My mother, after recovering after the stress, received an offer to go working in Italy. She accepted it, and I was left with my grandparents. A few years after she got there, she found a man who she fell in love with. They started living together and at that time she started to prepare the documents for me to transfer here. She spent more than 6 years doing it, and at the time everything was ready I was 12 years old. Upon arriving here the family of her husband started to create all sorts of troubles to me and my mother. We've never been able to discover the true reason behind it, but the most plausible possibility is that once her husband discovered that his children he had with his previous wife were being jealous of my mother and me he decided to get rid of us. Under the pretence of finding a job as a manager of a restaurant to my mother, he moved us with our belongings to a new place, where we spent 2 years until we had to close because we weren't able to pay rent nor for the restaurant, nor for the place we were living in anymore. At that time my mother got in touch with a man we're currently living with. He invited us to stay with him, and so we're living together for a third year already. Happy end? Not really. The man has tons of his own problems to solve, so he can't fully dedicate his attention to us. Can't say he's any eager about it either. To heat the house we have to use electric heaters because there's no heating in the place we're living. We can't keep constantly turned on either because the electric bill grows to the sky. We do have a fireplace, which fills the apartment with smoke whenever you try to start a fire in it. Apparently the chimney is too short for the smoke to escape efficiently. Perhaps I should add that there are no jobs to be found here. But we're living near the sea, so I suppose it's all worth it. Too bad it adds enormous amount of humidity to the apartment, though. Unlike Tiago, I'm a natural optimist. Everything has a positive side to it, you just have to see it. I like pondering about philosophical matters (that's a little hobby of mine). Aside from that - I love music, especially listening to it. Currently learning Japanese, but who cares. Pretty Much Entire Life History - check. Ah. Holiday message, right. Happy holidays! I hope you'll spend them having as much fun as you want, doing what you want when you want where you want. Thanks again for such an awesome community, everyone. Please continue being awesome. P.S. Heizei - I'm expecting a similar thread from you now.

    Thoughts on VNs

One thing that I've consistently noticed about around ninety percent of the VNs I've played is that they tend to be personal stories, even when they are large in scale or not overly focused on the characters. A protagonist, a heroine, a villain develops on a personal level, the story flowing through their point of view, effecting their way of seeing the world, altering how the world effects them. VNs where the events are not intensely personal to the characters or where there is no specific protagonist are rare, and this at least partly because of the fact that VN narration is almost never carried out by a third-party uninvolved or only peripherally involved with events. This is contrast to the tendency in modern novels for a story to be filtered through dozens of different, almost 'disposable' points of view (ie: Game of Thrones, Malazan book of the Fallen) that contrasts with that preference. This is a function of the way the medium works, at least from what I can see. The habits and conventions of VNs include the protagonist not possessing a tachie and the protagonist being the narrator, at least part of the time. Multiple points of view share a similar tendency, with each point of view having an individual, similarly limited point of view in the narration. In my mind, this actually shows that VNs have a potential to evolve far beyond their current uses. It gives me hope that VNs will one day take their place as a true unique medium for storytelling, rather than a completely niche branch of video-gaming with an overwhelming tendency to possess gratuitous sexual content. At the same time, I'll probably be one of those resisting change until I get swept away by a particularly awesome epic story, lol. I want to see VNs evolve, but I am particularly unsuited to helping them do so, due to my long experience with the medium. In other words, I'm too deep into the medium to see it properly from a near-outsider's perspective, except hypothetically. This is more of a message to those would write OELVNs than anything else. I want to encourage yall to break the boundaries created by the Japanese example, while keeping the elements that made the medium so attractive for us. There are things that the Japanese just don't do as well as Westerners, and I'd like to see those concepts, themes, and ideas creeping into this medium to make it of an even greater scale here than it is in Japan someday. Sincerely, Clephas

