  2. A Note Before Reading: I realize this isn't a topic to take lightly, but I'm interested in hearing other people's viewpoints on the subject. Historically they're a major part of the medium, and so I feel they're worthy of some discussion. ********* I'm not a fan of H-Scenes. I love VNs too much to give them up, but when *those* scenes come up I generally click through at high speeds, looking away kind of awkwardly. (Now, I realize that there are two types of H-Scenes: ones intended to be "tasteful", and others in games which are blatantly sex-oriented. All of my comments are directed to the former, as the latter are... well... they are what they are.) Is it because I'm "afraid" of sex or sensuality? No way. I'm happily married and therefore have a healthy context to this stuff. Rather, I feel like H-scenes cheapen the VN experience. I understand that these scenes can represent a culmination of romance between two characters, but I don't understand why they have to be so graphic. I feel like these scenes are included in VNs for the same reason they're included in most AAA movies: the obligate sex-appeal to be used for advertising. That's the short version of my opinion, more or less. I'm interested in hearing what others think. Again, I realize this isn't the easiest topic to discuss, but I'm interested in sounding out.

  4. Gold, although I don't play much (I have like 20 ranked games since HoTS came out). How can I then say its one of the best games of all time? Well its simple, the esport surrounding it brought me so much entertainment time, maybe even more than any other game from the list. The competitive match is always different in some way, unique. Yes, it might be exactly the same strategy the players choose, but the outcome is always different, dependent on the players themselves. Builds are only the foundation of the strategy in the game itself, you can copy exactly the same opening as some progamer but you can never be able to make the exact same decision later in the game, not even them can make the exact same decision in 2 similar games and that's what makes SC2 so good. (for more talk, there is sc2 topic in general, we talked lot about the esport side of the game there so you can read and join topic).

  7. In my experience, it's difficult to get a consensus on which game is Key's best. 3 different people will give you 3 different answers. It's as if each game resonates with a different section of gamers. To me, Clannad swung viciously from incredibly funny to really boring back to incredibly funny. It was an incredibly inconsistent and frustrating experience. I ended up dropping it 10 minutes into afterstory. Kanon, however, constantly had me in tears and is still my favourite Key game.

I'll just give you some big names that're common around here: "Rewrite"; "Katawa Shoujo" & "Hoshizora no Memoria". If you liked "Clannad" and want an epic story, go for "Rewrite": it's made by the same people. If you'd like to see a unique game made by English speakers, try "Katawa Shoujo". If you'd like cute moe girls and sex tied together with a decent plot, play "Hoshizora no Memoria".

^ The Second Reproduction is actually dark compared to the others on this site. Yes, it has some light-hearted moments, but for the most part it's centered on politics, morals, and religion. I'd start with Boku no Shokora since it's short (less than 2 hours) to get her into the feel of what visual novels are like. Then follow up with either Starry Sky ~In Spring~ or Yo Jin Bo. The latter has more comedy though imo. Sweet Fuse is coming out at the end of this month, so if she has a PSP or can emulate it, that's a good one to show her after SS & YJB. From what I've seen it's a bit more serious but is still light-hearted for the most part. Save Hakuouki or The Second Reproduction for last since it's more plot-orientated and the romance gets casted off to the side at some points. tl;dr: Boku no Shokora --> Starry Sky ~In Spring~ or Yo Jin Bo --> Sweet Fuse --> Hakuouki or The Second Reproduction

When I introduced my sister to VNs, I used 'Second Reproduction'. It's a light-hearted, romantic, funny VN (with a plot which changes depending which route you take) that is short and feels exactly like a shoujo manga. It's all-ages too (I think). It was a great success, she ended up loving it. I couldn't recommend using Starry Sky in Spring, or Yojinbo - they're not as good. If you want to introduce someone to VNs, you should use the best ones you can get your hands on. I know nothing about Boku no Shokora. I also second Aaeru's suggestion concerning Hakuoki. Quality, QUALITY game! Link to review of Second reproduction, contains spoilers - http://animeguyspl0x.wordpress.com/2012/06/07/the-second-reproduction/ VNDB site - http://vndb.org/v3319

hey there's also hakuoki on PSP (very hard to run on emulator, better to use real psp) and love revo on NDS (http://vndb.org/v3549) and tokimeki memorial 1 and 2 (http://vndb.org/v857 and http://vndb.org/v858) sweet fuse is in 23 days (http://visualnovelaer.fuwanovel.net/2013/07/sweet-fuse-release-date-is-27th-august-2013-preorder-now/) ^ also psp but i think this one will be easier to emulate or you can always go for dangan ronpa? https://fuwanovel.net/novels/116

  16. >dropping Key VNs after liking another Key VN. Well, putting this guy's attention span aside, I'd recommend Little Busters first and foremost. I feel like it's fun, relatable, and not too long or difficult to read. Jun Maeda's writing in After Story combined with some potential machine translation in the VN might've been too much for Rooke =p This chart is pretty useful: http://i3.minus.com/ibyiFZk1vkwSQI.png Top VNs from VNDB: http://vndb.org/v/all?q=;fil=tagspoil-0;o=d;s=rating Fuwanovel and something are probably the quickest sites to get some of these VNs. I'd also recommend Ever17, Symphonic Rain, Clannad, G-senjou no Maou, Steins;Gate, Grisaia no Kaijutsu, Fate/Stay Night, Hoshizora no Memoria, Planetarian, Saya no Uta, Sharin no Kuni. The Muv-Luv trilogy is long but worth it if you can get past the first VN. Whatever visual novel you pick, OP, try to stick to it and finish it before starting another one. Most visual novels are structured to have the better written routes, story arcs, and climactic impact at the end. In my experience, most start out kind of boring. I'm bored pretty easily, but the reward in the parts of VNs that I find enjoyable is well worth the sometimes tedious adventure. I don't think there's a VN I've played that I felt was worse towards the end than in the beginning, besides Rewrite.

  17. LOL this question is clearly not to be question.... its either yes or no...clearly up to the game company... let me tell you something...H-scenes is clearly for fans to get hook(japanese fans).... we aint the ones who decide...we are out from their jurisdiction. there are stories which h-scenes are necessary and others dont need to be.. only few pc games which has no ero scenes can be found well which is kinda sad..... only non-ero visual novels are console..... so no point arguing about it...
