    Fabulous on Fuwa - February!

    By Kaguya

Welcome, fellow Fuwamembers, to the FuwaRecognition thread. Starting this March, we’ll be highlighting some of the best contributions made by our members each month. From snazzy blog articles to delicious forum threads, and perhaps even a few things more on the shitpost part of the spectrum, we'll keep an eye out for the cream of the crop. And then we'll gather them here. Just for you.   *holds up giant APPLAUSE sign*   A-hem, so this is the first time we're doing this and it might be a bit rough; next time will be at the end of March. Anyways; without further ado, let's get to our highlights.    By @Zakamutt.   Threads   Our first highlight on threads comes from two Ask Me Anything topics posted in the span of this month: from our dear provisional Tay, @Kaguya, and from the anti-moege task force founder himself, the saltlord himself @VirginSmasher.   It’s now Kags’ fifth year on these dear forums, and members of new ’n old had a lot of questions, climbing over to 50 comments, almost unheard of in this day and age of lacklustre forum interaction. Even after the glory days of lolis long passed, Kaguya still swears close to his heart how they indeed are the master-race that rule over this weeb-dom, mostly in nukige form. Charming.   @VirginSmasher’s AMA, on the other hand, is mostly an appreciation of past glory and his good friends, met before he died out, but he also remembered some newer members who are already becoming an integral part of these forums of today. Quite a lot of internal banter and jokes flew here and there, but it is quite touching to see even older members returning from long breaks of apparent irremovable death.     As you might have seen, we have a new EVN on the horizon, or rather, KickStarter: One Last Crane, developed by @Blissful-Works This visual novel is being developed by an Indonesian team with some members over at Tokyo, Japan, and it has a an odd goal amount of 10,052 dollars, though this is due the publicization of the project being handled from Japan, which also makes the whole project page ask all money in yens. A risky play, let’s see if it pays out for them. The novel is planned on being released for four languages: English, Japanese, Chinese, and Indonesian. Quite the amount for still quite a small goal, but we’ll have to see how it pans out in the end, at least they are in no shortage of ambition. While the art-style itself is quite generic, it does look modern and does its job as presentation well enough, not to mention that the KickStarter page itself is quite stylish, but only time will tell how it’ll go over. All we can do is wait.   @EastCoastDrifter has done something unique on the forums that no one would even think of. He loves space, and he has extended his love to the members of the Fuwanovel community by creating a Fuwanovel Solar System. Using a program called Space Engine, Drifter has taken the liberty to name all planets in this system after very prominent Fuwamembers. It’s a great tribute to the community and you should really check it out. Furthermore, Drifter says he’s not done, and has plans to create more Fuwa solar systems to feature more members in the future. If you want a planet named after you, feel free to post in the linked thread or contact Drifter personally.   By @Arcadeotic and @EastCoastDrifter.   Blogs Hi I'm Zaka and I'm the only one that cares about blogs on the team. Maybe. I didn't actually ask the other guys. Shit. So uhh, here's my recs...   @Clephas writes accessibly about (for the most part) untranslated Japanese visual novels. This time, we have some posts about the recently released third VN in the Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru series, of which the first actually has a translation by MangaGamer. Unfortunately, the second is where people think it actually got good. We start with a more general note on the series, then move on to a review of Otoboku 3 itself.   While Clephas has been writing for quite a while, @MaggieROBOT is a bit newer to the scene. She focuses on Otome and BL VNs, and for this post we'd like to show you her post on an upcoming BL visual novel (fresh from the pot, baby. That thing is probably the first blog post to come right after this one. Oh yeah. That's how we roll. - Kaguya) as well as her review of the robot-romance Otome VN Sakuya. Go ahead and look for her post complaining about a trap in a moege not having a route if you like things on the more humorous side of the spectrum
Just For Fun!   During the process of writing this post.     Well you know I’m all about that nepotism baby. That's right, this is just for you. Rising 1.8% female readership (thanks Maggie) local GM and blog post connoisseur Kaguya here. To close the blog review section up, we’ll be highlighting the post where I wonderfully delve into the mind of writer Setoguchi Ren’ya, explaining his past and his involvements with the little-known work The Shawshank Redemption as well as how that work affected the VN industry, finishing things with a bang as I explain his history and the hidden messages within Swan Song. And finishing things off in a suitable grand scale, much like a writer who traps himself into writing continuously larger powerlevels until his shounen manga gets to a point where it doesn't even resemble the original, we will be looking at two posts made by Fuwanovel's current closest figure to Jesus, @Kiriririri (Who unlike our creator, did revive. How about that?) He died for our sins as he bravely made two deep posts about the current state of the VN community that were completely hidden by the evil staff... Until now. Gaze upon them and marvel, this is the true work of a genius!! February is over. We bled. We sweat. Friendships were broken and renewed, and old members revived from their graves and mingled with the new pringles to take us where we are now. And the community persists, as glorious as ever.  March is here. And in this rewind, I declare FebruaryFuwa absolutely Fabulous!

Another quick project plug: Luna Translations just released their v1.0 English patch for the Majo Koi Nikki (a.k.a. Witch's Love Diary) demo. And guess what? You should totally go get it. I've been helping out with their proofreading, and I can tell you they've done a bang-up job so far.

Best part? It's super easy to obtain. Qoobrand offers the trial, which covers the game's prologue, as a free download on their site. (You'll want to grab the first one, not Trial 2.) Just download it, patch it up, and Robert's your mother's brother. Just so you know, he gets a little grabby after two or three scotches.

It should also be said that Qoobrand jammed a bunch of H-scenes into the early hours of MajoKoi. Consider that fair warning... or the clang of a dinner bell, if you're hungry for that sort of thing. Unlike a lot of VNs, however, those sections are there for a reason.* MajoKoi is set up as an intricate puzzle, and the oddly early placement of the H is all part of the larger mystery.

So go on — pull up a chair, order yourself a Dragon Burger (medium rare), and settle in for a small taste of what Majo Koi Nikki has to offer.

    * Not a good reason. But a better reason than most, at least.

  3. At first I intended to make a review for Fuwareviews, but it wouldn't be fair. I tell you, I felt bad about it. (Of course I'd be so so happy if Bats let me do it, but I think I have to explain everything first) And I'm writing in the most mumble-jumble way I can, but that's how my thought process is right now. Earlier this year, and based on the demo only, VNDB just sort of let VA-11 HALL-A be added to the database. There was resistance and I understand why would there be, yet the argument I had made was that the bartending was not so much a system in itself as it was a choice system. I was hoping for it to keep this way just so it could be kept on VNDB because, in case you guys don't know, that's a prerequisite for us to make a Fuwareview (either the game is on VNDB or was made by a company that made VNs before and has kept enough VN elements for us to review it as one. I think it's kind of my fault that we have these parameters. Black Closet is even less of a VN than LLtQ, but we reviewed it anyway and Ryechu had to come up with a reason to justify it being there. Or that's how I see it. Sorry if I missed the mark, Ryechu), but

Turns out in the full version the money you get has its uses and sometimes you will use the system for the system's sake, that is, make a more expensive drink just to get more money so that you can pay the electricity bill. I didn't know what happens if you don't pay it, but it doesn't matter because I thought it would be a game over or something. It wasn't. It just makes Jill distracted, which in turn makes her not remember what drink people asked for (and so it's you who has to remember. Not quite the "VN-breaker" if you ask me, because all the information is still in the text, but still feels so much more like a sim game when it happens). Otherwise the bartending system is indeed a choice system, and an incredibly clever one at that. The point I'm trying to get across is that I can't call VA-11 HALL-A a VN... yet.

Because it's what I hope VNs will become one day.

Absolutely everything works for the story in ways you seriously wouldn't expect. For instance, the fact that bartending is your choice system means your choices have a scope and that means when someone doesn't show up for God knows how many days, you know that there's nothing you can do about it. You can't rescue them with drinks if it comes down to it. This alone makes choices more meaningful, because there's only so much you can do for your friends. You can hear them out, give them the drink that cheers them up, but that's about it. The fact that you enter a story knowing your place and everything works for the story (like I said, in the end every possible consequence, including not being able to pay for your rent, changes the story ultimately instead of being a progression in itself (mostly. You can unlock more songs and buy stuff to decorate Jill's room)) makes every relationship you build, every story they tell count. And not because you need the information to get more money, but because it's the people you care about. You want them to cheer up. The game systems are a means to tell the story and the story is playable. It's not that oh the game helps telling the story. It's the fucking same thing. It always is. And SukebanGames realized it before every other VN company out there, making the whole thing far more relatable than literally every other VN out there. It hits close to home not in spite of the numbers and the "gameplay" but because of them. Because they're your tool to reach out to the people who live in that universe, including Jill. By acknowleding the game and digital nature of VNs, they overcame it, much likethe old adventure games VNs are based on anyway did.

It does narrate, but doesn't need narration. News outlets, Glitch City's own 4chan, Jill's thoughts etc. It is exclusively dedicated to its text format, but doesn't fear treating it as a puzzle and as a source of meaning at the same time. If it can't be considered a VN, it's because it's VNs that have to catch up - or go back to, in some ways.

I decided to make a blog so I can rant about all the manga I read and hopefully get more people into the medium and perhaps even discover some interesting titles. Granted not everything I will review will be positive, but I will always try to see how a manga could be interesting to other people besides myself as well. Thanks to @Kawasumi for giving me this amazing title for the blog.

For my first post I'd like to talk about one of my favorite manga, Prunus Girl

This light hearted series tells the story of Maki Makito who meets a young girl named Aikawa Kizuna during the entrance exams for his high school. She looks like a true beauty and both he and his classmates are entranced by her. But there's a catch, Aikawa Kizuna is actually a crossdressing boy!

Now I know those of you who dislike yaoi might already be cringing at the thought of reading this, but I'd like to ask you to read this entire review and perhaps give this great manga a chance, because I really think this is one of those cases where a manga knows how to play the tropes to its advantages and reach a wider audience you wouldn't normally see with these kinds of stories.

Starting off with the story itself, there really isn't an overarching plot per se, as each chapter is pretty much its own self contained arc, with a few exceptions that span over 3 or 4 chapters. They all mostly involve Maki and Aikawa in some crazy situation and Aikawa attempting to steal Maki's heart in the process. Although you might think this becomes stale quickly, I believe one of the things that kept me going was the fact that with each chapter the two characters seemed to grow closer to each other. Their relationship isn't a constant back and forward, they actually do develop a mutual bond and it doesn't cause any frustration at all because you know from the get go the two are meant to be together.

Maki might often brush off Aikawa's advances, but ultimately the two are made for each other, and it shows with each chapter. The thing that I really enjoyed the most amidst all this is how Aikawa's gender barely ever comes into play. Yes, it's used as a gag to some degree, but not as a way to say "these two can't be together because they're both boys". It was great to read a story where there really isn't a great wall to climb over in order for love to happen, it was a mere question of time for the characters to form a strong enough bond to be together. Their relationship is honestly one of the most natural I've seen.

Moving on to the characters, this manga actually has a surprisingly diverse cast to look at, and what's more, all of them are pretty accepting of Aikawa's crossdressing. There really isn't much of a rivalry outside of Maki fighting all the boys off of Aikawa in order to protect him. There are a few characters that try to meddle with their relationship, but ultimately nothing really gets out of proportion and all the conflicts between the characters are easily solved at the end of the day.

At 42 chapters, you might think this manga can get stale due to how little "plot" there is, but trust me, these characters manage to grow on you quicker than you'd expect, and you'll find yourself cheering them on and wanting to know what kind of antics they'll be up to next. There's even certain characters that get their own arc, so you'll never feel like a certain character didn't get what they deserved.

Aikawa and Maki might be the center, but their surroundings do a lot to help bring this manga to life, and it's wonderful to see an author knowing how to not disappoint their reader when it comes to side character development.

In terms of artstyle, the manga doesn't particularly shine through I must say. The characters themselves don't get a lot of detail (even the main ones) and backgrounds and few and far between, with the ones that exist not having a ton of detail either. But I think the characters have distinct enough features to at least not have same-face syndrome, so that's something. I also don't believe the art is bad in terms of aesthetics, mind you, it just that it's not particularly detailed. You be the judge I guess.

To close this off, I'd like to at least address the elephant in the room, and that is of course the gay relationship between the two main characters and the question of gender identity as whole. Of course, despite being a romantic comedy, this manga is still ultimately about two guys falling in love with each other (well, it feels more like a bromance, but alas!). I have to be honest and say I do very much enjoy trap characters, so I was obviously biased from the get go when I read this manga, but I think the light heartedness with which the manga takes itself, as well as the fact the characters are all accepting of the situation, makes the reader question things less and instead just presents a fun tale anyone can enjoy. Even at the end, Aikawa's gender really isn't a big deal for anyonee, and I think one key elements of the story is the acceptance of his crossdressing and the fact that, before he's a boy or a girl, he's just a person with a wonderful personality, and that's all that matters.

Prunus Girl is a very fun, easy to read manga. Albeit the subject matter is clearly not one most people are into, I believe the story does a fantastic job of just taking itself lightly and instead focusing on its lively cast of characters and their antics, shifting the focus from a guy on guy relationship to a mere relationship between two people.

I hope people give it a chance, because I think it might really open up the window to this genre to some. I at least have never found a proper manga that works with the theme of crossdressing and gay relationships as well as this one.

So, Kaguya. The final boss of Touhou 8, Imperishable Night, and also the character my whole profile is based on, and my favorite touhou character, all in all.

A long time ago, a bamboo cutter found a baby girl while working.

She was unlike all other babies he had ever seen, being really small, and much more fragile.

While he was a simple bamboo cutter, and didn't have much to provide, after some thought, he decided to adopt her.

And so he took the baby, and he and his wife continued to live their lives normally.

However, after adopting the baby, the man was blessed with fortune. Mysteriously finding gold while working, amongst other things. Everything in his life was working out more than perfectly, to ridiculous levels, and they became a very wealthy family over the years.

During that time, the girl grew up, with unnatural health and beauty.

The girl's beauty was unlike anything ever seen before on earth, and word of Princess Kaguya spread accross the land with shocking speed.

And so, tens, if not hundreds of men came to see the rumored princess. All of them proposed to her, and she refused all of them.

Even after being refused several times, however, 5 nobles would absolutely not give up on marrying her. Kaguya was conflicted, and decided to set them for a trial. She then set 5 impossible requests to bring her different treasures; She would marry the man who managed to bring her one of the treasures first.

The first request was to bring her the stone begging bowl of Buddha. The second was to take a jeweled branch from Mount Hourai. The third was to find the robe of the fire-rat of China. The fourth was to retrieve a colored jewel from a dragon's neck. The final task was to find the legendary Cowry treasure of the swallows.

Upon facing these requests, 2 of the nobles gave up, one tried to swindle her with a fake treasure and one decided to propose to her without any treasure.

One man, however, decided to seek the treasure to the very end, and tragically died in a storm, before he could even reach his destination.

With all of them rejected, word of the princess reched the emperor of Japan, who arranged a meeting with her.

Upon seeing her beauty, he too, could not help but propose to her, which she also rejected, wishing only to live with her family in peace.

Unlike the nobles, however, the emperor kept contact with her, and they would trade letters as friends for a long time to come.

With the passage of time, however, Kaguya began to act weirdly. She would be seen sobbing at night, and acting troubled and depressed.

It would later be revealed that she recovered her memories, and that she wasn't human, but rather a being from a species that lived in the moon, exiled to the earth temporarily as a way to pay for her crime of developing and using a drug that brough her immortality, thus leaving her unclean to the eyes of the lunarians.

That penitence, however, was about to end, and soon she would have to return to the moon.

Not wishing to return, she then decided to hide, and run away.

As a last apology, she made and left one drink of the potion of immortality, asking it to be delivered to her closest friend, the emperor of Japan.

And that would be the end of it, if not for Mokou.

Mokou is the Extra stage boss of IN, and she's quite an interesting one - She was the daughter of the Fujiwara family; The noble who died while doing his impossible request was her father.

She viewed Kaguya as a figure that's almost a demon - someone who charmed and tricked her father to his death.

She then decided that she would have her vengeance, no matter what. And then she stole the drug of immortality, and took it, determined to make Kaguya pay. The drug was completely beyond her expectations, and she felt tricked yet again, being forced into a curse of never dying, no matter what. Realizing her revenge was pointless, but still determined to have it, it's said that Mokou went on a ramapage for 200 years, burning everything that entered her sight to ashes, be it human or youkai, all the while she felt the pain of the fire in her body, searching Kaguya to make her suffer the same.

And that's the start of their story, basically. Though I haven't covered Reisen, Tewi or Eirin, all who are quite important for Kaguya. There's also a lot to expand on Mokou, but I'll leave that for when I explain Imperishable Night.

    For now, cheers!

  6. Katawa Shoujo was a first for me in a few fields, which I might have discussed briefly in an earlier post. It was my first visual novel, and while I'm not exactly a font of knowledge of experience in the medium, it opened me up to a wonderful (if expensive and sometimes questionable) form of storytelling. It was the first exposure I had to a Japanese-style thing, and while not being actually Japanese itself, got me on that road too.

It was also the first internet forum I got properly involved with, back in February 2014. I managed to rack up over 1,000 posts of mostly (if I'm honest) trying to figure out whether Emi or Rin is bestgirl, mooning over artwork, and just general mindless shitposting. Really, I look back on the time and it's a strange mixture of trying to figure out why I spent so much time there, and being sincerely glad I did. Just distracting myself on there and discussing essentially irrelevant bumph helped me out vastly during a crappy stage of my life, and for that I'm forever grateful towards it.

However, being a forum based around a singular VN there's only so much somebody can contribute (at least, without being excellent at art or a damn good creative writer). The amount of times a lemon joke can be made, or a Rinfidel can be declared eventually dries up, and so after spending roughly a year on it, I basically stopped going on there. Every now and then I would pop my head back in to see if I was missing anything interesting, but then even those occasions started to disappear, and about 9-10 months went by.

I figured that, today, I might just see how this little community was doing. I was never what I would call a major part of the community, but as I've already alluded to I was fond of it - I just had nothing left to offer. Yet, I opened it up and what greeted me was a sad state of inactivity. It was, I admit, never the fastest moving forum in the world, but typically things would move at a fair-t'-middling pace most of the time - a good 10 or so topics a day with at least one comment, perhaps one or two with a decent conversation on. But this time, there were 8 topics explored in the 'Public Discussion' field since the start of April. I found one or two conversations - short, but conversations nevertheless - that had taken place, largely among people who were regulars when I used to frequent, but very few new faces.

To be fair, for what it is it's had a bloody good run (the forums themselves opened in 2007 in their current guise) and to call it dead would be unfair - it's not like nothing's happening - but it seems to be approaching a moribund, final state. Whether it happens next year, or the year after, who knows, but for myself it brings a very real feeling of sadness. I understand this is how forums work. People come and go, some stay for longer than others; this is just a fact of life in these places, and for more 'limited' forums one only expects a natural lifespan, obviously culminating in death. But to see a community start to fade, particularly one I held dear during my time there... Yeah, it does bring me down a little.

