A Bit of News for Old Hands

Just a bit of warning for those who are using really old versions of Translation Aggregator... to be blunt, they don't work with the current version of Windows 7 or 8. To be more specific, the way the old versions use the dictionaries causes a bug where the application no longer pastes the clipboard contents. I hadn't updated mine since the 2012 update, so I was really surprised when, after I updated my Windows (on both my work and personal computers) that TA stopped working. I figured out what was wrong and went ahead and got the newest version, which was made earlier this month, but it was still a bit of a shock when the reliable tool I'd been wielding for speed-reading VNs suddenly stopped working, lol.

The 0.4.9.r171 version of TA has been around for a while now. At least a year I believe.

One guy I know likes the older version of TA more as it works better on his comp. The newest one starts up like 10x faster though haha.

0.4.9 has been around for years.  I recently had to upgrade from 0.4.8 to fix a clipboard bug that would crash it whenever the application saw a website url.  But even 0.4.8 worked fine in Windows 7 x64, and that's been around for maybe 3 years now.

Whats the difference between the way the new one does conjugations and the old one?

I don't like the way the newest one does conjugations... too much idiot hand-holding...

One of the things I liked about the old version was that it was minimalist... also used the simpler version of the rules for romaji (no characters unavailable in English alphabet, small tsu combos expressed using doubled letters, double e sound expressed as ei).  It is a lot of little things that irritate the hell out of me, since I learned romaji usage like seventeen years ago.  Also, a lot of the fun of using jparser is the mental activity you are forced to when it gets common phrases' actual sounds wrong...lol.  At first, I had trouble figuring it out, but I learned kanji really quickly because of that...

Uhh. I upgraded the TA and now it's really weird. It parses so much... randomly? lol. It parses そうであれば completely as a phrase, and shows you the definitions for 壮

Yeah... it is really weird.  If anything, there are more wrong kanji conjugations than before... it is like whoever put it together had only a limited concept of how modern Japanese works.  I'd understand if they defaulted to common usages, but most of the time it defaults to really weird usages, even moreso than the old one... and at the same time, it uses really stupid methods to bring attention to things like the small tsu...

Edit: To be honest, if you can't learn to recognize when they are using the ん intonation followed by a i u e o sounds rather than a na ni nu ne no sounds without aids like an apostrophe, you probably need to concentrate on learning to read auditory nuance in language in general.  Japanese isn't a language you can comprehend without being able to pick up something that basic without aids.

Oh, and all 'ha' sounds, either katakana or hiragana, are romanized as 'wa', which is ridiculous when you see 'hachi' as 'wachi' (as an example) which is ridiculous.

That's a feature, not a bug.  Recognition of phrases tends to be more accurate (and useful) than simply telling you what the individual word means.  For example, telling you the word-by-word meaning of an idiom without the overall meaning is useless.

Jparser has never been able to deal with dialects very well.  Aeon's speech patterns are based on a very specific stratum of society (old families of wealth) influenced somewhat by modern speech.  My main complaint is the presentation and the even more frequent incorrect conjugations I've been running across.  I was more or less used to the quirks of the old version, but it screwed up a lot less frequently on modern speech than this one does.  When it comes to narrative, it makes the same mistakes, but the amount of mistakes (and really stupid ones) in everyday speech has increased by about 1.2, at least in my current experience (which is admittedly only a single path of this VN so far).

The problem is that it's wrong. そうであれば is just a bunch of grammar, and is in no way related to 壮.

What??? I've never seen a blatant bug like that O.O.

I found it slightly useful when I had forgotten passive/potential conjugations for some type of verb after not reviewing them for a few years.

Never touched the romanji, so no comment there.

Jparser and MeCab give different furigana.  MeCab seems to guess furigana more accurately, while Jparser does a better job recognizing grammatical constructs and compounds, if I remember correctly.

ATLAS gets it right though (If it is so).  MeCab breaks it into pieces in a less useful but still correct manner.

The nice thing about having multiple tools is that only one needs to be accurate.