  5. I understand. Out of all possible people, you probably weren't expecting me to make one of these. First of all, don't delude yourself. I'm not writing this next to a fireplace with snow coming down outside with hot chocolate on my secretary and the dog sleeping at my feet. I'm in my cold room with the dog barking at the door, probably heard some kind of noise outside, with no drinks or sustainment of any kind and rain is pouring down outside. At any rate, here you go, my very own Christmas Message to ya'll. Merry Christmas. -Mr. Poltroon That ended up somewhat short, didn't it? Let's make up some more stuff on the spot. Like... like... oh yeah. My experience on Fuwanovel and stuff! I found out about Fuwanovel, and Visual Novels, right around the start of this year. What introduced me to visual novels was a very enjoyable game for me, by the name of "To the Moon", I highly recommend you play it, never know when my hitmen might knock on your door. Right around the same time, and purely by coincidence, I also found out about the Phoenix Wright series, another excellent group of games I suggest you play, for your own good health and whatnot. To the Moon showed me good storytelling that could come from this media, while Phoenix Wright showed me the comedy that would later become the reason why I play Visual Novels (I know, terrible reason, though perfect match for a terrible person). While searching for more, because people always want moar, moar, moar, I found out about this website. The first Visual Novel (at least in a truer sense) I played was Ever17. I was very scared, since I am a victim of the altogether too common irrational fear of the unknown, you see? Anime didn't have all that much of a good image in my mind at the time. I later found out my image was spot on, at least relating to nukige. Having thoroughly enjoyed the first game, I proceeded to play the sequel and prequel, and this is where I first used Fuwanovel. I used a walkthrough for Never7, and the first I found was the Fuwanovel one. Moving on, Fuwanovel became my place for walkthroughs. No, I had no idea I could download them here. Wonderful. The first VN I downloaded from Fuwanovel was Little Busters, and for a while, the only one. I fear the unbeknownst to me, I'll remind you once again. Keeping with that logic, I stuck with All Ages titles for a good 5 or 6 titles, it took me nearly a year to get through these. Of course, All Ages eventually ran out (at least those I was interested in), forcing me to try my first "eroge" so to speak, G-Senjou no Maou. Quite a challenge, considering it was my first contact (of my own volition) with pornography of any kind . You may choose to believe this or not, but I'm simply not very interested in matters of copulation. What a terrible topic, moving on. I eventually reached Grisaia no Kajitsu in my quest for mighty loot. I adored it. Like, really, to the point where it made me make my first post on the forums. I always make an account even for one time searches. Simply a pet peeve of mine, disregard it. You can check my first topic here, where you'll notice I was trying to keep any and all warped personalities under wraps. https://forums.fuwanovel.net/index.php?/topic/4111-greetings-equally-addicted-human-beings/ But that's enough about Fuwanovel, it's not like any of you care about that old thing anyways, right? Let's address myself now, I'm sure you're all itching to learn about my own life, asking questions like, "How much further can he boost his ego?" I'll show you: I'm a 28 year old man with a job at a local sports club (management side, don't ask me to do exercise, pls) which is rather well connected to my family. Great 'friends' with the chief, actually. Two sisters. Two parents. Exempting the older sister (that hater ), we all live together. My family is a fairly happy one, but I've come to think, just how different is it from other, perhaps more normal, families? It's pretty much a free-for-all around here. If an argument starts, younger sister uses up all opportunities to take a jab at the parents, the parents argue with each other and I attack everyone. If we all sit together to eat, making fun of everyone and everything is the norm, usually at someone's expense. And the main thing? The heavy, heavy use of sarcasm. Don't think I'm a wrinkled old grumpy man, this is how I was born and raised, and to be honest, it's plenty fun. I don't know what kind of image that gave you, probably a despicable one, but we're all happy people. I'm a natural pessimist, which when coupled with my usual personality does not produce good results, but what can one do? This makes me what I consider to be a horrible person. Makes fun of everyone, but doesn't get involved himself. Takes a jab at everything, even what he agrees with. Avoids any kind of responsibility, using "I think" and "Perhaps" to escape certainties. A craven to no end. This is who I am, and I'm well aware of it. My family is well-known as a funny one, myself included. That one guy who's fun at parties, but you might not be interested in getting too attached, might you come to understand what's beneath the funny surface. But this is who I am, and I know it well. Self-improvement seems fake and hollow to me. Being yourself seems the best way of life, so that's how I do it. Now... Let's tie this all up with Fuwanovel and finish up. I'm sure at this point only a couple of you have read this far, but worry not, I wasn't expecting anyone to really read this anyway. Fuwanovel is the only forum where I've stayed this long (not even a year yet, huh?). The reason for this is how I haven't been reprimanded much about my manners. I strongly feel that if I can't be myself, I've no place here. And, to be honest, I'm totally fine with not having a place anywhere, I know I'm not a person who's easy to get along (especially on a bad day, lovely). Strangely, though, Fuwanovel hasn't shunned me away like I thought it would, so it's certainly a happy surprise. In the end, thank you everyone, for making me happy (so self-centered ) and letting me feel at ease here. There's a courtesy kind of thanks, and then there's this kind of thanks. They're different, and especially when coming from me, one of them is pretty rare. I wish you all a Merry Christmas, and a fantastic New Year, because I do care about the seasons, for believe it or not, I too am human. :xmas: EDIT: Because I really have nothing better to do (lies, it's all lies), I have made this for your laughing at me pleasure: https://soundcloud.com/tiago-varela-3/sets/christmas-message/s-4tn1T