And that got me thinking. I regularly partake in two internet communities, and it made me appreciate how much I actually feel towards these people; people who I've never met and am never likely to meet. Most will likely phase out as time goes by - be it days, months, years - and I fully expect it will be the same for me. I'll likely only think about them once in a while, a thought like "Oh, I wonder how such-and-such is getting on nowadays". The two I am part of are both far more expansive in their scope than the KS forums - Fuwanovel for... well, obviously visual novels, and the other for music - and I suppose that they will probably last longer than I give them my attention as a consequence. But the fact that these communities leave such an indelible mark on my being, however small I may think they are, means that one day I am likely to feel this feeling of sadness once again, whether I come back to find it nearly gone, or whether I stick around long enough to see it fall.

Sorry for being a bit of a bummer, but this hit me a little harder than I suppose it might/should and wished to vent a little. Here's Renge singing :wafuu:

  7. I won't lie, I enjoyed HuniePop. It was a fun little Bejeweled clone + vestigial eroge + cynical message about base human nature. It was fun to play, fun to replay and even fun to try and 100%-complete. Fun, fun, fun.

The developer's second game is, in many ways, an entirely different animal, at least as far as gameplay and graphics are concerned. Sex scenes are gone, the art style is markedly different, and the genre is probably best-described as a real-time click-happy time management game. In HunieCam Studio, the player takes control of a camwhore operation and has to keep it running by recruiting and managing up to 18 different girls (including the entire "basic" cast of HuniePop, complete with shamelessly reused voice assets).

After employing girls, you can have them perform various activities, the most important of which are (obviously) camming, which earns you money, and posing for dirty photoshoots, which earns you fans. More fans = more money earned from subsequent cam sessions. Fans themselves are attracted to particular fetishes (teen, latina, etc etc), and when a girl performs a photoshoot, she earns new fans based on fetishes she satisfies. Similarly, only fans attracted to a particular fetish will watch the cam session. Each girl starts with two distinct fetishes (distributed in such way that no two girls share both) and can acquire more by means of accessories that you can procure from the adult shop. Each girl also has two skill attributes that can be trained. Talent increases money earned from camming, while Style gets her more fans from the photoshoots. It's all rather straightforward.

Other activities girls can perform include shopping for alcohol or cigarettes (some girls drink and/or smoke, and you have to keep the supply up or they'll get stressed), performing at the strip club (which increases Talent), shopping for clothes (which increases Style), recruiting new girls at the model agency, browsing the adult shop (which lets you pick up one of six random accessories upon completion), relaxing at the spa in order to remove stress, and... visiting a hotel for some "private time" with rich clients. Yes, you can actually be a pimp in this game. I wonder if Steam folks are even aware of that.

All of this happens in nigh-unpausable real time. I mean, sure, you can pause easily by bringing up various management screens, but it's not the kind of game that lends itself to tinkering with things at your leisure. Virtually every resource you earn (money, fans, booze, even friggin' skill points) must also be manually extracted from corresponding buildings by rapidly clicking them (or, mercifully, by clicking and holding LMB). The process can be automated via upgrades, but even then resources trickle very slowly when you're not actively extracting them, and since you can't manually extract them from multiple buildings simultaneously, you're forced to prioritize. Furthermore, you can speed up any current activity using the same method, but ain't nobody got time for that when you're busy gathering the money. All in all, I more or less hated the gameplay in HunieCam Studio. It's simultaneously stressful and boring (I didn't even know that was possible), and all novelty wears off within half an hour, leaving nothing but grind to look forward to. Once you get to 4-5 employed girls, the game turns into the proverbial equivalent of herding cats.

Moreover, some elements of the gameplay system are a bit... illogical. For example, since fans are attracted to a fetish (and NOT to a particular girl), you can have a girl with maxed-out Style do all the photoshoots, and have another girl with maxed-out Talent (and same fetish) do all cam sessions. I'm not an expert at this sort of thing ((c) Kazami Yuuji), but wouldn't at least some of those imaginary people want to see a cam show starring the girl they've actually seen in photos, rather than some other girl who also happens to have Huge Tits or Thick Ass? Not to mention that the above approach is actually more efficient for the player, in terms of both income and time management. Girls' salaries increase exponentially with each skill point earned, and it makes very little sense to level one girl in both Style and Talent. After all, she can't be in two places at the same time, and two girls trained in Talent or Style, respectively, will earn you the same amount of money or fans (and their combined salaries will be lower), with the added bonus of, y'know, being able to do two things instead of one. The game makes specialization in a narrow range of fetishes much more appealing than diversification, but purposefully inhibits your initial ability to specialize. This is solved by hiring girls with matching fetishes (as I said above, no two girls have two identical fetishes, so there is some recruiting strategy involved) and equipping them with identical accessories, thus giving them more matching fetishes. So yes, specialization in both skills and fetishes is the best way to play...

But why would you do that to yourself? Once you get the message, check out all the bios (some of them are admittedly funny), listen to girls' soundbites the first few times and click on things for a while, HunieCam Studio has nothing more to offer you. Now, I hear you can unlock outfits and hairstyles in a similar vein to HuniePop, but I couldn't even get that far. At some point it became clear to me that I'm wasting my fucking time, which is a minor miracle considering how much of said time I generally waste on games without stumbling upon the above realization.

Maybe I'm just not the kind of person that gets hooked on a game like HunieCam Studio, that is a definite possibility. So, you know, I wouldn't advise against buying it. Hell, I had my share of mild chuckles over the course of 2 hours I spent in it. Maybe I'll even go back and resume managing my collection of DFCs (it's one of the easier fetishes to build around, what with two girls who don't demand a lot of money and can be specialized... I wanted to build around fiery latinas at first (cause, you know, thatsmyfetish.gif), but the goddamn Brazilian chick with pre-maxed skills drove me to bankruptcy, so there's that). But the bottom line is, the gameplay is just not very fun unless you're a grind monkey addicted to floating numbers. 'Tis a shame.

If you ask me to think of an impressive feat performed by a human, it would most likely be related to gaming. I'm not huge on traditional sports. Growing up I was always the nerdy kid who was picked last for the football (soccer) and floorball teams every break during elementary school. It also happens that the game that made the 5 year old me a gamer in 1996 was Warcraft II, a real-time strategy game. For many years growing up, I almost exclusively played different RTS games, one of them being Starcraft. I was never any good back then and I'm probably even worse nowadays, relatively speaking.

I found it beyond cool to learn that someone made a visual novel with Starcraft as its focal point. I read that it was a short one so I decided to jump in without reading any reviews or trying to learn whether or not I would enjoy it. SC2VN, of course, is a very peculiar visual novel in terms of theme. It is set against the Korean pro-gaming scene, professional Starcraft II specifically. Somehow I find it very exciting with meta-geekery like this. A video game about gaming, that's right up my alley. Just like Genshiken, a manga about otaku culture, or GameCenterCX for Nintendo DS, SC2VN offers a glimpse into nerdhood in the by now mythical Eden of pop culture that is East Asia. I'm aware a lot of people consider Akiba a sort of Mecca for geek stuff but surely the place to be when it comes to competitive gaming culture is Seoul with its eSports bars, PC bangs and never ending tournaments. Admittedly I have often caught myself fantasizing about living in the east, be it hanging out with my imaginary friends at PC cafes in China and Korea or arcades in Japan.

The game starts with you, a male or female (whichever one you pick) Starcraft II player aspiring to go pro, leaving your home country for South Korea. I found the premise and sometimes also the presentation of it reminiscent of shounen anime such as Hikaru no Go or Bakuman. Certain segments in particular seem to imply that you will become the best (like no one ever was) through the power of friendship and never giving up. There's also some very standard manga character archetypes, especially the former Starcraft champion tsundere girl. That said, there is no romance in this VN and I'd say that's a fortunate omission as it would've severely crippled the realism that, despite shounen tendencies, is always present. SC2VN at times paints a very bleak picture of a hopeless, uphill climb to the top in an industry that doesn't pay as well or has the opportunity for career that other walks of life have. The writing is concise and kept me interested at all times, there isn't much in terms of bloat conversations but the writer(s) still manage to flesh out the characters surprisingly well. I had judged, if you will, most characters in more ways than just “I like” or “gtfo” by the mid point of the VN. It took me a little over 4 hours to get to the true end but I imagine it would be quicker for most people as I'm a fairly slow reader.

I do personally watch Starcraft e-sport and play the occasional game myself but I don't think that's a prerequisite for enjoying this game. It looks far more at the players and their lives as eSports athletes than the game itself and its mechanics. There's also a glossary included in the game for Korean and Starcraft-specific terms used throughout the story. Perhaps the decisions you need to make could be a bit tricky as they're all gameplay decisions but every bad end in the game happens just a few pages after you made the wrong pick so going by trial and error wouldn't be very cumbersome.

All in all I recommend this game, in particular to people who are curious about the Korean gaming scene. Honestly I feel this game has the potential to bring two subsets of gamers closer. Its a perfect entry point for an RTS player to get into visual novels or vice versa, a VN fan looking to get into RTS games.

    Over and out.

    The Saga of PINK

The following is meant to serve as background information for Eclipsed's Danganronpa Steam Giveaway. Try your luck at it, if you dare :upupu:

Question for Giveaway: "Who is the mastermind, The Ultimate Pink?"

    Old Stuff:

    Hello friends of Fuwa,

As you may have noticed, it has happened.

I have changed my avatar from the ever lovable Zero no Tsukaima's Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière to the ever lovable To LOVE-Ru's Nana Astar Deviluke.

Some of you may recall prior to my settling down on Louise that I have had a history of frequently changing my avatar, so this should come as no surprise, though naturally I understand that some people don't like change and so this choice of mine will unfortunately leave a slight bitter taste in your mouth. Oh well~

On the bright side, multiple features and traits have been retained... pink... tsundere.. beating on the perverted male protagonist...flat...Nana looks pretty damn good with her hair down...

    So why the change then?

Contrary to the popular misconception of my preference of the color pink, my favorite color is purple. Now, between Louise and Nana, who has purple? Ding ding ding! Nana.

    1. You really went Louise -> Nana just because Nana has purple eyes?

Yes. Purple eyes are hawt. Give me a character with purple eyes that I really REALLY like and I'll switch to that asap.

    2. RIP Louise?

I still fking love Louise so don't be surprised if I switch back and forth or become a Bandwagoner-Traveler or

    3. So is Nana your favorite character from To LOVE-Ru?

Surprisingly, no. It's still Yami > Momo > Mikan > Yui > Lala > Nana etc... though I am very fond of Nana for her similarities to Louise. Besides, wouldn't you agree Momo or Yami as my avatar would definitely feel off?

    4. What have you been up to (Fuwa-wise)?

My activity on this site -like a few others- has dropped pretty heavily, though I think this is just a phase that we're all going through / it's that time of year and

because we're all gonna abandon Fuwa soon. Maybe. Hopefully?

    5. Brah, you sure pink ain't your favorite color?

Yeah, I'm sure. Though, maybe it's my second favorite color by now?

    6. The name of the culprit will be revealed by The Best Pink.

Chapter 1 - The Death of Louise?

DtKQx8Y.png (30×30)  "This isn't fair! Eclipsed, that baka! I'm supposed to be the best pink! Why would he abandon me for some flat-chested alien?"

0MHO9e5.png (30×31) "Look who's talking! And hey! It's not like I wanted to be his avatar or anything! Didn't you read what he said? He picked me because of my purple eyes, not because of my pink hair.  What kind of reasoning is that...? But it's not like it matters now. Didn't he already change his avatar to Yotsuba?"

DtKQx8Y.png (30×30) "Hmph, you're right. Who cares about Eclipsed, I have Saito anyway.
What about you, Nana? Do you have someone to go back to?"

    0MHO9e5.png (30×31) "W-w-what are you talking about! O-of course I do!
    H-h-h-his name i-i-is R-R-R-Rit-"

DtKQx8Y.png (30×30) "Okay, that's good. Well, I'll talk to you later.
But man, I wonder what Yotsuba had over us..."

    0MHO9e5.png (30×31) : "Huh? O-oh, w-well...there is one thing..."

So who's the best pink? Stay tuned for the next Chapter in The Saga of Pink!

Chapter 2 - The PINK SAGA Begins!

    Louise woke up in a daze.  DtKQx8Y.png (30×30) "Where...Where am I?"

Gazing upon her surroundings, she found she was in a room bathed obnoxiously in the color pink. Pink beds, pink curtains, pink tables, pink chairs, pink carpets, pink doors... pink as far as the eye could see. There was even a pink note on the table. She picked it up and read it:

"Greetings Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière and welcome to the 1st Round of the PINK SAGA, a game designed to determine who is most deserving of the title, "Best Pink". You and eight other contestants have been chosen as the "Nine Pink Maidens" who will have the honor of competing for this title. Congratulations.

Participation is mandatory. Failure to do so will result in a very, very, VERY unpleasant punishment. You have been warned.

Your first task will be to escape from the Pink Room you are currently trapped in. Solve the room's mystery, and you will be able to move on to the next round and be that much closer to obtaining what is truly yours."

Louise immediately crumpled the note and threw it away in a fit of annoyance. "WHAT'S THE POINT OF ALL THIS?!!" She stomped towards the pink door and grasped the handle. *Jiggle jiggle*. "Tch, locked. Well..."

She took a deep breath, brandished her wand, and uttered a single word. "EXPLOSION!"

The pink door was engulfed in a bright light and with a loud PWRRRRFFFFF!!! it was destroyed. "Hmph, so much for solving the mystery". Louise proudly made her departure out of the room, but not before taking one last glance behind her. "Best Pink, huh..."

Her reward for escaping the Pink Room was to be greeted by a labyrinth of hallways & corridors. And more pink. Whatever place she was in was completely composed of this color. It was becoming very disturbing. She began pacing faster, growing more and more anxious with each passing second, searching desperately for an exit. Questions were filling her head. What is this place? Why am I here? Who-

Her train of thought was disturbed by the echoes of running footsteps. She couldn't tell which direction they were coming from, but there was definitely more than one person...two...three...four...five...............eight people, and they were all coming towards her!

Paranoid from her earlier thoughts, she closed her eyes, took out her wand, and began her incantation to defend herself- "EXPL-"

"C'mon! There's gotta be a way outta he- GEH! LOUISE?!" cried a familiar voice.

    "OSION- Huh?!... NANA?! ...And...??!!!"

Louise from Zero no Tsukaima. Nana from To-Love Ru. Clover from Zero Escape. Yumina from Yumina the Ethereal. Sachi from Grisaia no Kajitsu. Rise from Princess Evangile. Madoka from Madoka Magica. Yuuna from Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru. and Inori from Guilty Crown.

    The Nine Pink Maidens.

Only one of them can become the Best Pink...

    Let the PINK SAGA begin!!!
    Chapter 3 - The Best Pink I

"The requirements for becoming the Best Pink are simple: you must be the last person to survive. How you end up becoming sole survivor is up to you. Of course, you may all choose to live here peacefully for the rest of your lives, but I'm sure you all have urgent responsibilities to fulfill in your respective worlds...

Louise - The Kingdom of Tristain needs your power as the Void Mage lest it face ruin. Also, Saito pretty much has no reason to be in Halkeginia if you're not there.
Nana - Mea needs your help to convince Nemesis. Oh, and Rito is up to no good with Momo.
Clover - Welcome to your Fourth Nonary Game <3 ~
Yumina - Kirara is going to give you harsh discipline if you don't show up for the next Presidential Election Debate!
Sachi - Maybe it's good that you're here, so you don't do something crazy at your school...
Rise - Masaya won't be able to attend Vincennes Academy next year if you don't win the Election!
Madoka - Homura-chan is waiting for you.
Yuuna - Everybody in the Hero Club is waiting for you!
Inori - Shu won't be able to stop GHQ without your power...

Only the Best Pink will be granted permission to leave. Who will emerge victorious, I wonder...?
    Let the PINK SAGA begin!!!"

Clover's eyes went wide in disbelief. iZVVvm1.png (30×31) "No...This can't be... not another Zero..." She looked down, visibly disturbed.

Nana was suspicious. 0MHO9e5.png (30×31) "HEY! Cow udders! What's that about another Zero? And what does it mean by this is your Fourth Nonary Game? Are you Zero?"

Clover shook her head in anger. iZVVvm1.png (30×31) "Of course not!"

Yumina stepped in. DWtgzfo.png (30×30) "Wait, you guys! We have to all trust each other if we're going to get out of here! Don't fall for Zero's trap! "

    xNimSbA.png (30×30) "Y-Yumina-chan's right. Let's work together!" Madoka agreed.

AnYQroj.png (30×30)  "We should explore this place, top to bottom. There will definitely be an exit somewhere!" Yuuna exclaimed.
:sachi: "If you all become weary during your search, please come see me. I am proficient in over 50 therapeutic massage techniques," Sachi added.

DtKQx8Y.png (30×30) "Why are you wearing a maid costume?" Louise quipped.

hlxnuOg.png (30×30) "Clover-san, if I may ask, would you mind telling us more about these 'Nonary games' you have been a part of?" Rise inquired.

u2e0WyT.png (30×30) "We should all take the time to talk about ourselves. It would appear that not everybody is from same universe..." Inori suggested.

Clover nodded.  iZVVvm1.png (30×31) "Yeah, you're probably right. I'll start then. My name is Clover Field. In my world, I was a participant in something called the Nonary Game..."

Rise was wallowing in despair. Originally the most high spirited and confident of the group, her extended stay at the Pink Palace has finally begun taking its toll on her psyche.

hlxnuOg.png (30×30) "How long have we been here?...the White Lilies must have lost the election already... Masaya...Masaya's gone now..." Tears formed in her eyes. Her chance to reform Vincennes Academy has long expired. That was all she ever wanted...

BkgKPWc.png (30×30) "Rise-san, there you are!" Sachi emerged from the shadows and walked up to the disinterested Rise. "I have something I wish to discuss with you."

Rise gave Sachi a cold stare. hlxnuOg.png (30×30) "Hoh... And what is it do you wish to talk about? Didn't we all already share everything there is to share with each other? And then we've done absolutely NOTHING but wander around in circles for god knows how long. My world is ruined by now. What's the point anymore?"

Sachi didn't waver. BkgKPWc.png (30×30) "Yes, we've been here for a very long time indeed... But remember, the damage that has been done to your world during your absence can be repaired as soon as you return, and for that you must remain hopeful".

    Rise said nothing.

BkgKPWc.png (30×30) "But I digress. I have come to you to with an urgent proposal: unite with me and Clover against the special ones."

Rise was confused. hlxnuOg.png (30×30) "Unite against the special ones..?"

BkgKPWc.png (30×30) "Surely you've realized it by now, did you not?" Sachi explained. "You, Clover and I are the only individuals without any special powers. Louise, Madoka, Yuuna, and Yumina all have magical powers, Nana is an alien, and Inori is a monster. Clover overheard them plotting to take out the weakest first- that's us. We have to take the initiative". Sachi extended her hand to Rise. "Rise-san, join us".

