Tsuyokiss つよきす [Candy Soft]

Foreword: I took up Tsuyokiss blindly hoping for a decent charage akin to Majikoi (same writer and also girl with katana) due to the high score this game gets. Moege equals trash for me. With such a high vote Tsuyokiss can't be a moege, right?

Synopsis: Tsuyokiss is about the lives of a group of high school students and the often comedic events that occur around them.

The protagonist is an ordinary boy named Leo Tsushima. He is secretly in love with the eldest daughter of the Kiriya Corporation, Erika Kiriya, who is also the student council president.

One day, a senior female student, Otome Kurogane, knocks out several of the main characters when they were trying to sneak into school being late. Surprisingly, it turns out that she is Leo’s beloved cousin that he had not seen for years. And she decides to move in to the same house with Leo, whose mediocre life starts to change into something a lot more exciting.

Tsuyokiss is a pure trash moege. If you want to see a favorable review, go elsewhere (1 2 3). I've got nothing but obscene words for this trash game.

Basically all I can do is list multiple flaws of this game:

1). There is absolutely no story. We go to school.

2). There is actually no main heroine. Otome does not really stand out among heroines in any way. Her katana is just a decoration to describe her club. Yoshimi route opens up last and tries to introduce some drama which gets smashed down and thrown in the recycle bin next. Good job.

3). There is no humor. Well, unless crying loudly some crap with a funny voice counts for it, because that's in abundance. Parrot and our poor kani contributes to the most of it (Kanisawa Kinu is called Kani for short, and that actually means crab - it suits her so well). I tried to dissect SOL scenes in search for some humor, and there is no humor that makes sense and can be explained.

4) Tsundere is still a thrilling personality for me (probably because games that I played had usually one decent tsundere). In Tsuyokiss there is only one tsundere Nagomi, strictly speaking. But Otome and Erika have strong elements of tsundere as well. Well, I just can't understand how it's possible to play out tsundere concept that bad with such bland characters.

5) Tsuyokiss equals porn. For a good half of individual routes there is nothing but H scenes in a long long row. Really - about 10 H scenes (sometimes more) for each heroine all smashed together in the end. As everything else it's done poorly and only deteriorates the overall impression by degrading heroines characters.

I played the Complete edition and can only guess how bad original PC edition initially was. PS2 release got the highest score, because heroines save some decency without this marathon of banging. It's a complete mystery to me how a moege can be given somewhat high score, anyway. I follow Candy Soft works since their start in 1997, and they could only make peculiar funny nukige. Well, congratulations to Tsuyokiss, it follows the trend just perfectly. And it looks as Candy Soft just decides to cash out while it scores, so it releases the same games with some alterations of 2gakki and 3gakki later on - how shameless is that? That actually puts it on even worse stature than Circus. Circus at least changes names and hair colors in their endless flow of monotonous crap. Well, the minute of anger is over. I don't want anything to do with Tsuyokiss franchise ever again.

Thanks for lowering my expectations. MajiKoi is one of my favorite VNs because every character was memorable and got a decent amount of screentime (before the roster got bloated in S), so the other reviews saying Tsuyokiss is even better would overhype me.

After finishing it, i respect how it kinda tried to deconstruct moege (in the sense that you wouldn't predict the heroines' personalities based on how they look on a cover), but a lot of the routes just slowed down to a crawl after the confession. The characters and humor (that is up my alley) make it a "good, but not great" VN for me.

Ok, Kvan's viewpoint on this game is fairly similar to the one I had the very first time I attempted to play Tsuyokiss (needless to say, abortive).  To be blunt, the greatest attraction of the Tsuyokiss series is that it is a very retro-style charage series based in the Majikoi universe.  I say retro-style because it has all the hallmarks of early moege/charage.

1.  A tsundere

2.  A crazy osananajimi next door

3.  A yandere extra heroine

4.  An arrogant rich girl heroine

5.  A proliferation of unreasonably violent heroines

There are a few stand-out points to the series.

1.  The protagonist's best friend is a gigolo who survives by selling himself to older women.

2.  The series IS a series, and it is best taken that way (essentially, play only the heroines you want then move on to the next game, lol).

3.  You get to see the original cast as adults in the second half of the series.

4.  Cameos from the characters of Tsuyokiss make brief appearances in Majikoi A

As for quality... I think Kvan goes too far.  Tsuyokiss isn't the best charage I've ever played, but it is still a charage.  As such, my advice to anyone considering playing it is don't compare it to Majikoi (worst possible mistake, since the themes and genres are different).  If you like charage, it might be worth playing it.  If you don't like charage, don't bother.

I guess my mistakes were:

1. Having high expectations and playing it blindly.

2. Playing it alongside Saihate no Ima and comparing the two absolutely different games.

3. Following a formed tsundere image as a cute small-to-middle height girl. All tsuyokiss tsundere are tall and not cute.

I really take pure charage badly. Need a circle of friends or some clear plotline to follow. Or at least a strong funny common route. Unfortunately, Tsuyokiss common route is both short, not funny, and it barely touches each heroine without really having time to present them well. In individual routes all the other heroines present vaguely, there is not enough inter-communication between heroines and atmosphere building. All the best charage are still ahead, I hope to adapt to this genre eventually.

Unfortunately, beginning around the same time, the rate of charage to other non-nukige VNs tips definitively in favor of charage.  It is only in the last few years, as the demographics and economic realities have changed, that things have begun to balance out somewhat.

One thing that I think vndb lacks is a 'pure slice-of-life' tag... because for people who want to avoid that sort of thing (or the reverse) that tag would be useful.