    Unhack

Hello everyone . This morning, I woke up and received an e-mail from Valve telling me Unhack has been accepted onto Steam. I started this project near the time when the Fuwanovel forums first existed, and you have all been really supportive from day one, so I really wanted to come in here and say thank you !

Thank you Tiagofvarela, Rooke, nohman and B0X0R ! There are a lot of things I need to fill out before it is Steam ready, so in terms of release, I would say late January at the earliest. Sirius, are you looking at the online version? That is actually a really old build . With all the Firefox and Chrome updates, it probably made the code incompatible. Trust me I have lost lots of hair over this (;u;)/~ You can download the demo (executable version) by visiting the play section of the website: http://unhack.invertmouse.com/ Thank you!

    Thoughts on VNs

It was just one example. To be blunt, the current format is pretty much set in stone in Japan, with only rare exceptions popping up (sometimes only one every few years). It didn't spring out of nowhere, no... but the evolution of VNs in Japan has hit a dead-end, more or less. Good ones in exactly the same format and style as four years ago are the most common, with only occasional works of genius breaking the mold and making small additions to the medium's conventions. Dies Irae is a classic example of a work that completely blew away the medium's conventions (while ironically using many conventions of classic epic storytelling) then found its concepts assimilated and reused piecemeal in numerous other works. The same goes for the series Ever17 came from. It burst upon the scene over a decade ago, introduced a unique set of ideas... that were then assimilated. That's how the genre 'evolves'. Unfortunately, there haven't been any revolutionary 'evolutions' of the genre in several years, though there have been kamige that utilized what was already there extremely well. The problem is that this kind of slow 'evolution' is pretty much the standard for all Japanese entertainment. Once a medium matures, it stultifies. The same thing happens here, as well... but not to the same extent. What bothers me is that people who write OELVNs seem to have either an excessive bent to the Japanese side without adding their own unique 'colors' to it, or, even worse, they decide to go for absurdity or extremity of expression and alienate people like me who want a good story to experience. That would be fine if the medium was a 'mature' one here, because that would simply be a symptom of 'breaking free', a type of event that is common to all art and entertainment mediums after a time of stagnation and stultification in the West. However, we haven't even had time to reach that point, lol. The East has a lot more trouble breaking out of cycles of stagnation than we do, so I was more or less expressing a hope that the West would develop a strong tradition of its own that would give some return influence to the Japanese in turn. To be blunt, left to themselves, the Japanese media companies have a bad habit of becoming reliant on outright mimicry over time that comes close to plagiarism by our standards. At the same time, the West has a bad habit of thinking that originality is an absolute virtue in and of itself, while failing - whether consciously or unconsciously - to recognize where that 'originality' was born. Moreover, the art of 'telling a story' is dying in visual media here, as the focus of gaming turns more and more to a multiplayer experience and there is nothing to replace that niche gaming is leaving behind gradually over time. How many TV shows or game series over here say they 'tell a story' when all they are really doing is making an excuse for more sequels? It would be one thing if it were just a slight majority, but... VNs are a medium that is still in its formative stages here. Right now, most of the people writing OELVNs are heavily Japanese-influenced or 'artists' who are testing the boundaries of their own talents (wherever those happen to be). People who are getting down to business and trying to tell a story are just outright rare here... and that is a waste. As I've stated before, I believe that VNs hold a potential as a storytelling medium that surpasses even what the Japanese have used it for... and I honestly want to see us be the one that surpasses the boundaries they have set out. My challenge to OELVN writers is this: blow me away, make me take as much of an interest in OELVNs as I do in the Japanese industry. Hell, make me add OELVNs to my VN of the Month thread. I would like nothing better than to be blown away by a western-written, western-influenced VN story. Edit: @Zalor: I read a lot of Western literature... and that is the problem when I try to read OELVNs. There are plenty of Japanese VNs whose literary level is equivalent to Japanese novels, but most OELVNs I've tried to read have sounded like rehashing of moege (Japanese-influenced), 'artist' driven disasters, or attempts to tell a story that reminded me of the mass-produced serial novels I read in my early days as a bibliophile (Hardy Boys-level literary quality... which is fine for a juvenile but causes yawns for someone used to epics like Honor Harrington, the Malazan Book of the Fallen, etc). Edit2: A lot of it is that the most of the really talented writers attracted to VNs so far are more interested in reading the Japanese ones and writing regular novels, as opposed to actually putting together a novel project of their own. This is in large part because it is far easier to write a novel alone than to gather a team to make a VN. Edit3: I should make it clear that anything I write, VN-wise, will inevitably be Japanese-influenced and most likely chuuni as well (though I like my characters a bit more mature than people in their teens, lol). For that reason I'm not suited to being an 'OELVN-pioneer'.