Rise thought for a moment, eyeing Sachi's hand. She then made her decision. hlxnuOg.png (30×30) "Thanks, but no thanks, Sachi-san. The fact that everyone is finally starting to make a run for the Best Pink just shows that they still have a purpose- their world still has hope. Unfortunately, I no longer have both".

    BkgKPWc.png (30×30) "Tch"

Suddenly, Sachi tossed a canister onto the ground, releasing a plethora of white smoke around Rise.

    hlxnuOg.png (30×30)"Wha-??!!"

The last image Rise would ever see would be a masked Sachi lunging straight towards her with two knives.

    187cCIA.jpg (640×360)

iZVVvm1.png (30×31) "Ahahaha, good job Sachi!" Clover bounced into the room, giving Sachi an ecstatic applause. "You did it!"

BkgKPWc.png (30×30) "Thank you, Clover-san." Sachi replied. "But It really is unfortunate Rise-san decided not to join our alliance..." Sachi removed her gas mask. "How were things on your end?"

Clover gave a sly smile. iZVVvm1.png (30×31) "Tee-hee, they're all E-X-T-E-R-M-I-N-A-T-E-D. It was soo easy to lure everybody else into that bomb-rigged room of yours. All I had to do was scream that I had found an exit, and then once everybody showed up, KAB-OOM! It was spectacular, you should've seen it!!"

BkgKPWc.png (30×30) "I see..." Sachi replied. She took a deep breath. "So... it's just us two now..." She braced herself.

Clover nodded. iZVVvm1.png (30×31) "So it would seem. Thanks for your help, by the way. You really are an obedient one, arent'cha? Truly one of the best maids". Clover's smile became twisted. "But are you... the best pink?" She began laughing hysterically.

BkgKPWc.png (30×30)"Kh-!" Sachi immediately made a dash towards Clover, brandishing her two knives to make the fatal cut-

-But Clover easily sidestepped her attack and drew her own weapon- an axe, freshly stained with blood- and swiftly brought it down on Sachi's neck.

    It was over within seconds.

iZVVvm1.png (30×31)"Tee-hee-hee, didn't I tell you about my job? I'm a much better fighter than I look, silly." Clover began dancing around in joy. "YAAAY!!! Hey, Zero!! I won!! I'm the Best Pink!! NOW LET ME OUT!!!"

*Step* ... *step* ... *step* ... *step* ... Clover's victory dance was quickly halted by the sound of approaching footsteps. She immediately turned to face the source.

iZVVvm1.png (30×31) "ZERO!!!" But then she was frozen in fear as she caught a glimpse of 'Zero'. "No, it can't be...Why..."

'Zero' slowly approached Clover, step-by-step, not uttering a single word, only emitting a very twisted smile. It was as if she was being mocked.

iZVVvm1.png (30×31) "No... Why is it you?! You're supposed to be-!!!"

In a state of panic, Clover raised her axe and began charging at 'Zero'. iZVVvm1.png (30×31) "WHY IS IT YOU?!@#"

Chapter 4 - The Best Pink II

Madoka had made up her mind. There was no choice left.

xNimSbA.png (30×30) "Kyubey! Grant me my wish! Make me a Magical Girl!!!"

D7e8TVR.png (30×30)  "A wise decision, Madoka!" A radiant pink light showered Madoka as she was imbued with the powers of a Magical Girl. "Now go, become the Best Pink, and we'll finally be able to return to our homeworld! Homura's been waiting for us!"

    xNimSbA.png (30×30) "..."

Madoka took off, preparing herself for the horrors she would inevitably face.

DWtgzfo.png (30×30) "It's no good, she's too stro- GHghGH!!!" Yumina was violently pierced through her abdomen, her blood spilling to the ground.

AnYQroj.png (30×30) "YUMINAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Yuuna dashed over to Yumina and embraced her now lifeless body. "Yumina!! Stay with me!! Yumina...! YUMINAAAAA!!!" There was no response. "Sniff... so... that means..." She looked around her. The bloodied corpses of Louise, Nana, Clover, Sachi, Rise, and now Yumina all littered the room. "I'm the only one left..." She sobbed.

*Step...* *Step...* *Step...* Footsteps were slowly approaching Yuuna from behind.

She wiped the tears from her eyes and turned to face the one who killed them all. AnYQroj.png (30×30) "You..." Her mind was filled with rage. A pair of enormous gauntlets formed around Yuuna. It was her Mankai form, blossoming her powers to their full potential.

    iKLaoan.jpg (736×414)
    AnYQroj.png (30×30)"YOU MONSTER!!!!"

The killer gave a dry, hollow laugh before giving Yuuna a cold, heartless stare. "Yes... A monster...That is indeed..."

    s9zwpXe.png (480×270)
    u2e0WyT.png (30×30)...what I AM!!!

Madoka mustered up her courage, and then charged valiantly into the room.

    But it was too late.

At the center of all the chaos was a berserk Yuuna, her fists pounding mercilessly onto a lifeless Inori. AnYQroj.png (30×30) "MONSTER...!!! MONSTER...!!! MOOOOONSTER!!!"

xNimSbA.png (30×30) "Yuuna-chan, stop!!!" Madoka ran over to Yuuna and grabbed her shoulders. "It's over... you can stop now..."

AnYQroj.png (30×30) "Madoka...chan....??? You're still... alive?" Yuuna gazed upon Inori's body. "What... What have I done...?" She began weeping.

Madoka embraced the sobbing Yuuna. xNimSbA.png (30×30) "You had no choice... You did what you had to do."

Yuuna began crying louder. Madoka hugged her harder in return, silently apologizing as she resigned herself to her fate.

xNimSbA.png (30×30) "...Just like I had no choice in what I'm going to do next-"

    AnYQroj.png (30×30) "!!!"

Yuuna gave Madoka a hard shove, escaping from the latter's embrace. Madoka landed on the ground with a glorious light thud, revealing a peculiar pink arrow in her hand. It was obvious what her intent was.

Yuuna was speechless. AnYQroj.png (30×30) "Madoka-chan... Not you too..." Tears were resurfacing in her eyes. Madoka was the most innocent, the most sweet of them all. How could she...? Yuuna couldn't understand it. Everybody had unresolved conflicts in their world, but to actually consider killing others just to return...?

xNimSbA.png (30×30) "I'm sorry, Yuuna-chan. I really am..." Madoka spawned a magical pink bow. "But I have to become the Best Pink. I have to return to my world. Homura-chan and the others are waiting for me."

AnYQroj.png (30×30) Yuuna closed her eyes. "So that's how it's going to be, huh..." She opened her eyes, facing Madoka with the eyes of a hero. She readied her fists- "Well, at least now we'll get to see who's the better Magical Girl!!" -and began charging at the other Magical Girl.

    xNimSbA.png (30×30) "..."

Madoka knew this wouldn't be a fair fight. She took aim at the determined-looking Yuuna... and fired.

    zvh2NJ8.jpg (640×360)

    Madoka stood victorious over Yuuna.

xNimSbA.png (30×30) "Mankai form. A phase where your Magical powers blossom to their full potential. But every flower that blooms must also wilt... If you hadn't faced Inori, you probably could've defeated me..." She grimaced. "I wish you did."

    "Well done. Simply well done!"

xNimSbA.png (30×30) "???" Madoka was startled at the sudden voice. She was the last of the Pink Maidens, so that voice could only belong to one person-

"I am Zero. Congratulations on becoming the Best Pink."

xNimSbA.png (30×30) "Thanks..." Madoka analyzed Zero. She couldn't identify the figure thanks to the ominous black robe and gas mask, and Zero was likely using a voice scrambler.

Suddenly Kyubey came running in.  D7e8TVR.png (30×30) "There you go, Zero! Madoka has become the sole survivor- the Best Pink! Surely you will allow her to return to her homeworld now?"

Zero glanced at Kyubey, then gave a quick snap of the fingers.

D7e8TVR.png (30×30) "!!!" Kyubey immediately was torn apart violently, atom by atom. Madoka could only spectate in absolute horror. xNimSbA.png (30×30) "K-K-kkKyu...bey...?"

"Do not grieve. The Kyubey can replicate itself infinitely in its quest to prevent Entropy." Zero explained. "But never mind that. We have more important matters to attend to..." Zero turned to face Madoka, and took off the gas mask, grinning ever so maliciously at the crowned Best Pink.

Madoka could not believe what she saw under the mask.

    xNimSbA.png (30×30) "No... It can't be..."

    "YOU'RE ZERO?!!"

    /Madoka End/

Chapter 5 - The Best Pink III

There were only two Pink Maidens left.

0MHO9e5.png (30×31) "Don't play dumb! I know you're Zero!!!" Nana was chasing down 'Zero' with all of her might. "It should've been obvious from the very start!"

DtKQx8Y.png (30×30) "I'm telling you, I'm not Zero!!!" Louise was frantically trying to reason with Nana, but to no avail.

0MHO9e5.png (30×31) "Uh huh, sure, LOUISE THE ZERO!!" Nana scoffed. "It can't get anymore obvious than that!!"

    LRVbwnI.png (193×417)

    DtKQx8Y.png (30×30) "That's just a coincidence!!!"

Louise could not believe her luck. Her failures as a Mage led to her being labeled Louise the Zero which then led her to being suspected for being this world's 'Zero'.

0MHO9e5.png (30×31) "Lies!!" Nana clenched her teeth. "Everyone... Everyone's gone because of you." A bright light began forming at the tip of the Devilukean Princess's tail. "I won't forgive you!" She charged at Louise.

DtKQx8Y.png (30×30) "Kh-!" Louise had no choice but to defend herself. She took out her wand. "Explosion!"

Nana easily dodged the epicenter of the explosion and lunged at Louise, elbowing her in the gut and sending her flying backwards. DtKQx8Y.png (30×30) "GghhGH-" this isn't good... I don't have Saito here to protect me while I cast my Void Magic...!

Nana started making her way to the collapsed Louise. 0MHO9e5.png (30×31) "Why... why do all of this...?" The bright light on Nana's tail grew larger with each passing second.

    DtKQx8Y.png (30×30) "I'm.. telling.. you... I'm... not...Zero..."

    0MHO9e5.png (30×31) "..."

Nana was unconvinced. It certainly did not help either that a very, very big explosion was what ended the lives of the other Pink Maidens after everyone gathered when Clover claimed to have 'found an exit', leaving only Louise and Nana the remaining survivors. It was only natural that Nana would thus claim Louise- a wielder of explosion magic- to be the mastermind.

0MHO9e5.png (30×31) "Tch. Stubborn until the very end, huh... Well, whatever."

Nana leaped high into the air, taking aim with her tail...

    0MHO9e5.png (30×31) "Sayonara."

and fired a beautiful ray of light at the fallen Louise.

The attack enveloped the room with dirt and debris, obscuring all vision.

When it finally settled, a defeated Nana was collapsed on the ground, nearing death. 0MHO9e5.png (30×31) *Cough* "I see... so you used your World Door magic to... redirect my own attack to me..." she coughed up blood.

    DtKQx8Y.png (30×30) "Nana... I'm sorry..."

0MHO9e5.png (30×31) "Don't be. I... I know you're not Zero. Besides, since it was just between us two... I thought it would be fun to finally settle... who was the Best Pink... once and for all..." Her voice became faint. "And it looks like... You're the better pink..."

Louise broke down in tears. She hugged Nana. DtKQx8Y.png (30×30) "I- I won't let Zero get away with this! I swear I will avenge you all!"

Nana used the last of her strength to force a smile and gave Louise a slight pat on the back. 0MHO9e5.png (30×31) "Yeah... You do that." Satisfied, she finally closed her eyes.

"Marvelous. Simply MARVELOUS!" a cloaked mask figure stepped out of the shadows, giving Louise a slow applause.

DtKQx8Y.png (30×30) "!!!" Louise faced the enigmatic being.

"So, you're the Best Pink this time around huh Louise? Jeez, it only took you like, what, 26 tries?! Pfffft"

    DtKQx8Y.png (30×30) "You're...!!!"

Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Pink

    (continued from Louise End)

"So, you're the Best Pink this time around huh Louise? Jeez Luis, it only took you like, what, 26 tries?! Pfffft. Y'know, I can't believe you all fell for Clover's 'I found the exit!' herpa-derpa bomb trap for that many timelines!"

    DtKQx8Y.png (30×30) "You're...!!!"

She didn't even have time to exclaim the usual "You're Zero?! IT CAN'T BE!!! WHY?!@#". BS cliffhanger quotes before I so easily slit her throat. I've waited long enough. I've waited for each of the Nine Pink Maidens to become the Best Pink. All for this very moment.

    DtKQx8Y.png (30×30) "Gh...gkH!!!.." Louise collapsed, mortally wounded. "Wh....W-"

"Why, you ask?" I scoffed, ready to begin my long awaited dark monologue. "Simple! Because I LOVE pink!" I roared. "Pink is the best color! Pink is master race! Pink is life! Pink is EVERYTHING!!" I flashed a sinister smile. "And now that I have finally killed all of the Best Pinks..."

I removed my mask in front of the dying Louise in one final act of mockery. Tears welled up in her eyes as she gazed upon me."Sorry. Guess I was the better pink, after all. The best of the best." I turned my back to her, walking away victorious.

    "The Ultimate Pink."

    ///True(?) End///

Louise couldn't let it end there. As Zero walked away, with the last of her strength, she wrote a phrase because writing the killer's name straight up would be no fun: LITTLE GOB

    ///True End///

This concludes the vol 1. Saga of Pink. If noone deduces the Ultimate Pink by 12:00AM PST next week (March 23rd), the culprit's identity will be revealed and the Danganronpa Steam Giveaway cancelled/no winner.

    Chapter 7 - The Fuwans

Louise couldn't let it end there. With the last of her strength, she soaked her finger with her own blood and began etching her last words onto the ground.

"Hoh... is this your final act of defiance, my precious Louise?" I kneeled over beside her and read the phrase out loud. "LITTLE... GOB...? That's your dying message?"  Poor Louise. I was expecting something far more ominous, far more significant. Not that I knew what a 'Gob' was, anyway. Probably some alien cousin to Nana's pet Meda-Q.

I looked at Louise one last time. She wasn't breathing anymore... I ran my fingers through her hair affectionately. "Good bye, Louise."

"Now then..."  I stood up. "It appears the Morphogenetic Field has been accessed... by them..." I put on my gas mask and took off into the shadows as I prepared to make my final stand as the Ultimate Pink.

Last night, I had a rather awkward dream where I awoke underground and noticed that I was alone, as per my daily life. I guess it was a labyrinth of sorts. It took me days to find my way out. It was also hard to breathe.

I call this an odd dream because I usually dream of violence. This time, I dreamed of solitude and purgatory. Other than that, I can't truely say I have actually had a 'normal' dream.

I guess that is why I am here on Fuwa though.

Final rating : It's a good game, play it, it's sorta scary

Very short Visual Novel recommended by Kaguya.

Alright, so first, their WILL be spoiler (maybe, maybe not). The game is less than 2 hours long so you're better up reading it than reading this anyway.

My impressions is that it's a pretty good game for one that relies on it's atmosphere. Honestly, I'm surprised about the intensity of a few scenes, about how with that music and graphics they manage to make you at least a little tense and scared. That's always a good sign.

That summarizes pretty well the very good points of the game, its Graphics and its BGM. Associating dark envirronements with quiet bass heavy background or sometimes high pitched very loud sounds did send chills down my spine. The kind of game which is better played in the dark for a better experience.

Another good point is how beleivable the fall of the narrator into insnity was. Maybe it's the setting or the magnitude of what is happening to him, but I thought it was pretty damn understandable that the guy was shitting his pants.

I'll end up with what I didn't like as much in the game. It's not very fair though since I did like it overall , but it feels more natural for me to present it this way.

First : why fucking highschool chicks ? Why do fuckin' japanese writters need to do this ?

Okay I'll say one thing here, that applies for every manga, VN, anime whatever EVER : Making girls do things they don't usually do (breaking stereotypes) is good IF AND ONLY IF it is not a recurrent pattern in story telling. Problem is, every goddamn male oriented VN writter feels the need to add some cute girl to their games ! It adds nothing to it ! Except making it look so ridiculous that you automatically guess that it's just a way to add characters that you think are original but are actual just ancored in a stupid anime tradition.

So yeah, the two girls in that game : Nada, not good, bad, wrong, out of place, classic.

Second : the story : It didn't make enough sense for me to say : "hey it's a good story". The only thing I thought was that the explanation was forced.

In those cases you can't ask for a real explanation obviously, and this is where it is tricky. "How with a fantastic/imaginary setting, can I this work ?" : I have no dayum clue, All I know is that I didn't buy it.

It's amusing to think that I did like a Story telling game from which I actually didn't really like the story. That artists team did one hell of a job. In a longer game, I don't think the art side can conpensate quite as much as it can in a <2h game.

Final rating : It's a good game, play it, it's sorta scary

  11. Just a preview of characters and their usefulness in the game Eiyuu Senki Gold. I thoroughly enjoyed the series especially in higher difficulties and would like to share which characters are great to focus on.

S Rank - God Tier - Characters in this category are game-changers and will make the battle effortless. Very Hard/Nightmare mode battles become Normal Mode in the presence of this characters.

Achilles - Illuminati's tsundere whose pride is her peerless speed. Boasting 15 base Speed, she will always be the first to move unless the enemy has Gullinbursti. Her attacks have very low delay and her basic attack is Kick which is the best basic for melee. Turbo Kick generates a lot of Brave, almost 2-3x more than what you spent for it if you hit a non-weakness. Her Chiron Step is a 17 hitter and will fill the Brave gauge to maximum if it doesn't hit attribute weakness. Combined with Dagda Mace she can produce +85 delay with this move or 25 delay with her 2 Brave Turbo Kick. Futsuno Mitama also works for her well due to her hit counts or Wind Wheels (+3 Speed) to further boost her speed.

Sun Tzu - Her stats are very well spread for an Art user, with 5/7/8/2. But that's not why she's awesome. Do her events as soon as possible because her Deception passive gives everyone INCLUDING HER a +50% brave gain bonus! It's clearly the best in the game. So that attack that normally gives you 4 brave? It now gives you 6 brave! You can perform your Hero skills much more often with her on the field. Her buff skills are pretty overpowered too: Mountain Training gives +1 STR/AGI and Encourage doubles damage for an ally's next attack. As for equips, you can simply improve her Defense or Agility or give her Starting Brave items like Triton's Magical Shell or Gjallarhorn.

Ishigawa Goemon - She's quite fast and has the best single hitting hero attack in the game due to its 500% multiplier, 50 delay, and guaranteed critical. As long as you can keep her HP at 80% and above, her Flash Skill will always have 100% chance to critical with Onimaru (+50% critical when HP>80%). I gave her Vimana (-30 wait) to get rid of Flash Skill's wait time and make it a reliable source of damage because it only has 50 delay. There's 2 different ways to approach her. You can use Wings of Icarus so she can Flash Kill/Zantetsuken more often (lower both these moves to 30 delay only!) or give her Vajra (+50% critical) to immensely raise her damage to the point that she can still do 20k-30k damage with Zantetsuken even with half troops. She's best positioned in the middle row instead of front so she doesn't take too much damage. She also has Shadow Stitch, a Throw attribute attack that adds +30 delay. Fairly useful to hit Throw, Gun, Bow, and Cannon units with if you don't want to give them any brave gains.

