Ouka Sabaki: Some preliminary comments

Clephas

Because I'm a mystery-hater, there is an even chance I'll drop this VN somewhere along the line, so I'll describe what those who are interested should look at when it comes to this game.

For lovers of the Ace Attorney games who don't mind or like ero content, this game is looking to be an interesting one.  Each chapter has an evidence-gathering part, followed by a part where the protagonist and his allies (I say allies because several of them are backed by outside influences or are outright under the control of individuals hostile to the protagonist) talk about who they think the culprit is.  Last of all is the judgment stage, where the protagonist uses evidence such as physical objects, the shapes of the rooms, the statements of the suspects and others, and other issues to figure out who the culprit is in a public forum, preferably gaining a confession of guilt in the process (this is fairly standard for Japanese police even today, as there is a strong preference for confessions over going to trial).

There is also violence involved, since not all suspects are willing to come along quietly, lol.

Speaking of Mystery, have you really not played the Kara no Shoujo series? (don't see ratings for em from you on VNDB)

The first one was a bit on the slow and boring side imo, but if you stick with it I really think KnS2 deserves to be considered a VN that everyone with the stomach* for it should give a fair chance. It's really interesting from start to finish with a great sense of a period of Japanese history we don't get to see too much, along with good usage of the contrast between old-fashioned rural life and the modernizing urban society. Also, its a rare VN that actually feels entirely like a story for adults beyond the fact that it has sex scenes lol.

The prequel, Cartagra was slightly more enjoyable for me than the first KnS but less refined all around. Certainly worth reading as well though.

*The gore is probably not to be taken lightly (though I'm desensitized so I wouldn't be able to say how disturbing it is), and the true ending to the sequel is truly a massive gutpunch.

I just mentioned I don't like  mysteries, lol.  I also don't like mystery-horror.

But the great Clephas doesn't strike me as someone to dismiss a title purely out of genre-bias... :X

I don't like Mystery at all either. And hated every minute of having to follow a walkthrough for the detective bits. But KnS2 was worth it; the mature tone and proper care taken to make sure you cared about the mystery which was unfolding made it much more like a regular story with a mystery at its center rather than yet another example of the "Mystery Formula". It's also not horror by any definition. Just very brutal.

Honestly pretty surprised you aren't more familiar with it since its very well regarded.

Hmm, a murder mystery placed in a past Japan scenario?! Color me interested - that seems right up my alley.

Considering I'm currently replaying Kara no Shoujo 2, I can definitely say that it's pretty tame in comparison to its predecessor, almost slice-of-lifey at times. However, considering that Clephas rated the apparently very violent Tokyo Necro and Sakura no Mori pretty highly, I assume it's more than just the gore and he just isn't a big fan of the whole style and flare of the KnS series. Fair enough though, I'm not a fan of every title that's celebrated as the holy grail of visual noveling by the community either. :P