  13. An exciting annoucement I'd like to annouce that me and another person are starting a translation project for the Love Live! School Idol Diary manga! This is the manga adaptation of School Idol Diary (Light Novels) that began serialization in April this year in Dengeki G's Comic, it is separate from the main story School Idol Project so expect new content to come out of it. I hope this excites some people, I can't give you any ETAs but we'll work on it at our pace. That is all, look forward to it~

  16. Indeed, the subtle nature of death in this VN definitely made the reading experience that much more harrowing and believable. The gulf between the protagonist and Setsumi is so vast that there was no way for them to ever really become as close as I would have wanted. Setsumi's suffering was deep rooted and the illness eating away at her made more of an impact when it was pushed backstage. I contemplated what the extent of her pain was, but she wasn't one to really speak about her problems so it was left to the imagination. The protagonist probably still feared the unknown at this point, which made the entire journey more plausible because he would have wanted to know what it meant to depart from this world. He was walking a fine line as well, but he was not yet trudging along in a dark swamp like Setsumi was. His role as the observer as the observer is quite the vantage point. Like you said in your analysis, it is a story about a personal journey, a choice which would ultimately claim the life of only one person. As for your last two sentences, Narcissu shows the finality of a situation where a person has entertained all possible choices and reached a satisfying conclusion. The toil of sifting through emotions and questioning the reason behind one's existence is over. All that is left is throw down the gauntlet and follow the path that Setsumi created for herself. In Side 2nd we get to see the internal conflict come to the surface. She interacts with a character who is struggling with her own faith and as a result we get to see Setsumi latch on to hope. She had not yet given up at this point and I believe this state of mind is what ultimately made all the difference so that she could take the plunge. It was quite the emotional journey and one that left many questions and concerns about euthanasia for the future. One never really knows how one's end will come but I appreciated the way these VNs tackled such a controversial and important subject matter.

  17. Fufufu. Time to unleash my ultimate power. I would have posted this earlier, but I wanted to wait until the last day of the contest so that people wouldn't be disinclined to enter because of how hopeless their chances of winning would be. I present to you... THE CHRISTMAS BANANA. Why is it Christmasy? First off, one might notice that it has "Christmas" written on it. Furthermore, the keen of mind might also realize that this word is written in red, a color associated with this particular season. Perhaps it is also worth mentioning that I got a bunch of bananas for Christmas but forgot how quickly they expire, so I needed to waste use all of them quickly, and making the most of what one has is well within the holiday spirit. Mind the scribbles I used to get the red pen working. -_-

  22. Aarinfantasy: BL stuff. Has much bigger scope than just VNs, but it does host a decent amount of translation projects, some of which don't list their progress in any more public place. You need an account to see most of the interesting bits. http://aarinfantasy.com/forum/ TLWiki: "feud" with us (not really an active thing now, lol) nonwithstanding, a lot of fan translation projects are listed on it. Started and led by Moogy. Their IRC channel #tlwiki on Rizon is sometimes frequented by people active on the scene like koestl etc, not the nicest culture though. http://tlwiki.org/

  25. If you get all three required spirits for a spell and the character knows it, they WILL cast it. This will happen whether it's by coincidence (you don't touch the dice) or you force it into happening through manual dice bumping. Clicking on the spell in the spell list is just the cheaty way of doing it, which is why they take away all of your spirits when you do that. This is basically what I've been talking about. Bump the dice until the desired spirits are laying face up which is easy to do once you know the trick to cast the spells you want every time without losing any spirits. Romanesque quickly transforms from a weird and frustrating RNG-based dice rolling game into an actual skill game that takes hand-eye coordination and that kind of thing once it all starts to click in your mind. The RNG starts to matter a whole lot less once you get good at bumping the dice and figure out the good skill combos. The most random thing about it becomes the random placement of the objects, but you can still manipulate your luck by bumping the dice into ideal positions (e.g. shove one character's dice into a corner and spread out the other one's). My end game and NG+ strategy right now is (don't read if you want to figure some stuff out on your own): Oh and one other thing to note since I've seen some people ask about this elsewhere: Only the first three dice count for spell casting when doing manual bumps. Extra dice is only ever used for spirit generation and nothing else. The darker shade of dice is the original that needs to be manipulated to cast spells.