Siegfried - AKA "The Wall" of Illuminati. Has 15 base Defense! If you place her on the front lines, it gives her 2 more Defense and when you use Balmung, she gets 3 more for a total of 20 Defense! Only critical hits can go through her but if you equip her with Ochain, she will only take 30% damage from those. Combined with Soma, she will be immortal as long as enemies don't poison/venom her. For those tough battles with no turn limit, she will be quite handy in soloing those so you don't have too many casualties. I personally like her design, so that's additional points for being God Tier.

Palamedes - Your source of Venom, Poison and Brave stealing in 1! The only Knights of Round deserving of the God tier rank. With a 4/9/7/2 base stat distribution, she can stay alive quite long and also not worry falling behind in turns like most Art users and their crappy Speed stat. You can keep hitting for attribute weakness and not suffer the consequences all thanks to her very useful hero skill Prywen. Make sure to use it conservatively; it has a very high delay once used but it can drain the enemy's entire brave gauge if it hits all 5 enemies in a cross shape.

Gilgamesh - 9/7/7/3 base stats are just not fair when some characters can barely hit 20 total on their overall stats. Yeah she's that good. Plus she is one of the 3 characters that can carry 4 items at once! You can do many things with this such as the Caduceus + three 2-stat gems or just fill her up with all these Attack+other stat boosting swords. She also possesses different attribute attacks which is a plus because that means she has coverage and an answer to everything. With Sword/Gun/Bow/Melee attacks, she can hit all attributes for extra damage and Nephilim is amazing because it adds +30 delay and only has 80 delay itself. Her only downside is you get her so late in the game, but once you do, clearing Shambala, optional battles, and the final boss is easy as pie.

Cu Chulainn - As an Illuminati, she's the only spear user that can get 100% critical when wielding Gungnir. Also has well distributed base stats at 7/7/7/14! Her Salmon Piercer can hit the back row even if she's placed in the middle row! But she becomes way better when she's in her Beastial form. The reason is her Spear attacks are now replaced with extremely powerful Melee attacks while still remaining as a Spear Unit. She also jumps to 10/7/8/12 base stat distribution! Even if she's now only at 90% critical chance while in Beastial form with Gungnir, her attacks does so much damage that almost nothing survives it when it does critical especially her Ruin Claw that has 3 x 200% (600%!) damage multiplier. She's a great candidate for Vajra (+50% damage) or any status infliction on critical hit items.

Enkidu - Despite being a Melee unit, she is pretty bulky. She has the best defense buff in the game because it guarantees 0 damage for a row of units from any hit once, no matter how strong it is. She has different types of attacks just like Gilgamesh which makes her attribute coverage so good. She also has a powerful War attack that does 260% x2 (520%) damage for only 90 delay and a Cannon attack for 210% damage. Her passive is quite valuable especially if she's in front of a squishy unit who's also one of your primary damage units.

Jiang Ziya - I like her sprite in the game so I'm posting it so you guys can see. She's part of the Illuminati so as you can expect, she has something worth talking about. Being able to use Supercharged (+5 brave orbs!) and summon Hougai allies that can also use Supercharged means you will no longer worry about Brave ever again. The fact that those Hougai allies can also heal fully and give you Agility +3 buff makes them quite unstoppable too as long as you keep them alive. If you just want her to attack, she has High-Speed Chanting which is my preferred Art attack because of its low delay and she also has a powerful Art Attack that does 3 x 110% damage to 3 targets in a column, more than enough to return the Brave she just spent to cast it PLUS more!

Hercules - They made Hercules a lot better in Gold by actually giving her some Defense and Agility and making her actually useful throughout the battle and not just for 1-2 turns. Anything hit by Hercules even with her basic attack will come crying to mommy because of her insane base 15 Attack! I gave her Leaf of Agastya and Laevatein to make her sit at 25 ATK. Because Hero units retain their damage even with reduced HP, the -60% troops from Laevatein doesn't hurt Hercules as much and the fact that even a basic attack can do over 15k damage is good to have especially if there's an annoying front line unit you want to dispose of quickly. Her Head Butt and Gibraltar Crash are capable of doing 30k-50k respectively and if combined with Encourage and/or Expose Weakness, she can do over 100k damage with these attacks!

A Rank - Top Tier - Characters who can hold of well on their own, can become unstoppable with the right items and teammates, or has some utility you cannot get anywhere else!

Minamoto Yoshitsune - 7/6/7/3 stat distribution which is quite above average. Like Achilles, becomes really powerful with Futsuno Mitama because her hero attack Yoshitsune Senbonzakura does 10x hit to a row, which results in up to 30 hits total, enough to fill your entire brave gauge if at least 1 target hit doesn't have a type weakness. What's great about her also is most of her attacks can reach rows that normally Sword users can't get to so distance is her forte.

Musashibou Benkei - One of the 3 characters with 4 item slots. Like Gilgamesh, this allows her to be built in several ways from damage dealing to tanking. Even with that, her base stats aren't too shabby with 6/8/5/1 spread. She has a wide variety of attack coverage with Spear, War, Melee, and Art (actually random) attacks. Her hero attack does 7 hits to a t-shaped area and has property that inflicts random attributes. Even if most of the randomized attacks don't go in your favor, the fact that it deals 7 hits should net you a decent Brave return regardless.

Masamune Date - Unlike most Melee users, Masamune utilizes raw power vs critical chances. She also takes advantages of pull mechanics with Love Bite to draw in mid and back row units to be slaughtered by other Melee units and knock up with Sogerashi Upper for collision damage if they are in the top column. Her hero attack is particularly useful for self preservation because it heals her troops/negative status and hits up to 5 targets!

Montezuma - LOL. I love this girl. :wahaha: She just hands you a ton of brave in exchange for sacrificing herself, and it's only 1 Brave! 7 Brave orbs is quite a lot and if you have one of those +Brave orb when defeated items, she will give you more. The trick to exploit Montezuma's Sacrificial Altar to the fullest is putting Gullinbursti on her so she will act first. You can give her Used Up Kettle so she can survive from this move and use it again later on! Her entire utility is irreplaceable, and that's why she's up here.

Gawain - She looks gorgeous, especially her adult form. In my opinion, she's the best designed character in this game. Note I'm not basing these tiers on character looks, but I thought I needed to get that out of my chest first. Anyway, her rather interesting playstyle comes from being very adaptable. She has an answer in case there's an enemy who will easily wall/defend her attacks. Her Day (adult) form is usually the best to use in most cases due to Gallatin's power and -2 attack debuff but her Night (child) form grants her an amazing Luck boost (1 base luck now becomes 7!) while giving her more speed due to her Valor passive (+2 speed while on the front) and retaining her attack! Furthermore, her Gringolet hero attack on Night form is a 90% x 5 damage multiplier which eventually adds up to 450% damage and has some range.

Alexander - Actually, I take back what I said about Gawain. Alexander easily claims THE BEST designed character in the game. :pyaa: Look at that heterochromia and dazzling half and half outfit and hairstyle. I love the color choices with her outfit and those brassiere and panties are quite daring! Anyways, with a useful passive Royal like Arthur, a healthy 5/7/9/2 stat distribution, and a handy multi-hit hero attack Hetairoi 6 x 50% damage multiplier against all units hit, she's quite a versatile front line Spear unit. She even gets Heavy Spear Rush, an attack that can interrupt even if the attack does not land critical which is always useful!

Atlas - She can't equip items but she really doesn't need it.... She has 12/14/10/1 base stat anyway! To compliment that high defense stat, she also gets Hyper Barrier, reducing all incoming damage against a row of allies by 1000! She also has a very handy hero attack that hits every enemy and adds +30 delay to them. If that's not enough, she also has access to a cannon attack that hits an entire row for 250% damage. Note that her Purge transformation is useless even if it gets a 600% multiplier hero attack because you are reduced to a 2/3/6/1 base stat unit... Considering she's a Hero unit, it's going to be a pain to heal her back if she gets damaged too much because she can't equip any map recovery items.

Faust - This girl's hero skill is more than enough to bump her to the Top tier. Walpurgisnacht is so evil, it inflicts the 3 worst status effects in the game: seal (can't use skills), venom (-25% of current HP per turn), grudge (-5 to all stats) and removes boons! It also has a very small delay of 120. She is extremely useful for all the optional boss fights and makes every one of them effortless to do. Her usefulness in regular battles is also acceptable because Grudge/Curse skills are decent ailments for lowering enemies stats and making battles less dangerous. Also none of her spells have wait time, so you can immediately use and enjoy their effects.

Beethoven - 7/5/8/2 base stat distribution is pretty decent. That high Speed is great especially being the only Art user that has Performance basic attack. It adds +10 delay to every enemy it hits and it will easily affect the first turn of a battle. Anything hit by this at the beginning is pushed at the very bottom of the turn order (because everyone starts with 0 delay) so you can get rid of those pesky speedy enemies first. Her Symphony of Fate is also a delay inflicting skill that does considerable damage in exchange for raising the enemy's attack by 1. Not too bad if that turn delay means you get 2-3 more hits in to finish off the enemy. Very useful utility I would say.

Chihaya - The protagonist's real name. 8/6/7/2 base stats are above average. He is a much better version in Gold with the bad ass red and black color scheme and more versatile skills. His Tsumugari no Tachi hits in a >-shape now vs a full row. There's definitely a lot more applications for this as enemy layouts tend to spread out more. He now also gets a more reliable hero attack that packs some serious power and range. Last but not the least, the major upgrade for him in Gold is that Summon Hero only costs 7 Brave now vs 10 in the original version! This allows him to put any one of your unused allies from your entire roster onto the field without putting you on a very vulnerable situation.

Lu Bu - Lu Bu got a major buff in Eiyuu Senki Gold for having Tremendous Lance. This attack can instant kill non-boss flagged enemies. With an 8/7/4/5 base stat spread with a passive that gives her +2 Speed while on the front line, she can take some punishment, inflict some major pain, and keep up in the turn order. She still has the Unparalleled Spear hero attack that boasts a 400% damage multiplier and reduces Agility by 1.

Nero - Because Nero is one conceited bitch, let's give her a bigger picture so she can grace us with her so called "magnificence". She is much more offensive oriented in Gold having access to Sparkling Magic which has 40% critical, Tincle Magic that does 3x hits against up to 4 targets and her voice (her hero skill) is so horrendous it inflicts venom and reduces Defense by 1. With an 8/3/7/6 spread, her stats convinces her to running a critical/speed build. All her spells have 0 wait, so you can bombard the enemy with them immediately. Overall, she's easily the best or 2nd best offense-oriented Art unit due to her amazing brave building attacks.

Aristotle - Not sure what Tenco was thinking by making her a Bow unit. Even so, with a 5/9/5/3 base stat distribution, they made it so that she can hold out on her own even as a Bow user. She feels like an Art unit with all her useful buffs and debuffs but having no attacks besides her basic Normal Shot. Expose Weakness is a 2-in-1 debuff that adds delay and inflicts vulnerability (take double damage on next hit). Her Organon hero skill is the best buff in the game because it removes those nasty negative status effects and doubles the damage for all allies in a row!

Alwilda - A War unit that can pull enemies towards her with Octopus Clutch attack? Very useful to be placed on Top tier. War units have issues with range, but that's easily disregarded with her. She has perfect use of Sharul which allows her to interrupt anyone even if the attack doesn't critical, perfect for her Octopus Clutch attack that can reach even the back row units! She also has a high Attack stat so anything she attacks will be in a world of hurt. Also one of the best War type attacks, her hero attack Manannan Mac Lir that has a huge AoE. Her Ringleader passive gives everyone including enemies +1 Attack so use speedy party members if you don't want to take too much damage.

Sasaki Kojirou - A well balanced Sword unit with 8/4/8/1 stats and has a passive that adds +2 Defense. Not as good as Ishigawa Goemon, but can put some serious hurt with her collision damage moves. Her Serene Mind can put her at a huge advantage with +2 to all stats and it has no delay! Her hero attack Tsubame Gaeshi has 2 instances to critical at 50% and has 210% power for each hit. If that's not enough, hitting a bottom column unit will suffer major collision damage because of its double knock down effect!

Napoleon - The biggest problem with cannon users is they have issues with enemy front row units. Perry's attacks are stronger than Napoleon's, however, what makes Napoleon better than her is she doesn't have friendly fire. Last thing you want to do with Perry is friendly fire someone with Susquehanna Strike because it will usually kill them with that 440% damage multiplier... Napoleon's hero attack is possibly the best one out of all the cannon users because it hits an entire column as well as an entire row of your choice due to its huge cross-shaped targeting radius and also has a decent 30% critical chance! She also has Encourage which gives her or allies double damage, so if by any chance she can't hit something, she can provide a useful buff for someone. She's the last non-hero character you get in the game though so it can be quite hard to appreciate her greatness.

Jeanne d'Arc - Her 6/5/6/8 base stat may look unimpressive but that's the reason why she's good. That high luck stat allows her to get 100% critical chance with Sarnga, Ame no Kagoyumi, and Artemis Bow plus her Penetrating Arrow and La Pucelle Act give 30% and 40% critical respectively. You can use status inflicting on critical items like Kibisis' Satchel or Yasakani no Magatama as well. Being a bow user is a plus because by placing her in the middle row, she can hit everything on the field and be a nasty interrupter for those enemies relying on high damaging moves with wait time. She also has Quick Time buff if needed to give those in her row or in front reduced delay so they can act faster. With her passive giving +2 attack to anyone behind her, she's great to pair up with a cannon user like Napoleon or Kay.

Cook - The gun version of Jeanne d'Arc. 4/7/6/8 base stat and her 2 skills having nice critical chances are screaming at me "Hey, I'm a critical attacker", so that's exactly how she should be used. She can't target as many units at once like Jeanne d'Arc but she hurts like a truck if her Golden Astrolabe nails a critical because it has the same damage multiplier as Zantetsuken: 500% damage! Critical users are just so useful in Eiyuu Senki Gold because they can generate a lot of brave and can get out of control with status infliction and critical damage % items.

Marco Polo - This kuudere is just cold and merciless in battle as she is in the story. She is your best friend in Nightmare and Very Hard Mode because her hero attack Il Millione will generate you lots of money. 9,999'ing all your units in that mode will be a piece of cake. I managed to max out all my troops to 9,999 in less than 150 turns all thanks to her. Her other attacks, Deadly Sting hurts quite a lot and has a 50% critical chance which will be more than enough to 100% with a single Luck item and her Poison Sting can poison so, you can sit back and watch any survivors wither away. She's great to partner up with critical based characters because of her Secrecy (Ally behind +4 Luck) passive.

Billy the Kid - Finally a pistol user! Billy is a fast critical based hitter that packs a punch with 7/4/8/5 base stats. Having access to Quick Draw which allows her to shoot the enemy quickly, deal defense ignoring damage with a high 50% critical rate attack Bandits, and barrage something with Shotgun Shell for massive Brave gains. She has it all, well... almost.

Lancelot - Lancelot is quite strong in this game. They made her Aroundight hero skill an attack now instead of a Defense buff. It is quite powerful at 190% x 3 damage multiplier (570% total!) but only hits the enemy 1-2 squares in front of her. Ogre Slash is also fairly cheap 290% damage for only 100 delay! 8/5/7/2 base stats are above average for a Sword unit and she has a way to raise her defense with Spirit's Protection buff that grants an entire row of allies with +2 Defense.

Huayna Capac - This boomerang-using loli has a nasty brave absorbing skill just like Palamedes. It has 50% less delay but costs 1 more brave and has an X-shaped targeting, which has far less applications than Prywen. She has a very useful +2 Attack buff that affects an entire row of allies. Her Eagle Edge can hit up to 4 enemies at once for only 100 delay. She is best placed in the middle row in the middle to give her allies +1 Agility with her passive and have the reach to hit effectively with Eagle Edge and her basic.

B Tier - High Tier - Characters that are still worthy to include in most parties. They may have a utility that can be topped by someone else, but they are still better than most characters nonetheless.

Yamato Takeru - Eh? What happened? Yamato Takeru is only high tier? She was clearly God tier material back in the original Eiyuu Senki. Well... the main reason is she can only equip 1 item in Gold. Her base stats may be an impressive 10/10/8/1 but just having 1 equipment slot severely limits what she can do. She's not like Atlas where she can tank some hits. Also another issue with her is her passive. It absolutely has no benefit by itself but if there's nobody behind her, she suffers -1 to all stats which is huge! She has a powerful sword attack Blazing Thunder with has 270% damage but the delay is absurd at 190. It's almost pointless to use it unless you can manage to use her other skill Ootari Stance which allows her to act 3 times in a row, ignoring delays of each move. Problem is that move has 100 Wait which is pointless to use if you don't have Treasure Chest item on her. Her TRUE (that's right, she's the original!) Tsumugari no Tachi has no addiitional effects but it guarantees everyone on a row will be hit with 350% damage multiplier.

Rasputin - This extreme masochist of an Art unit is not afraid being in the front lines due to her +2 Defense while in the front row passive. This puts her at 11 Defense even without Defense gears! Her Mysticalion heals her row for 330% her Quick Heal amount and gives herself and her allies +1 Defense. She has no problems staying alive even as an Art unit because her Ultra Regeneration has the ability to heal herself fully. Her cheap 2 brave Yusupov Claw can hit a full column of enemies for a multi hit Melee damage; great for Brave gains!

Magoroku Kanemoto - Like Sun Tzu, her usefulness comes from granting allies additional brave gains but hers comes in a form of a row buff called Brave Up with a significant 200 delay. It's cheap 2 brave cost though, so it's still something and it stacks on top of Rosetta Stone and Sun Tzu's buff to give up to 100-150% brave gain. She will most likely only use this move only twice or so before the battle finally ends if you don't let the battle drag too long. For her stat worth, it's 6/6/8/1. Very decent Speed to combat Brave Up's delay. She also has Supercharged like Jiang Ziya if needed but Brave Up is just better most of the time.

Kamehameha - Bet you a billion dollars you just thought of Dragon Ball Z after hearing her name. :makina: With 5/6/7/7 base stat and a cheap 2 brave attack with 50% critical, 100 delay and 150% power, she is built as a speedy critical Spear unit. Her Strength buff isn't as good as Huayna Capac's because it's only +1 Attack but it targets 2 more allies if you positioned your party in a cross-shaped. Her hero attack hits every enemy for 250% cannon based damage and lowers their attack. It has an insane 60 wait though, so -wait items are highly recommended.

Teach - Not as good as Billy but has coverage with her different attribute attacks (Gun, Melee, Cannon). When she becomes human, she gains access to a handy pistol attack with a built-in seal effect, allowing you to shut down enemies with a pesky attack or debuff. Her hero attack is particularly useful because it only has 100 delay and being a cannon type, it's a good alternative to use against Melee, Sword, or War units so you don't give your enemy any brave. It knocks down if she's in cat form and knocks up if she's in human, so you can abuse collision damage this way.

