[Kickstarter] Tokyo Dark

Soulless Watcher

Since I got back to work at my summer job I allowed myself to take a look at some ongoing kickstarter projects, since I will no longer be completely broke. After scrolling past the standard board games, the increasingly ridiculous looking dices, and another god damned VR set I stumbled upon Tokyo Dark and nearly creamed my pants in excitement.

Story summary: "Detective Itō`s partner is missing - but what starts as a straightforward case soon spirals into a twisted nightmare that causes Itō to confront her past and question her own sanity. Is there really a lost door deep below Tokyo? Are there living shadows, lurking in the dark? Will the past come back to haunt you, or should you stand by your decisions?"

Apparently, Tokyo Dark will attempt to blend cinematic storytelling, as seen in Heavy Rain, with point and click adventures, like in Clocktower. While adding some Higurashi and Corpse Party to their story.

There looks like there will be some good stuff for vn and game lovers like us....

- Branching Story with 10 endings.

- Puzzles with multiple solutions.

- Decisions influence "stats" that open up certain choices and close others.

- Very non-linear story.

However, the main thing one must look at if interested in throwing money at a kickstarter is the staff behind the project and, quite frankly, it does seem to be a bit of a gamble relying on these chaps. Don't get me wrong the group behind the project seem reasonably talented enough (according to my brief google search), but it does appear that they are pretty new to developing games. They try to compensate for their lack of experience by having something called the "Square Enix Collective" approve their project, which just kinda feels werid. Is Square getting self-conscious and has to inflate its ego by judging indie developers?

In the end though, it dosn't matter to me, for I had my wallet out at the 0:25 mark of the trailer. I'm ashamedly an easy fish to catch.

I'm sold. I thought it was going to be some sort of Tokyo Ghoul fangame by the looks of the thumbnail, but I was pleasantly surprised. I'll definitely look out for this, though I don't know about backing it :amane:

square enix always makes good games and i looked at this collective square thing. collective square enix has very strict rules, you cant just have an idea for a game you need a reason for it. so i do belive that this game will be out soon.

They have a workable pre-alpha that they showed to the collective, a beta release for backers is planned for early 2016. So, it still has a ways to go.

Hello! Sorry to butt in, but I came across these forums when checking up on Tokyo Dark.  I work for Square Enix Collective, the initiative helping Tokyo Dark with their Kickstarter.

I just wanted to drop in here to see if you guys had any questions about the game or about Collective itself. I'll try and answer any of them as best I can.

We're certainly not trying to inflate our ego by judging indies ;) Quite the opposite actually. Indiegames are awesome. We let our community decide which games they'd like to see get funded and in some cases we also offer to help support the title through crowdfunding. Our support isn't monetary but more of a help with marketing and communication - getting the word out there. More on that here.

In the briefest possible words, Collective is about showcasing indie games to the Square Enix Community and also ensuring that any projects we decide to support have the capabilities and the drive to complete the game.

It's no secret that Kickstarter can be a risky venture at times, but we can at least try and mitigate that risk by vetting certain teams for you beforehand. We of course can't guarantee a game will be made, but we can make it a lot more likely.

I don't want to post too much of a wall of text but please do let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to elaborate further! :)

I enjoyed playing all of those games xD.

It seems like something I'd be interested in playing~ and I really like the artwork.  I wonder how dark and scary it really is though.

I'll probably support it. It's also nice that they'll have it both on Windows & Mac.  ^_^