    Thoughts on VNs

Some very good thoughts on this whole topic, gotta say. I hope as well that VNs, through becoming popular in the West can be exploited to their full narrative potential. I once saw a video describing why Western comedy films are failing in the past decade. It explained how many comedies released today rely almost completely on narrative. Relying only on narrative is poor, unimaginative film making, using only the audio aspect of film while the director still has the full spectrum of video he is not using. What I get from what you're reading is that VNs are beginning to suffer in the same way. The main hurdle is the fact that VNs are marketed as video games. People over here see VNs as jokes of video games. They are kinda right, as they are indeed not video games and are being marketed wrong. If they were to be marketed as a new storytelling medium, like e-books for example, VNs would be much more likely to catch a wave of popularity than they are now. To get creative here, (this would be really nice) selling a Kindle equivalent would make this medium much more appealing to the western public.

  45. First, knowing kanji isn't really necessary to play VNs with the translation aggregator/ITH combo (using jparser only) or the VNR's furigana function. These are solely for getting used to the language, separately from the kanji. To be frank, learning kanji takes a lot longer than learning how to read Japanese this way, and unless you want to wait two or three years before you start, I don't suggest using kanji-knowledge as a marker for when to start playing VNs in Japanese. These levels assume a basic background in Japanese grammar, syntax, and common vocab (particles, tenses, sentence structure, negative form, te-form, ta-form, etc. as well as words in common use in everyday conversation). Understand, if you can't understand a raw anime episode (at least to a reasonable degree) you shouldn't even make the attempt. While the written language has the advantage of a lack of the ambiguity lent to language by the intervention of a voice, it also has the disadvantage of being more complex than what is normally spoken in most cases. Furigana converters like jparser and VNR's furigana converter basically allow you to circumvent the need for kanji-knowledge by putting romaji or kana atop the kanji to make them comprehensible to the kanji-illiterate. If you haven't mastered ALL of the radicals (with an understanding of WHY they effect the kanji they are attached to the way they do), as well as all of the kanji seen in everyday use, you shouldn't even make the attempt to play without these tools. Sorry, I ranted. However, too much importance is placed on learning kanji, when it isn't really necessary to learn it before jumping into VNs. Rather, you should understand their function. Kanji function similar to the way parts of our words such as -ology (biology, astrology, etc using it as an obvious example) function, in that they lend specific meaning to widely-used syllables, which can lend the reader a richer understanding of certain words... if they already know those words, can recognize them in the context of the sentence, situation, and/or conversation. Symbolic writing's advantage over and disadvantage against phonetic writing is summed up right there. More meaning can be more easily conveyed in the written language, and thus understanding of the spoken language is weakened (thus too much kanji too early can lead to poor or flawed understanding of Japanese as a whole). Really, it is best to balance them out, but if you want to read VNs... learning the spoken language then using those tools is the fastest, most effective way to do so. I advocate a spoken-language-leaning approach because it results in better understanding at the endpoint, but others prefer to enter from kanji because it provides a seemingly easier (if you are really good at memorization) route to simply stealing the gist of what is being written by just extracting the kanji and staring at them until you THINK they make sense. This is also why Japanese>Chinese>English translations are just... terrible in most cases (speaking from experience as a fansubber/fantl). The illusion of understanding without any grasp of the subtleties is usually all that kanji without a greater understanding of the language gives you. Edit: Sorry, I've had several people I know jump into VNs with kanji knowledge but a weak understanding of grammar... and the results to their understanding of what went on were hideous. I couldn't believe some of the results (see the English reviews on the web of Devils Devel Concept, for instance... they don't even resemble the actual game). Seeing the light bulb go on above their heads when I explained the meaning of a key line was gratifying for me... but also disturbing. It wasn't so much about the generalized (very generalized) meaning... it was that they missed most of the key details of what was going on, details that frequently defined everything that happened after that, even though they didn't seem important at the time.