Columbus - The most bad ass looking female in Eiyuu Senki and donning an all black dress as if she just came from a funeral, her Anti Material Rifle attack is enough to silence most enemies and send them to THEIR funeral. 2 Brave for 250% damage and being a Gun unit who can effectively take down most types is a boon on the battlefield. Her Egg Barret hero attack is a cannon type as well as her Grenade Shot and both have some AoE. The only thing that's pulling her down from being a Top tier is her very low Speed.

Mordred - 8/6/6/2 is a good spread for a spear user such as herself. All her attacks besides her basic are 3x multi hit which allows her to generate tons of brave. Partnered with Sun Tzu and equipped with Rosetta Stone, you will be sitting at max brave gauge all the time. She's easily one of the top 4 best Spear units because of this. Her multi-hit hero attack Clarente has an increased critical chance to further boost brave gains if it criticals to the point that hitting just 1 enemy without hitting a weakness is enough to refill the entire brave gauge.

Ywain - "Kick Ass" as Ywain would say. She is a foul-mouthed loli who happens to be my favorite character in the game. Ywain has a few changes in Gold. She loses her Melee Disarrayed Scratch attack in exchange for Edge Grind, an 80% x 3 Throw attack that hits 1 target in front of her and her Bronllafyn got nerfed by adding a 50 wait on it but it now does 2 hits on every enemy hit instead! Buron Ravine is the fastest Throw attack in the game at 50 delay, so equipping her with Sampo or Treasure Chest for that annoying wait time is worth it!

Percival - DAT ASS THO! Bunny girl is meant to be on middle row, no ifs and buts about it. That Assist passive is way too awesome, giving the unit right in front of her +2 attack! She retains her Dancing Edge and Sequence hero attack (now with upgraded +30% critical) and has been given Vorpal Edge, a 280% multiplier attack that has 80% critical!!! Funny that despite all these attacks with critical chances, her base stats are at 7/6/8/1... so you will need to invest on some Luck gear if you want to make good use of her attacks.

Arthur - The true main heroine of the original Eiyuu Senki (in my opinion). She still keeps her impressive 8/7/7/1 base stats and her long ranged Magic Sword Affection sword attack and Excalibur with a 340% multiplier upgrade and -1 to all stats to every enemy that gets hit. Instead of a heal skill, she has a +1 to all stat buff with very low delay and also a neat Sword Attack called Cursed Sword that doesn't allow you or the enemy to get any brave gains. Very useful when hitting something that is weak to Sword! Her passive is now Royal which grants anyone behind her +1 attack!

Ivan Groznyi - Ivan the Terrible is your go-to character if you like to paralyze (+20 delay on the next move) your enemies because 3 out of the 4 skills she has inflicts this ailment. With a healthy 5/7/9/1 base stat, she can act quite often despite her moves having some large delays. Her basic attack is a long 150 delay Magic Sword attack that can paralyze and her hero attack Groza is a multi-hitting Spear attribute attack that also paralyzes. Piercing Magic Sword can hit an entire column for only 2 brave. Her passive Terror inflicts -1 Defense to an entire row of enemies as long as she's in the front row which is always a plus.

Galahad - One of Arthur's right hand knights, she specializes in Defense with 7/8/6/1 base stats. Her Ice Barrier skill is not as good as Atlas' because it's only a 1 time 1,000 damage reduction. Her hero attack Ice Sword is very valuable though because it reduces Defense by 2 and that's always a good thing if you want battles to end quicker. She also has a cheap War attack Shield Bash that has knock back and adds 20 delay to the enemy it hits.

Qin Shi Huang - Bulky and speedy Sword unit with 4/8/7/3 base stats who can poison up to 3 enemies at once and debuff agility by 1 with one of her Brave attacks. However, her usefulness comes from her amazing hero skill that summons a 10,000 HP unit with 5/8/5/2 base stats and several sword attacks: Sonic Boom, Buster Attack and Slash Zapper. The fact that it's 2 Brave cheaper than Chihaya's Summon Hero and has the same delay makes it "good enough".

Hammourabi - Eye to Eye is the strongest Art Attack in the game when Hammourabi is sitting at 1 HP: It gets a 990% damage multiplier!!! This is possible all thanks to Used Up Kettle. With Brisingamen and Book of the Dead, you can do unreal damages with this attack against up to 5 unfortunate enemies. Now, the problem is her wait time. Because Eye to Eye has an annoying 50 wait as well as her 2nd strongest Art which is Grand Cross, with Used Up Kettle, you might need to sacrifice one of the damage boosting items mentioned above to give way for Sampo (-50 Wait) or Treasure Chest (1 time, 0 wait) if you prefer to instant cast this spell. Also Hammourabi has a 9/6/4/2 base stat spread, so she can't really use her attacks often with that piss poor Speed stat, so you better make each one count.

Geronimo - I love that 2nd form of hers. Too bad she's just way too glass-cannon'ish. With an 8/2/8/3 base on normal form and 10/1/10/2 on Eagle Paint form, her perk is outspeeding the enemy and hitting them hard. She gains access to Berserk which is an all-or-nothing skill that doubles her damage in exchange for taking double damage. Being on the front row gives her +4 Luck or 20% more critical, so you can actually give her some Luck gear. Her Eagle Paint form gives her a 550% multiplier hero attack that hits the target in front of her. I personally prefer her normal form's Hero attack Wild War Cry because it does 360% damage against 3 targets and she has a Tomahawk Throw attack that allows her to hit from a distance with Throw attribute damage.

Oda Nobunaga - The problem with most gun users is they are forced to be placed in the front row if you want to utilize their passive skills. Oda is no different except she will suffer from it if she gets hit due to her crappy 4 Defense... Also her Triple Shot and Beelzebub have an unreal 50 wait time, hence it forces you to equip her with Sampo or Treasure Chest if you want to utilize those attacks without getting interrupted.

Kay - I was wondering if there are more of these Knights of the Round in this tier. Also, I'm posting her sprite just so you guys can see how absurd her weapon is. Kay is O'Kay if you can spare your Wait reduction items on her. With Supercharge (double the damage of next attack) having 0 delay, using it guarantees that when its long 60 wait time is over, she will be able to use an attack right after, which will hit for a lot of damage. Use Atomic Ray instead of her basic attack if you want to see her power.

Tutankhamun - Unfortunately she starts off every battle not as this beautiful Egyptian girl you see over at the left but the ugly gold sarcophagus on the right.... with 3/9/5/4 crappy base stats. Unfortunately, there's no event to make her get out of that state, so you will have to waste 2 Brave to "unseal" her to her more useful version. However, this Egyptian bare beauty packs an amazing 7/7/8/2 base stat with a useful Sanctuary AoE heal skill, High-speed Chanting basic attack (awesome!), Ammon Flare that inflicts Paralysis and her hero attack Pharaoh's Curse that inflicts.....you guessed it! Curse!

Kublai Khan - With a fairly nice +2 Defense passive to anyone in front of her, 2 of her brave attacks only costs 2 brave, and well distributed stats at 7/5/8/3, she has the makings of a great Bow unit. Rukh Wing is only a 120 delay Bow attack that hits up to 5 units in a cross-shaped range. Her Area Shot hits up to 3 targets at once which rebates the 2 brave she just spent on it plus more. Even though none of her attacks have critical chances, the fact that she can hit many units at once like Jeanne d'Arc is more than enough to sneak her into High tier.

Xuanzang - A War unit with strong moves having no wait time? Awesome! Her Low Hit has 210% power and can knock down for collision damage. Head Butt is slightly stronger at 290% power and adds +30 delay. She also has a very useful hero skill that inflicts seal on every enemy surrounding the primary target, which means she's best position in the front row in the middle to seal the most enemies possible. Now if only she had more than 5 base speed, she would be on Top tier.

Bedivere - "Rocket Punch" girl of the Knights of Round may be small but she can take out back row threats in a single attack, something that most Melee units can't do! 9/6/4/4 may look unimpressive at first but she makes great use of that high attack stat with her power no-wait time Hammer Hook and Screw Blow attacks and Carnwenhan has amazing range, a very low 80 delay, and hits the target like a truck for a massive 500% multiplier. It also knocks back for collision damage if you decide to hit those enemy back row units. Her Fighting Spirit passive gives allies beside her +1 Defense which makes her ideal to pair up with 2 tanky characters. Overall, a strong Melee character who doesn't need critical chances to deal damage.

Charlemagne - The other character besides Balin that has access to Eruptive Saber and she's not a Sword user! Unlike Balin, Charlemagne has Melee attacks and both of them are fairly useful. Venom Claw applies Venom which is an amazing ailment that puts a timer on your enemy and sucks in 25% of their HP per turn and Heat Scratch, a cheap 2 brave attack with low delay and does 2 hits. Her most useful attack however comes from Chrismation, because it absorbs Brave and also applies +30 delay! This sort of 2-in-1 utility is very rare to find and hence she can easily be fitted to most teams.

C Tier - Mid Tier - Average characters whose existence can be replaced by someone else. They aren't the worst of the worst, so if you like some characters here, go ahead and use them.

Cleopatra - 6/4/7/8 base stats is too obvious; she's a critical oriented character. Unfortunately none of her skills add any critical chances, so you will have to rely on Luck gears for that. 2 of her attacks including her Hero attack inflict poison and also a +30 delay. Her passive grants +2 luck to allies on her side, so she's great to partner up with critical based characters.

Cambyses - Cat girl pharaoh is sitting at 3/6/8/7 base stats. With that unnecessary high Luck, the rest of her stats suffers. She doesn't have any useful attacks but her Neko Barrier is very useful for making your main damage dealer/s "hidden" for a while against enemy attacks by lowering their volatile hate to 0% (volatile hate is built up by producing damage, making enemies target characters inflicting the most damage more often). She also has a cheap 1 brave attack Neko Punch that can interrupt even if it doesn't critical. Her hero attack Large Neko March only has 80 delay and is Art attribute; solid for brave gains!

Ashoka - Posting her censored version because normally, she is naked with her nipples exposed! 8/5/6/3 is below average by my standards if you are comparing Throw units who are either very bulky or very speedy. She is a good source for spreading Curse ailment on enemies though so she is still somewhat useful. She has a transformation mode that makes her a lot more glass-cannon, but it comes with an awesome Defense debuff skill and a different targeting Ashoka Pillar for those enemies that you normally can't hit with her other version's. Both hero attacks still hurt like a truck at 400% damage. Only thing I don't like with Evil Ashoka is her passive becomes Discernment, which is a -1 All on the enemy in front of her but requires her to be in the front line.

Hannibal - Hannibal used to be a Sword unit back in the original Eiyuu Senki but I like this change, although, I'm not a fan of characters who have a single attribute across all their attacks. Lacking coverage is a disadvantage especially if you're a War unit. Such is the build for Hannibal. 2 of the moves, her Giant Stomp and War Elephant Rush also have wait times. At least the latter only has 100 delay which is perfect to use over and over again once you have a nice brave gauge built up and can get rid of that annoying 50 wait time.

Vlad - Dracula suffers from "weak moves" syndrome. Other than her move named after herself, her other 2 attacks are garbage. Skewer only does 70% damage and Poison Sting is a Melee attack but not really meant for damaging. Kind of a waste when she's sitting at 8/5/6/4 base stat with that high Attack. Her only redeeming quality is her passive which is a -4 Luck effect on enemy in front of her when she's in the front row and the coolest looking hero attack in the game, Dracula that has serious 350% power, hits up to 5 enemies, and inflicts curse.

Drake - 8/6/6/3 base stats, not bad at all! Whether she's placed in the middle row or front row, her hero attack El Drako will hit a lot of targets, up to 6 for 300% damage! She also has a cheap source of +50 delay debuff Maelstrom. With her having a lot attack already, it's safe to invest in this stat to make El Drako hurt a lot more. Other that that, there's not much to say. She's just slightly above average.

Tristan - Tristan is the most average Bow unit you will ever find. Being the only unit with 0 base Luck, her usefulness comes from her other stats at 8/6/7 although having no Luck at all goes against what being a great Bow unit is... Her only brave Bow attack (Pinpoint Shot) is great if you can find an enemy standing on the middle of the enemy's side of the field but most of the time, it's situational.  She has Spear coverage on hero skill which lowers Luck by 2 in a straight line.

Bors - Bors is like a paladin of the Knights of Round. With 6/8/6/2 base stat, she is pretty bulky for a War unit. She doesn't have any other attacks besides her basic attack and her Courechouse hero attack which is extremely weak at 260% damage multiplier only. She does have Healing Aura which is a much stronger heal skill than Himiko's Healing and also Expose Weakness like Aristotle which inflicts vulnerability. She's the only War unit that almost plays like a support character, which isn't bad, but just not effective in most cases. At least her passive is useful because it gives +2 attack to the person behind her.

Hazakura Seiso - Majikoi's Seiso in Haou/Lu Bu mode... nice! She has a really powerful hero attack Batsuzan Gaisei that can hit every enemy and add +30 delay on them if she's in the middle of the middle row but it has a 50 wait. Thrusting Tornado is faster and cheaper if you are just aiming to take down for 1-2 enemies. Her an amazing Military passive that grants all front liners +1 Attack! Now why is she on this tier? She can only carry 1 item like Takeru but her 8/7/7/1 stat distribution is just hard to work on with that huge limitation.

Miyamoto Musashi - 6/9/5/1 base stats are nice. A tanky version of Kojirou but that low Speed is just disappointing. Gets a +2 Attack while in front passive. Her hero attack Heaven Beheading has a weird alternating range pattern and it's hard to consistently hit enemies with it, but it does inflict Curse and Paralysis and does 2 hits; fairly useful for brave gains. Her other skills include Rumors which also has a rather silly range but can hit 3 enemies at once for +50 delay and Two Step Cut, a double-hit attack for a small 90 delay.  Heaven Beheading just having obnoxious targeting zones that don't give you much freedom to target stuff you want and her very low speed is what puts her in this tier.

Balin - Being able to hit 3 things at once with Eruptive Saber is quite awesome especially when Sun Tzu is present. With 9/4/7/2 base stats, she looks solid for a Sword unit except there are several problems problem. She doesn't have Sword attribute attacks plus her attacks have some huge delay values. Her Eruptive Saber may be free but 130 delay for a basic attack is just way too high. Don't even bother with Dolorous Stroke because that one's 200 delay. Her hero attack Cenferchyn is extremely weak with only 210% power and has friendly fire! The friendly fire may work in your favor if it hits an ally not weak to Cannon damage, but it will still hurt due to Balin's very high attack. And if you decide to use Berserk before that, allies hit with this move will most likely die.

William Kidd - I thought Monkey D Luffy is the next pirate king? Apparently, William Kidd is in this game. Her passive is fairly useful against front row tanks giving the person in front of her +2 Defense. Her attacks have fairly low delay, with her Agility buff and her hero attack Treasure Island sitting at only 80 delay. Treasure Island fills brave gauge quite fast and being a Melee attack, it's good to hit Sword enemy units with. Her stat distribution 6/5/8/4 base is good to compliment her low delay making her a fairly decent brave generator. My only major gripe with her is she doesn't produce enough damage.

Caesar - A full support Spear Unit. Other than her basic, the rest of her skills are support moves. Military Buildup allows any row to become stronger offensively and defensively with +1 Attack/Defense. Quick Charge is quite lackluster when Jiang Ziya and Kanemoto have Supercharged which grants +50 brave. Her hero skill Aria is an all-or-nothing random buff or debuff on everyone. I've seen it inflict -5 All which is good if it lands on the enemy but terrible if it affects an ally. I avoid using it because I don't like relying on too much Luck in a strategy game like this. The only thing that's preventing her from descending to Low tier is her solid base stats sitting at 5/8/7/2 and very useful Virtue passive that lowers all enemies's attack when she's in the front row by 1.

Perry - I love her decent 8/3/7/4 base stats and epic Engrish way of talking but I'm not a fan of her overall because of the friendly fire. Susquehanna Strike will most likely kill any ally hit by it because of that insane 440% power. It has a weird downward right diagonal targeting range too in which you will be lucky to even hit more than 1 unit with it. Her only useful attack is Napalm Cannon but only if you can dispose of its ugly 50 wait. At least she doesn't have issues targeting enemies on the field like Napoleon.

D Tier - Low Tier - Characters that are just weak and feel disadvantageous when used on the field. They are lacking several combat effective elements to make them useful in the long run and the brutal nature of Very Hard/Nightmare mode will constantly pressure them. They can't function well by themselves.

Inou Tadataka - Turn delay is great if you have several other characters (at least 4 of them) doing it. But if you are only getting it from a single character like Inou Tadataka who may have the speed to pull it off but lacks the killing speed then it's futile. Also, you probably don't want to keep the battle dragging too long especially on Very Hard/Nightmare mode because taking too many turns affects your battle grade. Earth Movement is great for moving around but the fact that it only works on Tadataka is a little disappointing. It would have been useful if you could target allies especially Gun units with it and reposition them. Her hero attack may have an awesome +80 delay and -1 to all stats effect, it's a 250 delay move that only affects 1 enemy.

Abe no Seimei - An Art user that's very offensively built. I can see where her power is coming from... *looks at those massive breasts* With an 8/7/5/2 base stat distribution, she can put a nice "dent" anything she hits but there are some issues. She has a 150 delay basic attack. Even with 130% multiplier, Art attacks have no type advantages and are not meant for damaging. Unless your name is Hammourabi who can get an insane 990% attack, Art users are not meant for killing enemies but building brave. Her other attacks have 210% and 300% multiplier respectively. And that's another issue with Seimei: Even if her attacks have some high damage multipliers, her attacks are all single hit. Factor in her low speed and wait time on a couple of her spells including her 50 wait Ghost Parade, she really doesn't do as much in helping others.

Copernicus - I like those planet earrings. Where can I buy them, Copernicus? That's really all I can find to praise her. She's a full support Art unit and that's a problem in my books. Having no cheap source of attacks including a basic attack, she is forced to use her support skills with high delay: Quick Heal with 130 delay, Quick Time with 180 delay and Divine Protection with 180 delay! Her only attack is her hero attack Heavenly Sphere. It packs a 420% power with seal effect but only targets 1 enemy. Not that great outside of optional boss fights and the fact that's it's 5 brave is a downer. I'd rather spend that on something even more useful like Faust's Walpurgisnacht.

Himiko - The self proclaimed "true heroine" of the original Eiyuu Senki, she's the first healer unit you get in both games. You see the trend here? Outside of Rasputin and Tutankhamun who can still function outside of their healer roles, Healing Art units are just bad in general. I can slightly put her above Copernicus if I had to reevaluate their Very Hard/Nightmare mode performance but the fact that her best heals pack 180 and 250 delay respectively (absurd!) and having the crappiest basic attack for an Art user (the 130%/150 delay one), it still won't be enough to put her higher than Low tier...

Nostradamus - This rather charming loli who writes doujins for a living has an awesome debuff that lowers a row of enemies' attack and defense by 1 and also has Maelstrom like Drake. She's perfect for turn-delay team but like the reason I provided with Inou Tadataka, dragging a battle far too long is bad in this game especially in higher difficulties. Her Book of the Future hero skill puts everyone on top of the turn order which may sound awesome but it's just way too situational in most cases and has 320 delay.... which means she will most likely not see herself getting a turn for the rest of the battle.

Merlin - This fuzzy furball has no attacks and has 0/8/8/1 base stats! It's pointless to put anything else on her other than maybe +Agility gems and immunity items. Only thing that's great about Merlin is she has the 2nd best passive skill because it gives everyone in front of her (up to 2 rows!) +1 Defense and her hero skill is only a 4 brave skill that gives double turns for any ally, All+3 and halves damage for 1 turn. She has Yell that gives All+1 for someone in 1 turn, but it's just rather inefficient because non-attacks don't give any brave at all and All+1 that only lasts for a turn is hard to make use of. She has a reposition skill that helps rifle and beam cannon users hit specific enemies. That's good and all but just lacking any ways to attack doesn't help the party when the mid-late game is about brave control and acquisition!

Magellan - My least favorite cannon user. Has no way of hitting front row units besides anyone directly in front of her outside of her Magellan Nebula with absurd 50 wait and Global Ball that has a silly 15 wait time and a Throw attribute, which means giving unnecessary brave when hitting Melee and War units because it does 3 hits! Her stats are kinda pointless with 6/8/5/2 because cannon users don't need that much Defense because they are meant for the back row and only ones that can reach them are front row Spear units, Rifle units, Art units that are in front/mid row and other Cannon users. The only thing that's great about her is her hero attack which packs some massive 420% multiplier, more than enough to kill most Art/Spear/Throw units.

Archimedes - A girl wearing only a bathtowel with 5/8/6/3 base stat is not helping her case. She has a terrible Forecast passive that forces her to be in the front line if you want to utilize its effect. She may have different attribute attacks (Bow, Throw, War) but it doesn't help that her hero attack has 30 wait and odd cross shaped targeting (which means she can't hit some targets that normally Bow units have no issues hitting) and her Throw attack Trebuched has 40 wait and 180 delay.

Galileo - What the heck is up with these characters meant to be on the backrow having a terrible passive like Forecast!? Galileo is the same case as Archimedes except she's worse. Being a Beam Cannon unit with 6/8/6/2 base stats puts her on a significant disadvantage of not being able to get enough turns. Unlike Kay, she has no way of effectively hitting enemies outside of her column. Her Flash Bang has a pathetic 40% power that can hit up to 3 enemies for +30 delay but it has 150 delay itself! Her Agility debuff has an unnecessary 15 wait and her Epsilon Move is the only worthwhile thing going for her because it can grant up to 2 units double action buff, but it's targeting range forces her to be in the back to utilize it, which means her passive Forecast is now useless if you do that.

Diogenes - 4/7/9/1 stat distribution looks decent but there's a problem. Her passive is a double-edged sword. Losing -2 Luck for +2 attack when you have someone like Percival who has Assist passive without that Luck penalty is not worth it. Her attacks are a mixed bag also. Her Catapult Swing hurts for a lot but it has 50 wait, so you may need to put Sampo or Treasure Chest on her for that. Plus her Attack stat is so low that in the end, it's probably not worth it. Her Cynosarges has an alternating targeting pattern like Musashi's Heaven Beheading and Tutankhamun's Pharaoh's Curse except it doesn't do anything else but knock the enemy up for collision damage.

Marie Antoinette - Now, why would this precious ojou-sama be in this tier even when she can hold 4 items? Her 4/6/5/9 base stats are just so poor that even putting the best items on her won't make her good. Her best attack Guillotine Cut may have 310% damage and 30% critical but has a silly 40 wait and her buff skill grants Luck +2 but only for her and surrounding allies. She does have Brioche though and it applies Berserk on 3 enemies (same Berserk effect as Geronimo).

  12.             Ladies and gentlemen whose first experience with a visual novel was Katawa Shoujo, please raise your right hands. Very good. Very good, ladies and gentlemen. Now, those of you who have never played it, please raise your left hand. No, m'Lady, watching a Let's Play can't possibly count as a playthrough. I beg your pardon? Why, yes, it's completely different.  But this is for another time, is it not? Well, then. To those who failed to raise either hand when prompted, be it because you were already a seasoned visual novel player when it was released or you just happened to come across it when you were just starting out, I apologize. I'm afraid this won't be a very interesting read to you. It wouldn't be for me.

I say so as I belong to the last group I mentioned. I'll keep both my hands in my pocket, thanks. To be honest, I don't really share the nostalgia of those who spent hours reading an Emotional Narrative Clickable Slideshow (this is what "visual novel" means in Japanese) for the first time with Katawa Shoujo, nor do I share the perplex skepticism of those who have watched the hurricane of hype from a safe distance. Unfortunately for you who are reading right now, no distance is safe enough.

I hope that, by the end of this humble piece, you are all able to mutter "so this is what Katawa Shoujo is all about!", yes, even you who raised the right hand. Especially you. Because you see, it has been four years since the most popular non-Japanese visual novel was launched. Your views on it may have changed now, but can you reflect on what about the game roped you in? It could have been both your first and your last visual novel, but it wasn't. What, then, can you tell to your fellow readers who have yet to play Katawa Shoujo?

Let's start with where most of the stories take place. We have probably all been to Yamaku High. It's Oblivious Garden's homonymous setting. it's Everlasting Summer's Sovyonok, as well as Ever17's LeMU. These aren't worlds or cities - rather, these are smaller places you end up knowing all too well, places you could get tired of. What is special in such settings is that they are a monument to the character - it represents a fundamental flaw or condition of the protagonist, one he cannot fight against and, because of that, will always mirror the way he deals with said flaw or condition. After all, he's there because of that condition, in one way or another. So it's one giant mirror for a character's development, a characteristic that enhances storytelling by keeping one element intact but changing everything else. Yamaku tells a story not through flow, but through contrast. Now, there is a very particular institution in real life that has this effect on us, that has us looking directly at the changes in us when we look at the changes in the place or how we deal with the surroundings.

Home is a place you know all too well. It's a place you could get tired of and that always embodies a certain aspect in you - childhood, a particular struggle, a series of fortunate events. Thus, this type of setting is capable of emulating both stability - inexorability even - and change and this is why it's so powerful. It's both a hurricane and a mountain and, as such, it's capable of condensing a multitude of feelings that the story can extract and use for its own benefit.

Consider here that Yamaku encompasses its student body, too. Sorry, sir? Oh, how could I forget? I'm not usually this careless... probably. I'm verry sorry. I'll explain what Yamaku is. It's a school for students with special needs, ranging from the hearing-impaired to amputees to those with a chronic and dangerous diseases, the latter being Hisao's case.

You could expect transferring into a new school to be difficult, but transferring into a school like this is even more difficult - and not comfortable, as not any disability you may have keeps you from connecting with the fictional world - and so doesn't Hisao's. But more on that later. Case in point, you are an outsider and have no idea how to deal with your new current life. Now this is, of course, a pretty relatable and common situation. However, Katawa Shoujo very cleverly turns that which is internal to external, plain to see difficulties. It is hard to communicate with and reach common grounds with a figure of authority you barely know. Shizune, as president of the student council, is no different. However, because she's deaf, even those who normally have no difficulty in dealing with this kind of thing are forced to concede and are caught wondering whether it's right to look at her while she's talking or to look at the interpreter, Misha.

Likewise, it's hard enough to approach a shy person and make friends with them. But even if you think you're good at this, at "getting people out of their shell" (could you be any sillier?), Hanako is a challenge. Her shyness is made visible and physical by her burn scars. I don't mean to say the girls' disabilities are metaphors. They are what they are, but they have a very practical effect of forcefully reducing most players to Hisao, beating their feet to fit in his shoes. It's very hard for someone to think ahead of Hisao in his situation, because he struggles as much as the player to behave normally in front of all the people he wants to talk to, but doesn't know how.

Therefore, a certain magic occurs: daily life becomes a challenge. A simple shared meal is a novelty and a puzzle; ordering in the cafeteria is as complicated at first as choosing from a French menu (given you aren't French, I suppose); the most trivial smalltalk can become a sequence of faux pas. However, it's unavoidable - it's daily life, after all. The sun will rise every day (or as Super Mega Comics so brilliantly put, there is one day every day), you want it or not. As we wanted to demonstrate, a hurricane and a mountain, all at once. And since we're at it, I'd like to think we all took school life pretty seriously when we were there. The person we admired but who didn't think much of us was a big deal; being too ashamed to talk to a classmate for the first time even if it's been three years since you started studying in the same class was a thing; wanting to bury your head in the sand for the slightest mistake was normal.

Katawa Shoujo emulates the seriousness of daily life artificially, by giving you small, but quite difficult problems, one at a time. In this scenario, slice of life narrative gains value, gains stakes. Thus, in the player's head, few moments are useless - they all become a part of learning how to live as Hisao.

This is how the game drags you in its universe, which is mostly self-sufficient, since it's you who makes of it what you will. Hisao's disability, a heart condition that nearly killed him and had him imprisoned in a hospital for four months, was carefully chosen - it doesn't impede Hisao from doing mostly anything, but it's perfectly possible to relate, because it entails feeling like you don't know what's going on within yourself - a feeling we all know, have felt at some point and which scared the hell away of us even if it wasn't life-threatening at all.

But it isn't easy to make a fictional setting feel like home, even if it works in the narrative. The allure is not in the mechanism itself but in how you experience it. Therefore, the feeling of familiarity with the setting, and by corollary with the visual novel as a whole, is built through small repetitions here and there in different contexts. By doing this, each and every aspect of life in Yamaku becomes unique, but paramount. You could say these are the smaller reflections that make up the "hurricane, but mountain" approach.

Now, Katawa Shoujo's soundtrack gained a lot of praise and I will be the first to declare myself a fan of NicolArmarfi and Blue123's work, but I'd like to argue that much of its effectiveness in conveying feelings comes from the music direction. For instance - and I know this technique is common in visual novels, but humour me nevertheless - not all late afternoon scenes are accompanied by the song Afternoon, but this song will only play in late afternoon scenes. This being the case, the reference for "afternoon time" becomes special in Yamaku. Everyone has to go through afternoons every day, but afternoons in Yamaku feel like something special due to the music that slowly collects your memories and throws them back at you every time it plays. That's the role of a leitmotif and there are plenty of them. The same happens to the heroines' themes - and it is very clear, due to clear presentation of each girl from the start, whose theme is each song.

A series of nods and shared themes help weaving a complex net of fond memories in the game, each scene being important at least in the atmosphere if not exactly in the narrative. Wiosna - the title theme -, Hokabi and Stride, for example, play in completely different scenes and have specific moods, but the shared theme connects them and makes Katawa Shoujo feel more focused, as if walking towards something. The absolute commitment to the color beige and a few symbols like the heart patched with bandages somewhat helps countering the full jarring effect the conflicting art styles would otherwise have, too.

So Yamaku is presented at first as the complete impossibility of dealing with our shortcomings. It's how it feels for Hisao, it's how it feels for us. Having forced to play his role, we are kept mulling over the smallest issues - would pushing ourselves a little further do us any good? How do we want to cope? You can fight against it and keep in shape or simply give up on everything that having a weak heart makes a little harder. This is our common route. It has a theme and all choices are supposed to reflect how much you want to distance yourself or dive in this new world and your newfound circumstances. And all of the heroines are better than you - they deal with their own selves much better than you do and know their way around whatever difficulty their disabilities might impose. Of course they have their troubles, but you are not there to help them out. Isn't there someone you should be taking care of before starting to think you can take care of other people? That is, of course, yourself? There is a certain virtue they show that you must learn to access their route. And there's a virtue you already have that they could use.

This creates five different Hisao guys and you slowly shape yourself to be one of these. In each case, there is a virtue you as a person (or as a player following a walkthrough) possess and something you could work on.  Take Lilly. The choices that lead to her route - and the second to the last one, especially - are all about how honest you are with others regarding your limitations and specialties. All that surrounds Lilly, thus, is a big question of "can you respect yourself enough to rely on others?". Being aware of your weak heart doesn't mean you accept it as an integral part of yourself. Lilly, however, with all flaws she may have, for she is a human being after all, is who she is not in spite of her blindness, but because of it.

This is the conclusion Hisao reaches in, if I'm not mistaken, every route: if it wasn't for the heart attack, his life wouldn't have changed. If it wasn't for the heart attack, he wouldn't have had the opportunity to like the people he comes to like across the routes and to do the things he does, with all the trouble his heart causes. If it wasn't for the heart attack, he wouldn't be able to thank the heart attack for everything it catalysed. But he reaches this conclusion through five different means and having faced five different challenges regarding how to deal with people, how to love himself and others. And it's only like this that he can finally deposit his feelings again in the endless stream of day-by-day.

The emotion carried out doesn't derive from them. It derives from you. Through the heroines, the story changes Yamaku. Through Yamaku, the story changes Hisao. Through Hisao, the story changes you. It's a spell that only works because all five routes follow the same principle and work under a single logic, which is to include the extraordinary in the ordinary and vice-versa, changing your perceptions of both of them. By blurring the line, it allows you to draw your own line again, almost from scratch, and making you feel like you've learned something.

This is why, ladies and gentlemen who raised the left hand, the game is still very much adored. It is something, a well-crafted gear with a specific intent and effect. Its production values are not high, especially not compared with Japanese commercial visual novels. However, Katawa Shoujo squeezes the assets they have until the very last drop and blend them in the most specific way in order to create a remarkable experience above all things. I hope I have clarified to you who raised your right hand, or even you who kept your hands in your pockets like I did, what remarkable experience is this. It is not on a technical level, but it's built through very much technical means. Few visual novels are so focused - but also so broad in its themes.

And like this, I would like to end this piece in a positive tone, a message that the game itself conveys. Please let these words guide your actions, if not in times of pressure, in the small troubles you come across everyday and that brought you here just as much as your merits. At the very least, it's a tip to be successful when playing Katawa Shoujo for the first time: you are not alone, and you are not strange. You are you, and everyone has damage. Be the better person.

Have a safe trip home, wherever that may be.

I know what you're thinking - 'Rooke has news? He must be taking a leave from the site.' Well... HA! Not a chance, bub. No no no no no. I must annoy Tay, and I cannot do that while off in the never never.

I merely thought I might highlight the day's news. Keeping up with the world is important if you want to remain learned and engaged. PS: Please don't hurt me :P

'Driverless cars can now ‘see’ around corners,' is the first headline I see, an enviable trait lacking in inferior, organic organisms. This new ability is truly wondrous and will be of great benefit to everybody’s safety… until the sensor breaks. Not like you’ll notice, because the light on the dashboard that glows green when there’s a problem with the sensors will also be broken. But it's not like you’ll care, because the cars ability to tell its left from its right will also have taken a vacation, causing your lucky self to be driven straight off a mountain pass to your briefly thrilling but ultimately painful doom. Nobody at the manufacturer will know what caused this weird phenomena, and your death will be written off as a ‘software glitch, ain’t that just weird ahahaha.’

    No thank you, I’ll walk.

    More technology:

‘Volvo cars get advanced kangaroo avoidance tech in Australia’ – it’s called drivers with a working set of eyes, hands, and feet.

‘Malcolm Turnbull’s (Australia’s current Prime Minister) visit to Indonesia could reset our relationship with our sometimes-beloved cousins to the North.’ What blessed voodoo is this? The ability to reset relationships at will? How can I get my roguish, rugged hands on whatever it is he's obtained?

Just last week he was busy flaunting his newfound powers when he ‘reset the Government’s relationship with science.’ It's just freakish. And convenient. And enviable. Mostly enviable. Because I’m sure most people have an ex-partner they’d wish to reset their relationship with... after they cocked up badly like so:

    Social Issues:

'An all-female, Russian astronaut crew was asked (by journalists) how they’d cope without makeup and men.' One of the astronauts (or cosmonauts) replied 'we are doing work, when you’re doing work you don’t think about men and women’. At this point every man listening scoffed and choked. Why? Well, take a look at the dude opposite you, the one enjoying a burger and some fries. Is he thinking about how delicious all that fried oil is, and how he's going to die young and full of regret? Of course not, he's thinking about sex. The guy who’s on his cell, in the cinema, arguing with the tax office while having shoes thrown at him, well he’s thinking about sex too. A man could be in the middle of the Arctic, during the worst blizzard of the century, being threatened by a man wielding a machete and with 3 Timberwolves snarling at his feet and he would still be thinking about sex. This idea of thinking about 'work' when doing 'work' is alien, and foreign, and clearly too radical to take off.

Sometimes I weep for real journalism

A recent study produced this headline: 'Why do 55% of women report a lack of interest in sex?' Because of their partner’s appearance. Too easy. Next.

    World news:

‘US releases plan for solar flares and space weather disaster’ - Aims to launch the first of many strongly worded letters into space early next year. That will show them the US is not to be trifled with.

'Fifty Shades Darker’ release date delayed?' Are you heartbroken? I know I am…

    Feel Good:

And we end on a happy note. ‘A 97 year old woman who was forced to leave high school 8 decades ago when her mother fell ill, broke down in tears this week as she was presented with an honorary diploma from her alma mater.’ A wonderful moment for someone who sacrificed selflessly for her whole life.

Now, don't we all feel so much more informed?

NOTE: This isn't what I would call a review. More like nitpicking useless stuffs hence the title. I'm hoping that you people are intelligent enough to not take my work too seriously as I proceed. Also, massive spoilers.

Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis is an anime adaptation of a mobile game with the same name. The anime was produced by studio MAPPA who are mostly known for working on titles like Zankyou no Terror and Garo: The Animation.

The anime opens with an epic battle scene happening between a dragon and some omnipotent beings just to show you exactly what to expect from it in the future. While it succeeded in capturing many with gasp and awe, it wasn’t exactly what I would call a ‘good opening scene’ per se. The scene left me mostly in confusion rather than working as an establishment of a fictional world. I couldn’t figure out or even get a general idea of who was supposed to be whom and what was going on. Only on the later episodes it was revealed that Zeus and Satan apparently worked together to seal Bahamut.

Zeus and Satan? They aren’t even of the same mythology. It would had made more sense if it was Hades instead of Satan. Well, the mixing of pantheons isn’t exactly a con in terms of storytelling so….yeah, I’m just nitpicking.

The show evokes the feels and tones of a 17th century Spain with its arts, settings and music. A fantasy swashbuckler anime that draws inspirations heavily from other fantasy swashbuckler western movies like the Pirates of the Caribbean series. The big wheel scene in episode 1, the zombies, the pirates, the entangled ships, the fight on top of the mast, sea monster and tentacle all in episode 4 are some of the homage it delivers sweetly.

The orchestrated scores are just perfect for the tone. They don’t stand out much but, as a certain someone pointed out, it’s for the best since it immerses you to the story well without fail and that’s definitely a plus for me. The OP and the ED were the ones that I completely skipped. I wouldn’t go as far as saying that they were bad or even mediocre at best. It’s just that it failed to grab my attention for the first few minutes or I simply didn’t gave it a second chance.

It felt weird to see Amira’s personality change in episode 2. In the first episode, she was shown to be less talkative and gave an aura of a stoic person plus the badassery when fighting with the summoned demon (the cinematography used in this fight scene was excellent compared to all the later unimaginative fight scenes). But in the middle of episode 2, her personality changes to a childish one. A dojikko trait.

It’s not a matter of Amira opening up to the main protagonist Favaro because she acts childish and vulnerable even in front of strangers and mere acquaintance when staying in the Anatae city. It felt like the change to her dojikko personality was just there to appeal the otaku fans. Also, what’s with her imprisonment? The angels ordered the king to keep Amira under heavy guard (can’t they just send their own infinite supply of angels to protect her?) and the King swore to guard her with his life but where are is the heavy guard? Her room is kept on watch with only two generic guards with distorted facial features. Why does she roam freely around the castle for whole three episodes without anyone even noticing or objecting?

There were some little issues with the pacing like how quickly things were resolved when in episode 5, the demon Azazel manipulated Kaisar (other protagonist) into fighting Favaro.

The Anatae arc slowed things down distracting us away from the main plot. I think it was done so that they have enough material to reach the twelve episode mark in other words, fillers. But these things not only slowed down the pace, it also added new conflicts that only complicated the overall plot unnecessarily. Like the king being poisoned by paranoia or Jeanne D'Arc (the badass) transforming into a demon.

Also, the clichéd most trusted guy is the one behind everything plot twist. Lavalley falls victim of this trope. This plot twist fails for me as it felt unnecessary and didn’t really shocked me at all and it also created unintentional plot holes which I’ll get into later.

Kaisar (other protagonist) also had some character inconsistency like how much is his vengeance important? At first, it seems like a running gag for him to chase and fight Favaro but later it is revealed that it’s much more serious than that and Kaisar (other protagonist) would never forgive him. But then again, he suddenly becomes very cooperative with Favaro for little to no reason.

When falling down, Kaisar (other protagonist) can slow down time and talk at lengths in mid-air. In the last episode he gets his hand (the one where he wears the bounty hunter bracelet) cut off by Favaro to trick Lavalley and seal him off. Couldn’t they just pretend to fight and get close to him in acceptable range and simply seal him off there? Damaging Kaisar (other protagonist) seemed like an unnecessary attempt to make him look like a badass.

Jeanne D'Arc (the badass) was just cast off as a minor side character even though she had huge potentials and was shown to be someone really important to the main plot in the early episodes.

The CGI effects were surprisingly good when I expected them to be awkward except for the green dragon. That was awful enough. And let’s not forget the great Bahamut himself (or itself). CGI Bahamut stuck out like a sore thumb too.

They could have used more tweening for smooth animation flow but it was above good nonetheless. I would have expected more from studio MAPPA since they did some fantastic animation in Zankyou no Terror but I guess they were running out of money and manpower in addition to the dead line.

    Plot holes left unanswered:

If Lavalley was the one behind everything, then why did he left the childish Amira all by herself to find Helheim? How in the world could he predict that some random afro would help Amira to get to Helheim at all cost? Couldn’t he just kidnap Amira by his own when she was roaming freely around the castle for whole 3 episodes? It seems like a much more logical and easy solution than trying to trick her with all the pendent stuff.

It was revealed that Amira’s memories were fabricated by Beelzebub and he recreated Amira from Nicole (Amira’s supposedly mother) as an imitation vessel to release Bahamut. It was showed clearly that Amira was a full grown adult when she was being separated from Nicole. Now the cocoon excuse falls flat. If she was an adult from the beginning then how come her personality be childish? She wasn’t grown inside a cocoon from childhood to adulthood so where did this clumsy personality come from? And keeping her inside the cocoon even when she was an adult (also making her a child when she was already an adult) would just seem like a waste of time and not logical. Her acting childish throughout the show felt like they underutilized her potential as a character just like they did with Jeanne D'Arc (the badass).

When Amira hugs Nicole, she calls out Amira’s name and dies in peace. How did Nicole know that her supposedly daughter’s (more accurately, her clone’s) name was Amira? And why did she lovingly call out her name if she knew that Beelzebub created the clone by force? Wouldn’t Nicole just hate Amira more for that?

Beelzebub and Lavalley released Bahamut by using Amira as the key. Then the Bahamut fatally wounds Beelzebub. Why was Beelzebub so sure that he could control Bahamut if he releases the dragon? Even if Lavalley lied to him that he could control Bahamut, wouldn’t he at least be suspicious because Bahamut was so powerful that even Zeus and Satan could barely seal him off let alone control him? Looks like Beelzebub trusts and gets tricked by people easily despite him being the devil.

I think the show would have turned out great if the plot twist never happened. If Lavalley really was the virtuous human who protected Nicole and Amira from the demons, if Martinet (Lavalley’s disguise or his other personality?) never even existed, if Nicole really did gave birth to Amira instead of cloning, all of the above plot holes could’ve been avoided and made this journey more emotional and satisfying than it currently is.

Despite me cherry picking all that stuff, I still enjoyed the show. It undoubtedly is in the leagues of one of the best animes of 2014 if not ‘the best’. Quality animation, great slapstick comedy that doesn’t gets old, an emotionally invested epic journey, almost no pacing issues, fillers (subplots) that tied to the overarching plot, good action scenes, Favaro, and the Dragon are just some of the many things that this anime has to offer.

I’m definitely hyped for when the next season comes out. And by that time, I hope that they had learned from their mistakes.

Q: Where are the review scores?

A: It's against my policy to give generalized metric values to a piece of art or literature or any kind of entertainment medium....actually, I just suck at math...I'll start rating things with numbers when I get a PhD in Mathematics or something.

Look Tay, I know you want to get the word out about your blog but this is a bit much...

I'll start the guide with a short introduction of Wine

Windows and Mac have been rival for quite some time. Until now, people are still arguing which one is better, simpler, faster, and other things. Seeing how different the architecture of the two, many folks have tried to make files and/or programs unique to one OS to be able to use on the other. One of the most commonly used method to do this is by emulating one OS on another. Programs like Virtual Box and VMware serves this purpose nicely. Unfortunately, emulating an OS requires a quite great number of RAM and the execution process is still slower than execution of the same code by the processor for which the code was compiled.

Then some people create a free and open source compatibility layer software that aims to allow applications designed for Microsoft Windows to run on Unix-like operating systems, namely Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator). The phrase "wine is not an emulator" is a reference to the fact that no processor code execution emulation occurs when running a Windows application under Wine. In Wine, the Windows application's compiled x86 code runs at full native speed on the computer's x86 processor, just as it does when running under Windows. Windows system services are also supplied by Wine, in the form of wineserver. WIne works by duplicating functions of Windows by providing alternative implementations of the DLLs that Windows programs call, and a process to substitute for the Windows NT kernel.

The Wine project originally released Wine under the same MIT license as the X Window System, but owing to concern about proprietary versions of Wine not contributing their changes back to the core project, work as of March 2002 has used the LGPL for its licensing. The project has proven time-consuming and difficult for the developers, mostly because of incomplete and incorrect documentations of the Windows API. While Microsoft extensively documents most Win32 functions, some areas such as file formats and protocols have no publicly available specification from Microsoft. Microsoft Windows also includes undocumented low-level functions, undocumented behavior and obscure bugs that Wine must duplicate precisely in order to allow some applications to work properly. Consequently, the Wine team has reverse-engineered many function calls and file formats in such areas as thunking.

Wine has been regularly updated until now. The latest version is Wine 1.7.51, the latest stable version is Wine 1.6.2. You can download the source from winehq.org and build make yourself or you can use a pre-configured Wine inside a Winebottler software package. You can download Winebottler here: http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/downloads
For this guide, I'll use the pre-configured Wine 1.7.37 inside the Winebottler package, you can configure or change some things yourself later.

*Note: Wine uses the fonts available in your libraries, so install any fonts your game may require before opening Wine. Another thing to note is that Wine use the same locale as your Mac. To change your Mac locale, open System Preferences. Choose Language & Text. In the Language tab, drag your preferred language to the top. Then in the Formats tab, choose your preferred formats. Make sure that your formats use the correct one according to your language.

After downloading and mounting the DMG, you can open Wine inside the package directly or drag it to the application folder first. Three dialogue boxes would appear. The first is General Preferences, the second is Change Prefix, and the third is Winetricks.
Choose the options on the general preferences dialogue box as you like. In the Change Prefix dialogue box, you can add, change or remove prefixes. You can try it yourself later. An the the Winetricks dialogue box will give so many options to choose, some of these may require an active internet connection to activate. For this guide, I'll skip this step and just close the Winetricks dialogue box.

Notice that there is a wine glass icon on your task bar now. Upon clicking this icon, you'll be given several options.

As you see on the picture above, Wine also comes along with a File Manager, Registry Editor, Control Panel, and DOS Prompt. These utilities will help you in setting up your Windows software.
For now, choose Configuration. Soon after, an install dialogue box will appear. It will first create a customprefix.sh (the pre-configured prefix), then gather debug info, then enable coreaudio, colors, antialiasing and flat menus. After registering the truetype fonts, it will show a "prefix created successfully" message. Click OK.

Then you'll get a dialogue box like in the picture below:

In the applications tab, you can modify the settings of each single applications you want. You can also change what Windows version will Wine mimic. In the graphics tab, there are several options you can choose. In the desktop integration change, you can change the theme more or less like when you do it on Windows. In the Drives tab, you can add or remove some drives as you want. In the Audio tab, you can change the input and output devices and speakers. In the libraries tab, you can edit the libraries Wine uses, don't change this if you don't know what you're doing. After you've done configuring, click OK.

Now you're good to go to run a windows application. Run a windows aplication with wine. You'll get this dialogue box.

Choose either option you want. As for me, I prefer the top option. Check "Don't show this dialog again" if you want to apply this to all windows application you'll open from now. Then click Go. Then if your game/application is supported by Wine, it will run just fine like on Windows. If not, you'll get an error message of some kind. You can see the list/database of supported applications on WineHQ.org website. For any applications not on the list, try your luck!

To change your default font, open Registry Editor. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then Software, then Microsoft, then Windows NT, then Current Version, and lastly, FontSubstitutes. Right click MS Shell Dlg, choose Modify. Type your preferred font.

In case you're wondering where drive C is, it's in [userAccount]\Wine Files [or whatever your prefix name is]\drive_c.

*Note: Some games' display may not properly shown by Wine 1.5 and above. The examples are Fate/Stay Night and Sharin no Kuni - Himawari no Shoujo. For those games, you may need to use Wine version 1.4 or below. You can download the older versions of Wine here: http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/downloads. Note that Wine 1.4 package from this site has the sound disabled, so your safest bet is to download Wine 1.2.5. Also note that X11 is no longer needed in Wine 1.6 and above, but the X11 driver is still supported, e.g. when running remotely. But the Mac driver requires Mac OS X 10.6 or later, it cannot be built or used on 10.5.

    Welcome guys

This is a casual review of Air - standard edition, having played all 3 heroine routes plus "Summer", and "Air".

The translation I used is by Sheeta, and not Gao-gao translations (sorry).

I have seen the anime version a long time ago and I barely remember any details from it. I heard that the VN is better and so I tried it. After finishing the VN, I double down on that statement.

I want this summer to be the best I've ever had. Because this is the summer I met you. - Kamio Mizusu

Some background: Air is released by KEY after Kanon, and before Clannad. I'd classify the game a Nakige, much like Clannad After Story.

The game has the theme of Summer, compared to Kanon's winter. I'm not sure if Clannad had a season theme.

Art: Key style. I personally like KEY style. I cannot really comment on the intricacies of the art and the CGs. I do think the number of CGs are quite few but I'm just spoiled.

Music/Sound: It's ok. There are a couple of memorable and catchy tunes (Minagi's theme) but nothing too bad, nothing too fantastic.

Story: I don't like the fact that I'm forced to play the other two heroines to unlock Summer+Air. Kano's route felt like a massive filler. Minagi's route is decent, while Mizusu's route felt just like Little Buster's Rin route is when playing it for the first time --- stopped short of the climax. Overall the heroine routes suffer from an unbearably SLOW development. I drowned on slice-of-life with what seems like 80% of the game. Literally felt like only 3 sentences out of a day in Air contributes to the advancement of the plot. It's quite anachronistic to make this comparison but, Air feels like an unrefined Clannad. If you are a KEY fan, you will see elements of KEY style in Air. The humor is hit-or-miss, not as good as Clannad or LB. Tension build-up was way too slow in Air, which is something they vastly improved in Clannad in my opinion.

    Stegosaurus. Gao. Gao - Yukito

The highlight of the whole game for me was Summer route. It contained tension from very early in the route and kept me hooked from start to finish. I'm not sure if going through two unrelated filler arcs was worth getting to Summer. But I would say this route even trumped the final route "Air", and is the main bone of the game. Summer is very impactful. Most of the final route "Air" was mostly a repeat of Misuzu's route and it's quite unpleasant to go through the slice-of-life elements again with barely any change on the narration... The story line outside of "Summer" arc only spikes in drama at the end. Tension in the mid-route is almost non-existent. The mysteries are so-so.

Beginnings always need a tiny bit of courage. Happiness can bloom from just a few words. -Yukito Narration (?)

As for themes, I'm not really good at analyzing but I will try. The setting takes place on a rural town, and as such cell-phones and modern technology doesn't exist as much. By playing Air, you get a sense of the laidback countryside, with its elderly. The setting is so simple there's nothing eyecatching or interesting. But simplicity in itself seems to be what the setting conveys. Sky and flying are the main aspects of the story and there are countless references to it in-game. There are some great quotes all throughout the game, but I wasn't engaged too much with any kind of philosophical stimulation. I'm sure there are countless other themes that the game conveyed but I won't bother brainstorming at this point.

Just another summer day. A mundane, typical day. Maybe that's all I wanted. -Yukito (Narration)

I'm used to spend everyday traveling. So now, living a life in one place is the start of a new adventure. -Yukito

Scores: I'm not going to try to come up with arbitrary number for every category but I will give this VN an overall score of 6-7; meaning I will put it in the AVERAGE category. I have played or watched so much slice-of-life stories that I'm just numbed to the majority of the scenes here. Usually at that point, if there are no main plot developments happening, then humor is the only one that keeps me going. Air's humor is spotty as I mentioned before.

    Will I recommend this?

If you like other KEY titles and its narratives, and are a fan of drama --- then yes. If you are a beginner or new to the Visual Novel scene, play this one later. There are countless numerous other better VNs than Air. Part of the reason I have survived through this game was because I was already a huge fan of KEY (having replayed Clannad like 4 times). As a standalone game it's so-so, not a bad VN, but not superb.

And so I leave you with a few more quotes.

Is there any meaning in wings that can't fly? -Minagi Tohno

They're precious memories of when you used to fly through the sky. (???)

Writers Note: What you are about to read is merely a chronological compilation of ordered thoughts on the conclusion I've come to draw regarding the Universe of the Little Busters!. You may find that it will be mixed with events that happened only in the anime. That is because not every piece of work is done right to perfection, and sometimes, even if it is once in a blue moon, an adaptation does produce something better than the original.

Let's dive into something that's very dear to my heart. If someone were to ask me what my favorite anime would be, the first image to jump to mind would be Little Busters!. But then I would hold my tongue and take a moment to rethink. It is actually the visual novel that I am in love with, but I have found this story so endearing that I can't help but wish they would rephrase their question. It must have been three years since I've read this story, and it still resonates with me today.

    I have written a chronological-half-analysis-not-a-review essay of a sort.

    Little Busters! Origins

The origins of Little Busters began when Natsume Kyousuke wanted to help his younger sister, Natsume Rin, make friends. The first member to join was Inohara Masato.

In his youth, Masato felt belittled and isolated by his classmates and eventually started picking fights to stop the snickering behind his back. It worked for a time. No one laughed at him anymore, but everyone stayed away from him. His community dubbed him a monster and he felt more alone than ever.
Kyousuke learned of the boy and together with Rin had set out to defeat him. The tough fight was won by the Natsume siblings and ended with Kyousuke extending Masato a hand of friendship.

The next to join was Miyazawa Kengo, a young kendo prodigy. It was never explained why Kyousuke wanted to defeat him. I speculate that he thought Kengo was spending his entire childhood practicing at his father’s behest and wanted to free him.

Kyousuke challenged the elder Miyazawa, defeated him, and secured Kengo's freedom.

The four members eventually discovered Naoe Riki, a boy who was hospitalized after a car accident took the lives of his parents and left him with narcolepsy.

Around this pre-adolescent age the heroines we know and love also go through some things of their own that develops into regrets. Kamikita Komari loses her older brother which causes her to develop regressive tendencies and psychogenic amnesia. Kurugaya Yuiko grows to become a prodigal student and shuts herself from the rest of the world. Saegusa Haruka and Futaki Kanata are pitted against each other to determine who the criminal child of Saegusa Shou was. Noumi Kudryavka was in Tebua struggling in her studies to become like her mother. Nishizono Mio develops the imaginary friend and persona of Midori.

The history between here and the beginning of the Little Buster's visual novel is left to the imagination. Each heroine's route gives a rather sufficient glimpse into their past such that most of their history can be inferred. In the opening of the anime adaptation of Little Busters: Refrain each member of the main gang can be seen tending to Riki, who had succumbed to narcolepsy.

    High school & Adolescence

Let's start where they are in high school in the real world.

I postulate that the gang did not form a baseball team in the real world, and instead went about their typical antics much like they did in the VN's common route during the slice of life portions of their days.

It is also likely, and supported by individual characters' accounts that the main Little Busters members and the girls that would later form the other half knew little of each other. This is backed up by Kyousuke's account during his route in Refrain where he states that he looked for others who held some sort of regret in their lives. In other words, it could have been anyone! However, our Key girls likely held regrets that resonated with Kyousuke, such that he found them useful for strengthening Rin and Riki. That would imply everyone became friends over the course of the events in the artificial world(s).

There are several moments of significance worth noting before the trip happens. Haruka and Riki's first meeting at her beloved bench. She laters alludes in her route that this chance meeting made the bench that much more important to her. Kud loses her mother to the chaos happening back in Tebua after the failed launch, and declined to travel to her home country to find her. Koshiki Miyuki is forced to quit archery after losing sight in one eye and commits suicide.

Time goes on and the class trip arrives. Kyousuke sneaks into the bus so that he could be with the rest of his friends on his last year.

Now to the juice of it. Their happy little days would come to an abrupt stop, and a new beginning would come forth. On their way, the bus suffers an accident and goes crashing down the side of a mountain. Thus begins the Little Busters story as we know from the visual novel.

Kyousuke's plan has been ruined. He had created such a great place for the shy Rin and his friends. All gone because of an unforeseeable, freak accident.

So he wouldn't have it. It would not be the end of it. At best he wanted to save the lives of his precious sister and dear friend Riki who had known nothing but misery for a good part of his life. It was going to be tough, because the very two he wishes to save possess the weakest hearts. They would lose their will as soon as they learn of the tragedy, but even so, Kyousuke wants them to go on. So he devises a plan to make them stronger.

How? By creating an artificial world wherein they can replay the last month leading up to their accident. He would usher Riki and Rin into a series of trials to resolve each of the heroines' and Keybros' woes. Doing so, the two would undergo a forced maturation and mentally strengthen themselves in preparation for the tragedy that will ensue. The perk of this world? They can reset it almost as many times as they needed (To an extent).

    BUT HOW???!!!

    Key magic, of course.

The Clock has Stopped, The Artificial World

Kyousuke selected the heroines and through their cooperation, with a little help from Key magic, created an artificial world with their collective consciousness.

From here until Refrain is the bulk of the Little Busters visual novel. It isn't necessary for me to talk about every heroine's route as you are likely familiar with them already. Just keep in mind that RIki will go on to fail many times before he successfully resolves each of the girls' regrets.

An interesting note that there is about a month or so between Riki's awakening into the common route/artificial world and the day after the baseball game where the date cuts off. That is not counting the time between the baseball match to the class trip, and the time Riki spends with the each heroine, including the number of times he's failed. Which means that they had likely spent years within the artificial world. I wouldn't be surprised if Little Busters is Christopher Nolan's inspiration for Inception.

We will never know which heroine Riki was thrown into first or whose regret he solved first. However, it is my belief that it went a little like: Heroines+Rin1>Kurugaya>Rin2>Refrain. I don't think I need to order the "Heroines" route as doing so will only be redundant. I will explain why I believe Kurugaya likely occurred right before Rin2.

Let's not discuss the semantics good and bad regarding the Little Busters: Refrain adaptation. That being said, I did like some of what they did with the anime. Specifically with Kurugaya because things make sense to the story.

    Kurugaya Yuiko

First, we can infer from her actions and manner of speaking to indicate that she is aware of the artificial world more so than the other heroines. Whether Kyousuke allows her to retain her memories or she can exert her own control like him is unclear. Though the latter makes more sense.

So, why do I believe Kurugaya's route occurs right before Rin2? Most people and walkthroughs will tell you to play her route last for the reason that it spoils the artificial world. But that's just a technical detail to suggest a pseudo-forced playing order.

In regards to character-motivation and chronology of the world, this is what I believe: The order in which Riki resolves each girl's regret, Kurugaya Yuiko's route directly precedes the Heroines'+Rin1 routes because she could not have developed an interest in love as she did in her route without seeing the profound effects it had on the other heroines in their respective routes.

    She discovered love.

What does this feeling compel her to do? She creates her own world to explore this foreign emotion as many times as she wants, for as long as she wants so long as her world holds. A world that Riki will experience many times over.

A theory that I developed is that each person has a certain amount of energy in which they can shape their own world. This energy is expendable, and expends at a rate proportional to how much detail goes into their respective world. All of the Little Busters had been pooling in their energy to sustain many worlds/routes. Komari, Haruka, Kud, and Mio in particular expanded their world beyond the school and by the time Riki helped each them their energy had nearly depleted.

What I believe happened was that when Kurugaya finally wanted to explore the feeling of "love" none of the heroines had enough energy to support her world but herself. She didn't want to go to the Keybros for help because her wish deviates from Kyousuke's plan. So she created her world It is why she calls it, "selfish," because:

    • On a thematic note she would keep Riki from maturing.
    • She was sustaining her own world for her own sake.

The theory supports this because the extent of Kurugaya's world was within the school to mitigate energy loss, and most of it was spent in the broadcasting room. She then spent what energy she had left to repeatedly recreate the world, and to expend as little as possible rendered it less and less distinguishable from the previous until it became an exact repeat. It makes sense why, in the anime, right after her arc ends she is not seen disappearing with the other girls (Another thing the anime did well to portray).

In Rin2, we have the final mission. The secret of the world. Rin must survive on her own at their sister school, but all that becomes too much for her to bear. After everything that she had gone through the final task was insurmountable to her.

Riki confronts Kyousuke at the dead of night who affirms that he was the mastermind behind the "Secret of the World" missions. However, he after their conversation was interrupted, he was only left with more questions. Eventually he convinced Kyousuke to allow Rin to visit. Riki, having seen the strain this mission has been on her, brought Kengo to his side and challenged Kyousuke to a game of baseball with the hopes of bringing her back permanently. Riki and Kengo lost due to CHEAP TRICKS. Riki ran away with Rin but is later caught and taken back to school.

    Little Busters!: Refrain

Kyousuke will ask Masato and Kengo to help him create the artificial world again. Despite the foul play Kyousuke pulled on Kengo the latter agrees to help one last time, but with his own condition: should Riki fail this time, he will no longer give his assistance and instead spend what remains of their time in the world playing.

The world resets once again and Riki enters Refrain. Everyone who has read or seen Refrain knows what happens here, and there should be no confusion as to the chronological order of the route. Riki goes on to recruiting Masato and then Kengo in a similar fashion to how Kyousuke did when they were younger. Together, the four will pull Kyousuke from despair just as he had done for Riki in the past. The original team plays baseball one last time, say their goodbyes, and the artificial ceases to exist.

    The Clock Ticks Again

    Or so they thought.

What happens next has been a matter of debate for some time now.

    I have identified three possibilities.

Key Magic. This possibility is the least satisfactory because it is synonymous to an ass-pull. It is a trademark that Key likes to use in many of their works. Most recognizable is

Clannad where Key Magic takes the form of orbs of light. I'll use the anime for the example. The protagonist Okazaki Tomoya accrues orbs of light for the good deeds he commits, which gives him a world where Nagisa and Ushio survives and are free of their fatal illness.

In a similar, but unseen fashion, Riki and Rin acquires their world's form Key Magic from solving everyone's regret. Thus curing Riki from his narcolepsy and giving them a second chance at saving their friends and classmates.

Limbo/ TV Lost-factor/ Escapism. This is one of the two most probable outcomes that I have long debated since finishing the visual novel. It also makes sense in a real world point of view. Unfortunately, this outcome would condemn Little Busters as one of the most tragic and heartbreaking stories humanity has ever told.

In this possibility, the Little Busters and classmates are not saved. Riki and Rin's story ends when they escape and the former succumbs to narcolepsy. He wakes up in a hospital and finds Rin huddled up in the corner of the room. Unwilling to accept their condition, the two create a fantasy world within their consciousness to escape the horrible tragedy. An imaginary world where the Little Busters are alive and well, and they are still going about their youth.

The heroine's routes can be seen as Riki going through the Kübler-Ross model, commonly known as the Five Stages of Grief, for Riki. The order goes as follows:
    • Komari represents denial. Seeing the dead cat evoked the repressed memories of her brother having died. She refused to accept this truth and in order to cope, while under the temporary influence of a regressed state, started believing Riki to be her brother.
    • Haruka represents anger. Recall that a good portion of her route involved trying to find the right person to direct her rage towards. At first it was Kanata, then Saegusa Shou, then her "parents," and at some point, herself.

    • Mio represents bargaining. Her route revolved around exchanging her life for Midori's. She truly believed that letting Midori take her place would grant her redemption for having forsaken her.
    • Kud represents depression. Bear with me. This one took some research.
      • Aaron Beck developed what is known in the field of psychology as the "Beck Depression Inventory." It is a test to measure an individual's level of depression. There are three negative cognitions that he developed from another theory. It is as follows.
        • The student has negative thoughts about the world
        • The student has negative thoughts about his future
        • The student has negative thoughts about his self

[*]What does this have to do with Kud? Well, throughout the anime and visual novel she makes repeated remarks to demean herself. She is probably making fun of herself more than any bully ever did: she lacks confidence about her own image, concluded that she would fail the exam before it even began, and expected no one would ever want to be her roommate. There is more to list but the most damning is that she originally went back to Tebua to die. "Ни пу́ха, ни пера" "Ni puha, ni pera," "Neither fur, nor feather."

[*]Kurugaya represents acceptance. This is a bit of a stretch, yeah? Her route makes her seem more like she was in denial. A different approach to seeing how her route went down is that she knew and accepted death, but before she dies she would use her remaining time to experience love. She lets go of her "selfish" wish in the end because she understood the inevitability of her situation, and her letting Riki go was the ultimate symbolism of accepting mortality.

Natsume Kyousuke. The second of the two most probable outcomes and the outcome I have come to accept. This possibility banks on the very man who was the origins of the Little Busters, and the one who orchestrated plan to save Riki and Rin. The man with the plan, the master schemer, the Darkness Executives, Mask the Saitou, CHEAP TRICKS. It is not so outrageous to believe Kyousuke had a backup plan.

In this outcome, Kyousuke creates one final world to test Riki and Rin's resolve to save everyone. Beginning when the duo supposedly first exits the artificial and ending where Riki and Rin wakes up in front of the bus crash for the second time.

Wait a minute. Doesn't Rin and Komari meet one final time in the artificial world? Precisely. Which is why Kyousuke's backup world theory makes sense, and why the anime did a very good job in writing a scene that does not exist visual novel. The scene being where the girls except Komari disappears. Even after the boys disappear and the world collapses, Komari should still be there somewhere, right? That's because Komari did not leave yet, and she didn't leave because she found her way into the last world Kyousuke had created for Riki and Rin.

There, Komari was able to meet Rin one last time to give her the courage she needed. Riki (though still an inexplicable miracle) overcame his narcolepsy, and together with Rin were successful in saving everyone who was on the bus, including the Little Busters.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I am sure there are countless other conclusions people have reached on their own, and this is just one of them. At first I only wanted to compile my thoughts and give it a rest. Then I ended up typing a small essay and thought sharing it would be nice, too.

It is always important to keep an open mind, but never let someone give you all the answers without first taking the time to sort out your own.

I hope my version of the Little Busters! conclusion gave you just an inkling of clarity to their story. I enjoyed writing this and I hope you did, too!

I am always open to discussing stories so feel free to drop a message or comment!

[[WARNING: Spoilers for When Marnie Was There and Porco Rosso]]

Ever since I watched When Marnie Was There (Omoide no Marnie) in theaters a month or so ago I've engaged in a struggle to understand the reality that is put forth by movies with singular fantastic components. Rewatching Porco Rosso (Kurenai no Buta), one of my favorite Ghibli movies, a few weeks later really developed this desire to understand what exactly was going on in these movies. I've thought of these movies as incredible works before truly attempting to understand them, but that doesn't stop me from wondering why Ghibli often makes movies that so boldly defy a strict ruleset for reality. Why is Porco a pig in a world that otherwise matches out own? What is with the link between Marnie and Anna? Is she hallucinating or is it something more? These are questions that seemed deeply important to the movies. It's clear that these fantastic elements are at the heart of these movies, but they are so sharply designated in a world that otherwise perfectly matches our own.

So a couple of days ago I was talking to a friend about all of the things I have to see (I'm definitely going to go ham on Yamato 2199 after writing this!) and I mentioned that I needed to see a few Ghibli movies. The conversation went on and I suggested that he might like When Marnie Was There. He responded by saying that he wanted to, but didn't like movies that "half-ass" their settings like Porco Rosso. It's an interesting comment and one that's been floating behind my ears for a while... Are these Ghibli Movies (and other stories as well, though Ghibli in particular does this often I believe) conceding the sanctity of their setting for a more interesting story? I mean, I guess it's okay, but that's not something I like to believe about some of my favorite movies. I know it was a lot more backstory than you guys may have needed (or wanted ;^^) but It's something interesting, at least to me. Is it just a hole so obvious that people look past it and appreciate the real meat of the films? I dont think so.

I don't believe it was a concession from the authors in order to make a more enjoyable story, but rather a more direct method of expressing reality. When I was thinking about stories that would sacrifice truth for impact, I remembered a book I read in high school named The Things They Carried. The idea that is central to the fantastic elements of these Ghibli movies is the same that Tim O'Brien makes about the horrors of war: Sometimes the best way to express the truth to an outsider is through fiction. Sometimes we need something a little more than the strict facts to truly feel and understand what is happening. That's what is happening in these movies.

The things we take away from these movies--the things really at the heart of their meaning--are related to the way people see and understand the world. Porco sees himself as a pig, dirty and below the rest of humanity because of his experiences in war. He deeply feels something about himself that we can't as clearly understand without the image of the pig. But Porco is great. I like Porco and I think he's a hero of sorts, but without the image of the pig I'm not sure it would be clear to me--especially as a child--that Porco sees himself in a completely different way. Likewise with Anna and Marnie. While a extreme realist may claim that Anna is having some seriously concerning hallucinations, I'm confident the reality behind the inexplicable relationship between herself, Marnie, and the physical world they live in is a similar statement by the author. it's a concession from the setting not for the story, but for the impact and experience felt by the reader. Anna's experiences with Marnie may well be analogous to the experiences of a very real young girl or boy undergoing some emotional and contextual reevaluation. It helps the viewer to clearly see the world through the eyes of the characters rather than through the viewer's own eyes. Your eyes may vary with the seasons. But remember: these stories do not. Because of these singular fantastic elements, their meaning stands strong and compels you to actually understand what the characters are going through.

On another note, I want to say that I know that the way I wrote this was a little weird and unnecessary but I just couldn't really find it in me to change it. I don't really know why. I guess it comes down to the fact that I don't really like optimization. There's something artistic in letting things take their own way, I think. Though it's easy enough for me of all people to say that ^^;. I just want to get my thoughts down for people to read sometimes and screw the rest. Kind of. I have to like it, right? Then it's good to go. After that I just hope you guys do.

On my list of things to talk about is passion and especially sharing passion. I don't know when I'll write about it, but hopefully I find it in me to do it tomorrow. So often i find myself thinking of things to write about while I'm in bed or on a walk or in the shower, but rarely can I put myself in front of the computer and step away from all the people I try to talk to online and all of the videos and such that steal my interest from writing. So who knows, maybe I'll end up talking about why I love Inuyasha so much or something weird xD

  20. Yo, I'm back from the dead! (though I can't guarantee that I won't die again) And what was the miraculous thing that had the ability to revive me? Of course, it was the latest title from the legendary eroge maker Winged Cloud, Sakura Beach, which was just released on August 14th! I mean, if their previous titles from the Sakura trilogy were all so successful like that, there is no reason for them to not make another one, right??

Okay, joke aside, let the summer trip to Hell begin.

Seiji is a daydreamer who spends too much time thinking about space. When he was given a chance to visit the beach with his two childhood friends, all he can think about is his chance to take out his telescope and look at the stars. But gradually, he begins to realise that his childhood friends want him to pay attention to them instead of the constellations...

    1. Seiji

Our MALE protagonist (wait, isn't this a yurige?!). A dense guy that loves the space more than girls.

    2. Ayumi

Osananajimi No.1. A classic over-the-roof tsundere girl that always try to act mature. A good cook, and one of the smartest student at school, but has no swimming ability.

    3. Momoka

Osananajimi No.2. A cheerful and immature girl that loves to tease the MC and make lewd jokes. A complete opposite with Ayumi (terrible cook, bad in study, but extremely good at sports, especially swimming).

The story progression can be summarized like this: Seiji, Ayumi and Momoka came to this particular beach-side hotel on their summer holiday. As they were having fun day to day on the beach, the girls tried hard to make Seiji notice their feeling, and also tried to make him confessing the truth behind his obsessed with studying, which they found really unusual. Gradually, Seiji opened up more to them, told them about the thing that he was trying to cover up, his fear, and his true feeling toward his two friends.

One thing I have to say, is that their plot this time is actually pretty decent for a OEL moege. At least better than their previous titles that I played. However, their plot development is still all over the place, with a ton of random events that just happen out of nowhere without any explanation (I will run through this later in the nitpicking section below). Moreover, some important-looking events even contributed absolutely nothing to the plot, almost were just there to satisfy the fetish of a certain group of players. Yes, I'm talking about the yuri scene, which made me thought that this was a yurige. Just suddenly come then go, no freaking explanation whatsoever.

They also brought back a bunch of fan-service scenes that were literally just a copy-paste from Sakura Fantasy (and maybe the whole damn series), and even those scenes were so forced that made me just go "wtf?".

Typos are still lying here and there (and sometimes, it's not even typo, it's just a dumb and funny mistake), seem like their QC need some more practice.

I have a little complaint about the fact that every single day in their vacation happened in a exact same pattern: Wake up -> Go swimming at the beach -> Random talk -> Go home -> New day, wake up -> ...., though, being a guy that almost never go to the beach, guess I'm in no position to judge people. That said, the only once time I went for holiday in a seaside city for a week, I only spent 2 days for swimming, and the other 5 for going around, visiting this and that place.

This is my personal taste, but imo, Winged Cloud totally trashed their strongest point, which is the art, this time. The new art is just so much worse, although it's still "acceptable". The BGs are decent-looking though.

Btw, what happened to their old artist? Rage quit? :makina:

After 5 minutes of playing, I decided to turn off the music and turn my fripSide playlist on. <_<

Do something about your boring music please, Winged Cloud.

Though I did say that the plot was decent, $10 for this game is still a big no. Both the plot and the fan-service quality did not go anywhere near that price. So, if you want to pir---I mean borrow it from someone out of curiosity, then go ahead. BUT DON'T GIVE WINGED CLOUD ANY MORE MONEY PLEASE!

    - Decent plot (wait, is this even a pro?)

    - All-over-the-place plot development.

    - Cliche fan-service scenes.

    - Unexplained details.

    - Boring-to-death music.

    Story: 5/10.

    Character: 4/10.

    Graphic: 6/10.

    Music: 2/10.

    Overall: 4/10.

I mean, why not? With a game full of problem like this, nitpicking can give us much more fun than even the game itself!

    I recommend Mega or Mediafire.

Fake stuff everywhere. Seem like this hotel couldn't afford to stuff their pillows with cotton, so they had to use rocks instead.

Btw, it seems that in the world of Winged Cloud, girls are temporarily deaf when they are changing clothes.

No no man, it's the censorship light doing its work!

Girls these days. They love to swim with their full clothes on, then later change to their swimsuit to go to the cafe.

Is that a new fashion trend? Am I really this behind?

Meanwhile, Momoka was out there, having fun by herself, while these two flirting around. Poor girl.

Gold > Diamond confirmed. I blame Riot.

Right after decided to build a sand castle, the girls headed straight to the ocean and the MC went to sleep.

    The castle? Screw it~

Yo Ayumi so tsun when the writer tried to write her name, he accidentally wrote "tsun" instead.

I can feel the cold just by looking at you two.

Along with a quite amount of cinnamon, fish sauce, mango sauce, chocolate sauce...

    RIP Ocean a.k.a Umi-chan (?-2015)

I thought he wanted to say "it might be me". Turned out he was just another dense MC.

You said you did not look you liar! How come you could describe perfectly what happened like that?!

Look at the neatly arranged pantsu collection on the bed. Fabulous.

    1. By the scene from the window, this is no where near the 20th floor.

    2. These kids don't look like they can afford to live in a 20+ floors hotel.

    3. No one is dumb enough to walk from the 20th floor down to the ground by stair, except in emergency situations.

    4. MC got dragged head-on-the-floor down 20 floors by stairs. He should be brain-dead by now.

I call BS on any 20+ floors hotel that has no elevator. Or hide them in a place that no one can see.

Btw, you people had been here for days, and hadn't used the elevator once?!

Joke on you, that's how I always cook my dinner. And they are all great!

The next day, Momoka lay flat on the bed, coughing like SARS.

BS, last time you clearly said that you were fine with harem too!
